Finitely additive measures on $\mathbb Z$ and additive combinatorics
We study (bounded) finitely additive measures on the group of integers $\mathbb Z$, as elements of the Banach algebra $\mathrm{ba}(\mathbb Z)$, viewed as a natural generalization of ultrafilters. The algebraic structure of $\mathrm{ba}(\mathbb Z)$ extends the semigroup structure of the Čech--Stone compactification, allowing methods from ultrafilter theory to be applied in a broader measure-theoretic setting. We investigate idempotent finitely additive measures and establish additive properties of subsets of $\mathbb Z$ having positive measure. We then proceed to study almost translation-invariant and translation-invariant finitely additive measures, showing that these stronger notions yield correspondingly stronger additive conclusions. In particular, we prove that every subset of $\mathbb Z$ whose measure exceeds a certain explicit threshold necessarily is an $\mathsf{IP}_{n}$-set; with stronger properties and lower thresholds depending on the properties of the relevant measures. Several examples illustrating the sharpness and limitations of the results are also presented, together with a discussion of open problems and directions for future research.
Recurrence in a dynamical system over adequate partial semigroups
Using tools from topological dynamics, H.~Furstenberg introduced the notion of \emph{central sets} and established the celebrated Central Sets Theorem. The sets which satisfy the conclusion of the Central Sets Theorem are called $C$-sets. Hindman, Maleki, and Strauss first brought the concept of an important type of $C$-sets called the quasi-central sets which are not central sets. In 2017, A. Ghosh gave the combinatorial treatment of $C$-sets in commutative adequate partial semigroups, where $C$-sets are the sets which satisfy the conclusion of Central Sets Theorem for commutative adequate partial semigroups. In this work, we discuss the Quasi-central sets algebraically and dynamically for commutative adequate partial semigroups. We give dynamical characterization of members of idempotent ultrafilters for commutative adequate partial semigroups, also we study the minimal dynamical systems for an adequate partial semigroup.
A simultaneous extension of Ramsey, Hindman, and Hales-Jewett Theorems
We prove a multidimensional extension of a strong Hales-Jewett theorem that simultaneously and "directly" extends Ramsey's theorem and Hindman's theorem. The proofs show the effectiveness and simplicity of the techniques based on iterated nonstandard extensions that have been recently developed. Unlike existing ultrafilter proofs, our arguments to prove the strong Hales-Jewett theorem assume neither minimal nor idempotent ultrafilters. To demonstrate this, we translate our proof of the strong Hales-Jewett theorem into an ultrafilter proof that requires only non-principal ultrafilters.
$\mathbb Z$-Ramsey ultrafilters
We study $\mathbb{Z}$-Ramsey ultrafilters, ultrafilters containing witnesses to every shift-invariant instance of Ramsey's theorem. We prove that it is consistent that there are no $\mathbb Z$-Ramsey ultrafilters. We also prove that every $(\mathbb{Z},3)$-Ramsey ultrafilter, as well as every $\mathbb{Z}$-Ramsey P-point, is selective. Further, we exhibit a generic extension -- using quotient algebras of the form \(\mathcal{P}(\mathbb{Z})/\mathcal{I}\) for certain \(F_{σ}\)-ideals -- that contains P-points that are not \(\mathbb{Z}\)-Ramsey ultrafilters, thereby addressing open questions raised by Petrenko and Protasov.
Combinatorics of Schur ultrafilters
In this paper, we provide a combinatorial characterization of the elements of Schur ultrafilters on countable commutative groups. Using this characterization, we construct a free Schur ultrafilter on $\mathbb Z$ that is not infinitary Schur. Moreover, assuming the Continuum Hypothesis, we establish the existence of a free Schur P-point on $\mathbb Z$.
Rivisiting the Hales--Jewett Theorem
This short note establishes an abstract Hales--Jewett theorem for semigroups equipped with a finite family of retractions. The proof relies on the interplay between retractions and tensor products of ultrafilters.
Equivalences of promise compactness principles
For a pair of finite relational structures $(\mathfrak{A},\mathfrak{B})$ such that $\mathfrak{A}$ homomorphically maps to $\mathfrak{B}$ we denote by $K_{(\mathfrak{A},\mathfrak{B})}$ the following statement: for all structures $\mathfrak{I}$ with the same signature as $\mathfrak{A}$ if all finite substructures of $\mathfrak{I}$ homomorphically maps to $\mathfrak{A}$ then $\mathfrak{I}$ homomorphically maps to $\mathfrak{B}$. In this article, we show that if $(\mathfrak{A},\mathfrak{B})$ has no Olšák polymorphism, then $K_{(\mathfrak{A},\mathfrak{B})}$ is equivalent to the ultrafilter principle over $\operatorname{ZF}$. This includes the statements $K_{(K_3,K_5)}$ and $K_{(H_2,H_c)}$ for all $c\geq 2$ where $K_n$ denotes the clique of size $n$ and $H_k$ denotes the ternary not-all-equal structure on a $k$-element set. This means, for example, that in any $\operatorname{ZF}$ model, if every finitely 3-colourable graph can be coloured by 5 colours then all these graphs can in fact be coloured by 3 colours.
A new ultrafilter proof of Van der Waerden's theorem
We present a new short proof of Van der Waerden's Theorem about the existence of arbitrarily long monochromatic arithmetic progressions. The proof uses algebra in the compact space of ultrafilters $β\N$, but contrarily to the other existing proofs, neither minimal nor idempotent ultrafilters are involved.
On BPI in Symmetric Extensions Part 1
Historically, proofs of $\mathrm{BPI}$ in models without choice have relied on a contradiction framework that was introduced by Halpern. We introduce the filter extension property for permutation models and symmetric extensions, which formalizes the naïve approach to extend arbitrary filters to ultrafilters by repeatedly extending filters by minimal increments. We use this framework to give the first direct proof of $\mathrm{BPI}$ in the generalized Cohen model $N(I,Q)$ -- a model that adds a Dedekind-finite set of mutually $Q$-generic filters over a ground model $M\vDash\mathrm{ZFC}$. In the case that the index set $I$ is large, we adapt Harrington's proof of the Halpern-Läuchli theorem to prove the result. We then extend the results from Karagila and Schlicht to show that $I$ can be assumed to be large without loss of generality. The approach given by Harrington's proof is essentially dynamical, and we show that this technique can be used in permutation models to reprove a direction of Blass' theorem: that a dynamical condition called the Ramsey property is sufficient for $\mathrm{BPI}$ to hold in a permutation model. We then introduce a dynamical generalization of the Ramsey property called the virtual Ramsey property, which abstracts core features of our adaptation of Harrington's proof, and we prove that the virtual Ramsey property is sufficient for $\mathrm{BPI}$ to hold in a symmetric extension.
Submonoids of Infinite Symmetric Inverse Monoids
In this thesis we study the subsemigroup structure of the symmetric inverse monoid $I_X$, the inverse semigroup of bijections between subsets of the set $X$, when $X$ is an infinite set. We explore three different approaches to this task. First, we classify the maximal subsemigroups of $I_X$ containing certain subgroups of the symmetric group on $X$. The subgroups in question are the symmetric group itself, the pointwise stabiliser of a finite non-empty subset of $X$, the stabiliser of an ultrafilter on $X$, and the stabiliser of a finite partition of $X$. Next, we study subsemigroups of $I_X$ which are closed in semigroup topologies on $I_X$ introduced by Elliot et al. in 2023. We discover that the closed subsemigroups in these topologies that contain all the idempotents of $I_X$ coincide exactly with semigroups of partial endomorphisms and partial automorphisms of relational structures defined on $X$. Furthermore, we show that if a relational structure $R$ on a countable set $X$ only contains a finite number of relations, then there exists a finite subset $U$ of $I_X$ such that the union of the partial automorphisms of $R$ together with $U$ generates all of $I_X$. Finally, we study the subsemigroup structure of $I_X$ under a preorder introduced by George Bergman and Saharon Shelah in 2006 for the symmetric group. Extending the preorder to $I_X$, if $S_1$ and $S_2$ are subsemigroups of $I_X$, we say that $S_1 \preccurlyeq S_2$ if there exists a finite subset $U$ of $I_X$ such that $S_1$ is contained in the semigroup generated by the union of $S_2$ and $U$. We classify certain types of subsemigroups of $I_X$ according the Bergman-Shelah preorder, and we formulate a conjecture analogous to the main result by Bergman and Shelah.
The magic of tensor products of ultrafilters
Tensor products of ultrafilters have special combinatorial features closely related to Ramsey's Theorem, making them useful tools in applications. Here we first review their fundamental properties and isolate some new ones, including a characterisation of the limit superior and inferior of sequences as limits along tensor products, and an application to the Banach asymptotic density. We then prove a general result on the combinatorial structure of sets belonging to tensor products and, as a result, we obtain several characterisations of the additive properties of sets of natural numbers. Finally, we show that tensor products can be described as idempotents of an appropriate semigroup.
Ramsey's witnesses
We introduce the notion of Ramsey partition regularity, a generalisation of partition regularity involving infinitary configurations. We provide characterisations of this notion in terms of certain ultrafilters related to tensor products and dubbed Ramsey's witnesses; and we also consider their nonstandard counterparts as pairs of hypernatural numbers, called Ramsey pairs. These characterisations are then used to determine whether various configurations involving polynomials and exponentials are Ramsey partition regular over the natural numbers.
Følner, Banach, and translation density are equal and other new results about density in left amenable semigroups
In any semigroup $S$ satisfying the Strong Folner Condition, there are three natural notions of density for a subset $A$ of $S$: Folner density $d(A)$, Banach density $d^*(A)$, and translation density $d_t(A)$. If $S$ is commutative or left cancellative, it is known that these three notions coincide. We shall show that these notions coincide for every semigroup $S$ which satisfies the Strong Folner Condition. Using this fact, we solve a problem that has been open for decades, showing that the set of ultrafilters every member of which has positive Folner density is a two sided ideal of $βS$. We also show that, if $S$ is a left amenable semigroup, then the set of ultrafilters every member of which has positive Banach density is a two sided ideal of $βS$. We investigate the density properties of subsets of $S$ in the case in which the minimal left ideals of the Stone-Čech compactification $βS$ are singletons. This occurs in many familiar examples, including all semilattices and all semigroups which have a right zero. We show that this is equivalent to the statement that $S$ satisfies the Strong Folner Condition and that, for every subset $A$ of $S$, $d(A)\in \{0,1\}$. We also examine the relation between the density properties of two semigroups when one is a quotient of the other. The Folner density of a subset of $S$ is always determined by some Folner net in $S$. We show that an arbitrary Folner net in $S$ determines the density of all of the subsets of $S$. And we prove that, if $S$ and $T$ are left amenable semigroups, then $d^*(A\times B)=d^*(A)d^*(B)$ for every subset $A$ of $S$ and every subset $B$ of $T$.
Exponential Schur and Hindman Theorem in Ramsey Theory
Answering a conjecture of A. Sisto, J. Sahasrabudhe proved the exponential version of the Schur theorem: for every finite coloring of the naturals, there exists a monochromatic copy of $\{x,y,x^y:x\neq y\},$ which initiates the study of exponential Ramsey theory in arithmetic combinatorics. In this article, We first give two short proofs of the exponential Schur theorem, one using Zorn's lemma and another using $IP_r^\star$ van der Waerden's theorem. Then using the polynomial van der Waerden theorem iteratively we give a proof of the exponential Hindman theorem. Then applying our results we prove for every natural number $m,n$ the equation $x_n^{x_{n-1}^{\cdot^{\cdot^{\cdot^{x_1}}}}}=y_1\cdots y_m$ is partition regular, which can be considered as the exponential version of a more general version of the P. Csikvári, K. Gyarmati, and A. Sárközy conjecture, which was solved by V. Bergelson and N. Hindman independently. As a consequence of our results, we also prove that for every finite partition of $\mathbb{N},$ there exists two different sequences $\langle x_n\rangle_n$ and $\langle y_n\rangle_n$ such that both the multiplicative and exponential version of Hindman theorem generated by these sequences resp. are monochromatic, whereas in the counterpart in the finitary case, J. Sahasrabudhe proved that both sequences are the same. Our result can be considered as an exponential analog to the result of V. Bergelson and N. Hindman. We also prove that a large class of ultrafilters with certain properties do not exist, which could give us direct proof of the exponential Schur theorem. This result can be thought of as partial evidence of the nonexistence of Galvin-Glazer's proof of the exponential Hindman theorem.
Restricted van der Waerden theorem for nilprogressions
In [Adv. Math., 321 (2017) 269-286], using the theory of ultrafilters, J. H. Johnson Jr., and F. K. Richter proved the nilpotent polynomial Hales-Jewett theorem. Using this result they proved the restricted version of the van der Waerden theorem for nilprogressions of rank $2$ and conjectured that this result must hold for arbitrary rank. In this article, we give an affirmative answer to their conjecture.
Dynamically syndetic sets and the combinatorics of syndetic, idempotent filters
A subset of the positive integers is dynamically central syndetic if it contains the times that a point returns to a neighborhood of itself in a minimal topological dynamical system. These sets are part of the highly-influential link between dynamics and combinatorics forged by Furstenberg and Weiss in the 1970's. Our main result is a characterization of dynamically central syndetic sets as precisely those sets that belong to syndetic, idempotent filters. This gives a "global" analogue to the well-known "local" characterization of Furstenberg's central sets as members of minimal, idempotent ultrafilters. Applying the main result, we answer two open questions posed by Host, Kra, and Maass concerning sets of pointwise topological recurrence.
Various Properties of Various Ultrafilters, Various Graph Width Parameters, and Various Connectivity Systems (with Survey)
This paper investigates ultrafilters in the context of connectivity systems, defined as pairs $(X, f)$ where $X$ is a finite set and $f$ is a symmetric submodular function. Ultrafilters, essential in topology and set theory, are extended to these systems, with a focus on their relationship to graph width parameters, which help analyze graph complexity. We demonstrate theorems for ultrafilters on connectivity systems and explore related concepts such as prefilters, ultra-prefilters, and subbases. New parameters for width, length, and depth are introduced, providing further insight into graph width. The study also includes a comparison of various graph width parameters and their related concepts, offering a foundation for future research in graph theory and computational complexity. Additionally, we explore connections to other mathematical disciplines, including set theory, lattice theory, and matroid theory, expanding the scope of ultrafilters and graph width. (It also includes information similar to that found in surveys, aiming to promote future research on graph width parameters.)
Dynamical characterization of central sets in adequate partial semigroups
Using the methods from topological dynamics, H. Furstenberg introduced the notions of Central sets and proved the famous Central Sets Theorem which is the simultaneous extension of the van der Waerden and Hindman Theorem. Later N. Hindman and V. Bergelson found an equivalent formulation of Central sets in the set of natural numbers in terms of the algebra of the Stone-Čech compactification of discrete semigroups. The general case was proved by H. Shi and H. Yang. Using the notions of ultrafilters, J. McLeod introduced the notions of Central sets for commutative adequate partial semigroups, however for noncommutative cases, Central sets can be defined similarly. In this article, introducing the notions of topological dynamics for partial semigroup actions, we find an equivalent dynamical characterization of central sets in partial semigroups\footnote{Recently in \cite{GTG}, authors attempted to do the same but in a different approach.}. Throughout our article, we follow the approach of N. Hindman and D. Strauss [N. Hindman, and D. Strauss: Algebra in the Stone-\v Cech compactification: theory and applications, second edition, de Gruyter, Berlin, 2012.].
Multiplicative largeness of $\textit{de Polignac numbers}$
A number $m$ is said to be a $\textit{de Polignac number}$, if infinitely many pairs of consecutive primes exist, such that $m$ can be written as the difference of those consecutive prime numbers. Recently in [ W. D. Banks: Consecutive primes and IP sets, arXiv:2403.10637.], using arguments from the Ramsey theory, W. D. Banks proved that the collection of $\textit{de Polignac number}$ is an $IP^\star$ set (Though his original statement is relatively weaker, an iterative application of pigeonhole principle/ theory of ultrafilters shows that this statement is sufficient to conclude the set is $IP^\star$). As a consequence, we have this collection as an additively syndetic set. In this article, we show that this collection is also a multiplicative syndetic set. In our proof, we use combinatorial arguments and the tools from the algebra of the Stone-Čech compactification of discrete semigroups (for details see [N. Hindman, and D. Strauss: Algebra in the Stone-Čech Compactification: Theory and Applications, second edition, de Gruyter, Berlin,2012.]).
Monochromatic Polynomial sumset structures on $\mathbb{N}$: an ultrafilter proof
Recently, using machinery's from Ergodic theory, Z. Lian, and R. Xiao proved if $P$ is any polynomial with no constant term, then for every finite coloring of $\mathbb{N}$, there exists two infinite subsets $B,C$ of $\mathbb{N}$ such that the set $\{P(b)+P(c):b\in B, c\in C\}$ is monochromatic. In this article we improve their result by proving that instead of taking such polynomials we can choose any function $f$ having the property that $f(\mathbb{N})\setminus \mathbb{N}$ is finite. We use ultrafilter techniques to prove our result.
