Complex Hadamard matrices contained in a Bose-Mesner algebra
Published in Special Matrices 3 (2015), 91-110 • View PublicationBIB
A complex Hadamard matrix is a square matrix H with complex entries of absolute value 1 satisfying $HH^*= nI$, where $*$ stands for the Hermitian transpose and I is the identity matrix of order $n$. In this paper, we first determine the image of a certain rational map from the $d$-dimensional complex projective space to $\mathbb{C}^{d(d+1)/2}$. Applying this result with $d=3$, we give constructions of complex Hadamard matrices, and more generally, type-II matrices, in the Bose-Mesner algebra of a certain 3-class symmetric association scheme. In particular, we recover the complex Hadamard matrices of order 15 found by Ada Chan. We compute the Haagerup sets to show inequivalence of resulting type-II matrices, and determine the Nomura algebras to show that the resulting matrices are not decomposable into generalized tensor products.

Complementary Ramsey numbers and Ramsey graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we consider a variant of Ramsey numbers which we call complementary Ramsey numbers $\bar{R}(m,t,s)$. We first establish their connections to pairs of Ramsey $(s,t)$-graphs. Using the classification of Ramsey $(s,t)$-graphs for small $s,t$, we determine the complementary Ramsey numbers $\bar{R}(m,t,s)$ for $(s,t)=(4,4)$ and $(3,6)$.

On the smallest eigenvalues of the line graphs of some trees
Published in Linear Algebra and its Applications 466 (2015) 501-511 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we study the characteristic polynomials of the line graphs of generalized Bethe trees. We give an infinite family of such graphs sharing the same smallest eigenvalue. Our family generalizes the family of coronas of complete graphs discovered by Cvetković and Stevanović.
Edge-signed graphs with smallest eigenvalue greater than -2
Published in J. Combin. Theory, Ser. B 110 (2015), pp. 90--111 • View PublicationBIB
We give a structural classification of edge-signed graphs with smallest eigenvalue greater than -2. We prove a conjecture of Hoffman about the smallest eigenvalue of the line graph of a tree that was stated in the 1970s. Furthermore, we prove a more general result extending Hoffman's original statement to all edge-signed graphs with smallest eigenvalue greater than -2. Our results give a classification of the special graphs of fat Hoffman graphs with smallest eigenvalue greater than -3.

Fat Hoffman graphs with smallest eigenvalue at least $-1-τ$
Published in Ars Mathematica Contemporanea 7 (2014) 247-262 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we show that all fat Hoffman graphs with smallest eigenvalue at least -1-τ, where τis the golden ratio, can be described by a finite set of fat (-1-τ)-irreducible Hoffman graphs. In the terminology of Woo and Neumaier, we mean that every fat Hoffman graph with smallest eigenvalue at least -1-τis an H-line graph, where H is the set of isomorphism classes of maximal fat (-1-τ)-irreducible Hoffman graphs. It turns out that there are 37 fat (-1-τ)-irreducible Hoffman graphs, up to isomorphism.
On fat Hoffman graphs with smallest eigenvalue at least -3

We investigate fat Hoffman graphs with smallest eigenvalue at least -3, using their special graphs. We show that the special graph S(H) of an indecomposable fat Hoffman graph H is represented by the standard lattice or an irreducible root lattice. Moreover, we show that if the special graph admits an integral representation, that is, the lattice spanned by it is not an exceptional root lattice, then the special graph S(H) is isomorphic to one of the Dynkin graphs A_n, D_n, or extended Dynkin graphs A_n or D_n.
Upper bounds on cyclotomic numbers
Published in Linear Algebra and Applications 438 (2012), 111-120 • View PublicationBIB
In this article, we give upper bounds for cyclotomic numbers of order e over a finite field with q elements, where e is a divisor of q-1. In particular, we show that under certain assumptions, cyclotomic numbers are at most $\lceil\frac{k}{2}\rceil$, and the cyclotomic number (0,0) is at most $\lceil\frac{k}{2}\rceil-1$, where k=(q-1)/e. These results are obtained by using a known formula for the determinant of a matrix whose entries are binomial coefficients.

On triply even binary codes
Published in J. London Math. Soc. (2) 86 (2012) 1-16 • View PublicationBIB
A triply even code is a binary linear code in which the weight of every codeword is divisible by 8. We show how two doubly even codes of lengths m_1 and m_2 can be combined to make a triply even code of length m_1+m_2, and then prove that every maximal triply even code of length 48 can be obtained by combining two doubly even codes of length 24 in a certain way. Using this result, we show that there are exactly 10 maximal triply even codes of length 48 up to equivalence.

On the classification of weighing matrices and self-orthogonal codes
Published in J. Combin. Designs 20 (2012), 40-57 • View PublicationBIB
We provide a classification method of weighing matrices based on a classification of self-orthogonal codes. Using this method, we classify weighing matrices of orders up to 15 and order 17, by revising some known classification. In addition, we give a revised classification of weighing matrices of weight 5. A revised classification of ternary maximal self-orthogonal codes of lengths 18 and 19 is also presented.

Spin models constructed from Hadamard matrices
Published in Journal of Applied Mathematics and Computing 40 (2012), 231-248 • View PublicationBIB
A spin model (for link invariants) is a square matrix $W$ which satisfies certain axioms. For a spin model $W$, it is known that $W^TW^{-1}$ is a permutation matrix, and its order is called the index of $W$. F. Jaeger and K. Nomura found spin models of index 2, by modifying the construction of symmetric spin models from Hadamard matrices. The aim of this paper is to give a construction of spin models of an arbitrary even index from any Hadamard matrix. In particular, we show that our spin models of indices a power of 2 are new.

Hamming graphs in Nomura Algebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let A be an association scheme on q\geq 3 vertices. We show that the Bose-Mesner algebra of the generalized Hamming scheme H(n,A), for n\geq 2, is not the Nomura algebra of a type II matrix. This result gives examples of formally self-dual Bose-Mesner algebras that are not the Nomura algebras of type II matrices.
Classification of generalized Hadamard matrices H(6,3) and quaternary Hermitian self-dual codes of length 18
Published in Electronic J. Combin. 17 (2010), R171 • View PublicationBIB
All generalized Hadamard matrices of order 18 over a group of order 3, H(6,3), are enumerated in two different ways: once, as class regular symmetric (6,3)-nets, or symmetric transversal designs on 54 points and 54 blocks with a group of order 3 acting semi-regularly on points and blocks, and secondly, as collections of full weight vectors in quaternary Hermitian self-dual codes of length 18. The second enumeration is based on the classification of Hermitian self-dual [18,9] codes over GF(4), completed in this paper. It is shown that up to monomial equivalence, there are 85 generalized Hadamard matrices H(6,3), and 245 inequivalent Hermitian self-dual codes of length 18 over GF(4).

The codes and the lattices of Hadamard matrices
Published in Europ. J. Combin. 33 (2012), 519-533 • View PublicationBIB
It has been observed by Assmus and Key as a result of the complete classification of Hadamard matrices of order 24, that the extremality of the binary code of a Hadamard matrix H of order 24 is equivalent to the extremality of the ternary code of H^T. In this note, we present two proofs of this fact, neither of which depends on the classification. One is a consequence of a more general result on the minimum weight of the dual of the code of a Hadamard matrix. The other relates the lattices obtained from the binary code and from the ternary code. Both proofs are presented in greater generality to include higher orders. In particular, the latter method is also used to show the equivalence of (i) the extremality of the ternary code, (ii) the extremality of the Z_4-code, and (iii) the extremality of a lattice obtained from a Hadamard matrix of order 48.
