Power law behavior associated with a Fibonacci Lucas model and generalized statistical models
A Fibonacci-Lucas based statistical model and several other related models are studied. The canonical and grand canonical partition functions for these models are developed.Partition structure such as the distribution of sizes as in a cluster distribution is explored.Ensemble averaging over all partitions leads to a scale invariant power law behavior at a particular critical like point. The canonical ensemble of the Fibonacci-Lucas case involves the Gegenbauer polynomial. The model has a hyperbolic power law behavior, a feature linked to the golden mean ratio of two adjacent Fibonacci numbers and also the connection of Lucas numbers to the golden mean. The relation to other power law behavior, such as Zipf and Pareto laws, is mentioned. For the cases considered, the grand canonical ensemble involves the Gauss hypergeometric function F(a,b,c,z) with specific values for a,b,c. The general case has a variable power law behavior with tau exponent equal to1+c-a-b. An application with a=1/2, b=1, c=3 and thus tau=5/2 very closely approximates Bose-Einstein condensation. The zeta function zeta(3/2)=2.61 of the exact theory is replaced with 8/3 and zeta(5/2)= 1.34 with 4/3. At the condensation point the number of cycles of length falls as a scale invariant power law. The cycles, which arise from permutation symmetries associated with Bose-Einstein statistics, can be viewed as links in a complex network of connections between particles. This scale invariant power law parallels that seen in complex networks. The growth of the network is developed using recurrence properties of the model. Constraints imposed by the canonical ensemble and associates correlations lead to some number theoretic connections between Fibonacci and Lucas numbers as an incidental consequence of this approach.

We construct a statistical model of crystal melting to count BPS bound states of D0 and D2 branes on a single D6 brane wrapping an arbitrary toric Calabi-Yau threefold. The three-dimensional crystalline structure is determined by the quiver diagram and the brane tiling which characterize the low energy effective theory of D branes. The crystal is composed of atoms of different colors, each of which corresponds to a node of the quiver diagram, and the chemical bond is dictated by the arrows of the quiver diagram. BPS states are constructed by removing atoms from the crystal. This generalizes the earlier results on the BPS state counting to an arbitrary non-compact toric Calabi-Yau manifold. We point out that a proper understanding of the relation between the topological string theory and the crystal melting involves the wall crossing in the Donaldson-Thomas theory.
Cut ideals of K4-minor free graphs are generated by quadrics
Cut ideals are used in algebraic statistics to study statistical models defined by graphs. Intuitively, topological restrictions on the graphs should imply structural statements about the corresponding cut ideals. Several theorems and many computer calculations support that.
Sturmfels and Sullivant conjectured that the cut ideal is generated by quadrics if and only if the graph is free of K4-minors. Parts of the conjecture has been resolved by Brennan and Chen, and later by Nagel and Petrovic.
We prove the full conjecture by introducing a new type of toric fiber product theorem.
A tropical morphism related to the hyperplane arrangement of the complete bipartite graph
We undertake a combinatorial study of the piecewise linear map g : R^{2m+2n} --> R^{mn} which assigns to the four vectors a, A in R^m and b, B in R^n the m by n matrix given by g_{ij} = min (a_i + b_j, A_i+B_j). This map arises naturally in Pachter and Sturmfels's work on the tropical geometry of statistical models. The image of g has been a subject of recent interest; it is the positive part of the tropical algebraic variety which parameterizes n-tuples of points on a tropical line in m-space.
The domains of linearity of g are the regions of the real hyperplane arrangement A_{m,n}, corresponding to the complete bipartite graph K_{m,n}. We explain how the images of (some of) the regions provide two polyhedral subdivisions of the image of g, one of which is a refinement of the other. The finer subdivision is particularly nice enumeratively: it has 2 {m \choose 2} {n \choose 2} r_{m-2,n-2} maximum-dimensional cells, where r_{m-2,n-2} is the number of regions of the arrangement A_{m-2,n-2}.

Uniform spanning trees are a statistical model obtained by taking the set of all spanning trees on a given graph (such as a portion of a cubic lattice in d dimensions), with equal probability for each distinct tree. Some properties of such trees can be obtained in terms of the Laplacian matrix on the graph, by using Grassmann integrals. We use this to obtain exact exponents that bound those for the power-law decay of the probability that k distinct branches of the tree pass close to each of two distinct points, as the size of the lattice tends to infinity.

We present applications of rectangular matrix models to various combinatorial problems, among which the enumeration of face-bicolored graphs with prescribed vertex degrees, and vertex-tricolored triangulations. We also mention possible applications to Interaction-Round-a-Face and hard-particle statistical models defined on random lattices.
