Partial Alternating Sign Matrix Bijections and Dynamics
Published • View PublicationBIB
We investigate analogues of alternating sign matrices, called partial alternating sign matrices. We prove bijections between these matrices and several other combinatorial objects. We use an analogue of Wieland's gyration on fully-packed loops, which we relate to the study of toggles and order ideals. Finally, we show that rowmotion on order ideals of a certain poset and gyration on partial fully-packed loop configurations are in equivariant bijection.

Diametric problem for permutations with the Ulam metric (optimal anticodes)
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the diametric problem (i.e., optimal anticodes) in the space of permutations under the Ulam distance. That is, let $S_n$ denote the set of permutations on $n$ symbols, and for each $σ, τ\in S_n$, define their Ulam distance as the number of distinct symbols that must be deleted from each until they are equal. We obtain a near-optimal upper bound on the size of the intersection of two balls in this space, and as a corollary, we prove that a set of diameter at most $k$ has size at most $2^{k + C k^{2/3}} n! / (n-k)!$, compared to the best known construction of size $n!/(n-k)!$. We also prove that sets of diameter $1$ have at most $n$ elements.

Note on the spectra of Steiner distance hypermatrices
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Steiner distance of a set of vertices in a graph is the fewest number of edges in any connected subgraph containing those vertices. The order-$k$ Steiner distance hypermatrix of an $n$-vertex graph is the $n \times \cdots \times n$ ($k$ terms) array indexed by vertices, whose entries are the Steiner distances of their corresponding indices. In the case of $k=2$, this reduces to the classical distance matrix of a graph. Graham and Pollak showed in 1971 that the determinant of the distance matrix of a tree only depends on its number $n$ of vertices. Here, we show that the hyperdeterminant of the Steiner distance hypermatrix of a tree vanishes if and only if (a) $n \geq 3$ and $k$ is odd, (b) $n=1$, or (c) $n=2$ and $k \equiv 1 \pmod{6}$. Two proofs are presented of the $n=2$ case -- the other situations were handled previously -- and we use the argument further to show that the distance spectral radius for $n=2$ is equal to $2^{k-1}-1$. Some related open questions are also discussed.
Minimum acyclic number and maximum dichromatic number of oriented triangle-free graphs of a given order
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $D$ be a digraph. Its acyclic number $\vecα(D)$ is the maximum order of an acyclic induced subdigraph and its dichromatic number $\vecχ(D)$ is the least integer $k$ such that $V(D)$ can be partitioned into $k$ subsets inducing acyclic subdigraphs. We study ${\vec a}(n)$ and $\vec t(n)$ which are the minimum of $\vecα(D)$ and the maximum of $\vecχ(D)$, respectively, over all oriented triangle-free graphs of order $n$. For every $ε>0$ and $n$ large enough, we show $(1/\sqrt{2} - ε) \sqrt{n\log n} \leq \vec{a}(n) \leq \frac{107}{8} \sqrt n \log n$ and $\frac{8}{107} \sqrt n/\log n \leq \vec{t}(n) \leq (\sqrt 2 + ε) \sqrt{n/\log n}$. We also construct an oriented triangle-free graph on 25 vertices with dichromatic number~3, and show that every oriented triangle-free graph of order at most 17 has dichromatic number at most 2.

Saturated Partial Embeddings of Planar Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this work, we study how far one can deviate from optimal behavior when embedding a planar graph. For a planar graph $G$, we say that a plane subgraph $H\subseteq G$ is a \textit{plane-saturated subgraph} if adding any edge (possibly with new vertices) to $H$ would either violate planarity or make the resulting graph no longer a subgraph of $G$. For a planar graph $G$, we define the \textit{plane-saturation ratio}, $\psr(G)$, as the minimum value of $\frac{e(H)}{e(G)}$ for a plane-saturated subgraph $H$ of $G$ and investigate how small $\psr(G)$ can be. While there exist planar graphs where $\psr(G)$ is arbitrarily close to $0$, we show that for all twin-free planar graphs, $\psr(G)>1/16$, and that there exist twin-free planar graphs where $\psr(G)$ is arbitrarily close to $1/16$. In fact, we study a broader category of planar graphs, focusing on classes characterized by a bounded number of degree $1$ and degree $2$ twin vertices. We offer solutions for some instances of bounds while positing conjectures for the remaining ones.

Arctic curves of the T-system with Slanted Initial Data
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the T-system of type $A_\infty$, also known as the octahedron recurrence/equation, viewed as a 2+1-dimensional discrete evolution equation. Generalizing the study of [P. Di Francesco and R. Soto-Garrido. Arctic curves of the octahedron equation. J. Phys. A, 47(28):285204, 34, 2014], we consider initial data along parallel ``slanted" planes perpendicular to an arbitrary admissible direction $(r,s,t)\in {\mathbb Z}_+^3$. The solution of the T-system is interpreted as the partition function of a dimer model on some suitable ``pinecone" graph introduced in [M. Bousquet-Mélou, J. Propp, and J. West. Perfect matchings for the three-term Gale-Robinson sequences. Electron. J. Combin., 16(1):Research Paper 125, 37, 2009]. The T-system formulation and some exact solutions in uniform or periodic cases allow us to explore the thermodynamic limit of the corresponding dimer models and to derive exact arctic curves separating the various phases of the system.

Balls in groups: volume, structure and growth
We give sharp bounds in Breuillard, Green and Tao's finitary version of Gromov's theorem on groups with polynomial growth. Precisely, we show that for every non-negative integer d there exists $c=c(d)>0$ such that if $G$ is a group with finite symmetric generating set $S$ containing the identity and $|S^n|\le cn^{d+1}|S|$ for some positive integer $n$ then there exist normal subgroups $H\leΓ\le G$ such that $H\subseteq S^n$, such that $Γ/H$ is $d$-nilpotent (i.e. has a central series of length $d$ with cyclic factors), and such that $[G:Γ]\le g(d)$, where $g(d)$ denotes the maximum order of a finite subgroup of $GL_d(\mathbb{Z})$. The bounds on both the nilpotence and index are sharp; the previous best bounds were $O(d)$ on the nilpotence, and an ineffective function of $d$ on the index. In fact, we obtain this as a small part of a much more detailed fine-scale description of the structure of $G$. These results have a wide range of applications in various aspects of the theory of vertex-transitive graphs: percolation theory, random walks, structure of finite groups, scaling limits of finite vertex-transitive graphs.... We obtain some of these applications in the present paper, and treat others in companion papers. Some are due to or joint with other authors.

Interpolation Polynomials, Binomial Coefficients, and Symmetric Function Inequalities
Interpolation polynomials were introduced by Knop--Sahi in type $A$, and Okounkov in type $BC$. They are inhomogeneous polynomials whose top terms are Jack and Macdonald polynomials. Thus the expansion coefficients for the product of two interpolation polynomials, known as Littlewood--Richardson coefficients, generalize the corresponding coefficients for Jack/Macdonald polynomials. Special values of interpolation polynomials, known as binomial coefficients, arise in the binomial type expansions of Jack/Macdonald polynomials and Koornwinder polynomials. We prove a number of results for interpolation polynomials and the associated coefficients. These include positivity and monotonicity results for binomial coefficients, partial positivity results for Littlewood--Richardson coefficients, and weighted sum formulas for both kinds of coefficients. As a special case of our results we obtain a new symmetric function inequality, which establishes a ``duality'' between Jack expansion positivity for symmetric functions, and the containment order on partitions, with respect to the shifted basis $Ω_λ({\bf1}+x;τ)$, where ${\bf1} =(1,\ldots,1)$ and $Ω_λ(x;τ)=P_λ(x;τ)/P_λ({\bf1};τ)$ is the normalized Jack polynomial. Our inequality can be seen as an analog of the inequalities of Cuttler--Greene--Skandera+Sra and Khare--Tao, which establish similar dualities between evaluation positivity on the positive orthant, and the dominance and weak dominance orders on partitions, with respect to the normalized Schur basis $Ω_λ(x)=s_λ(x)/s_λ({\bf1})$ and its shifted version $Ω_λ({\bf1}+x)$, respectively. In contrast to our result, the Jack versions of the two latter inequalities, although expected to hold, have not yet been proved.

A Woven Klein Quartic
We describe a new method of weaving a model of the Klein quartic, a highly symmetric, but abstract genus-3 surface akin to a platonic polyhedron, with negatively-curved geometry. The Klein quartic cannot be realized in its fully symmetric form in three-dimensional space, but this model exhibits the most rigid symmetry that is possible. With remarkably little time and material you can have a Klein quartic of your own!

Entropy of cluster DT transformations and the finite-tame-wild trichotomy of acyclic quivers
The cluster algebra associated with an acyclic quiver has a special mutation loop $τ$, called the cluster Donaldson--Thomas (DT) transformation, related to the Auslander--Reiten translation. In this paper, we characterize the finite-tame-wild trichotomy for acyclic quivers by the sign stability of $τ$ introduced in [IK21] and its cluster stretch factor. As an application, we compute several kinds of entropies of $τ$ and other mutation loops. In particular, we show that the algebraic and categorical entropies of $τ$ are commonly given by the logarithm of the spectral radius of the Coxeter matrix associated with the quiver, and that any mutation loop of finite or tame acyclic quivers have zero algebraic entropy.
On a mod $3$ property of $\ell $-tuples of pairwise commuting permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $S_n$ denote the symmetric group of permutations acting on $n$ elements. We investigate the double sequence $\{N_{\ell}(n)\}$ counting the number of $\ell$ tuples of elements of the symmetric group $S_n$, where the components commute, normalized by the order of $S_n$. Our focus lies on exploring log-concavity with respect to $n$: $$ N_{\ell}(n)^2 - N_{\ell}(n-1) \,\, N_{\ell}(n+1) \geq 0.$$ We establish that this depends on $n \pmod{3}$ for sufficiently large $\ell$. These numbers are studied by Bryan and Fulman as the $n$th orbifold characteristics, generalizing work of Macdonald and Hirzebruch--Hofer concerning the ordinary and string-theoretic Euler characteristics of symmetric products. Notably, $N_2(n)$ represents the partition numbers $p(n)$, while $N_{3}(n)$ represents the number of non-equivalent $n$-sheeted coverings of a torus studied by Liskovets and Medynkh. The numbers also appear in algebra since $ \vert S_n \vert \,\, N_{\ell}(n) = \left\vert Hom \left( \mathbb{Z}^{\ell},S_n\right) \right\vert $.

Digraphs, pro-$p$ groups and Massey products in Galois cohomology
Let $p$ be a prime. We characterize the oriented right-angled Artin pro-$p$ groups whose $\mathbb{F}_p$-cohomology algebra yields no essential $n$-fold Massey products for every $n>2$, in terms of the associated digraph. Moreover, we show that the $\mathbb{F}_p$-cohomology algebra of such oriented right-angled Artin pro-$p$ groups is isomorphic to the exterior Stanley-Reisner $\mathbb{F}_p$-algebra associated to the same digraph. This work also aims at providing a concrete and group-theoretic introduction to the study of Massey products in Galois cohomology for non-specialists, especially graduate students working in profinite group theory.

Confluent Vandermonde matrix and related topics

In this note, we explore the connections between the confluent Vandermonde matrix over an arbitrary field and several mathematical topics, including interpolation polynomials, Hasse derivatives, LU factorization, companion matrices and their Jordan forms, and the partial fraction decomposition. Using a unified approach based on polynomial evaluations and derivative computations at selected points, we provide accessible proofs that not only clarify key results but also offer insights for both experienced researchers and those new to the subject.

Some results on total weight choosability
Published • View PublicationBIB
A graph $G=(V,E)$ is called $(k,k')$-choosable if for any total list assignment $L$ which assigns to each vertex $v$ a set $L(v)$ of $k$ real numbers, and assigns to each edge $e$ a set $L(e)$ of $k'$ real numbers, there is a mapping $f:V\cup E\rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ such that $f(y)\in L(y)$ for any $y\in V\cup E$ and for any two adjacent vertices $v, v'$, $\sum_{e\in E(v)}f(e)+f(v)\neq \sum_{e\in E(v')}f(e)+f(v')$, where $E(x)$ denotes the set of incident edges of a vertex $x\in V(G)$. In this paper, we characterize a sufficient condition on $(1,2)$-choosable of graphs. We show that every connected $(n,m)$-graph is both $(2,2)$-choosable and $(1,3)$-choosable if $m=n$ or $n+1$, where $(n,m)$-graph denotes the graph with $n$ vertices and $m$ edges. Furthermore, we prove that some graphs obtained by some graph operations are $(2,2)$-choosable.

Baker--Bowler theory for Lagrangian Grassmannians
Published • View PublicationBIB
Baker and Bowler showed that the Grassmannian can be defined over a tract, a field-like structure generalizing both partial fields and hyperfields. This notion unifies theories of matroids over partial fields, valuated matroids, and oriented matroids. We extend Baker--Bowler theory to the Lagrangian Grassmannian which is the set of maximal isotropic subspaces in a $2n$-dimensional symplectic vector space. By Boege et al., the Lagrangian Grassmannian is parameterized as a subset of the projective space of dimension $2^{n-2}(4+\binom{n}{2})-1$ and its image is cut out by certain quadrics. We simplify a list of quadrics so that these are apparently induced by the Laplace expansions only concerning principal and almost-principal minors of a symmetric matrix. From the idea that the strong basis exchange axiom of matroids captures the combinatorial essence of the Grassmann--Plücker relations, we define matroid-like objects, called antisymmetric matroids, derived from the quadrics for the Lagrangian Grassmannian. We also provide a cryptomorphic definition in terms of circuits capturing the orthogonality and maximality of a Lagrangian subspace. We define antisymmetric matroids over tracts in two equivalent ways, which generalize both BB theory and the parameterization of the Lagrangian Grassmannian. It provides a new perspective on the Lagrangian Grassmannian over hyperfields such as the tropical hyperfield and the sign hyperfield. Our proof involves a homotopy theorem for graphs associated with antisymmetric matroids, which generalizes Maurer's homotopy theorem for matroids. We also prove that if a point in the projective space satisfies the $3$-/$4$-term quadratic relations for the Lagrangian Grassmannian and its supports form the bases of an antisymmetric matroid, then it satisfies all quadratic relations, a result motivated by the earlier work of Tutte for matroids and the Grassmannian.
A new family of $2$-scattered subspaces and related MRD codes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Scattered subspaces and $h$-scattered subspaces have been extensively studied in recent decades for both theoretical purposes and their connections to various applications. While numerous constructions of scattered subspaces exist, relatively few are known about $h$-scattered subspaces with $h\geq2$. In this paper, we establish the existence of maximum $2$-scattered $\F_q$-subspaces in $V(r,q^6)$ whenever $r\geq 3$, $r\ne 5$, and $q$ is an odd power of $2$. Additionally, we explore the corresponding MRD codes.

Spectral Antisymmetry of Twisted Graph Adjacency
We address a prime counting problem across the homology classes of a graph, presenting a graph-theoretical Dirichlet-type analogue of the prime number theorem. The main machinery we have developed and employed is a spectral antisymmetry theorem, revealing that the spectra of the twisted graph adjacency matrices have an antisymmetric distribution over the character group of the graph with a special character called the canonical character being an extremum. Additionally, we derive some trace formulas based on the twisted adjacency matrices as part of our analysis.

On subspaces defining linear sets of maximum rank

Let $V$ denote an $r$-dimensional $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$-vector space. Let $U$ and $W$ be $\mathbb{F}_q$-subspaces of $V$, $L_U$ and $L_W$ the projective points of $\mathrm{PG}\,(V,q^n)$ defined by $U$ and $W$ respectively. We address the problem when $L_W=L_U$ under the hypothesis that $U$ and $W$ have maximum dimension, i.e., $\dim_{\mathbb{F}_q} W=\dim_{\mathbb{F}_q}U=$ $rn-n $, and we give a complete characterization for $r=2$.

The $k$-representation number of the random graph
The $k$-representation number of a graph $G$ is the minimum cardinality of the system of vertex subsets with the property that every edge of $G$ is covered at least $k$ times while every non-edge is covered at most $(k-1)$ times. In particular, for $k=1$ this notion is equivalent to the clique number of a graph $G$. Extending results of Frieze and Reed, and Eaton and Grable, we study the $k$-representation number of $G(n,1/2)$. As a tool, we will prove a sharp concentration result counting the number of induced subgraphs of $G(n,1/2)$ with density $(\frac{1}{2}+α)$. In Lemma 3.7, we will show that the number of such subgraphs is close to its expected value with probability $1-\exp(-n^C)$.

On Companion sequences associated with Leonardo quaternions: Applications over finite fields
Published • View PublicationBIB
It is known that the quaternion algebras are central simple algebras and also clifford algebras. In this paper, we introduce a new class of quaternions called Lucas-Leonardo p-quaternions and derive several fundamental properties of these numbers. Furthermore, we investigate some applications related to companion sequences associated with Leonardo quaternions. In particular, we determine Lucas-Leonardo quaternions and Francois quaternions, which are zero divisors and invertible elements in the quaternion algebra over certain finite fields.
