Ramsey degrees: big v. small
In this paper we investigate algebraic properties of big Ramsey degrees in categories satisfying some mild conditions. As the first nontrivial consequence of the generalization we advocate in this paper we prove that small Ramsey degrees are the minima of the corresponding big ones. We also prove that big Ramsey degrees are subadditive and show that equality is enforced by an abstract property of objects we refer to as self-similarity. Finally, we apply the abstract machinery developed in the paper to show that if a countable relational structure has finite big Ramsey degrees, then so do its quantifier-free reducts. In particular, it follows that the reducts of (Q, <), the random graph, the random tournament and (Q, <, 0) all have finite big Ramsey degrees.
A Categorical Notion of Precompact Expansion
We generalize the notion of relational precompact expansions of Fraïssé classes via functorial means, inspired by the technique outlined by Laflamme, Nguyen Van Thé and Sauer in their paper Partition properties of the dense local order and a colored version of Milliken's theorem arXiv:0710.2885. We also generalize the expansion property and prove that categorical precompact expansions grant upper bounds for Ramsey degrees. Moreover, we show under strict conditions, we can also compute big Ramsey degrees. We also apply our methodology to calculate the big and little Ramsey degrees of the objects in Age$(\mathbf{S}(n))$ for all $n\geq 2$.
Big Ramsey spectra of countable chains
A big Ramsey spectrum of a countable chain (i.e. strict linear order) C is a sequence of big Ramsey degrees of finite chains computed in C. In this paper we consider big Ramsey spectra of countable scattered chains. We prove that countable scattered chains of infinite Hausdorff rank do not have finite big Ramsey spectra, and that countable scattered chains of finite Hausdorff rank with bounded finite sums have finite big Ramsey spectra. Since big Ramsey spectra of all non-scattered countable chains are finite by results of Galvin, Laver and Devlin, in order to complete the characterization of countable chains with finite big Ramsey spectra (or degrees) one still has to resolve the remaining case of countable scattered chains of finite Hausdorff rank whose finite sums are not bounded.
Ramsey Theory on Infinite Structures and the Method of Strong Coding Trees
This article discusses some recent trends in Ramsey theory on infinite structures. Trees and their Ramsey theory have been vital to these investigations. The main ideas behind the author's recent method of trees with coding nodes are presented, showing how they can be useful both for coding structures with forbidden configurations as well as those with none. Using forcing as a tool for finite searches has allowed the development of Ramsey theory on such trees, leading to solutions for finite big Ramsey degrees of Henson graphs as well as infinite dimensional Ramsey theory of copies of the Rado graph. Possible future directions for applications of these methods are discussed.
Big Ramsey degrees of 3-uniform hypergraphs
Given a countably infinite hypergraph $\mathcal R$ and a finite hypergraph $\mathcal A$, the big Ramsey degree of $\mathcal A$ in $\mathcal R$ is the least number $L$ such that, for every finite $k$ and every $k$-colouring of the embeddings of $\mathcal A$ to $\mathcal R$, there exists an embedding $f$ from $\mathcal R$ to $\mathcal R$ such that all the embeddings of $\mathcal A$ to the image $f(\mathcal R)$ have at most $L$ different colours.
We describe the big Ramsey degrees of the random countably infinite 3-uniform hypergraph, thereby solving a question of Sauer. We also give a new presentation of the results of Devlin and Sauer on, respectively, big Ramsey degrees of the order of the rationals and the countably infinite random graph. Our techniques generalise (in a natural way) to relational structures and give new examples of Ramsey structures (a concept recently introduced by Zucker with applications to topological dynamics).
Countable ordinals and big Ramsey degrees
In this paper we consider big Ramsey degrees of finite chains in countable ordinals. We prove that a countable ordinal has finite big Ramsey degrees if and only if it is smaller than $ω^ω$. Big Ramsey degrees of finite chains in all other countable ordinals are infinite.
The Ramsey Theory of Henson graphs
Analogues of Ramsey's Theorem for infinite structures such as the rationals or the Rado graph have been known for some time. In this context, one looks for optimal bounds, called degrees, for the number of colors in an isomorphic substructure rather than one color, as that is often impossible. Such theorems for Henson graphs however remained elusive, due to lack of techniques for handling forbidden cliques. Building on the author's recent result for the triangle-free Henson graph, we prove that for each $k\ge 4$, the $k$-clique-free Henson graph has finite big Ramsey degrees, the appropriate analogue of Ramsey's Theorem.
We develop a method for coding copies of Henson graphs into a new class of trees, called strong coding trees, and prove Ramsey theorems for these trees which are applied to deduce finite big Ramsey degrees. The approach here provides a general methodology opening further study of big Ramsey degrees for ultrahomogeneous structures. The results have bearing on topological dynamics via work of Kechris, Pestov, and Todorcevic and of Zucker.
Finite big Ramsey degrees in universal structures
Big Ramsey degrees of finite structures are usually considered with respect to a Fraï ssé limit. Building mainly on the work of Devlin, Sauer, Laflamme and Van Thé, in this paper we consider structures which are not Fraï ssé limits, and still have the property that their finite substructures have finite big Ramsey degrees in them. For example, the class of all finite acyclic oriented graphs is not a Fraï ssé class, and yet we show that there is a countably infinite acyclic oriented graph in which every finite acyclic oriented graph has finite big Ramsey degree. Our main tools come from category theory as it has recently become evident that the Ramsey property is not only a deep combinatorial property, but also a genuine categorical property.
Finite Ramsey degrees and Fraïssé expansions with the Ramsey property
By a result of Zucker, every Fraïssé structure $\bf F$ for which the elements of $\mathrm{Age}(\bf F)$ have finite Ramsey degrees admits a Fraïssé precompact expansion $\bf F^{*}$ whose age $\mathrm{Age}(\bf F^{*})$ has the Ramsey property. While the original method uses dynamics in spaces of ultrafilters, the purpose of the present short note is to provide a different proof, based on classical tools from Fraïssé theory.
Forcing in Ramsey theory
Ramsey theory and forcing have a symbiotic relationship. At the RIMS Symposium on Infinite Combinatorics and Forcing Theory in 2016, the author gave three tutorials on Ramsey theory in forcing. The first two tutorials concentrated on forcings which contain dense subsets forming topological Ramsey spaces. These forcings motivated the development of new Ramsey theory, which then was applied to the generic ultrafilters to obtain the precise structure Rudin-Keisler and Tukey orders below such ultrafilters. The content of the first two tutorials has appeared in an expository article submitted to the SEALS 2016 Proceedings. The third tutorial concentrated on uses of forcing to prove Ramsey theorems for trees which are applied to determine big Ramsey degrees of homogeneous relational structures. This is the focus of this paper.

We consider Fraïssé structures whose objects have finite big Ramsey degree and ask what consequences this has for the dynamics of the automorphism group. Motivated by a theorem of D. Devlin about the partition properties of the rationals, we define the notion of a big Ramsey structure, a single structure which codes the big Ramsey degrees of a given Fraïssé structure. This in turn leads to the definition of a completion flow; we show that if a Fraïssé structure admits a big Ramsey structure, then the automorphism group admits a unique universal completion flow. We also discuss the problem of when big Ramsey structures exist and explore connections to the notion of oscillation stability defined by Kechris, Pestov, and Todorčević
