Computing maximum likelihood thresholds using graph rigidity
Published in Alg. Stat. 14 (2023) 287-305 • View PublicationBIB
The maximum likelihood threshold (MLT) of a graph $G$ is the minimum number of samples to almost surely guarantee existence of the maximum likelihood estimate in the corresponding Gaussian graphical model. Recently a new characterization of the MLT in terms of rigidity-theoretic properties of $G$ was proved \cite{Betal}. This characterization was then used to give new combinatorial lower bounds on the MLT of any graph. We continue this line of research by exploiting combinatorial rigidity results to compute the MLT precisely for several families of graphs. These include graphs with at most $9$ vertices, graphs with at most 24 edges, every graph sufficiently close to a complete graph and graphs with bounded degrees.

Rigidity of symmetric frameworks on the cylinder
Published • View PublicationBIB
A bar-joint framework $(G,p)$ is the combination of a finite simple graph $G=(V,E)$ and a placement $p:V\rightarrow \mathbb{R}^d$. The framework is rigid if the only edge-length preserving continuous deformations of the vertices arise from isometries of the space. This article combines two recent extensions of the generic theory of rigid and flexible graphs by considering symmetric frameworks in $\mathbb{R}^3$ restricted to move on a surface. In particular necessary combinatorial conditions are given for a symmetric framework on the cylinder to be isostatic (i.e. minimally infinitesimally rigid) under any finite point group symmetry. In every case when the symmetry group is cyclic, which we prove restricts the group to being inversion, half-turn or reflection symmetry, these conditions are then shown to be sufficient under suitable genericity assumptions, giving precise combinatorial descriptions of symmetric isostatic graphs in these contexts.
Global Rigidity of Line Constrained Frameworks
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider the global rigidity problem for bar-joint frameworks where each vertex is constrained to lie on a particular line in $\mathbb R^d$. In our setting we allow multiple vertices to be constrained to the same line. Under a mild assumption on the given set of lines we give a complete combinatorial characterisation of graphs that are generically globally rigid in this setting. This gives a $d$-dimensional extension of the well-known combinatorial characterisation of 1-dimensional global rigidity.
Universal Rigidity of Ladders on the line

In "Universal rigidity on the line, point orde" it is shown, answering a question of Jordán and Nguyen, that universal rigidity of a generic bar-joint framework in R^1 depends on more than the ordering of the vertices. The graph G that was used in that paper is a ladder with three rungs. Here we provide a general answer when that ladder with three rungs in the line is universally rigid and when it is not.

Uniquely realisable graphs in analytic normed planes
Published • View PublicationBIB
A bar-joint framework $(G,p)$ in the Euclidean space $\mathbb{E}^d$ is globally rigid if it is the unique realisation, up to rigid congruences, of $G$ in $\mathbb{E}^d$ with the edge lengths of $(G,p)$. Building on key results of Hendrickson and Connelly, Jackson and Jordán gave a complete combinatorial characterisation of when a generic framework is global rigidity in $\mathbb{E}^2$. We prove an analogous result when the Euclidean norm is replaced by any norm that is analytic on $\mathbb{R}^2 \setminus \{0\}$. More precisely, we show that a graph $G=(V,E)$ is globally rigid in a non-Euclidean analytic normed plane if and only if $G$ is 2-connected and $G-e$ contains 2 edge-disjoint spanning trees for all $e\in E$. The main technical tool is a recursive construction of 2-connected and redundantly rigid graphs in analytic normed planes. We also obtain some sufficient conditions for global rigidity as corollaries of our main result and prove that the analogous necessary conditions hold in $d$-dimensional analytic normed spaces.
Quotient graphs of symmetrically rigid frameworks
Published in Documenta Mathematica 29(3), 2024 • View PublicationBIB
A natural problem in combinatorial rigidity theory concerns the determination of the rigidity or flexibility of bar-joint frameworks in $\mathbb{R}^d$ that admit some non-trivial symmetry. When $d=2$ there is a large literature on this topic. In particular, it is typical to quotient the symmetric graph by the group and analyse the rigidity of symmetric, but otherwise generic frameworks, using the combinatorial structure of the appropriate group-labelled quotient graph. However, mirroring the situation for generic rigidity, little is known combinatorially when $d\geq 3$. Nevertheless in the periodic case, a key result of Borcea and Streinu characterises when a quotient graph can be lifted to a rigid periodic framework in $\mathbb{R}^d$. We develop an analogous theory for symmetric frameworks in $\mathbb{R}^d$. The results obtained apply to all finite and infinite 2-dimensional point groups, and then in arbitrary dimension they concern a wide range of infinite point groups, sufficiently large finite groups and groups containing translations and rotations. For the case of finite groups we also derive results concerning the probability of assigning group labels to a quotient graph so that the resulting lift is symmetrically rigid in $\mathbb{R}^d$.

Coincident-point rigidity in normed planes
Published • View PublicationBIB
A bar-joint framework $(G,p)$ is the combination of a graph $G$ and a map $p$ assigning positions, in some space, to the vertices of $G$. The framework is rigid if every edge-length-preserving continuous motion of the vertices arises from an isometry of the space. We will analyse rigidity when the space is a (non-Euclidean) normed plane and two designated vertices are mapped to the same position. This non-genericity assumption leads us to a count matroid first introduced by Jackson, Kaszanitsky and the third author. We show that independence in this matroid is equivalent to independence as a suitably regular bar-joint framework in a normed plane with two coincident points; this characterises when a regular normed plane coincident-point framework is rigid and allows us to deduce a delete-contract characterisation. We then apply this result to show that an important construction operation (generalised vertex splitting) preserves the stronger property of global rigidity in normed planes and use this to construct rich families of globally rigid graphs when the normed plane is analytic.

Generalised rigid body motions in non-Euclidean planes with applications to global rigidity
Published in Journal of Mathematical Analysis and Applications (2022) • View PublicationBIB
A bar-joint framework $(G,p)$ in a (non-Euclidean) real normed plane $X$ is the combination of a finite, simple graph $G$ and a placement $p$ of the vertices in $X$. A framework $(G,p)$ is globally rigid in $X$ if every other framework $(G,q)$ in $X$ with the same edge lengths as $(G,p)$ arises from an isometry of $X$. The weaker property of local rigidity in normed planes (where only $(G,q)$ within a neighbourhood of $(G,p)$ are considered) has been studied by several researchers over the last 5 years after being introduced by Kitson and Power for $\ell_p$-norms. However global rigidity is an unexplored area for general normed spaces, despite being intensely studied in the Euclidean context by many groups over the last 40 years. In order to understand global rigidity in $X$, we introduce new generalised rigid body motions in normed planes where the norm is determined by an analytic function. This theory allows us to deduce several geometric and combinatorial results concerning the global rigidity of bar-joint frameworks in $X$.
Maximum likelihood thresholds via graph rigidity
Published • View PublicationBIB
The maximum likelihood threshold (MLT) of a graph $G$ is the minimum number of samples to almost surely guarantee existence of the maximum likelihood estimate in the corresponding Gaussian graphical model. We give a new characterization of the MLT in terms of rigidity-theoretic properties of $G$ and use this characterization to give new combinatorial lower bounds on the MLT of any graph. We use the new lower bounds to give high-probability guarantees on the maximum likelihood thresholds of sparse Erd{ö}s-Rényi random graphs in terms of their average density. These examples show that the new lower bounds are within a polylog factor of tight, where, on the same graph families, all known lower bounds are trivial. Based on computational experiments made possible by our methods, we conjecture that the MLT of an Erd{ö}s-Rényi random graph is equal to its generic completion rank with high probability. Using structural results on rigid graphs in low dimension, we can prove the conjecture for graphs with MLT at most $4$ and describe the threshold probability for the MLT to switch from $3$ to $4$. We also give a geometric characterization of the MLT of a graph in terms of a new "lifting" problem for frameworks that is interesting in its own right. The lifting perspective yields a new connection between the weak MLT (where the maximum likelihood estimate exists only with positive probability) and the classical Hadwiger-Nelson problem.
Universal rigidity on the line, point order
We show that universal rigidity of a generic bar and joint framework (G,p) in the line depends on more than the ordering of the vertices. In particular, we construct examples of one-dimensional generic frameworks with the same graph and ordering of the vertices, such that one is universally rigid and one is not. This answers, in the negative, a question of Jordan and Nguyen.

An improved bound for the rigidity of linearly constrained frameworks
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider the problem of characterising the generic rigidity of bar-joint frameworks in $\mathbb{R}^d$ in which each vertex is constrained to lie in a given affine subspace. The special case when $d=2$ was previously solved by I. Streinu and L. Theran in 2010 and the case when each vertex is constrained to lie in an affine subspace of dimension $t$, and $d\geq t(t-1)$ was solved by Cruickshank, Guler and the first two authors in 2019. We extend the latter result by showing that the given characterisation holds whenever $d\geq 2t$.
Flexible circuits in the $d$-dimensional rigidity matroid
Published • View PublicationBIB
A bar-joint framework $(G,p)$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$ is rigid if the only edge-length preserving continuous motions of the vertices arise from isometries of $\mathbb{R}^d$. It is known that, when $(G,p)$ is generic, its rigidity depends only on the underlying graph $G$, and is determined by the rank of the edge set of $G$ in the generic $d$-dimensional rigidity matroid $\mathcal{R}_d$. Complete combinatorial descriptions of the rank function of this matroid are known when $d=1,2$, and imply that all circuits in $\mathcal{R}_d$ are generically rigid in $\mathbb{R}^d$ when $d=1,2$. Determining the rank function of $\mathcal{R}_d$ is a long standing open problem when $d\geq 3$, and the existence of non-rigid circuits in $\mathcal{R}_d$ for $d\geq 3$ is a major contributing factor to why this problem is so difficult. We begin a study of non-rigid circuits by characterising the non-rigid circuits in $\mathcal{R}_d$ which have at most $d+6$ vertices.

Global rigidity of 2-dimensional linearly constrained frameworks
Published • View PublicationBIB
A linearly constrained framework in $\mathbb{R}^d$ is a point configuration together with a system of constraints which fixes the distances between some pairs of points and additionally restricts some of the points to lie in given affine subspaces. It is globally rigid if the configuration is uniquely defined by the constraint system, and is rigid if it is uniquely defined within some small open neighbourhood. Streinu and Theran characterised generic rigidity of linearly constrained frameworks in $\mathbb{R}^2$ in 2010. We obtain an analagous characterisation for generic global rigidity in $\mathbb{R}^2$. More precisely we show that a generic linearly constrained framework in $\mathbb{R}^2$ is globally rigid if and only if it is redundantly rigid and `balanced'. For generic frameworks which are not balanced, we determine the precise number of solutions to the constraint system whenever the underlying rigidity matroid of the given framework is connected. We also obtain a stress matrix sufficient condition and a Hendrickson type necessary condition for a generic linearly constrained framework to be globally rigid in $\mathbb{R}^d$.
Pairing symmetries for Euclidean and spherical frameworks
In this paper we consider the effect of symmetry on the rigidity of bar-joint frameworks, spherical frameworks and point-hyperplane frameworks in $\mathbb{R}^d$. In particular we show that, under forced or incidental symmetry, infinitesimal rigidity for spherical frameworks with vertices in $X$ on the equator and point-hyperplane frameworks with the vertices in $X$ representing hyperplanes are equivalent. We then show, again under forced or incidental symmetry, that infinitesimal rigidity properties under certain symmetry groups can be paired, or clustered, under inversion on the sphere so that infinitesimal rigidity with a given group is equivalent to infinitesimal rigidity under a paired group. The fundamental basic example is that mirror symmetric rigidity is equivalent to half-turn symmetric rigidity on the 2-sphere. With these results in hand we also deduce some combinatorial consequences for the rigidity of symmetric bar-joint and point-line frameworks.

Rigidity of symmetric frameworks in normed spaces

We develop a combinatorial rigidity theory for symmetric bar-joint frameworks in a general finite dimensional normed space. In the case of rotational symmetry, matroidal Maxwell-type sparsity counts are identified for a large class of $d$-dimensional normed spaces (including all $\ell^p$ spaces with $p\not=2$). Complete combinatorial characterisations are obtained for half-turn rotation in the $\ell^1$ and $\ell^\infty$-plane. As a key tool, a new Henneberg-type inductive construction is developed for the matroidal class of $(2,2,0)$-gain-tight graphs.
Rigidity of linearly-constrained frameworks

We consider the problem of characterising the generic rigidity of bar-joint frameworks in $\mathbb{R}^d$ in which each vertex is constrained to lie in a given affine subspace. The special case when $d=2$ was previously solved by I. Streinu and L. Theran in 2010. We will extend their characterisation to the case when $d\geq 3$ and each vertex is constrained to lie in an affine subspace of dimension $t$, when $t=1,2$ and also when $t\geq 3$ and $d\geq t(t-1)$. We then point out that results on body-bar frameworks obtained by N. Katoh and S. Tanigawa in 2013 can be used to characterise when a graph has a rigid realisation as a $d$-dimensional body-bar framework with a given set of linear constraints.

Double-distance frameworks and mixed sparsity graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A rigidity theory is developed for frameworks in a metric space with two types of distance constraints. Mixed sparsity graph characterisations are obtained for the infinitesimal and continuous rigidity of completely regular bar-joint frameworks in a variety of such contexts. The main results are combinatorial characterisations for (i) frameworks restricted to surfaces with both Euclidean and geodesic distance constraints, (ii) frameworks in the plane with Euclidean and non-Euclidean distance constraints, and (iii) direction-length frameworks in the non-Euclidean plane.
Point-hyperplane frameworks, slider joints, and rigidity preserving transformations

A one-to-one correspondence between the infinitesimal motions of bar-joint frameworks in $\mathbb{R}^d$ and those in $\mathbb{S}^d$ is a classical observation by Pogorelov, and further connections among different rigidity models in various different spaces have been extensively studied. In this paper, we shall extend this line of research to include the infinitesimal rigidity of frameworks consisting of points and hyperplanes. This enables us to understand correspondences between point-hyperplane rigidity, classical bar-joint rigidity, and scene analysis. Among other results, we derive a combinatorial characterization of graphs that can be realized as infinitesimally rigid frameworks in the plane with a given set of points collinear. This extends a result by Jackson and Jordán, which deals with the case when three points are collinear.

Global rigidity of generic frameworks on the cylinder

We show that a generic framework $(G,p)$ on the cylinder is globally rigid if and only if $G$ is a complete graph on at most four vertices or $G$ is both redundantly rigid and $2$-connected. To prove the theorem we also derive a new recursive construction of circuits in the simple $(2,2)$-sparse matroid, and a characterisation of rigidity for generic frameworks on the cylinder when a single designated vertex is allowed to move off the cylinder.
Rigid cylindrical frameworks with two coincident points

We develop a rigidity theory for frameworks in $\mathbb{R}^3$ which have two coincident points but are otherwise generic and only infinitesimal motions which are tangential to a family of cylinders induced by the realisation are considered. We then apply our results to show that vertex splitting, under the additional assumption that the new edge is redundant, preserves the property of being generically globally rigid on families of concentric cylinders.
