The integer $\{2\}$-domination number of grids
For positive integers $m$ and $n$, the grid graph $G_{m,n}$ is the Cartesian product of the path graph $P_m$ on $m$ vertices and the path graph $P_n$ on $n$ vertices. An integer $\{2\}$-dominating function of a graph is a mapping from the vertex set to $\{0,1,2\}$ such that the sum of the mapped values of each vertex and its neighbors is at least $2$; the integer $\{2\}$-domination number of a graph is defined to be the minimum sum of mapped values of all vertices among all integer $\{2\}$-dominating functions. In this paper, we compute the integer $\{2\}$-domination numbers of $G_{1,n}$ and $G_{2,n}$, attain an upper bound to the integer $\{2\}$-domination numbers of $G_{3,n}$, and propose an algorithm to count the integer $\{2\}$-domination numbers of $G_{m,n}$ for arbitrary $m$ and $n$. As a future work, we list the integer $\{2\}$-domination numbers of $G_{4,n}$ for small $n$, and conjecture on its formula.

Counterexamples of the Bhattacharya-Friedland-Peled conjecture
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Brauldi-Hoffman conjecture, proved by Rowlinson in 1988, characterized the graph with maximal spectral radius among all simple graphs with prescribed number of edges. In 2008, Bhattacharya, Friedland, and Peled proposed an analog, which will be called the BFP conjecture in the following, of the Brauldi-Hoffman conjecture for the bipartite graphs with fixed numbers of edges in the graph and vertices in the bipartition. The BFP conjecture was proved to be correct if the number of edges is large enough by several authors. However, in this paper we provide some counterexamples of the BFP conjecture.
Ramsey Properties for $V$-shaped Posets in the Boolean Lattices
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given posets $\mathbf{P}_1,\mathbf{P}_2,\ldots,\mathbf{P}_k$, let the {\em Boolean Ramsey number} $R(\mathbf{P}_1,\mathbf{P}_2,\ldots,\mathbf{P}_k)$ be the minimum number $n$ such that no matter how we color the elements in the Boolean lattice $\mathbf{B}_n$ with $k$ colors, there always exists a poset $\mathbf{P}_i$ contained in $\mathbf{B}_n$ whose elements are all colored with $i$. This function was first introduced by Axenovich and Walzer~\cite{AW}. Recently, many results on determining $R(\mathbf{B}_m,\mathbf{B}_n)$ have been published. In this paper, we will study the function $R(\mathbf{P}_1,\mathbf{P}_2,\ldots,\mathbf{P}_k)$ for each $\mathbf{P}_i$'s being the $V$-shaped poset. That is, a poset obtained by identifying the minimal elements of two chains. Another major result presented in the paper is to determine the minimal posets $\mathbf{Q}$ contained in $\mathbf{B}_n$, when $R(\mathbf{P}_1,\mathbf{P}_2,\ldots,\mathbf{P}_k)=n$ is determined, having the Ramsey property described in the previous paragraph. In addition, we define the {\em Boolean rainbow Ramsey number} $RR(\mathbf{P},\mathbf{Q})$ the minimum number $n$ such that when arbitrarily coloring the elements in $\mathbf{B}_n$, there always exists either a monochromatic $\mathbf{P}$ or a rainbow $\mathbf{Q}$ contained in $\mathbf{B}_n$. The upper bound for $RR(\mathbf{P},\mathbf{A}_k)$ was given by Chang, Li, Gerbner, Methuku, Nagy, Patkos, and Vizer for general poset $\mathbf{P}$ and $k$-element antichain $\mathbf{A}_k$. We study the function for $\mathbf{P}$ being the $V$-shaped posets in this paper as well.

Domination in the Sierpiński graphs S(K_n,t)
Published • View PublicationBIB
Different types of domination on the Sierpiński graphs S(K_n,t) will be studied in this paper. More precisely, we propose a minimal dominating set for S(K_n,t) so that the exact values of their domination numbers, Roman domination numbers, and double Roman domination numbers are given. As applications, some previous bounds and results are confirmed to be tight and further generalized.
The Boolean Rainbow Ramsey Number of Antichains, Boolean Posets, and Chains
Published • View PublicationBIB
Motivated by the paper of Axenovich and Walzer [2], we study the Ramsey-type problems on the Boolean lattices. Given posets $P$ and $Q$, we look for the smallest Boolean lattice $\mathcal{B}_N$ such that any coloring on elements of $\mathcal{B}_N$ must contain a monochromatic $P$ or a rainbow $Q$. This number $N$ is called the Boolean rainbow Ramsey number of $P$ and $Q$ in the paper. Particularly, we determine the exact values of the Boolean rainbow Ramsey number for $P$ and $Q$ being the antichains, the Boolean posets, or the chains. From these results, we also give some general upper and lower bounds of the Boolean rainbow Ramsey number for general $P$ and $Q$ in terms of the poset parameters.

On the integer {k}-domination number of circulant graphs
Let $G=(V,E)$ be a simple undirected graph. $G$ is a circulant graph defined on $V=\mathbb{Z}_n$ with difference set $D\subseteq \{1,2,\ldots,\lfloor\frac{n}{2}\rfloor\}$ provided two vertices $i$ and $j$ in $\mathbb{Z}_n$ are adjacent if and only if $\min\{|i-j|, n-|i-j|\}\in D$. For convenience, we use $G(n;D)$ to denote such a circulant graph. A function $f:V(G)\rightarrow\mathbb{N}\cup\{0\}$ is an integer $\{k\}$-domination function if for each $v\in V(G)$, $\sum_{u\in N_G[v]}f(u)\geq k.$ By considering all $\{k\}$-domination functions $f$, the minimum value of $\sum_{v\in V(G)}f(v)$ is the $\{k\}$-domination number of $G$, denoted by $γ_k(G)$. In this paper, we prove that if $D=\{1,2,\ldots,t\}$, $1\leq t\leq \frac{n-1}{2}$, then the integer $\{k\}$-domination number of $G(n;D)$ is $\lceil\frac{kn}{2t+1}\rceil$.

On the degree pairs of a graph
Let G be a simple graph without isolated vertices. For a vertex i in G, the degree d_i is the number of vertices adjacent to i and the average 2-degree m_i is the mean of the degrees of the vertices which are adjacent to i. The sequence of pairs (d_i, m_i) is called the sequence of degree pairs of G. We provide some necessary conditions for a sequence of real pairs (a_i, b_i) of length n to be the degree pairs of a graph of order n. A graph G is called pseudo k-regular if m_i=k for every vertex i while d_i is not a constant. Let N(k) denote the minimum number of vertices in a pseudo k-regular graph. We utilize the above necessary conditions to find all pseudo 3-regular graphs of orders no more than 10, and all pseudo $k$-regular graphs of order N(k) for k up to 7. We give bounds of N(k) and show that N(k) is at most k+6.

A family of group divisible designs with arbitrary block sizes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Recently, a construction of group divisible designs (GDDs) derived from the decoding of quadratic residue (QR) codes was given. In this paper, we extend the idea to obtain a new family of GDDs, which is also involved with a well-known balanced incomplete block design (BIBD).

Degrees of irreducible polynomials over binary field
An algorithm for factoring polynomials over finite fields is given by Berlekamp in 1967. The main tool was the matrix Q corresponding to each polynomial. This paper studies the degrees of polynomials over binary field that associated with their corresponding matrices Q and irreducibility.

A construction of group divisible designs with zero block sum
This paper gives a construction of group divisible designs on the binary extension fields with block sizes 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7, respectively, which is motivated from the decoding of binary quadratic residue codes. A conjecture is proposed for this construction of group divisible designs with larger block sizes.

Spectral characterizations of two families of nearly complete bipartite graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
It is not hard to find many complete bipartite graphs which are not determined by their spectra. We show that the graph obtained by deleting an edge from a complete bipartite graph is determined by its spectrum. We provide some graphs, each of which is obtained from a complete bipartite graph by adding a vertex and an edge incident on the new vertex and an original vertex, which are not determined by their spectra.

A (forgotten) upper bound for the spectral radius of a graph
Published • View PublicationBIB
The best degree-based upper bound for the spectral radius is due to Liu and Weng. This paper begins by demonstrating that a (forgotten) upper bound for the spectral radius dating from 1983 is equivalent to their much more recent bound. This bound is then used to compare lower bounds for the clique number. A series of sharp upper bounds for the signless Laplacian spectral radius is then proposed as another application. Finally a new lower bound for generalised r-partite graphs is proved, by extending a result due to Erdos.

Spectral Radius of Bipartite Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let k, p, q be positive integers with k < p < q+1. We prove that the maximum spectral radius of a simple bipartite graph obtained from the complete bipartite graph Kp,q of bipartition orders p and q by deleting k edges is attained when the deleting edges are all incident on a common vertex which is located in the partite set of order q. Our method is based on new sharp upper bounds on the spectral radius of bipartite graphs in terms of their degree sequences.

Spectral Radius and Degree Sequence of a Graph
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let G be a simple connected graph of order n with degree sequence d_1, d_2, ..., d_n in non-increasing order. The spectral radius rho(G) of G is the largest eigenvalue of its adjacency matrix. For each positive integer L at most n, we give a sharp upper bound for rho(G) by a function of d_1, d_2, ..., d_L, which generalizes a series of previous results.
