Pythagorean triples in level sets of completely multiplicative functions
We show that given completely multiplicative functions $f_1,\dots,f_d$ taking values in the unit circle, there exist Pythagorean triples (i.e., integer solutions to $x^2+y^2=z^2$) with $f_i(x),f_i(y),f_i(z)$ all arbitrarily close to $1$ for all $i$. This is a new special case of the conjecture that any finite colouring of $\mathbb{N}$ has a monochromatic Pythagorean triple. Our proof combines vanishing averages for aperiodic functions with concentration estimates for pretentious functions. A similar proof is applied to obtain the analogous statement for more general equations of the form $ax^2+by^2=cz^2$ whenever $a,b,c$ are perfect squares satisfying the Rado's condition.
A short proof of Erdős's $B+C$ conjecture
We give a short proof of the fact that every set of natural numbers with positive upper Banach density contains the sum of two infinite sets. The approach simplifies earlier existing proofs.
The Density Finite Sums Theorem
For any set $A$ of natural numbers with positive upper Banach density and any $k\geq 1$, we show the existence of an infinite set $B\subset{\mathbb N}$ and a shift $t\geq0$ such that $A-t$ contains all sums of $m$ distinct elements from $B$ for all $m\in\{1,\ldots,k\}$. This can be viewed as a density analog of Hindman's finite sums theorem. Our proof reveals the natural relationships among infinite sumsets, the dynamics underpinning arithmetic progressions, and homogeneous spaces of nilpotent Lie groups.
Partition regularity of generalized Pythagorean pairs
We address partition regularity problems for homogeneous quadratic equations. A consequence of our main results is that, under natural conditions on the coefficients $a,b,c$, for any finite coloring of the positive integers, there exists a solution to $ax^2+by^2=cz^2$ where $x$ and $y$ have the same color (and similar results for $x,z$ and $y,z$). For certain choices of $(a,b,c)$, our result is conditional on an Elliott-type conjecture. Our proofs build on and extend previous arguments of the authors dealing with the Pythagorean equation. We make use of new uniformity properties of aperiodic multiplicative functions and concentration estimates for multiplicative functions along arbitrary binary quadratic forms.
Problems on infinite sumset configurations in the integers and beyond
In contrast to finite arithmetic configurations, relatively little is known about which infinite patterns can be found in every set of natural numbers with positive density. Building on recent advances showing infinite sumsets can be found, we explore numerous open problems and obstructions to finding other infinite configurations in every set of natural numbers with positive density.
Partition regularity of Pythagorean pairs
Published in Forum of Mathematics, Pi 13 (2025) e5 • View PublicationBIB
We address a core partition regularity problem in Ramsey theory by proving that every finite coloring of the positive integers contains monochromatic Pythagorean pairs, i.e., $x,y\in \mathbb{N}$ such that $x^2\pm y^2=z^2$ for some $z\in \mathbb{N}$. We also show that partitions generated by level sets of multiplicative functions taking finitely many values always contain Pythagorean triples. Our proofs combine known Gowers uniformity properties of aperiodic multiplicative functions with a novel and rather flexible approach based on concentration estimates of multiplicative functions.

We show that every set $A$ of natural numbers with positive upper density can be shifted to contain the restricted sumset $\{b_1 + b_2 : b_1, b_2\in B \text{ and } b_1 \neq b_2 \}$ for some infinite set $B \subset A$.
Infinite Sumsets in Sets with Positive Density
Published • View PublicationBIB
Motivated by questions asked by Erdos, we prove that any set $A\subset{\mathbb N}$ with positive upper density contains, for any $k\in{\mathbb N}$, a sumset $B_1+\cdots+B_k$, where $B_1,\dots,B_k\subset{\mathbb N}$ are infinite. Our proof uses ergodic theory and relies on structural results for measure preserving systems. Our techniques are new, even for the previously known case of $k=2$.

A combinatorial proof of a sumset conjecture of Furstenberg
Published in Combinatorica 43 2023, no 2, 299-328 • View PublicationBIB
We give a new proof of a sumset conjecture of Furstenberg that was first proved by Hochman and Shmerkin in 2012: if $\log r / \log s$ is irrational and $X$ and $Y$ are $\times r$- and $\times s$-invariant subsets of $[0,1]$, respectively, then $\dim_\text{H} (X+Y) = \min ( 1, \dim_\text{H} X + \dim_\text{H} Y)$. Our main result yields information on the size of the sumset $λX + ηY$ uniformly across a compact set of parameters at fixed scales. The proof is combinatorial and avoids the machinery of local entropy averages and CP-processes, relying instead on a quantitative, discrete Marstrand projection theorem and a subtree regularity theorem that may be of independent interest.

Multiple ergodic averages along functions from a Hardy field: convergence, recurrence and combinatorial applications
Published • View PublicationBIB
We obtain new results pertaining to convergence and recurrence of multiple ergodic averages along functions from a Hardy field. Among other things, we confirm some of the conjectures posed by Frantzikinakis in [Fra10; Fra16] and obtain combinatorial applications which contain, as rather special cases, several previously known (polynomial and non-polynomial) extensions of Szemeredi's theorem on arithmetic progressions [BL96; BLL08; FW09; Fra10; BMR17]. One of the novel features of our results, which is not present in previous work, is that they allow for a mixture of polynomials and non-polynomial functions. As an illustration, assume $f_i(t)=a_{i,1}t^{c_{i,1}}+\cdots+a_{i,d}t^{c_{i,d}}$ for $c_{i,j}>0$ and $a_{i,j}\in\mathbb{R}$. Then $\bullet$ for any measure preserving system $(X,\mathcal{B},μ,T)$ and $h_1,\dots,h_k\in L^\infty(X)$, the limit $$\lim_{N\to\infty}\frac{1}{N}\sum_{n=1}^N T^{[f_1(n)]}h_1\cdots T^{[f_k(n)]}h_k$$ exists in $L^2$; $\bullet$ for any $E\subset \mathbb{N}$ with $\overline{\mathrm{d}}(E)>0$ there are $a,n\in\mathbb{N}$ such that $\{a,\, a+[f_1(n)],\ldots,a+[f_k(n)]\}\subset E$. We also show that if $f_1,\dots,f_k$ belong to a Hardy field, have polynomial growth, and are such that no linear combination of them is a polynomial, then for any measure preserving system $(X,{\mathcal B},μ,T)$ and any $A\in{\mathcal B}$, $$\limsup_{N\to\infty}\frac{1}{N}\sum_{n=1}^Nμ\Big(A\cap T^{-[ f_1(n) ]}A\cap\ldots\cap T^{-[f_k(n)]}A\Big)\,\geq\,μ(A)^{k+1}.$$
On Rado conditions for nonlinear Diophantine equations
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics, Volume 94, May 2021, #103277 • View PublicationBIB
Building on previous work of Di Nasso and Luperi Baglini, we provide general necessary conditions for a Diophantine equation to be partition regular. These conditions are inspired by Rado's characterization of partition regular linear homogeneous equations. We conjecture that these conditions are also sufficient for partition regularity, at least for equations whose corresponding monovariate polynomial is linear. This would provide a natural generalization of Rado's theorem. We verify that such a conjecture hold for the equations $x^{2}-xy+ax+by+cz=0$ and $x^{2}-y^{2}+ax+by+cz=0$ for $a,b,c\in \mathbb{Z}$ such that $abc=0$ or $% a+b+c=0$. To deal with these equations, we establish new results concerning the partition regularity of polynomial configurations in $\mathbb{Z}$ such as $\left\{ x,x+y,xy+x+y\right\} $, building on the recent result on the partition regularity of $\left\{ x,x+y,xy\right\} $.

Optimal lower bounds for multiple recurrence

Let $(X, \mathcal{B},μ,T)$ be an ergodic measure preserving system, $A \in \mathcal{B}$ and $ε>0$. We study the largeness of sets of the form \begin{equation*} \begin{split} S = \left\{ n\in\mathbb{N}\colonμ(A\cap T^{-f_1(n)}A\cap T^{-f_2(n)}A\cap\ldots\cap T^{-f_k(n)}A)> μ(A)^{k+1} - ε\right\} \end{split} \end{equation*} for various families $\{f_1,\dots,f_k\}$ of sequences $f_i\colon \mathbb{N} \to \mathbb{N}$. For $k \leq 3$ and $f_{i}(n)=i f(n)$, we show that $S$ has positive density if $f(n)=q(p_n)$ where $q \in \mathbb{Z}[x]$ satisfies $q(1)$ or $q(-1) =0$ and $p_n$ denotes the $n$-th prime; or when $f$ is a certain Hardy field sequence. If $T^q$ is ergodic for some $q \in \mathbb{N}$, then for all $r \in \mathbb{Z}$, $S$ is syndetic if $f(n) = qn + r$. For $f_{i}(n)=a_{i}n$, where $a_{i}$ are distinct integers, we show that $S$ can be empty for $k\geq 4$, and for $k = 3$ we found an interesting relation between the largeness of $S$ and the abundance of solutions to certain linear equations in sparse sets of integers. We also provide some partial results when the $f_{i}$ are distinct polynomials.
A proof of a sumset conjecture of Erdős

In this paper we show that every set $A \subset \mathbb{N}$ with positive density contains $B+C$ for some pair $B,C$ of infinite subsets of $\mathbb{N}$, settling a conjecture of Erdős. The proof features two different decompositions of an arbitrary bounded sequence into a structured component and a pseudo-random component. Our methods are quite general, allowing us to prove a version of this conjecture for countable amenable groups.

Monochromatic sums and products in $\mathbb{N}$
Published • View PublicationBIB
An old question in Ramsey theory asks whether any finite coloring of the natural numbers admits a monochromatic pair $\{x+y,xy\}$. We answer this question affirmatively in a strong sense by exhibiting a large new class of non-linear patterns which can be found in a single cell of any finite partition of $\mathbb{N}$. Our proof involves a correspondence principle which transfers the problem into the language of topological dynamics. As a corollary of our main theorem we obtain partition regularity for new types of equations, such as $x^2-y^2=z$ and $x^2+2y^2-3z^2=w$.

Measure preserving actions of affine semigroups and {x+y,xy} patterns
Published • View PublicationBIB
Ergodic and combinatorial results obtained in [10] involved measure preserving actions of the affine group ${\mathcal A}_K$ of a countable field $K$. In this paper we develop a new approach based on ultrafilter limits which allows one to refine and extend the results obtained in [10] to a more general situation involving the measure preserving actions of the non-amenable affine semigroups of a large class of integral domains. (The results in [10] heavily depend on the amenability of the affine group of a field). Among other things, we obtain, as a corollary of an ultrafilter ergodic theorem, the following result: Let $K$ be a number field and let ${\mathcal O}_K$ be the ring of integers of $K$. For any finite partition $K=C_1\cup\cdots\cup C_r$ there exists $i\in\{1,\dots,r\}$ and many $x\in K$ and $y\in{\mathcal O}_K$ such that $\{x+y,xy\}\subset C_i$.

Large subsets of discrete hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{Z}^d$ contain arbitrarily many collinear points
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics, Volume 54, May 2016, Pages 163--176 • View PublicationBIB
In 1977 L.T. Ramsey showed that any sequence in $\mathbb{Z}^2$ with bounded gaps contains arbitrarily many collinear points. Thereafter, in 1980, C. Pomerance provided a density version of this result, relaxing the condition on the sequence from having bounded gaps to having gaps bounded on average. We give a higher dimensional generalization of these results. Our main theorem is the following. Theorem: Let $d\in\mathbb{N}$, let $f:\mathbb{Z}^d\to\mathbb{Z}^{d+1}$ be a Lipschitz map and let $A\subset\mathbb{Z}^d$ have positive upper Banach density. Then $f(A)$ contains arbitrarily many collinear points. Note that Pomerance's theorem corresponds to the special case $d=1$. In our proof, we transfer the problem from a discrete to a continuous setting, allowing us to take advantage of analytic and measure theoretic tools such as Rademacher's theorem.

New polynomial and multidimensional extensions of classical partition results
Published • View PublicationBIB
In the 1970s Deuber introduced the notion of $(m,p,c)$-sets in $\mathbb{N}$ and showed that these sets are partition regular and contain all linear partition regular configurations in $\mathbb{N}$. In this paper we obtain enhancements and extensions of classical results on $(m,p,c)$-sets in two directions. First, we show, with the help of ultrafilter techniques, that Deuber's results extend to polynomial configurations in abelian groups. In particular, we obtain new partition regular polynomial configurations in $\mathbb{Z}^d$. Second, we give two proofs of a generalization of Deuber's results to general commutative semigroups. We also obtain a polynomial version of the central sets theorem of Furstenberg, extend the theory of $(m,p,c)$-systems of Deuber, Hindman and Lefmann and generalize a classical theorem of Rado regarding partition regularity of linear systems of equations over $\mathbb{N}$ to commutative semigroups.
Derandomizing restricted isometries via the Legendre symbol
Published • View PublicationBIB
The restricted isometry property (RIP) is an important matrix condition in compressed sensing, but the best matrix constructions to date use randomness. This paper leverages pseudorandom properties of the Legendre symbol to reduce the number of random bits in an RIP matrix with Bernoulli entries. In this regard, the Legendre symbol is not special---our main result naturally generalizes to any small-bias sample space. We also conjecture that no random bits are necessary for our Legendre symbol--based construction.

Ergodic Theorem involving additive and multiplicative groups of a field and $\{x+y,xy\}$ patterns
Published • View PublicationBIB
We establish a "diagonal" ergodic theorem involving the additive and multiplicative groups of a countable field $K$ and, with the help of a new variant of Furstenberg's correspondence principle, prove that any "large" set in $K$ contains many configurations of the form $\{x+y,xy\}$. We also show that for any finite coloring of $K$ there are many $x,y\in K$ such that $x,x+y$ and $xy$ have the same color. Finally, by utilizing a finitistic version of our main ergodic theorem, we obtain combinatorial results pertaining to finite fields. In particular we obtain an alternative proof for a result obtained by Cilleruelo [11], showing that for any finite field $F$ and any subsets $E_1,E_2\subset F$ with $|E_1||E_2|>6|F|$, there exist $u,v\in F$ such that $u+v\in E_1$ and $uv\in E_2$.
