Cut-norm and entropy minimization over weak* limits
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, series B, 137 (2019), pages 232-263 • View PublicationBIB
We prove that the accumulation points of a sequence of graphs $G_1,G_2,G_3,\ldots$ with respect to the cut-distance are exactly the weak$^*$ limit points of subsequences of the adjacency matrices (when all possible orders of the vertices are considered) that minimize the entropy over all weak$^*$ limit points of the corresponding subsequence. In fact, the entropy can be replaced by any map $W\mapsto \int\int f(W(x,y))$, where $f$ is a continuous and strictly concave function. Our proofs are elementary, and do not use the regularity lemma.

Limits of random tree-like discrete structures
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study a model of random $\mathcal{R}$-enriched trees that is based on weights on the $\mathcal{R}$-structures and allows for a unified treatment of a large family of random discrete structures. We establish distributional limits describing local convergence around fixed and random points in this general context, limit theorems for component sizes when $\mathcal{R}$ is a composite class, and a Gromov--Hausdorff scaling limit of random metric spaces patched together from independently drawn metrics on the $\mathcal{R}$-structures. Our main applications treat a selection of examples encompassed by this model. We consider random outerplanar maps sampled according to arbitrary weights assigned to their inner faces, and classify in complete generality distributional limits for both the asymptotic local behaviour near the root-edge and near a uniformly at random drawn vertex. We consider random connected graphs drawn according to weights assigned to their blocks and establish a Benjamini--Schramm limit. We also apply our framework to recover in a probabilistic way a central limit theorem for the size of the largest $2$-connected component in random graphs from planar-like classes. We prove Benjamini--Schramm convergence of random $k$-dimensional trees and establish both scaling limits and local weak limits for random planar maps drawn according to Boltzmann-weights assigned to their $2$-connected components.

On local weak limit and subgraph counts for sparse random graphs
Published in J. Appl. Probab., 59 (2022), 755-776 • View PublicationBIB
We use an inequality of Sidorenko to show a general relation between local and global subgraph counts and degree moments for locally weakly convergent sequences of sparse random graphs. This yields an optimal criterion to check when the asymptotic behaviour of graph statistics such as the clustering coefficient and assortativity is determined by the local weak limit. As an application we obtain new facts for several common models of sparse random intersection graphs where the local weak limit, as we see here, is a simple random clique tree corresponding to a certain two-type Galton-Watson branching process.

Random enriched trees with applications to random graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We establish limit theorems that describe the asymptotic local and global geometric behaviour of random enriched trees considered up to symmetry. We apply these general results to random unlabelled weighted rooted graphs and uniform random unlabelled $k$-trees that are rooted at a $k$-clique of distinguishable vertices. For both models we establish a Gromov--Hausdorff scaling limit, a Benjamini--Schramm limit, and a local weak limit that describes the asymptotic shape near the fixed root.

Decay of Correlations for the Hardcore Model on the $d$-regular Random Graph
Published • View PublicationBIB
A key insight from statistical physics about spin systems on random graphs is the central role played by Gibbs measures on trees. We determine the local weak limit of the hardcore model on random regular graphs asymptotically until just below its condensation threshold, showing that it converges in probability locally in a strong sense to the free boundary condition Gibbs measure on the tree. As a consequence we show that the reconstruction threshold on the random graph, indicative of the onset of point to set spatial correlations, is equal to the reconstruction threshold on the $d$-regular tree for which we determine precise asymptotics. We expect that our methods will generalize to a wide range of spin systems for which the second moment method holds.

The densest subgraph problem in sparse random graphs
Published in Annals of Applied Probability 2016, Vol. 26, No. 1, 305-327 • View PublicationBIB
We determine the asymptotic behavior of the maximum subgraph density of large random graphs with a prescribed degree sequence. The result applies in particular to the Erdős-Rényi model, where it settles a conjecture of Hajek [IEEE Trans. Inform. Theory 36 (1990) 1398-1414]. Our proof consists in extending the notion of balanced loads from finite graphs to their local weak limits, using unimodularity. This is a new illustration of the objective method described by Aldous and Steele [In Probability on Discrete Structures (2004) 1-72 Springer].

Semi-classical measures on Quantum Graphs and the Gauss map of the determinant manifold
In this paper, I describe the weak limits of the measures associated to the eigenfunctions of the Laplacian on a Quantum graph for a generic metric in terms of the Gauss map of the determinant manifold. I describe also all the limits with minimal support (the "scars").

On Weak Limits and Unimodular Measures
In this thesis, the main objects of study are probability measures on the isomorphism classes of countable, connected rooted graphs. An important class of such measures is formed by unimodular measures, which satisfy a certain equation, sometimes referred to as the intrinsic mass transport principle. The so-called law of a finite graph is an example of a unimodular measure. We say that a measure is sustained by a countable graph if the set of rooted connected components of the graph has full measure. We demonstrate several new results involving sustained unimodular measures, and provide thorough arguments for known ones. In particular, we give a criterion for unimodularity on connected graphs, deduce that connected graphs sustain at most one unimodular measure, and prove that unimodular measures sustained by disconnected graphs are convex combinations. Furthermore, we discuss weak limits of laws of finite graphs, and construct counterexamples to seemingly reasonable conjectures.

The local weak limit of the minimum spanning tree of the complete graph
Assign i.i.d. standard exponential edge weights to the edges of the complete graph K_n, and let M_n be the resulting minimum spanning tree. We show that M_n converges in the local weak sense (also called Aldous-Steele or Benjamini-Schramm convergence), to a random infinite tree M. The tree M may be viewed as the component containing the root in the wired minimum spanning forest of the Poisson-weighted infinite tree (PWIT). We describe a Markov process construction of M starting from the invasion percolation cluster on the PWIT. We then show that M has cubic volume growth, up to lower order fluctuations for which we provide explicit bounds. Our volume growth estimates confirm recent predictions from the physics literature, and contrast with the behaviour of invasion percolation on the PWIT and on regular trees, which exhibit quadratic volume growth.
Convergence of multivariate belief propagation, with applications to cuckoo hashing and load balancing
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper is motivated by two applications, namely i) generalizations of cuckoo hashing, a computationally simple approach to assigning keys to objects, and ii) load balancing in content distribution networks, where one is interested in determining the impact of content replication on performance. These two problems admit a common abstraction: in both scenarios, performance is characterized by the maximum weight of a generalization of a matching in a bipartite graph, featuring node and edge capacities. Our main result is a law of large numbers characterizing the asymptotic maximum weight matching in the limit of large bipartite random graphs, when the graphs admit a local weak limit that is a tree. This result specializes to the two application scenarios, yielding new results in both contexts. In contrast with previous results, the key novelty is the ability to handle edge capacities with arbitrary integer values. An analysis of belief propagation algorithms (BP) with multivariate belief vectors underlies the proof. In particular, we show convergence of the corresponding BP by exploiting monotonicity of the belief vectors with respect to the so-called upshifted likelihood ratio stochastic order. This auxiliary result can be of independent interest, providing a new set of structural conditions which ensure convergence of BP.

Graphings and Unimodularity
Published in The Waterloo Mathematics Review, Volume 1, Issue 3, 2011, pp. 17-32 • Search Publication
We extend the concept of the law of a finite graph to graphings, which are, in general, infinite graphs whose vertices are equipped with the structure of a probability space. By doing this, we obtain a vast array of new unimodular measures. Furthermore, we work out in full detail a proof of a known result, which states that weak limits preserve unimodularity.

Weak Convergence of Laws of Finite Graphs
The law of a finite graph is a probability measure induced by the orbits of the graph under its automorphism group. Every law satisfies the intrinsic mass transport principle, which is also known as unimodularity. We discuss the convergence of sequences of laws of finite graphs. Of particular importance is a conjecture proposed by Aldous and Lyons that claims every unimodular measure is a limit of a sequence of laws. Aside from this open problem, other directions of research are also mentioned. We work out in detail a number of results and examples, some of which are new, and others that have been previously stated without proofs. These results include a new characterization of laws of finite connected graphs, a description of the topological space of paths, and a proof that the compact space of weak limits of laws is convex.

The cavity method for counting spanning subgraphs subject to local constraints
Using the theory of negative association for measures and the notion of random weak limits of sparse graphs, we establish the validity of the cavity method for counting spanning subgraphs subject to local constraints in asymptotically tree-like graphs. Specifically, the corresponding free entropy density is shown to converge along any sequence of graphs whose random weak limit is a tree, and the limit is directly expressed in terms of the unique solution to a limiting cavity equation. On a Galton-Watson tree, the latter simplifies into a recursive distributional equation which can be solved explicitely. As an illustration, we provide an explicit-limit formula for the $b-$matching number of an Erdős-Rényi random graph with fixed average degree and diverging size, for any $b\in\mathbb N$.

We determine the weak limit of the distribution of the random variables "height" and "range" on the set of p-watermelons without wall restriction as the number of steps tends to infinity. Additionally, we provide asymptotics for the moments of the random variable "height".

The height of watermelons with wall
Published in J.Phys.A: Math.Theor. 45 095003 (2012) • View PublicationBIB
We derive asymptotics for the moments as well as the weak limit of the height distribution of watermelons with p branches with wall. This generalises a famous result of de Bruijn, Knuth and Rice on the average height of planted plane trees, and results by Fulmek and Katori et al. on the expected value, respectively the higher moments, of the height distribution of watermelons with two branches. The asymptotics for the moments depend on the analytic behaviour of certain multidimensional Dirichlet series. In order to obtain this information we prove a reciprocity relation satisfied by the derivatives of one of Jacobi's theta functions, which generalises the well known reciprocity law for Jacobi's theta functions.

Weak convergence of finite graphs, integrated density of states and a Cheeger type inequality
Published • View PublicationBIB
In \cite{Elek} we proved that the limit of a weakly convergent sequence of finite graphs can be viewed as a graphing or a continuous field of infinite graphs. Thus one can associate a type $II_1$-von Neumann algebra to such graph sequences. We show that in this case the integrated density of states exists that is the weak limit of the spectra of the graph Laplacians of the finite graphs is the KNS-spectral measure of the graph Laplacian of the limit graphing. Using this limit technique we prove a Cheeger type inequality for finite graphs.
