Expansion properties of Whitehead moves on cubic graphs
Published in Comptes Rendus. Math. (2024) • View PublicationBIB
The present note concerns the "graph of graphs" that has cubic graphs as vertices connected by edges represented by the so-called Whitehead moves. Here, we prove that the outer-conductance of the graph of graphs tends to zero as the number of vertices tends to infinity. This answers a question of K. Rafi in the negative.
Kleinian sphere packings, reflection groups, and arithmeticity
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we study crystallographic sphere packings and Kleinian sphere packings, introduced first by Kontorovich and Nakamura in 2017 and then studied further by Kapovich and Kontorovich in 2021. In particular, we solve the problem of existence of crystallographic sphere packings in certain higher dimensions posed by Kontorovich and Nakamura. In addition, we present a geometric doubling procedure allowing to obtain sphere packings from some Coxeter polyhedra without isolated roots, and study "properly integral" packings (that is, ones which are integral but not superintegral). Our techniques rely extensively on computations with Lorentzian quadratic forms, their orthogonal groups, and associated higher-dimensional hyperbolic polyhedra.

On free semigroups of affine maps on the real line
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this note we generalise some of the work of Klarner on free semigroups of affine maps acting on the real line by using a classical approach from geometric group theory (the Ping-Pong lemma). We also investigate the boundaries within which Klarner's necessary condition for a semigroup to be related is applicable.

Packable hyperbolic surfaces with symmetries
Published • View PublicationBIB
We discuss several ways of packing a hyperbolic surface with circles (of either varying radii or all being congruent) or horocycles, and note down some observations related to their symmetries (or the absence thereof).

Kissing number in non-Euclidean spaces of constant sectional curvature
Published in Math. Comp. (2021) • View PublicationBIB
This paper provides upper and lower bounds on the kissing number of congruent radius $r > 0$ spheres in hyperbolic $\mathbb{H}^n$ and spherical $\mathbb{S}^n$ spaces, for $n\geq 2$. For that purpose, the kissing number is replaced by the kissing function $κ_H(n, r)$, resp. $κ_S(n, r)$, which depends on the dimension $n$ and the radius $r$. After we obtain some theoretical upper and lower bounds for $κ_H(n, r)$, we study their asymptotic behaviour and show, in particular, that $κ_H(n,r) \sim (n-1) \cdot d_{n-1} \cdot B(\frac{n-1}{2}, \frac{1}{2}) \cdot e^{(n-1) r}$, where $d_n$ is the sphere packing density in $\mathbb{R}^n$, and $B$ is the beta-function. Then we produce numeric upper bounds by solving a suitable semidefinite program, as well as lower bounds coming from concrete spherical codes. A similar approach allows us to locate the values of $κ_S(n, r)$, for $n= 3,\, 4$, over subintervals in $[0, π]$ with relatively high accuracy.

Growth rates of Coxeter groups and Perron numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
We define a large class of abstract Coxeter groups, that we call $\infty$--spanned, and for which the word growth rate and the geodesic growth rate appear to be Perron numbers. This class contains a fair amount of Coxeter groups acting on hyperbolic spaces, thus corroborating a conjecture by Kellerhals and Perren. We also show that for this class the geodesic growth rate strictly dominates the word growth rate.

Kissing number in spherical space
This paper investigates the behaviour of the kissing number $κ(n, r)$ of congruent radius $r > 0$ spheres in $\mathbb{S}^n$, for $n\geq 2$. Such a quantity depends on the radius $r$, and we plot the approximate graph of $κ(n, r)$ with relatively high accuracy by using new upper and lower bounds that are produced via semidefinite programming and by using spherical codes, respectively.

Kissing number in hyperbolic space
This paper provides upper and lower bounds on the kissing number of congruent radius $r > 0$ spheres in $\mathbb{H}^n$, for $n\geq 2$. For that purpose, the kissing number is replaced by the kissing function $κ(n, r)$ which depends on the radius $r$. After we obtain some theoretical lower and upper bounds for $κ(n, r)$, we study their asymptotic behaviour and show, in particular, that $\lim_{r\to \infty} \frac{\log κ(n,r)}{r} = n-1$. Finally, we compare them with the numeric upper bounds obtained by solving a suitable semidefinite program.
Telescopic groups and symmetries of combinatorial maps
In the present paper, we show that many combinatorial and topological objects, such as maps, hypermaps, three-dimensional pavings, constellations and branched coverings of the two--sphere admit any given finite automorphism group. This enhances the already known results by Frucht, Cori -- Machì, Širáň -- Škoviera, and other authors. We also provide a more universal technique for showing that ``any finite automorphism group is possible'', that is applicable to wider classes or, in contrast, to more particular sub-classes of said combinatorial and geometric objects. Finally, we show that any given finite automorphism group can be realised by sufficiently many non-isomorphic such entities (super-exponentially many with respect to a certain combinatorial complexity measure).

Many cusped hyperbolic 3-manifolds do not bound geometrically
Published in Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 18:5 (2020), 2223-2243 • View PublicationBIB
In this note, we show that there exist cusped hyperbolic $3$-manifolds that embed geodesically, but cannot bound geometrically. Thus, being a geometric boundary is a non-trivial property for such manifolds. Our result complements the work by Long and Reid on geometric boundaries of compact hyperbolic $4$-manifolds, and by Kolpakov, Reid and Slavich on embedding arithmetic hyperbolic manifolds.

Spherical and geodesic growth rates of right-angled Coxeter and Artin groups are Perron numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove that for any infinite right-angled Coxeter or Artin group, its spherical and geodesic growth rates (with respect to the standard generating set) either take values in the set of Perron numbers, or equal $1$. Also, we compute the average number of geodesics representing an element of given word length in such groups.
Three-dimensional maps and subgroup growth
Published in Manuscripta Math. (2021) • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we derive a generating series for the number of cellular complexes known as pavings or three-dimensional maps, on $n$ darts, thus solving an analogue of Tutte's problem in dimension three. The generating series we derive also counts free subgroups of index $n$ in $Δ^+ = \mathbb{Z}_2*\mathbb{Z}_2*\mathbb{Z}_2$ via a simple bijection between pavings and finite index subgroups which can be deduced from the action of $Δ^+$ on the cosets of a given subgroup. We then show that this generating series is non-holonomic. Furthermore, we provide and study the generating series for isomorphism classes of pavings, which correspond to conjugacy classes of free subgroups of finite index in $Δ^+$. Computational experiments performed with software designed by the authors provide some statistics about the topology and combinatorics of pavings on $n\leq 16$ darts.

Free subgroups of free products and combinatorial hypermaps
Published in Discrete Mathematics, 2019 • View PublicationBIB
We derive a generating series for the number of free subgroups of finite index in $Δ^+ = \mathbb{Z}_p*\mathbb{Z}_q$ by using a connection between free subgroups of $Δ^+$ and certain hypermaps (also known as ribbon graphs or "fat" graphs), and show that this generating series is transcendental. We provide non-linear recurrence relations for the above numbers based on differential equations that are part of the Riccati hierarchy. We also study the generating series for conjugacy classes of free subgroups of finite index in $Δ^+$, which correspond to isomorphism classes of hypermaps. Asymptotic formulas are provided for the numbers of free subgroups of given finite index, conjugacy classes of such subgroups, or, equivalently, various types of hypermaps and their isomorphism classes.

Hyperbolic four-manifolds, colourings and mutations
Published in Proc. London Math. Soc. (2016), 113 (2), 163-184 • View PublicationBIB
We develop a way of seeing a complete orientable hyperbolic $4$-manifold $\mathcal{M}$ as an orbifold cover of a Coxeter polytope $\mathcal{P} \subset \mathbb{H}^4$ that has a facet colouring. We also develop a way of finding totally geodesic sub-manifolds $\mathcal{N}$ in $\mathcal{M}$, and describing the result of mutations along $\mathcal{N}$. As an application of our method, we construct an example of a complete orientable hyperbolic $4$-manifold $\mathcal{X}$ with a single non-toric cusp and a complete orientable hyperbolic $4$-manifold $\mathcal{Y}$ with a single toric cusp. Both $\mathcal{X}$ and $\mathcal{Y}$ have twice the minimal volume among all complete orientable hyperbolic $4$-manifolds.

Geodesic growth of right-angled Coxeter groups based on trees
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we exhibit two infinite families of trees $\{T^1_n\}_{n \geq 17}$ and $\{T^2_n\}_{n \geq 17}$ on $n$ vertices, such that $T^1_n$ and $T^2_n$ are non-isomorphic, co-spectral, and the right-angled Coxeter groups (RACGs) based on $T^1_n$ and $T^2_n$ have the same geodesic growth with respect to the standard generating set. We then show that the spectrum of a tree does is not sufficient to determine the geodesic growth of the RACG based on that tree, by providing two infinite families of trees $\{S^1_n\}_{n \geq 11}$ and $\{S^2_n\}_{n \geq 11}$, on $n$ vertices, such that $S^1_n$ and $S^2_n$ are non-isomorphic, co-spectral, and the right-angled Coxeter groups (RACGs) based on $S^1_n$ and $S^2_n$ have distinct geodesic growth. Asymptotically, as $n\rightarrow \infty$, each set $T^i_n$, or $S^i_n$, $i=1,2$, has the cardinality of the set of all trees on $n$ vertices. Our proofs are constructive and use two families of trees previously studied by B. McKay and C. Godsil.

Symmetries of hyperbolic 4-manifolds
Published in International Mathematics Research Notices, Volume 2016, Issue 9, 2677-2716 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, for each finite group $G$, we construct explicitly a non-compact complete finite-volume arithmetic hyperbolic $4$-manifold $M$ such that $\mathrm{Isom}\,M \cong G$, or $\mathrm{Isom}^{+}\,M \cong G$. In order to do so, we use essentially the geometry of Coxeter polytopes in the hyperbolic $4$-space, on one hand, and the combinatorics of simplicial complexes, on the other.

On the optimality of the ideal right-angled 24-cell
Published in Algebraic & Geometric Topology 12 (2012) 1941-1960 • View PublicationBIB
We prove that among four-dimensional ideal right-angled hyperbolic polytopes the 24-cell is of minimal volume and of minimal facet number. As a corollary, a dimension bound for ideal right-angled hyperbolic polytopes is obtained.

Deformation of finite-volume hyperbolic Coxeter polyhedra, limiting growth rates and Pisot numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
A connection between real poles of the growth functions for Coxeter groups acting on hyperbolic space of dimensions three and greater and algebraic integers is investigated. In particular, a geometric convergence of fundamental domains for cocompact hyperbolic Coxeter groups with finite-volume limiting polyhedron provides a relation between Salem numbers and Pisot numbers. Several examples conclude this work.
