Large matchings in uniform hypergraphs and the conjectures of Erdos and Samuels

In this paper we study conditions which guarantee the existence of perfect matchings and perfect fractional matchings in uniform hypergraphs. We reduce this problem to an old conjecture by Erdős on estimating the maximum number of edges in a hypergraph when the (fractional) matching number is given, which we are able to solve in some special cases using probabilistic techniques. Based on these results, we obtain some general theorems on the minimum $d$-degree ensuring the existence of perfect (fractional) matchings. In particular, we asymptotically determine the minimum vertex degree which guarantees a perfect matching in 4-uniform and 5-uniform hypergraphs. We also discuss an application to a problem of finding an optimal data allocation in a distributed storage system.
On the number of perfect matchings in random lifts

Let G be a fixed connected multigraph with no loops. A random n-lift of G is obtained by replacing each vertex of G by a set of n vertices (where these sets are pairwise disjoint) and replacing each edge by a randomly chosen perfect matching between the n-sets corresponding to the endpoints of the edge. Let X_G be the number of perfect matchings in a random lift of G. We study the distribution of X_G in the limit as n tends to infinity, using the small subgraph conditioning method.
We present several results including an asymptotic formula for the expectation of X_G when G is d-regular, d\geq 3. The interaction of perfect matchings with short cycles in random lifts of regular multigraphs is also analysed. Partial calculations are performed for the second moment of X_G, with full details given for two example multigraphs, including the complete graph K_4.
To assist in our calculations we provide a theorem for estimating a summation over multiple dimensions using Laplace's method. This result is phrased as a summation over lattice points, and may prove useful in future applications.
Upper tails for counting objects in randomly induced subhypergraphs and rooted random graphs

General upper tail estimates are given for counting edges in a random induced subhypergraph of a fixed hypergraph H, with an easy proof by estimating the moments. As an application we consider the numbers of arithmetic progressions and Schur triples in random subsets of integers. In the second part of the paper we return to the subgraph counts in random graphs and provide upper tail estimates in the rooted case.
A sharp threshold for random graphs with a monochromatic triangle in every edge coloring

Let $\R$ be the set of all finite graphs $G$ with the Ramsey property that every coloring of the edges of $G$ by two colors yields a monochromatic triangle. In this paper we establish a sharp threshold for random graphs with this property. Let $G(n,p)$ be the random graph on $n$ vertices with edge probability $p$. We prove that there exists a function $\hat c=\hat c(n)$ with $0<c<\hat c<C$ such that for any $\eps > 0$, as $n$ tends to infinity $$Pr[G(n,(1-\eps)\hat c/\sqrt{n}) \in \R ] \to 0$$ and $$Pr [ G(n,(1+\eps)\hat c/\sqrt{n}) \in \R ] \to 1.$$ A crucial tool that is used in the proof and is of independent interest is a generalization of Szemerédi's Regularity Lemma to a certain hypergraph setting.
