Plane partitions II: 5 1/2 symmetry classes
Published in in: "Combinatorial Methods in Representation Theory," M. Kashiwara, K. Koike, S. Okada, I. Terada, H. Yamada, eds., Advanced Studies in Pure Mathematics, vol. 28, RIMS, Kyoto, 2000, pp. 83-103 • View PublicationBIB
We present new, simple proofs for the enumeration of five of the ten symmetry classes of plane partitions contained in a given box. Four of them are derived from a simple determinant evaluation, using combinatorial arguments. The previous proofs of these four cases were quite complicated. For one more symmetry class we give an elementary proof in the case when two of the sides of the box are equal. Our results include simple evaluations of the determinants $\det(δ_{ij}+{x+i+j\choose i})_{0\leq i,j\leq n-1}$ and $\det({x+i+j\choose 2j-i})_{0\leq i,j\leq n-1}$, notorious in plane partition enumeration, whose previous evaluations were quite intricate.

Another involution principle-free bijective proof of Stanley's hook-content formula
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 88 (1999), 66-92 • View PublicationBIB
Another bijective proof of Stanley's hook-content formula for the generating function for semistandard tableaux of a given shape is given that does not involve the involution principle of Garsia and Milne. It is the result of a merge of the modified jeu de taquin idea from the author's previous bijective proof (``An involution principle-free bijective proof of Stanley's hook-content formula", Discrete Math. Theoret. Computer Science, to appear) and the Novelli-Pak-Stoyanovskii bijection (Discrete Math. Theoret. Computer Science 1 (1997), 53-67) for the hook formula for standard Young tableaux of a given shape. This new algorithm can also be used as an algorithm for the random generation of tableaux of a given shape with bounded entries. An appropriate deformation of this algorithm gives an algorithm for the random generation of plane partitions inside a given box.
Gauss Sums, Jacobi Sums, and $p$-ranks of Cyclic Difference Sets
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 87 (1999), 174-219 • View PublicationBIB
We study quadratic residue difference sets, GMW difference sets, and difference sets arising from monomial hyperovals, all of which are $(2^d-1, 2^{d-1}-1, 2^{d-2}-1)$ cyclic difference sets in the multiplicative group of the finite field $F_{2^d}$ of $2^d$ elements, with $d \geq 2$. We show that, except for a few cases with small $d$, these difference sets are all pairwise inequivalent. This is accomplished in part by examining their 2-ranks. The 2-ranks of all of these difference sets were previously known, except for those connected with the Segre and Glynn hyperovals. We determine the 2-ranks of the difference sets arising from the Segre and Glynn hyperovals, in the following way. Stickelberger's theorem for Gauss sums is used to reduce the computation of these 2-ranks to a problem of counting certain cyclic binary strings of length $d$. This counting problem is then solved combinatorially, with the aid of the transfer matrix method. We give further applications of the 2-rank formulas, including the determination of the nonzeros of certain binary cyclic codes, and a criterion in terms of the trace function to decide for which $β$ in $F_{2^d}^*$ the polynomial $x^6 + x + β$ has a zero in $F_{2^d}$, when $d$ is odd.

Proof of a determinant evaluation conjectured by Bombieri, Hunt and van der Poorten
Published in New York Journal of Mathematics 3(1997), 54-102 • Search Publication
A determinant evaluation is proven, a special case of which establishes a conjecture of Bombieri, Hunt, and van der Poorten (Experimental Math\. {\bf 4} (1995), 87--96) that arose in the study of Thue's method of approximating algebraic numbers.

The number of rhombus tilings of a symmetric hexagon which contain a fixed rhombus on the symmetry axis, I
Published in Ann. Combin. 2 1998, 19-40 • View PublicationBIB
We compute the number of rhombus tilings of a hexagon with sides $N,M,N,N,M,N$, which contain a fixed rhombus on the symmetry axis that cuts through the sides of length $M$.
Enumeration of rhombus tilings of a hexagon which contain a fixed rhombus on its symmetry axis
We compute the number of rhombus tilings of a hexagon with sides $N,M,N,N,M,N$, which contain a fixed rhombus on the symmetry axis. A special case solves a problem posed by Jim Propp.

Determinant identities and a generalization of the number of totally symmetric self-complementary plane partitions
Published in Electron. J. Combin. 4 (No. 1) (1997), #R27 • View PublicationBIB
We prove a constant term conjecture of Robbins and Zeilberger (J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 66 (1994), 17-27), by translating the problem into a determinant evaluation problem and evaluating the determinant. This determinant generalizes the determinant that gives the number of all totally symmetric self-complementary plane partitions contained in a $(2n)\times(2n)\times(2n)$ box and that was used by Andrews (J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 66 (1994), 28-39) and Andrews and Burge (Pacific J. Math. 158 (1993), 1-14) to compute this number explicitly. The evaluation of the generalized determinant is independent of Andrews and Burge's computations, and therefore in particular constitutes a new solution to this famous enumeration problem. We also evaluate a related determinant, thus generalizing another determinant identity of Andrews and Burge (loc. cit.). By translating some of our determinant identities into constant term identities, we obtain several new constant term identities.

Schur function identities and the number of perfect matchings of holey Aztec rectangles
Published in in: "q-Series from a Contemporary Perspective," M. E. H. Ismail, D. Stanton, eds., Contemporary Math., vol. 254, Amer. Math. Soc., Providence, R.I., 2000, pp. 335-350. • View PublicationBIB
We compute the number of perfect matchings of an $M\times N$ Aztec rectangle where $|N-M|$ vertices have been removed along a line. A particular case solves a problem posed by Propp. Our enumeration results follow from certain identities for Schur functions, which are established by the combinatorics of nonintersecting lattice paths.

The number of rhombus tilings of a "punctured" hexagon and the minor summation formula
Published in Adv. Appl. Math. 21 1998, 381-404 • View PublicationBIB
We compute the number of all rhombus tilings of a hexagon with sides $a,b+1,c,a+1,b,c+1$, of which the central triangle is removed, provided $a,b,c$ have the same parity. The result is a product of four numbers, each of which counts the number of plane partitions inside a given box. The proof uses nonintersecting lattice paths and a new identity for Schur functions, which is proved by means of the minor summation formula of Ishikawa and Wakayama. A symmetric generalization of this identity is stated as a conjecture.
