Gromov asked whether every one-ended word-hyperbolic group contains a hyperbolic surface group. We prove that every one-ended double of a free group has a hyperbolic surface subgroup if (1) the free group has rank two, or (2) every generator is used the same number of times in the amalgamating words. To prove this, we formulate a stronger statement on Whitehead graphs and prove its specialization by combinatorial induction for (1) and the characterization of perfect matching polytopes by Edmonds for (2).

We show that every cubic bridgeless graph with n vertices has at least 3n/4-10 perfect matchings. This is the first bound that differs by more than a constant from the maximal dimension of the perfect matching polytope.

Beck et. al. characterized the grid graphs whose perfect matching polytopes are Gorenstein and they also showed that for some parameters, perfect matching polytopes of torus graphs are Gorenstein. In this paper, we complement their result, that is, we characterize the torus graphs whose perfect matching polytopes are Gorenstein. Beck et. al. also gave a method to construct an infinite family of Gorenstein polytopes. In this paper, we introduce a new class of polytopes obtained from graphs and we extend their method to construct many more Gorenstein polytopes.

We examine domino tilings of rectangular boards, which are in natural bijection with perfect matchings of grid graphs. This leads to the study of their associated perfect matching polytopes, and we present some of their properties, in particular, when these polytopes are Gorenstein. We also introduce the notion of domino stackings and present some results and several open questions. Our techniques use results from graph theory, polyhedral geometry, and enumerative combinatorics.

The edge expansion of a graph is the minimum quotient of the number of edges in a cut and the size of the smaller one among the two node sets separated by the cut. Bounding the edge expansion from below is important for bounding the ``mixing time'' of a random walk on the graph from above. It has been conjectured by Mihail and Vazirani that the graph of every 0/1-polytope has edge expansion at least one. A proof of this (or even a weaker) conjecture would imply solutions of several long-standing open problems in the theory of randomized approximate counting. We present different techniques for bounding the edge expansion of a 0/1-polytope from below. By means of these tools we show that several classes of 0/1-polytopes indeed have graphs with edge expansion at least one. These classes include all 0/1-polytopes of dimension at most five, all simple 0/1-polytopes, all hypersimplices, all stable set polytopes, and all (perfect) matching polytopes.
