Flag Space, Matroidal Schur Algebras and the Steinberg Representation
We define via generators and relations an extended version of the matroidal Schur algebras introduced in earlier work of the author with Tom Braden. In the case of projective geometries, we relate the representation theory of the resulting algebras to the structure of the modular Steinberg representation of $GL(n,q)$. In the general case we show that the extended matroidal Schur algebras have a triangular, or Reedy, decomposition and are thus quasi-hereditary. We also obtain a new description of the original matroidal Schur algebras and clarify the connection to the flag spaces of Brylawski--Varchenko.
An Intersection Matrix for Affine Hyperplane Arrangements
For a real affine hyperplane arrangement, we define an integer intersection matrix with a natural $q$-deformation related to the intersections of bounded chambers of the arrangement. By connecting the integer matrix to a bilinear form of Schechtman-Varchenko, we show that there is a closed formula for its determinant that only depends on the combinatorics of the underlying matroid. We conjecture an analogous formula for its $q$-deformation. Our work also applies more generally in the setting of affine oriented matroids.
Additionally, we give a representation-theoretic interpretation of our $q$-intersection matrix using Braden-Licata-Proudfoot-Websters's hypertoric category $\mathcal{O}$ (or more generally Kowalenko-Mautner's category $\mathcal{O}$ for oriented matroid programs). This paper is part of a broader program to categorify matroidal Schur algebras defined by Braden-Mautner.

We associate to a sufficiently generic oriented matroid program and choice of linear system of parameters a finite dimensional algebra, whose representation theory is analogous to blocks of Bernstein--Gelfand--Gelfand category $\mathcal O$. When the data above comes from a generic linear program for a hyperplane arrangement, we recover the algebra defined by Braden--Licata--Proudfoot--Webster.
Applying our construction to nonlinear oriented matroid programs provides a large new class of algebras. For Euclidean oriented matroid programs, the resulting algebras are quasi-hereditary and Koszul, as in the linear setting. In the non-Euclidean case, we obtain algebras that are not quasi-hereditary and not known to be Koszul, but still have a natural class of standard modules and satisfy numerical analogues of quasi-heredity and Koszulity on the level of graded Grothendieck groups.

Fix a principal ideal domain $k$. In this article we associate to a (weighted) matroid $M$ a quasi-hereditary algebra $R(M)$ defined over $k$ such that matroid duality corresponds to Ringel duality of quasi-hereditary algebras. The representation theory of these algebras is related to work of Schechtman-Varchenko and Brylawski-Varchenko. In characteristic zero, our algebras are also closely related to work of Kook-Reiner-Stanton and Denham.
