Upper tails and independence polynomials in random graphs
Published in Adv. Math. 319 (2017), 313-347 • View PublicationBIB
The upper tail problem in the Erdős--Rényi random graph $G\sim\mathcal{G}_{n,p}$ asks to estimate the probability that the number of copies of a graph $H$ in $G$ exceeds its expectation by a factor $1+δ$. Chatterjee and Dembo showed that in the sparse regime of $p\to 0$ as $n\to\infty$ with $p \geq n^{-α}$ for an explicit $α=α_H>0$, this problem reduces to a natural variational problem on weighted graphs, which was thereafter asymptotically solved by two of the authors in the case where $H$ is a clique. Here we extend the latter work to any fixed graph $H$ and determine a function $c_H(δ)$ such that, for $p$ as above and any fixed $δ>0$, the upper tail probability is $\exp[-(c_H(δ)+o(1))n^2 p^Δ\log(1/p)]$, where $Δ$ is the maximum degree of $H$. As it turns out, the leading order constant in the large deviation rate function, $c_H(δ)$, is governed by the independence polynomial of $H$, defined as $P_H(x)=\sum i_H(k) x^k $ where $i_H(k)$ is the number of independent sets of size $k$ in $H$. For instance, if $H$ is a regular graph on $m$ vertices, then $c_H(δ)$ is the minimum between $\frac12 δ^{2/m}$ and the unique positive solution of $P_H(x) = 1+δ$.

Degree Sequence of Random Permutation Graphs
Published in Annals of Applied Probability, Vol. 27 (1), 439-484, 2017 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we study the degree sequence of the permutation graph $G_{π_n}$ associated with a sequence $π_n\in S_n$ of random permutations. Joint limiting distributions of the degrees are established using results from graph and permutation limit theories. In particular, for the uniform random permutation, the joint distribution of the degrees of the vertices labelled $\lceil nr_1 \rceil, \lceil nr_2 \rceil, \ldots, \lceil nr_s \rceil$ converges (after scaling by $n$) to independent random variables $D_1, D_2, \ldots, D_s$, where $D_i\sim \text{Unif}(r_i, 1-r_i)$, for $r_i\in [0,1]$ and $i\in \{1, 2, \ldots, s\}$. Moreover, the degree of the mid-vertex (the vertex labelled $n/2$) has a central limit theorem, and the minimum degree converges to a Rayleigh distribution after appropriate scalings. Finally, the limiting degree distribution of the permutation graph associated with a Mallows random permutation is determined, and interesting phase transitions are observed. Our results extend to other exponential measures on permutations.
Almost Empty Monochromatic Triangles in Planar Point Sets

For positive integers $c, s \geq 1$, let $M_3(c, s)$ be the least integer such that any set of at least $M_3(c, s)$ points in the plane, no three on a line and colored with $c$ colors, contains a monochromatic triangle with at most $s$ interior points. The case $s=0$, which corresponds to empty monochromatic triangles, has been studied extensively over the last few years. In particular, it is known that $M_3(1, 0)=3$, $M_3(2, 0)=9$ and $M_3(c, 0)=\infty$, for $c\geq 3$. In this paper we extend these results when $c \geq 2$ and $s \geq 1$. We prove that the least integer $λ_3(c)$ such that $M_3(c, λ_3(c))< \infty$ satisfies: $$\left\lfloor\frac{c-1}{2}\right\rfloor \leqλ_3(c)\leq c-2,$$ where $c \geq 2$. Moreover, the exact values of $M_3(c, s)$ are determined for small values of $c$ and $s$. We also conjecture that $λ_3(4)=1$, and verify it for sufficiently large Horton sets.

Collision Times in Multicolor Urn Models and Sequential Graph Coloring With Applications to Discrete Logarithms
Published • View PublicationBIB
Consider an urn model where at each step one of $q$ colors is sampled according to some probability distribution and a ball of that color is placed in an urn. The distribution of assigning balls to urns may depend on the color of the ball. Collisions occur when a ball is placed in an urn which already contains a ball of different color. Equivalently, this can be viewed as sequentially coloring a complete $q$-partite graph wherein a collision corresponds to the appearance of a monochromatic edge. Using a Poisson embedding technique, the limiting distribution of the first collision time is determined and the possible limits are explicitly described. Joint distribution of successive collision times and multi-fold collision times are also derived. The results can be used to obtain the limiting distributions of running times in various birthday problem based algorithms for solving the discrete logarithm problem, generalizing previous results which only consider expected running times. Asymptotic distributions of the time of appearance of a monochromatic edge are also obtained for other graphs.
Universal Limit Theorems in Graph Coloring Problems With Connections to Extremal Combinatorics
Published in Annals of Applied Probability, Vol. 27 (1), 337-394, 2017 • View PublicationBIB
This paper proves limit theorems for the number of monochromatic edges in uniform random colorings of general random graphs. These can be seen as generalizations of the birthday problem (what is the chance that there are two friends with the same birthday?). It is shown that if the number of colors grows to infinity, the asymptotic distribution is either a Poisson mixture or a Normal depending solely on the limiting behavior of the ratio of the number of edges in the graph and the number of colors. This result holds for any graph sequence, deterministic or random. On the other hand, when the number of colors is fixed, a necessary and sufficient condition for asymptotic normality is determined. Finally, using some results from the emerging theory of dense graph limits, the asymptotic (non-normal) distribution is characterized for any converging sequence of dense graphs. The proofs are based on moment calculations which relate to the results of Erd\H os and Alon on extremal subgraph counts. As a consequence, a simpler proof of a result of Alon, estimating the number of isomorphic copies of a cycle of given length in graphs with a fixed number of edges, is presented.

Exact and Asymptotic Results on Coarse Ricci Curvature of Graphs

Ricci curvature was proposed by Ollivier in a general framework of metric measure spaces, and it has been studied extensively in the context of graphs in recent years. In this paper we prove upper bounds for Ollivier's Ricci curvature for bipartite graphs and for the graphs with girth at least 5. We also prove a general lower bound on the Ricci curvature in terms of the size of the maximum matching in an appropriate subgraph. As a consequence, we characterize the Ricci-flat graphs of girth 5. Moreover, using our general lower bound and the Birkhoff-von Neumann theorem, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for the structure of Ricci-flat regular graphs of girth 4. Finally, we obtain the asymptotic Ricci curvature of random bipartite graphs $G(n,n, p)$ and random graphs $G(n, p)$, in various regimes of $p$.
Minimum-Weight Edge Discriminator in Hypergraphs
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, Vol. 21(3), #P3.18, 2014 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we introduce the concept of minimum-weight edge-discriminators in hypergraphs, and study its various properties. For a hypergraph $\mathcal H=(\mathcal V, \mathcal E)$, a function $λ: \mathcal V\rightarrow \mathbb Z^{+}\cup\{0\}$ is said to be an {\it edge-discriminator} on $\mathcal H$ if $\sum_{v\in E_i}{λ(v)}>0$, for all hyperedges $E_i\in \mathcal E$, and $\sum_{v\in E_i}{λ(v)}\ne \sum_{v\in E_j}{λ(v)}$, for every two distinct hyperedges $E_i, E_j \in \mathcal E$. An {\it optimal edge-discriminator} on $\mathcal H$, to be denoted by $λ_\mathcal H$, is an edge-discriminator on $\mathcal H$ satisfying $\sum_{v\in \mathcal V}λ_\mathcal H (v)=\min_λ\sum_{v\in \mathcal V}{λ(v)}$, where the minimum is taken over all edge-discriminators on $\mathcal H$. We prove that any hypergraph $\mathcal H=(\mathcal V, \mathcal E)$, with $|\mathcal E|=n$, satisfies $\sum_{v\in \mathcal V} λ_\mathcal H(v)\leq n(n+1)/2$, and equality holds if and only if the elements of $\mathcal E$ are mutually disjoint. For $r$-uniform hypergraphs $\mathcal H=(\mathcal V, \mathcal E)$, it follows from results on Sidon sequences that $\sum_{v\in \mathcal V}λ_{\mathcal H}(v)\leq |\mathcal V|^{r+1}+o(|\mathcal V|^{r+1})$, and the bound is attained up to a constant factor by the complete $r$-uniform hypergraph. Next, we construct optimal edge-discriminators for some special hypergraphs, which include paths, cycles, and complete $r$-partite hypergraphs. Finally, we show that no optimal edge-discriminator on any hypergraph $\mathcal H=(\mathcal V, \mathcal E)$, with $|\mathcal E|=n (\geq 3)$, satisfies $\sum_{v\in \mathcal V} λ_\mathcal H (v)=n(n+1)/2-1$, which, in turn, raises many other interesting combinatorial questions.

Disjoint Empty Convex Pentagons in Planar Point Sets
Published in Periodica Mathematica Hungarica, Vol. 66 (1), 73-86, 2013 • View PublicationBIB
Harborth [{\it Elemente der Mathematik}, Vol. 33 (5), 116--118, 1978] proved that every set of 10 points in the plane, no three on a line, contains an empty convex pentagon. From this it follows that the number of disjoint empty convex pentagons in any set of $n$ points in the plane is least $\lfloor\frac{n}{10}\rfloor$. In this paper we prove that every set of 19 points in the plane, no three on a line, contains two disjoint empty convex pentagons. We also show that any set of $2m+9$ points in the plane, where $m$ is a positive integer, can be subdivided into three disjoint convex regions, two of which contains $m$ points each, and another contains a set of 9 points containing an empty convex pentagon. Combining these two results, we obtain non-trivial lower bounds on the number of disjoint empty convex pentagons in planar points sets. We show that the number of disjoint empty convex pentagons in any set of $n$ points in the plane, no three on a line, is at least $\lfloor\frac{5n}{47}\rfloor$. This bound has been further improved to $\frac{3n-1}{28}$ for infinitely many $n$.

On Pseudo-Convex Partitions of a Planar Point Set
Published in Discrete Mathematics, Vol. 313 (21), 2401-2408, 2013 • View PublicationBIB
Aichholzer et al. [{\it Graphs and Combinatorics}, Vol. 23, 481-507, 2007] introduced the notion of pseudo-convex partitioning of planar point sets and proved that the pseudo-convex partition number $ψ(n)$ satisfies, $\frac{3}{4}\lfloor\frac{n}{4}\rfloor\leq ψ(n)\leq\lceil\frac{n}{4}\rceil$. In this paper we prove that $ψ(13)=3$, which immediately improves the upper bound on $ψ(n)$ to $\lceil\frac{3n}{13}\rceil$, thus answering a question posed by Aichholzer et al. in the same paper.

Holes or Empty Pseudo-Triangles in Planar Point Sets
Published in Moscow Journal of Combinatorics and Number Theory, 16-46, Vol. 2 (1), 2012 • Search Publication
Let $E(k, \ell)$ denote the smallest integer such that any set of at least $E(k, \ell)$ points in the plane, no three on a line, contains either an empty convex polygon with $k$ vertices or an empty pseudo-triangle with $\ell$ vertices. The existence of $E(k, \ell)$ for positive integers $k, \ell\geq 3$, is the consequence of a result proved by Valtr [Discrete and Computational Geometry, Vol. 37, 565--576, 2007]. In this paper, following a series of new results about the existence of empty pseudo-triangles in point sets with triangular convex hulls, we determine the exact values of $E(k, 5)$ and $E(5, \ell)$, and prove bounds on $E(k, 6)$ and $E(6, \ell)$, for $k, \ell\geq 3$. By dropping the emptiness condition, we define another related quantity $F(k, \ell)$, which is the smallest integer such that any set of at least $F(k, \ell)$ points in the plane, no three on a line, contains a convex polygon with $k$ vertices or a pseudo-triangle with $\ell$ vertices. Extending a result of Bisztriczky and Tóth [Discrete Geometry, Marcel Dekker, 49--58, 2003], we obtain the exact values of $F(k, 5)$ and $F(k, 6)$, and obtain non-trivial bounds on $F(k, 7)$.
