Krausz dimension and its generalizations in special graph classes
Published • View Publication • BIB
A {\it krausz $(k,m)$-partition} of a graph $G$ is the partition of $G$ into cliques, such that any vertex belongs to at most $k$ cliques and any two cliques have at most $m$ vertices in common. The {\it $m$-krausz} dimension $kdim_m(G)$ of the graph $G$ is the minimum number $k$ such that $G$ has a krausz $(k,m)$-partition. 1-krausz dimension is known and studied krausz dimension of graph $kdim(G)$. In this paper we prove, that the problem $"kdim(G)\leq 3"$ is polynomially solvable for chordal graphs, thus partially solving the problem of P. Hlineny and J. Kratochvil. We show, that the problem of finding $m$-krausz dimension is NP-hard for every $m\geq 1$, even if restricted to (1,2)-colorable graphs, but the problem $"kdim_m(G)\leq k"$ is polynomially solvable for $(\infty,1)$-polar graphs for every fixed $k,m\geq 1$.

Classification of nonorientable regular embeddings of Hamming graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
By a regular embedding of a graph K in a surface we mean a 2-cell embedding of K in a compact connected surface such that the automorphism group acts regularly on flags. In this paper, we classify the nonorientable regular embeddings of the Hamming graph H(d,n). We show that there exists such an embedding if and only if n=2 and d=2, or n=3 or 4 and d>0, or n=6 and d=1 or 2. We also give constructions and descriptions of these embeddings.

Arrow ribbon graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We introduce an additional structure on ribbon graphs, arrow structure. We extend the Bollobás-Riordan polynomial to ribbon graph with this structure. The extended polynomial satisfies the contraction-deletion relations and naturally behaves with respect to the partial duality of ribbon graphs. We construct an arrow ribbon graph from a virtual link whose extended Bollobás-Riordan polynomial specializes to the arrow polynomial of the virtual link recently introduced by H.Dye and L.Kauffman. This result generalizes the classical Thistlethwaite theorem to the arrow polynomial of virtual links.

The set of autotopisms of partial Latin squares
Published in Discrete Mathematics 313, No. 11 (2013), 1150-1161 • View Publication • BIB
Symmetries of a partial Latin square are determined by its autotopism group. Analogously to the case of Latin squares, given an isotopism $Θ$, the cardinality of the set $\mathcal{PLS}_Θ$ of partial Latin squares which are invariant under $Θ$ only depends on the conjugacy class of the latter, or, equivalently, on its cycle structure. In the current paper, the cycle structures of the set of autotopisms of partial Latin squares are characterized and several related properties studied. It is also seen that the cycle structure of $Θ$ determines the possible sizes of the elements of $\mathcal{PLS}_Θ$ and the number of those partial Latin squares of this set with a given size. Finally, it is generalized the traditional notion of partial Latin square completable to a Latin square.

Discrete Morse theory and the consecutive pattern poset
Published • View Publication • BIB
We use discrete Morse theory to provide another proof of Bernini, Ferrari, and Steingrimson's formula for the Mobius function of the consecutive pattern poset. In addition, we are able to determine the homotopy type of this poset. Earlier, Bjorner determined the Mobius function and homotopy type of factor order and the results are remarkably similar to those in the pattern case. In his thesis, Willenbring used discrete Morse theory to give an illuminating proof of Bjorner's result. Since our proof parallels Willenbring's, we also consider the relationship between the two posets.

The Expected Order of Saturated RNA Secondary Structures
Published • View Publication • BIB
We show the expected order of RNA saturated secondary structures of size $n$ is $\log_4n(1+O(\frac{\log_2n}{n}))$, if we select the saturated secondary structure uniformly at random. Furthermore, the order of saturated secondary structures is sharply concentrated around its mean. As a consequence saturated structures and structures in the traditional model behave the same with respect to the expected order. Thus we may conclude that the traditional model has already drawn the right picture and conclusions inferred from it with respect to the order (the overall shape) of a structure remain valid even if enforcing saturation (at least in expectation).

Free Cyclic Submodules and Non-Unimodular Vectors
Given a finite associative ring with unity, $R$, and its two-dimensional left module, $^{2}R$, the following two problems are addressed: 1) the existence of vectors of $^{2}R$ that do not belong to any free cyclic submodule (FCS) generated by a unimodular vector and 2) conditions under which such (non-unimodular) vectors generate FCSs. The main result is that for a non-unimodular vector to generate an FCS of $^{2}R$, $R$ must have at least two maximal right ideals of which at least one is non-principal.

An Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem in general linear groups
Let $S_n$ be the symmetric group on $n$ points. Deza and Frankl [M. Deza and P. Frankl, On the maximum number of permutations with given maximal or minimal distance, J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 22 (1977) 352--360] proved that if ${\cal F}$ is an intersecting set in $S_n$ then $|{\cal F}|\leq(n-1)!$. In this paper we consider the $q$-analogue version of this result. Let $\mathbb{F}_q^n$ be the $n$-dimensional row vector space over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ and $GL_n(\mathbb{F}_q)$ the general linear group of degree $n$. A set ${\cal F}_q\subseteq GL_n(\mathbb{F}_q)$ is {\it intersecting} if for any $T,S\in{\cal F}_q$ there exists a non-zero vector $α\in \mathbb{F}_q^n$ such that $αT=αS$. Let ${\cal F}_q$ be an intersecting set in $GL_n(\mathbb{F}_q)$. We show that $|{\cal F}_q|\leq q^{(n-1)n/2}\prod_{i=1}^{n-1}(q^i-1)$.

Geometric analysis aspects of infinite semiplanar graphs with nonnegative curvature
Published in J. Reine Angew. Math. 700 (2015), 1-36 • View Publication • BIB
In the present paper, we apply Alexandrov geometry methods to study geometric analysis aspects of infinite semiplanar graphs with nonnegative combinatorial curvature in the sense of Higuchi. We obtain the metric classification of these graphs and construct the graphs embedded in the projective plane minus one point. Moreover, we show the volume doubling property and the Poincaré inequality on such graphs. The quadratic volume growth of these graphs implies the parabolicity. In addition, we prove the polynomial growth harmonic function theorem analogous to the case of Riemannian manifolds.

The Reversal Ratio of a Poset
Published in Order (2015) 32:43--52 • View Publication • BIB
Felsner and Reuter introduced the linear extension diameter of a partially ordered set $\mathbf{P}$, denoted $\mbox{led}(\mathbf{P})$, as the maximum distance between two linear extensions of $\mathbf{P}$, where distance is defined to be the number of incomparable pairs appearing in opposite orders (reversed) in the linear extensions. In this paper, we introduce the reversal ratio $RR(\mathbf{P})$ of $\mathbf{P}$ as the ratio of the linear extension diameter to the number of (unordered) incomparable pairs. We use probabilistic techniques to provide a family of posets $\mathbf{P}_k$ on at most $k\log k$ elements for which the reversal ratio $RR(\mathbf{P}_k)\leq C/\log k$, where $C$ is a constant. We also examine the questions of bounding the reversal ratio in terms of order dimension and width.

The disentangling number for phylogenetic mixtures

We provide a logarithmic upper bound for the disentangling number on unordered lists of leaf labeled trees. This results is useful for analyzing phylogenetic mixture models. The proof depends on interpreting multisets of trees as high dimensional contingency tables.

Monochromatic 4-term arithmetic progressions in 2-colorings of $\mathbb Z_n$
Published • View Publication • BIB
This paper is motivated by a recent result of Wolf \cite{wolf} on the minimum number of monochromatic 4-term arithmetic progressions(4-APs, for short) in $\Z_p$, where $p$ is a prime number. Wolf proved that there is a 2-coloring of $\Z_p$ with 0.000386% fewer monochromatic 4-APs than random 2-colorings; the proof is probabilistic and non-constructive. In this paper, we present an explicit and simple construction of a 2-coloring with 9.3% fewer monochromatic 4-APs than random 2-colorings. This problem leads us to consider the minimum number of monochromatic 4-APs in $\Z_n$ for general $n$. We obtain both lower bound and upper bound on the minimum number of monochromatic 4-APs in all 2-colorings of $\Z_n$. Wolf proved that any 2-coloring of $\Z_p$ has at least $(1/16+o(1))p^2$ monochromatic 4-APs. We improve this lower bound into $(7/96+o(1))p^2$. Our results on $\Z_n$ naturally apply to the similar problem on $[n]$ (i.e., $\{1,2,..., n\}$). In 2008, Parillo, Robertson, and Saracino \cite{prs} constructed a 2-coloring of $[n]$ with 14.6% fewer monochromatic 3-APs than random 2-colorings. In 2010, Butler, Costello, and Graham \cite{BCG} extended their methods and used an extensive computer search to construct a 2-coloring of $[n]$ with 17.35% fewer monochromatic 4-APs (and 26.8% fewer monochromatic 5-APs) than random 2-colorings. Our construction gives a 2-coloring of $[n]$ with 33.33% fewer monochromatic 4-APs (and 57.89% fewer monochromatic 5-APs) than random 2-colorings.

Sets with High Volume and Low Perimeter
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we consider a certain variation of the "isoperimetric problem" adopted for subsets of nonnegative integers. More specifically, we explore the sequence P(n) as described in OEIS A186053. We provide the first exact formulas for P(n) including multiple recursive relations involving auxiliary functions as well as concise and satisfying representations and quasi-explicit formulas. We also discuss some of the intricate fractal-like symmetry of the sequence as well as the development of algorithms for computing P(n). We conclude with open questions for further research.

Analysis of casino shelf shuffling machines
Published in Annals of Applied Probability 2013, Vol. 23, No. 4, 1692-1720 • View Publication • BIB
Many casinos routinely use mechanical card shuffling machines. We were asked to evaluate a new product, a shelf shuffler. This leads to new probability, new combinatorics and to some practical advice which was adopted by the manufacturer. The interplay between theory, computing, and real-world application is developed.

A note on the minimum skew rank of powers of paths
The real minimum skew rank of a simple graph G is the smallest possible rank among all real skew symmetric matrices, whose (i,j)-entry (for i not equal to j) is nonzero whenever {i, j} is an edge in G and is zero otherwise. In this paper we study the problem of real minimum skew rank of powers and strict powers of paths.

Depth and minimal number of generators of square free monomial ideals
Let $I$ be an ideal of a polynomial algebra $S$ over a field generated by square free monomials of degree $\geq d$. If $I$ contains more monomials of degree $d$ than $(n-d)/(n-d+1)$ of the total number of square free monomials of $S$ of degree $d+1$ then $\depth_SI\leq d$, in particular the Stanley's Conjecture holds in this case.

Large cliques in graphs with high chromatic number
We study graphs whose chromatic number is close to the order of the graph (the number of vertices). Both when the chromatic number is a constant multiple of the order and when the difference of the chromatic number and the order is a small fixed number, large cliques are forced. We study the latter situation, and we give quantitative results how large the clique number of these graphs have to be. Some related questions are discussed and conjectures are posed. Please note that the results of this article were significantly generalized. Therefore this paper will never be published in a journal. See instead arXiv:1103.3917 [math.CO] for the more general results.

An analogue of Ryser's Theorem for partial Sudoku squares
In 1956 Ryser gave a necessary and sufficient condition for a partial latin rectangle to be completable to a latin square. In 1990 Hilton and Johnson showed that Ryser's condition could be reformulated in terms of Hall's Condition for partial latin squares. Thus Ryser's Theorem can be interpreted as saying that any partial latin rectangle $R$ can be completed if and only if $R$ satisfies Hall's Condition for partial latin squares. We define Hall's Condition for partial Sudoku squares and show that Hall's Condition for partial Sudoku squares gives a criterion for the completion of partial Sudoku rectangles that is both necessary and sufficient. In the particular case where $n=pq$, $p|r$, $q|s$, the result is especially simple, as we show that any $r \times s$ partial $(p,q)$-Sudoku rectangle can be completed (no further condition being necessary).
