The cone of quasi-semimetrics and exponent matrices of tiled orders
Published • View PublicationBIB
Finite quasi semimetrics on $n$ can be thought of as nonnegative valuations on the edges of a complete directed graph on $n$ vertices satisfying all possible triangle inequalities. They comprise a polyhedral cone whose symmetry groups were studied for small $n$ by Deza, Dutour and Panteleeva. We show that the symmetry and combinatorial symmetry groups are as they conjectured. Integral quasi semimetrics have apecial place in the theory of tiled orders, being known as exponent matrices, and can be viewed as monoids under componentwise maximum; we provide a novel derivation of the automorphism group of that monoid. Some of these results follow from more general consideration of polyhedral cones that are closed under componentwise maximum.

Dragging the roots of a polynomial to the unit circle
Several conditions are known for a self-inversive polynomial that ascertain the location of its roots, and we present a framework for comparison of those conditions. We associate a parametric family of polynomials $p_α$ to each such polynomial $p$, and define $\mathscr{cn}(p)$, $\mathscr{il}(p)$ to be the sharp threshold values of $α$ that guarantee that, for all larger values of the parameter, $p_α$ has, respectively, all roots in the unit circle and all roots interlacing the roots of unity of the same degree. Interlacing implies circle rootedness, hence $\mathscr{il}(p)\geq\mathscr{cn}(p)$, and this inequality is often used for showing circle rootedness. Both $\mathscr{cn}(p)$ and $\mathscr{il}(p)$ turn out to be semi-algebraic functions of the coefficients of $p$, and some useful bounds are also presented, entailing several known results about roots in the circle. The study of $\mathscr{il}(p)$ leads to a rich classification of real self-inversive polynomials of each degree, organizing them into a complete polyhedral fan. We have a close look at the class of polynomials for which $\mathscr{il}(p)=\mathscr{cn}(p)$, whereas in general the quotient $\frac{\mathscr{il}(p)}{\mathscr{cn}(p)}$ is shown to be unbounded as the degree grows. Several examples and open questions are presented.
From Monomials to Words to graphs

Given a finite alphabet X and an ordering on the letters, the map σsends each monomial on X to the word that is the ordered product of the letter powers in the monomial. Motivated by a question on Groebner bases, we characterize ideals I in the free commutative monoid (in terms of a generating set) such that the ideal <σ(I)> generated by σ(I) in the free monoid is finitely generated. Whether there exists an ordering such that <σ(I)> is finitely generated turns out to be NP-complete. The latter problem is closely related to the recognition problem for comparability graphs.
