A nonstandard take on central sets
We present the basic theory of central subsets of semigroups from the nonstandard perspective. A key feature of this perspective is the replacement of the algebra of ultrafilters with the algebra of elements of iterated hyperextensions, a technique first employed by Mauro Di Nasso.
Ramsey subsets of the space of infinite block sequences of vectors
We study families of infinite block sequences of elements of the space $\FIN_k$. In particular we study Ramsey properties of such families and Ramsey properties localized to a selective or semiselective coideal. We show how the stable ordered-union ultrafilters defined by Blass, and Matet-adequate families defined by Eisworth in the case $k=1$ fit in the theory of the Ramsey space of infinite block sequences of finite sets of natural numbers.
Hindman's finite sums theorem and its application to topologizations of algebras
The first part of the paper is a brief overview of Hindman's finite sums theorem, its prehistory and a few of its further generalizations, and a modern technique used in proving these and similar results, which is based on idempotent ultrafilters in ultrafilter extensions of semigroups. The second, main part of the paper is devoted to the topologizability problem of a wide class of algebraic structures called polyrings; this class includes Abelian groups, rings, modules, algebras over a ring, differential rings, and others. We show that the Zariski topology of such an algebra is always non-discrete. Actually, a much stronger fact holds: if $K$ is an infinite polyring, $n$ a natural number, and a map $F$ of $K^n$ into $K$ is defined by a term in $n$ variables, then $F$ is a closed nowhere dense subset of the space $K^{n+1}$ with its Zariski topology. In particular, $K^n$ is a closed nowhere dense subset of $K^{n+1}$. The proof essentially uses a multidimensional version of Hindman's finite sums theorem. The third part of the paper lists several problems concerning topologization of various algebraic structures, their Zariski topologies, and related questions.
Graphs, Ultrafilters and Colourability
Let $β$ be the functor from Set to CHaus which maps each discrete set X to its Stone-Cech compactification, the set $β$ X of ultrafilters on X. Every graph G with vertex set V naturally gives rise to a graph $βG$ on the set $βV$ of ultrafilters on V . In what follows, we interrelate the properties of G and $βG$. Perhaps the most striking result is that G can be finitely coloured iff $βG$ has no loops.

Ultrafilters are a tool, originating in mathematical logic and general topology, that has steadily found more and more uses in multiple areas of mathematics, such as combinatorics, dynamics, and algebra, among others. The purpose of this article is to introduce ultrafilters in a friendly manner and present some applications to the branch of combinatorics known as Ramsey theory, culminating with a new ultrafilter-based proof of van der Waerden's theorem.
Finite Ramsey degrees and Fraïssé expansions with the Ramsey property
By a result of Zucker, every Fraïssé structure $\bf F$ for which the elements of $\mathrm{Age}(\bf F)$ have finite Ramsey degrees admits a Fraïssé precompact expansion $\bf F^{*}$ whose age $\mathrm{Age}(\bf F^{*})$ has the Ramsey property. While the original method uses dynamics in spaces of ultrafilters, the purpose of the present short note is to provide a different proof, based on classical tools from Fraïssé theory.
Metrically Ramsey ultrafilters

Given a metric space $(X,d)$, we say that a mapping $χ: [X]^{2}\longrightarrow\{0.1\}$ is an isometric coloring if $d(x,y)=d(z,t)$ implies $χ(\{x,y\})=χ(\{z,t\})$. A free ultrafilter $\mathcal{U}$ on an infinite metric space $(X,d)$ is called metrically Ramsey if, for every isometric coloring $χ$ of $[X]^{2}$, there is a member $U\in\mathcal{U}$ such that the set $[U]^{2}$ is $χ$-monochrome. We prove that each infinite ultrametric space $(X,d)$ has a countable subset $Y$ such that each free ultrafilter $\mathcal{U}$ on $X$ satisfying $Y\in\mathcal{U}$ is metrically Ramsey. On the other hand, it is an open question whether every metrically Ramsey ultrafilter on the natural numbers $\mathbb{N}$ with the metric $|x-y|$ is a Ramsey ultrafilter. We prove that every metrically Ramsey ultrafilter $\mathcal{U}$ on $\mathbb{N}$ has a member with no arithmetic progression of length 2, and if $\mathcal{U}$ has a thin member then there is a mapping $f:\mathbb{N}\longrightarrowω$ such that $f(\mathcal{U})$ is a Ramsey ultrafilter.
Forcing in Ramsey theory
Ramsey theory and forcing have a symbiotic relationship. At the RIMS Symposium on Infinite Combinatorics and Forcing Theory in 2016, the author gave three tutorials on Ramsey theory in forcing. The first two tutorials concentrated on forcings which contain dense subsets forming topological Ramsey spaces. These forcings motivated the development of new Ramsey theory, which then was applied to the generic ultrafilters to obtain the precise structure Rudin-Keisler and Tukey orders below such ultrafilters. The content of the first two tutorials has appeared in an expository article submitted to the SEALS 2016 Proceedings. The third tutorial concentrated on uses of forcing to prove Ramsey theorems for trees which are applied to determine big Ramsey degrees of homogeneous relational structures. This is the focus of this paper.
Topological Ramsey Spaces Dense in Forcings

Topological Ramsey spaces are spaces which support infinite dimensional Ramsey theory similarly to the Ellentuck space. Each topological Ramsey space is endowed with a partial ordering which can be modified to a $σ$-closed `almost reduction' relation analogously to the partial ordering of `mod finite' on $[ω]^ω$. Such forcings add new ultrafilters satisfying weak partition relations and have complete combinatorics. In cases where a forcing turned out to be equivalent to a topological Ramsey space, the strong Ramsey-theoretic techniques have aided in a fine-tuned analysis of the Rudin-Keisler and Tukey structures associated with the forced ultrafilter and in discovering new ultrafilters with complete combinatorics. This expository paper provides an overview of this collection of results and an entry point for those interested in using topological Ramsey space techniques to gain finer insight into ultrafilters satisfying weak partition relations.
Monoid actions and ultrafilter methods in Ramsey theory

First, we prove a theorem on dynamics of actions of monoids by endomorphisms of semigroups. Second, we introduce algebraic structures suitable for formalizing infinitary Ramsey statements and prove a theorem that such statements are implied by existence of appropriate homomorphisms between the algebraic structures. We make a connection between the two themes above, which allows us to prove some general Ramsey theorems for sequences. We give a new proof of the Furstenberg--Katznelson Ramsey theorem; in fact, we obtain a version of this theorem that is stronger than the original one. We answer in the negative a question of Lupini on possible extensions of Gowers' Ramsey theorem.
Hyperfiniteness and Borel combinatorics

We study the relationship between hyperfiniteness and problems in Borel graph combinatorics by adapting game-theoretic techniques introduced by Marks to the hyperfinite setting. We compute the possible Borel chromatic numbers and edge chromatic numbers of bounded degree acyclic hyperfinite Borel graphs and use this to answer a question of Kechris and Marks about the relationship between Borel chromatic number and measure chromatic number. We also show that for every $d > 1$ there is a $d$-regular acyclic hyperfinite Borel bipartite graph with no Borel perfect matching. These techniques also give examples of hyperfinite bounded degree Borel graphs for which the Borel local lemma fails, in contrast to the recent results of Csóka, Grabowski, Máthé, Pikhurko, and Tyros.
Related to the Borel Ruziewicz problem, we show there is a continuous paradoxical action of $(\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z})^{*3}$ on a Polish space that admits a finitely additive invariant Borel probability measure, but admits no countably additive invariant Borel probability measure. In the context of studying ultrafilters on the quotient space of equivalence relations under $\mathrm{AD}$, we also construct an ultrafilter $U$ on the quotient of $E_0$ which has surprising complexity. In particular, Martin's measure is Rudin-Kiesler reducible to $U$.
We end with a problem about whether every hyperfinite bounded degree Borel graph has a witness to its hyperfiniteness which is uniformly bounded below in size.

We define and undertake a systematic study of thick, syndetic, and piecewise syndetic subsets of a Fraïssé structure. Each of these collections forms a family in the sense of Akin and Glasner [AG], and we define and study ultrafilters on each of these families, paying special attention to ultrafilters on the thick sets. In the process, we generalize many results of Bergelson, Hindman, and McCutcheon [BHM]. We also discuss some abstract questions about families implicit in the work of Akin and Glasner.
Monochromatic factorisations of words and periodicity

In 2006 T. Brown asked the following question: Given a non-periodic infinite word $x=x_1x_2x_3\cdots$ with values in a non-empty set $\mathbb{A},$ does there exist a finite coloring $\varphi: \mathbb{A}^+\rightarrow C$ relative to which $x$ does not admit a $\varphi$-monochromatic factorisation, i.e., a factorisation of the form $x=u_1u_2u_3\cdots$ with $\varphi(u_i)=\varphi(u_j)$ for all $i,j\geq 1$? Various partial results in support of an affirmative answer to this question have appeared in the literature in recent years. In particular it is known that the question admits an affirmative answer for all non-uniformly recurrent words and various classes of uniformly recurrent words including Sturmian words. In this note we answer this question in general by showing that if $x=x_1x_2x_3\cdots$ is an infinite word with values in a non-empty set $\mathbb{A},$ then $x$ is periodic if and only if for every $2$-coloring $\varphi: \mathbb{A}^+\rightarrow \{0,1\}$ there exists a $\varphi$-monochromatic factorisation of $x.$ This characterization of periodicity of infinite words may be reformulated in the language of ultrafilters. Let $β\mathbb{A}^+$ denote the Stone-Cech compactification of the discrete semigroup $\mathbb{A}^+$ which we regard as the set of all ultrafilters on $\mathbb{A}^+.$ Then $x$ is periodic if and only if there exists $p\in β\mathbb{A}^+$ such that for each $A\in p$ there exists a factorisation $x=u_1u_2u_3\cdots $ with each $u_i \in A.$

We prove general sufficient and necessary conditions for the partition regularity of Diophantine equations, which extend the classic Rado's Theorem by covering large classes of nonlinear equations. Sufficient conditions are obtained by exploiting algebraic properties in the space of ultrafilters betaN, grounding on combinatorial properties of positive density sets and IP sets. Necessary conditions are proved by a new technique in nonstandard analysis, based on the use of the relation of u-equivalence for the hypernatural numbers *N.

We show that an arbitrary infinite graph can be compactified by its ${\aleph_0}$-tangles in much the same way as the ends of a locally finite graph compactify it in its Freudenthal compactification. In general, the ends then appear as a subset of its ${\aleph_0}$-tangles.
The ${\aleph_0}$-tangles of a graph are shown to form an inverse limit of the ultrafilters on the sets of components obtained by deleting a finite set of vertices. The ${\aleph_0}$-tangles that are ends are precisely the limits of principal ultrafilters.
The ${\aleph_0}$-tangles that correspond to a highly connected part, or $\aleph_0$-block, of the graph are shown to be precisely those that are closed in the topological space of its finite-order separations.
Measure preserving actions of affine semigroups and {x+y,xy} patterns

Ergodic and combinatorial results obtained in [10] involved measure preserving actions of the affine group ${\mathcal A}_K$ of a countable field $K$. In this paper we develop a new approach based on ultrafilter limits which allows one to refine and extend the results obtained in [10] to a more general situation involving the measure preserving actions of the non-amenable affine semigroups of a large class of integral domains. (The results in [10] heavily depend on the amenability of the affine group of a field). Among other things, we obtain, as a corollary of an ultrafilter ergodic theorem, the following result: Let $K$ be a number field and let ${\mathcal O}_K$ be the ring of integers of $K$. For any finite partition $K=C_1\cup\cdots\cup C_r$ there exists $i\in\{1,\dots,r\}$ and many $x\in K$ and $y\in{\mathcal O}_K$ such that $\{x+y,xy\}\subset C_i$.
Local Ramsey theory. An abstract approach

Given a topological Ramsey space $(\mathcal R,\leq, r)$, we extend the notion of semiselective coideal to sets $\mathcal H\subseteq\mathcal R$ and study conditions for $\mathcal H$ that will enable us to make the structure $(\mathcal R,\mathcal H,\leq, r)$ a Ramsey space (not necessarily topological) and also study forcing notions related to $\mathcal H$ which will satisfy abstract versions of interesting properties of the corresponding forcing notions in the realm of Ellentuck's space. This extends results of Farah, and results of Mijares, to the most general context of topological Ramsey spaces. As applications, we prove that for every topological Ramsey space $\mathcal R$, under suitable large cardinal hypotheses every semiselective ultrafilter $\mathcal U\subseteq\mathcal R$ is generic over $L(\mathbb R)$; and that given a semiselective coideal $\mathcal H\subseteq\mathcal R$, every definable subset of $\mathcal R$ is $\mathcal H$--Ramsey. This generalizes the corresponding results for the case when $\mathcal R$ is equal to Ellentuck's space.

In the 1970s Deuber introduced the notion of $(m,p,c)$-sets in $\mathbb{N}$ and showed that these sets are partition regular and contain all linear partition regular configurations in $\mathbb{N}$. In this paper we obtain enhancements and extensions of classical results on $(m,p,c)$-sets in two directions. First, we show, with the help of ultrafilter techniques, that Deuber's results extend to polynomial configurations in abelian groups. In particular, we obtain new partition regular polynomial configurations in $\mathbb{Z}^d$. Second, we give two proofs of a generalization of Deuber's results to general commutative semigroups. We also obtain a polynomial version of the central sets theorem of Furstenberg, extend the theory of $(m,p,c)$-systems of Deuber, Hindman and Lefmann and generalize a classical theorem of Rado regarding partition regularity of linear systems of equations over $\mathbb{N}$ to commutative semigroups.
Combinatorial proofs of Gowers' FIN$_k$ and FIN$_k^\pm$ theorem
A combinatorial proof of a pigeonhole principle of Gowers is found along with its symmetric and approximate version, FIN$_k^\pm$ theorem. The proofs do not use of the concept of ultrafilter.
F-finite embeddabilities of sets and ultrafilters
Let $S$ be a semigroup, let $n\in\mathbb{N}$ be a positive natural number, let $A,B\subseteq S$, let $\mathcal{U},\mathcal{V}\inβS$ and let let $\mathcal{F}\subseteq\{f:S^{n}\rightarrow S\}$. We say that $A$ is $\mathcal{F}$-finitely embeddable in $B$ if for every finite set $F\subseteq A$ there is a function $f\in\mathcal{F}$ such that $f\left(A^{n}\right)\subseteq B$, and we say that $\mathcal{U}$ is $\mathcal{F}$-finitely embeddable in $\mathcal{V}$ if for every set $B\in\mathcal{V}$ there is a set $A\in\mathcal{U}$ such that $A$ is $\mathcal{F}$-finitely embeddable in $B$. We show that $\mathcal{F}$-finite embeddabilities can be used to study certain combinatorial properties of sets and ultrafilters related with finite structures. We introduce the notions of set and of ultrafilter maximal for $\mathcal{F}$-finite embeddability, whose existence is proved under very mild assumptions. Different choices of $\mathcal{F}$ can be used to characterize many combinatorially interesting sets/ultrafilters as maximal sets/ultrafilters, for example thick sets, AP-rich sets, $\overline{K(βS)}$ and so on. The set of maximal ultrafilters for $\mathcal{F}$-finite embeddability can be characterized algebraically in terms of $\mathcal{F}$. This property can be used to give an algebraic characterization of certain interesting sets of ultrafilters, such as the ultrafilters whose elements contain, respectively, arbitrarily long arithmetic, geoarithmetic or polynomial progressions. As a consequence of the connection between sets and ultrafilters maximal for $\mathcal{F}$-finite embeddability we are able to prove a general result that entails, for example, that given a finite partition of a set that contains arbitrarily long geoarithmetic (resp. polynomial) progressions, one cell must contain arbitrarily long geoarithmetic (resp. polynomial) progressions.
