On two non-existence results for Cameron-Liebler $k$-sets in $\mathrm{PG}(n,q)$
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper focuses on non-existence results for Cameron-Liebler $k$-sets. A Cameron-Liebler $k$-set is a collection of $k$-spaces in $\mathrm{PG}(n,q)$ or $\mathrm{AG}(n,q)$ admitting a certain parameter $x$, which is dependent on the size of this collection. One of the main research questions remains the (non-)existence of Cameron-Liebler $k$-sets with parameter $x$. This paper improves two non-existence results. First we show that the parameter of a non-trivial Cameron-Liebler $k$-set in $\mathrm{PG}(n,q)$ should be larger than $q^{n-\frac{5k}{2}-1}$, which is an improvement of an earlier known lower bound. Secondly, we prove a modular equality on the parameter $x$ of Cameron-Liebler $k$-sets in $\mathrm{PG}(n,q)$ with $x<\frac{q^{n-k}-1}{q^{k+1}-1}$, $n\geq 2k+1$, $n-k+1\geq 7$ and $n-k$ even. In the affine case we show a similar result for $n-k+1\geq 3$ and $n-k$ even. This is a generalization of earlier known modular equalities in the projective and affine case.

The Honest Embedding Dimension of a Numerical Semigroup
Published • View PublicationBIB
Attached to a singular analytic curve germ in $d$-space is a numerical semigroup: a subset $S$ of the non-negative integers which is closed under addition and whose complement isfinite. Conversely, associated to any numerical semigroup $S$ is a canonical mononial curve in $e$-space where $e$ is the number of minimal generators of the semigroup. It may happen that $d < e = e(S)$ where $S$ is the semigroup of the curve in $d$-space. Define the minimal (or `honest') embedding of a numerical semigroup to be the smallest $d$ such that $S$ is realized by a curve in $d$-space. Problem: characterize the numerical semigroups having minimal embedding dimension $d$. The answer is known for the case $d=2$ of planar curves and reviewed in an Appendix to this paper. The case $d =3$ of the problem is open. Our main result is a characterization of the multiplicity $4$ numerical semigroups whose minimal embedding dimension is $3$. See figure 1. The motivation for this work came from thinking about Legendrian curve singularities.

Connected Domination in Plane Triangulations
Published • View PublicationBIB
A set of vertices of a graph $G$ such that each vertex of $G$ is either in the set or is adjacent to a vertex in the set is called a dominating set of $G$. If additionally, the set of vertices induces a connected subgraph of $G$ then the set is a connected dominating set of $G$. The domination number $γ(G)$ of $G$ is the smallest number of vertices in a dominating set of $G$, and the connected domination number $γ_c(G)$ of $G$ is the smallest number of vertices in a connected dominating set of $G$. We find the connected domination numbers for all triangulations of up to thirteen vertices. For $n\ge 15$, $n\equiv 0$ (mod 3), we find graphs of order $n$ and $γ_c=\frac{n}{3}$. We also show that the difference $γ_c(G)-γ(G)$ can be arbitrarily large.
On the asymptotic behavior for partitions separated by parity
Published • View PublicationBIB
The study of partitions with parts separated by parity was initiated by Andrews in connection with Ramanujan's mock theta functions, and his variations on this theme have produced generating functions with a large variety of different modular properties. In this paper, we use Ingham's Tauberian theorem to compute the asymptotic main term for each of the eight functions studied by Andrews.

On Hoffman polynomials of $λ$-doubly stochastic irreducible matrices and commutative association schemes
Let $Γ$ denote a finite (strongly) connected regular (di)graph with adjacency matrix $A$. The {\em Hoffman polynomial} $h(t)$ of $Γ=Γ(A)$ is the unique polynomial of smallest degree satisfying $h(A)=J$, where $J$ denotes the all-ones matrix. Let $X$ denote a nonempty finite set. A nonnegative matrix $B\in{\mbox{Mat}}_X({\mathbb R})$ is called {\em $λ$-doubly stochastic} if $\sum_{z\in X} (B)_{yz}=\sum_{z\in X} (B)_{zy}=λ$ for each $y\in X$. In this paper we first show that there exists a polynomial $h(t)$ such that $h(B)=J$ if and only if $B$ is a $λ$-doubly stochastic irreducible matrix. This result allows us to define the Hoffman polynomial of a $λ$-doubly stochastic irreducible matrix. Now, let $B\in{\mbox{Mat}}_X({\mathbb R})$ denote a normal irreducible nonnegative matrix, and ${\cal B}=\{p(B)\mid p\in{\mathbb{C}}[t]\}$ denote the vector space over ${\mathbb{C}}$ of all polynomials in $B$. Let us define a $01$-matrix $\widehat{A}$ in the following way: $(\widehat{A})_{xy}=1$ if and only if $(B)_{xy}>0$ $(x,y\in X)$. Let $Γ=Γ(\widehat{A})$ denote a (di)graph with adjacency matrix $\widehat{A}$, diameter $D$, and let $A_D$ denote the distance-$D$ matrix of $Γ$. We show that ${\cal B}$ is the Bose--Mesner algebra of a commutative $D$-class association scheme if and only if $B$ is a normal $λ$-doubly stochastic matrix with $D+1$ distinct eigenvalues and $A_D$ is a polynomial in $B$.

Extremal decompositions of tropical varieties and relations with rigidity theory
Published • View PublicationBIB
Extremality and irreducibility constitute fundamental concepts in mathematics, particularly within tropical geometry. While extremal decomposition is typically computationally hard, this article presents a fast algorithm for identifying the extremal decomposition of tropical varieties with rational balanced weightings. Additionally, we explore connections and applications related to rigidity theory. In particular, we prove that a tropical hypersurface is extremal if and only if it has a unique reciprocal diagram up to homothety.

New cluster algebras from old: integrability beyond Zamolodchikov periodicity
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider discrete dynamical systems obtained as deformations of mutations in cluster algebras associated with finite-dimensional simple Lie algebras. The original (undeformed) dynamical systems provide the simplest examples of Zamolodchikov periodicity: they are affine birational maps for which every orbit is periodic with the same period. Following on from preliminary work by one of us with Kouloukas, here we present integrable maps obtained from deformations of cluster mutations related to the following simple root systems: $A_3$, $B_2$, $B_3$ and $D_4$. We further show how new cluster algebras arise, by considering Laurentification, that is, a lifting to a higher-dimensional map expressed in a set of new variables (tau functions), for which the dynamics exhibits the Laurent property. For the integrable map obtained by deformation of type $A_3$, which already appeared in our previous work, we show that there is a commuting map of Quispel-Roberts-Thompson (QRT) type which is built from a composition of mutations and a permutation applied to the same cluster algebra of rank 6, with an additional 2 frozen variables. Furthermore, both the deformed $A_3$ map and the QRT map correspond to addition of a point in the Mordell-Weil group of a rational elliptic surface of rank two, and the underlying cluster algebra comes from a quiver that mutation equivalent to the $q$-Painlevé III quiver found by Okubo. The deformed integrable maps of types $B_2$, $B_3$ and $D_4$ are also related to elliptic surfaces. From a dynamical systems viewpoint, the message of the paper is that special families of birational maps with completely periodic dynamics under iteration admit natural deformations that are aperiodic yet completely integrable.

Happy Ending: An Empty Hexagon in Every Set of 30 Points
Published • View PublicationBIB
Satisfiability solving has been used to tackle a range of long-standing open math problems in recent years. We add another success by solving a geometry problem that originated a century ago. In the 1930s, Esther Klein's exploration of unavoidable shapes in planar point sets in general position showed that every set of five points includes four points in convex position. For a long time, it was open if an empty hexagon, i.e., six points in convex position without a point inside, can be avoided. In 2006, Gerken and Nicolás independently proved that the answer is no. We establish the exact bound: Every 30-point set in the plane in general position contains an empty hexagon. Our key contributions include an effective, compact encoding and a search-space partitioning strategy enabling linear-time speedups even when using thousands of cores.

Reverse Degree-Based Topological Indices and QSPR Analysis of Cancer Drugs
A topological index of a graph $G$ is a numerical quantity that describes its topology. Reverse degree-based topological indices play an important role in finding topological descriptors. Azacitidine, Decitabine, and Guadecitabine are hypomethylating agents which are used for the treatment of patients with higher-risk myelodysplastic syndromes, acute myeloid leukemia, and chronic myelomonocytic leukemia which are not suitable for in-depth treatments such as induction chemotherapy. In this article, some reverse degree-based topological indices of the three said drugs are computed. Furthermore, QSPR analysis of the said topological indices is discussed and it is shown that these topological indices are highly correlated with the physical properties of the three cancer drugs. These findings may help chemists and people working in the pharmaceutical industry to predict the properties of cancer drugs without experimenting.

Edge open packing: complexity, algorithmic aspects, and bounds
Given a graph $G$, two edges $e_{1},e_{2}\in E(G)$ are said to have a common edge $e$ if $e$ joins an endvertex of $e_{1}$ to an endvertex of $e_{2}$. A subset $B\subseteq E(G)$ is an edge open packing set in $G$ if no two edges of $B$ have a common edge in $G$, and the maximum cardinality of such a set in $G$ is called the edge open packing number, $ρ_{e}^{o}(G)$, of $G$. In this paper, we prove that the decision version of the edge open packing number is NP-complete even when restricted to graphs with universal vertices, Eulerian bipartite graphs, and planar graphs with maximum degree $4$, respectively. In contrast, we present a linear-time algorithm that computes the edge open packing number of a tree. We also resolve two problems posed in the seminal paper [Edge open packing sets in graphs, RAIRO-Oper.\ Res.\ 56 (2022) 3765--3776]. Notably, we characterize the graphs $G$ that attain the upper bound $ρ_e^o(G)\le |E(G)|/δ(G)$, and provide lower and upper bounds for the edge-deleted subgraph of a graph and establish the corresponding realization result.

Faulhaber's formula, Bernoulli numbers and the equation $f(x)+x^k=f(x+1)$
In modern usage the Bernoulli numbers and polynomials follow Euler's approach and are defined using generating functions. We consider the functional equation $f(x)+x^k=f(x+1)$ and show that a solution can be derived from Faulhaber's formula for the sum of powers. We show how these solutions provide a characterization of Bernoulli numbers and related results.

Contact Lie poset algebras of types B, C, and D
We extend a recently established combinatorial index formula applying to Lie poset algebras of types B, C, and D. Then, using the extended index formula, we determine a characterization of contact Lie poset algebras of types B, C, and D corresponding to posets of height one in terms of an associated graph.

Extending Graph Burning to Hypergraphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Graph burning is a round-based game or process that discretely models the spread of influence throughout a network. We introduce a generalization of graph burning which applies to hypergraphs, as well as a variant called ''lazy'' hypergraph burning. Interestingly, lazily burning a graph is trivial, while lazily burning a hypergraph can be quite complicated. Moreover, the lazy burning model is a useful tool for analyzing the round-based model. One of our key results is that arbitrary hypergraphs do not satisfy a bound analogous to the one in the Burning Number Conjecture for graphs. We also obtain bounds on the burning number and lazy burning number of a hypergraph in terms of its parameters, and present several open problems in the field of (lazy) hypergraph burning.

Rational Cherednik Algebras and Torus Knot Invariants
Published • View PublicationBIB
The HOMFLY polynomial of the $(m,n)$ torus knot $T_{m,n}$ can be extracted from the doubly graded character of the finite-dimensional representation $\mathrm{L}_{\frac{m}{n}}$ of the type $A_{n-1}$ rational Cherednik algebra as observed by Gorsky, Oblomkov, Rasmussen and Shende. It is furthermore conjectured that one can obtain the triply-graded Khovanov-Rozansky homology of $T_{m,n}$ by considering a certain filtration on $\mathrm{L}_{\frac{m}{n}}$. In this paper, we show that two of the proposed candidates, the algebraic filtration and the inductive filtration, are equal.

A necessary and sufficient condition for bounds on the sum of a list of real numbers and its applications
Let $x_1,...,x_n$ be a list of real numbers, let $s :=\sum_{i=1}^{n}x_i$ and let $h:\mathbb{N} \rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ be a function. We gave a necessary and sufficient condition for $s>h(n)$ (respectively, $s<h(n)$). Let $G=(V,E)$ be a graph, let $\{H_1,...,H_n\}$ and $\{V_1,...,V_n\}$ be a decomposition and a partition of $G$, respectively. Let $H_{i,j}$ and $V_{i,j}, i\leq j,$ be the union of $H_i,...,H_j$ and $V_i,...,V_j$, respectively, where subscripts are taken modulo $n$. $G$ is \emph{generalized periodic} or \emph{partition-transitive} if for each pair of integers $(i,j)$, $H_{i,i+k}$ and $H_{j,j+k}$ or $V_{i,i+k}$ and $V_{j,j+k}$ are isomorphic for all $k$, $1\leq k\leq n$, respectively. Let $f:E \rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ and $g:V \rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ be mappings, let the \emph{weight} of $f$ or $g$ on $G$ be $Σ_{e\in E}f(e)$ or $Σ_{v\in V}g(v)$, respectively. Suppose that parameters $λ$ and $ξ$ of $G$ can be expressed as the minimum or maximum weight of specified $f$ and $g$, respectively. Then our conditions imply a necessary and sufficient condition for $λ(G_1)=h(n)$ (respectively, $ξ(G_2)=h(n)$), where $G_1$ is generalized periodic and $G_2$ is partition-transitive. For example, the crossing number $\textrm{cr}(\odot(T^n))$ of a periodic graph $\odot(T^n)$, $\textrm{cr}(\odot(T^n))=h(n)$. As applications, we obtained $\textrm{cr}(C(4n;\{1,4\}))$ of the circulant $C(4n;\{1,4\})$, the paired domination number of $C_5\Box C_n$ and the upper total domination number of $C_4\Box C_n$.

Evaluating the Gilbert-Varshamov Bound for Constrained Systems
Published • View PublicationBIB
We revisit the well-known Gilbert-Varshamov (GV) bound for constrained systems. In 1991, Kolesnik and Krachkovsky showed that GV bound can be determined via the solution of some optimization problem. Later, Marcus and Roth (1992) modified the optimization problem and improved the GV bound in many instances. In this work, we provide explicit numerical procedures to solve these two optimization problems and hence, compute the bounds. We then show the procedures can be further simplified when we plot the respective curves. In the case where the graph presentation comprise a single state, we provide explicit formulas for both bounds.

On the maximum size of variable-length non-overlapping codes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Non-overlapping codes are a set of codewords such that the prefix of each codeword is not a suffix of any codeword in the set, including itself. If the lengths of the codewords are variable, it is additionally required that every codeword is not contained in any other codeword as a subword. Let $C(n,q)$ be the maximum size of $q$-ary fixed-length non-overlapping codes of length $n$. The upper bound on $C(n,q)$ has been well studied. However, the nontrivial upper bound on the maximum size of variable-length non-overlapping codes of length at most $n$ remains open. In this paper, by establishing a link between variable-length non-overlapping codes and fixed-length ones, we are able to show that the size of a $q$-ary variable-length non-overlapping code is upper bounded by $C(n,q)$. Furthermore, we prove that the average length of the codewords in a $q$-ary variable-length non-overlapping codes is lower bounded by $\lceil \log_q \tilde{C} \rceil$, and is asymptotically no shorter than $n-2$ as $q$ approaches $\infty$, where $\tilde{C}$ denotes the cardinality of $q$-ary variable-length non-overlapping codes of length up to $n$.

Generalized Eulerian Numbers and Directed Friends-and-seats Graphs
Let $A(n,m)$ denote the Eulerian numbers, which count the number of permutations on $[n]$ with exactly $m$ descents, or, due to the Foata transform, the number of permutations on $[n]$ with exactly $m$ excedances. Friends-and-seats graphs, also known as friends-and-strangers graphs, are a seemingly unrelated recent construction in graph theory. In this paper, we introduce directed friends-and-seats graphs and establish a connection between these graphs and a generalization of the Eulerian numbers. We use this connection to reprove and extend a Worpitzky-like identity on generalized Eulerian numbers.
Graph Burning: Bounds and Hardness
Let $G=(V,E)$ be an undirected graph. The graph burning is defined as follows: at time $t=0$, all vertices in $G$ are unburned. For each time $t\geq 1$, an unburned vertex is chosen to burn, and at each subsequent time, the fire spreads from each burned vertex to all its neighbors. Once a vertex is burned, it remains burned for all future steps. The process continues until all vertices in $V$ are burned. The burning number of a graph $G$, denoted $b(G)$, is the smallest integer $k$ such that there exists a sequence of vertices $(v_1,v_2,\ldots, v_k)\subseteq V$, where $v_i$ is burned at time $i$, and all vertices in $V$ are burned within time step $k$. The Burning Number problem asks whether the burning number of an input graph $G$ is at most $k$ or not. In this paper, we study the Burning Number problem both from an algorithmic and a structural point of view. The Burning Number problem is known to be NP-complete for interval graphs. Here, we prove that this problem is NP-complete even when restricted to connected proper interval graphs. The well-known burning number conjecture asserts that all the vertices of a graph of order $n$ can be burned in $\lceil \sqrt{n}~\rceil$ steps. In line with this conjecture, the upper and lower bounds of $b(G)$ are well-studied for various graph classes. Here, we provide an improved upper bound for the burning number of connected $P_k$-free graphs and show that the bound is tight up to an additive constant $1$. Finally, we study two variants of the problem, namely edge burning (only edges are burned) and total burning (both vertices and edges are burned). In particular, we establish their relationship with the burning number problem and evaluate the algorithmic complexity of these variants.

The Catalan's triangle system, the Catalan's trapezoids and (q,2)--Fock space
