Improved Lower Bound for Frankl's Union-Closed Sets Conjecture
Published • View PublicationBIB
We verify an explicit inequality conjectured recently by Gilmer, thus proving that for any nonempty union-closed family $F \subseteq 2^{[n]}$, some $i\in [n]$ is contained in at least a $\frac{3-\sqrt{5}}{2} \approx 0.38$ fraction of the sets in $F$. One case, an explicit one-variable inequality, is checked by computer calculation.

An Upper Bound on the Number of $(132,213)$-Avoiding Cyclic Permutations
Published in Discrete Math. 342(6) (2019), 1762-1771 • View PublicationBIB
We show a $n^2 \cdot 2^{n/2}$ upper bound on the number of $(132,213)$ avoiding cyclic permutations. This is the first nontrivial upper bound on the number of such permutations. We also construct an algorithm to determine whether a $(132,213)$ avoiding permutation is cyclic that references only the permutation's layer lengths.

Cyclic Descents for General Skew Tableaux
Published in J. Combin. Theory, Ser. A 169 (2020), 105120 • View PublicationBIB
A cyclic descent function on standard Young tableaux of size $n$ is a function that restricts to the usual descent function when $n$ is omitted, such that the number of standard Young tableaux of given shape with cyclic descent set $D\subset[n]$ is invariant under any modulo $n$ shift of $D$. The notion of cyclic descent was first studied for rectangles by Rhoades, and then generalized to certain families of skew shapes by Adin, Elizalde, and Roichman. Adin, Reiner, and Roichman proved that a skew shape has a cyclic descent map if and only if it is not a connected ribbon. Unfortunately, their proof is nonconstructive; until now, explicit cyclic descent maps are known only for small families of shapes. In this paper, we construct an explicit cyclic descent map for all shapes where this is possible. We thus provide a constructive proof of Adin, Reiner, and Roichman's result. Our construction of a cyclic descent map generalizes many of the constructions in the literature.

On the Local Geometry of Graphs in Terms of Their Spectra
Published in European J. Combin. 81 (2019) 378-393 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we consider the relation between the spectrum and the number of short cycles in large graphs. Suppose $G_1, G_2, G_3, \ldots$ is a sequence of finite and connected graphs that share a common universal cover $T$ and such that the proportion of eigenvalues of $G_n$ that lie within the support of the spectrum of $T$ tends to 1 in the large $n$ limit. This is a weak notion of being Ramanujan. We prove such a sequence of graphs is asymptotically locally tree-like. This is deduced by way of an analogous theorem proved for certain infinite sofic graphs and unimodular networks, which extends results for regular graphs and certain infinite Cayley graphs.
