Hypergraph Colouring and Degeneracy
A hypergraph is "$d$-degenerate" if every subhypergraph has a vertex of degree at most $d$. A greedy algorithm colours every such hypergraph with at most $d+1$ colours. We show that this bound is tight, by constructing an $r$-uniform $d$-degenerate hypergraph with chromatic number $d+1$ for all $r\geq2$ and $d\geq1$. Moreover, the hypergraph is triangle-free, where a "triangle" in an $r$-uniform hypergraph consists of three edges whose union is a set of $r+1$ vertices.

Circumference and Pathwidth of Highly Connected Graphs
Published in J. Graph Theory 79.3:222-232, 2015 • View PublicationBIB
Birmele [J. Graph Theory, 2003] proved that every graph with circumference t has treewidth at most t-1. Under the additional assumption of 2-connectivity, such graphs have bounded pathwidth, which is a qualitatively stronger result. Birmele's theorem was extended by Birmele, Bondy and Reed [Combinatorica, 2007] who showed that every graph without k disjoint cycles of length at least t has bounded treewidth (as a function of k and t). Our main result states that, under the additional assumption of (k + 1)- connectivity, such graphs have bounded pathwidth. In fact, they have pathwidth O(t^3 + tk^2). Moreover, examples show that (k + 1)-connectivity is required for bounded pathwidth to hold. These results suggest the following general question: for which values of k and graphs H does every k-connected H-minor-free graph have bounded pathwidth? We discuss this question and provide a few observations.

The degree-diameter problem for sparse graph classes
Published in Electronic J. Combinatorics 22:2.46, 2015 • View PublicationBIB
The degree-diameter problem asks for the maximum number of vertices in a graph with maximum degree $Δ$ and diameter $k$. For fixed $k$, the answer is $Θ(Δ^k)$. We consider the degree-diameter problem for particular classes of sparse graphs, and establish the following results. For graphs of bounded average degree the answer is $Θ(Δ^{k-1})$, and for graphs of bounded arboricity the answer is $Θ(Δ^{\floor{k/2}})$, in both cases for fixed $k$. For graphs of given treewidth, we determine the the maximum number of vertices up to a constant factor. More precise bounds are given for graphs of given treewidth, graphs embeddable on a given surface, and apex-minor-free graphs.

Layered Separators in Minor-Closed Graph Classes with Applications
Published in J. Combinatorial Theory Series B 127:111-147, 2017 • View PublicationBIB
Graph separators are a ubiquitous tool in graph theory and computer science. However, in some applications, their usefulness is limited by the fact that the separator can be as large as $Ω(\sqrt{n})$ in graphs with $n$ vertices. This is the case for planar graphs, and more generally, for proper minor-closed classes. We study a special type of graph separator, called a "layered separator", which may have linear size in $n$, but has bounded size with respect to a different measure, called the "width". We prove, for example, that planar graphs and graphs of bounded Euler genus admit layered separators of bounded width. More generally, we characterise the minor-closed classes that admit layered separators of bounded width as those that exclude a fixed apex graph as a minor. We use layered separators to prove $\mathcal{O}(\log n)$ bounds for a number of problems where $\mathcal{O}(\sqrt{n})$ was a long-standing previous best bound. This includes the nonrepetitive chromatic number and queue-number of graphs with bounded Euler genus. We extend these results with a $\mathcal{O}(\log n)$ bound on the nonrepetitive chromatic number of graphs excluding a fixed topological minor, and a $\log^{ \mathcal{O}(1)}n$ bound on the queue-number of graphs excluding a fixed minor. Only for planar graphs were $\log^{ \mathcal{O}(1)}n$ bounds previously known. Our results imply that every $n$-vertex graph excluding a fixed minor has a 3-dimensional grid drawing with $n\log^{ \mathcal{O}(1)}n$ volume, whereas the previous best bound was $\mathcal{O}(n^{3/2})$.

A Note on Hadwiger's Conjecture
Hadwiger's Conjecture states that every $K_{t+1}$-minor-free graph is $t$-colourable. It is widely considered to be one of the most important conjectures in graph theory. If every $K_{t+1}$-minor-free graph has minimum degree at most $δ$, then every $K_{t+1}$-minor-free graph is $(δ+1)$-colourable by a minimum-degree-greedy algorithm. The purpose of this note is to prove a slightly better upper bound.

Treewidth of the Line Graph of Complete and Complete Multipartite Graphs
In recent papers by Grohe and Marx, the treewidth of the line graph of the complete graph is a critical example. We determine the exact treewidth of the line graph of the complete graph. By extending these techniques, we determine the exact treewidth of the line graph of a regular complete multipartite graph. For an arbitrary complete multipartite graph, we determine the treewidth of the line graph up to a lower order term.

On the general position subset selection problem
Published in SIAM J. Discrete Math. 27:1727-1733, 2013 • View PublicationBIB
Let $f(n,\ell)$ be the maximum integer such that every set of $n$ points in the plane with at most $\ell$ collinear contains a subset of $f(n,\ell)$ points with no three collinear. First we prove that if $\ell \leq O(\sqrt{n})$ then $f(n,\ell)\geq Ω(\sqrt{\frac{n}{\ln \ell}})$. Second we prove that if $\ell \leq O(n^{(1-ε)/2})$ then $f(n,\ell) \geq Ω(\sqrt{n\log_\ell n})$, which implies all previously known lower bounds on $f(n,\ell)$ and improves them when $\ell$ is not fixed. A more general problem is to consider subsets with at most $k$ collinear points in a point set with at most $\ell$ collinear. We also prove analogous results in this setting.

Progress on Dirac's Conjecture
Published in Electronic J. Combinatorics 21.2:P2.12, 2014 • View PublicationBIB
In 1951, Gabriel Dirac conjectured that every set P of n non-collinear points in the plane contains a point in at least n/2-c lines determined by P, for some constant c. The following weakening was proved by Beck and Szemerédi-Trotter: every set P of n non-collinear points contains a point in at least n/c lines determined by P, for some large unspecified constant c. We prove that every set P of n non-collinear points contains a point in at least n/37 lines determined by P. We also give the best known constant for Beck's Theorem, proving that every set of n points with at most k collinear determines at least n(n-k)/98 lines.
Empty pentagons in point sets with collinearities
Published in SIAM J. Discrete Math. 29-1 (2015), pp. 198-209 • View PublicationBIB
An empty pentagon in a point set P in the plane is a set of five points in P in strictly convex position with no other point of P in their convex hull. We prove that every finite set of at least 328k^2 points in the plane contains an empty pentagon or k collinear points. This is optimal up to a constant factor since the (k-1)x(k-1) grid contains no empty pentagon and no k collinear points. The previous best known bound was doubly exponential.

Excluded Forest Minors and the Erdős-Pósa Property
Published in Combinatorics, Probability, and Computing, 22/5:700--721, 2013 • View PublicationBIB
A classical result of Robertson and Seymour states that the set of graphs containing a fixed planar graph $H$ as a minor has the so-called Erdős-Pósa property; namely, there exists a function $f$ depending only on $H$ such that, for every graph $G$ and every positive integer $k$, the graph $G$ has $k$ vertex-disjoint subgraphs each containing $H$ as a minor, or there exists a subset $X$ of vertices of $G$ with $|X| \leq f(k)$ such that $G - X$ has no $H$-minor. While the best function $f$ currently known is exponential in $k$, a $O(k \log k)$ bound is known in the special case where $H$ is a forest. This is a consequence of a theorem of Bienstock, Robertson, Seymour, and Thomas on the pathwidth of graphs with an excluded forest-minor. In this paper we show that the function $f$ can be taken to be linear when $H$ is a forest. This is best possible in the sense that no linear bound is possible if $H$ has a cycle.

Which point sets admit a k-angulation?
For k >= 3, a k-angulation is a 2-connected plane graph in which every internal face is a k-gon. We say that a point set P admits a plane graph G if there is a straight-line drawing of G that maps V(G) onto P and has the same facial cycles and outer face as G. We investigate the conditions under which a point set P admits a k-angulation and find that, for sets containing at least 2k^2 points, the only obstructions are those that follow from Euler's formula.
A linear-time algorithm for finding a complete graph minor in a dense graph
Published in SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics, 27/4:1770--1774, 2013 • View PublicationBIB
Let g(t) be the minimum number such that every graph G with average degree d(G) \geq g(t) contains a K_{t}-minor. Such a function is known to exist, as originally shown by Mader. Kostochka and Thomason independently proved that g(t) \in Θ(t*sqrt{log t}). This article shows that for all fixed ε> 0 and fixed sufficiently large t \geq t(ε), if d(G) \geq (2+ε)g(t) then we can find this K_{t}-minor in linear time. This improves a previous result by Reed and Wood who gave a linear-time algorithm when d(G) \geq 2^{t-2}.
Nonrepetitive Colourings of Planar Graphs with $O(\log n)$ Colours
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, 20/1:P51, 2013 • View PublicationBIB
A vertex colouring of a graph is \emph{nonrepetitive} if there is no path for which the first half of the path is assigned the same sequence of colours as the second half. The \emph{nonrepetitive chromatic number} of a graph $G$ is the minimum integer $k$ such that $G$ has a nonrepetitive $k$-colouring. Whether planar graphs have bounded nonrepetitive chromatic number is one of the most important open problems in the field. Despite this, the best known upper bound is $O(\sqrt{n})$ for $n$-vertex planar graphs. We prove a $O(\log n)$ upper bound.
Nonrepetitive Colouring via Entropy Compression
Published in Combinatorica, 36/6:661--686, 2016 • View PublicationBIB
A vertex colouring of a graph is \emph{nonrepetitive} if there is no path whose first half receives the same sequence of colours as the second half. A graph is nonrepetitively $k$-choosable if given lists of at least $k$ colours at each vertex, there is a nonrepetitive colouring such that each vertex is coloured from its own list. It is known that every graph with maximum degree $Δ$ is $cΔ^2$-choosable, for some constant $c$. We prove this result with $c=1$ (ignoring lower order terms). We then prove that every subdivision of a graph with sufficiently many division vertices per edge is nonrepetitively 5-choosable. The proofs of both these results are based on the Moser-Tardos entropy-compression method, and a recent extension by Grytczuk, Kozik and Micek for the nonrepetitive choosability of paths. Finally, we prove that every graph with pathwidth $k$ is nonrepetitively $O(k^{2})$-colourable.

An Improved Bound for First-Fit on Posets Without Two Long Incomparable Chains
Published in SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics, 26/3:1068--1075, 2012 • View PublicationBIB
It is known that the First-Fit algorithm for partitioning a poset P into chains uses relatively few chains when P does not have two incomparable chains each of size k. In particular, if P has width w then Bosek, Krawczyk, and Szczypka (SIAM J. Discrete Math., 23(4):1992--1999, 2010) proved an upper bound of ckw^{2} on the number of chains used by First-Fit for some constant c, while Joret and Milans (Order, 28(3):455--464, 2011) gave one of ck^{2}w. In this paper we prove an upper bound of the form ckw. This is best possible up to the value of c.

Disproof of the List Hadwiger Conjecture
Published in Electronic J. Combinatorics 18:P232, 2011 • View PublicationBIB
The List Hadwiger Conjecture asserts that every $K_t$-minor-free graph is $t$-choosable. We disprove this conjecture by constructing a $K_{3t+2}$-minor-free graph that is not $4t$-choosable for every integer $t\geq 1$.

Decompositions of Complete Multipartite Graphs into Complete Graphs
Let $k\geq\ell\geq1$ and $n\geq 1$ be integers. Let $G(k,n)$ be the complete $k$-partite graph with $n$ vertices in each colour class. An $\ell$-decomposition of $G(k,n)$ is a set $X$ of copies of $K_k$ in $G(k,n)$ such that each copy of $K_\ell$ in $G(k,n)$ is a subgraph of exactly one copy of $K_k$ in $X$. This paper asks: when does $G(k,n)$ have an $\ell$-decomposition? The answer is well known for the $\ell=2$ case. In particular, $G(k,n)$ has a 2-decomposition if and only if there exists $k-2$ mutually orthogonal Latin squares of order $n$. For general $\ell$, we prove that $G(k,n)$ has an $\ell$-decomposition if and only if there are $k-\ell$ Latin cubes of dimension $\ell$ and order $n$, with an additional property that we call mutually invertible. This property is stronger than being mutually orthogonal. An $\ell$-decomposition of $G(k,n)$ is then constructed whenever no prime less than $k$ divides $n$.

Colouring the Triangles Determined by a Point Set
Published in J. Computational Geometry 3:86-101, 2012 • Search Publication
Let P be a set of n points in general position in the plane. We study the chromatic number of the intersection graph of the open triangles determined by P. It is known that this chromatic number is at least n^3/27+O(n^2), and if P is in convex position, the answer is n^3/24+O(n^2). We prove that for arbitrary P, the chromatic number is at most n^3/19.259+O(n^2).

Cliques in Odd-Minor-Free Graphs
This paper is about: (1) bounds on the number of cliques in a graph in a particular class, and (2) algorithms for listing all cliques in a graph. We present a simple algorithm that lists all cliques in an $n$-vertex graph in O(n) time per clique. For O(1)-degenerate graphs, such as graphs excluding a fixed minor, we describe a O(n) time algorithm for listing all cliques. We prove that graphs excluding a fixed odd-minor have $O(n^2)$ cliques (which is tight), and conclude a $O(n^3)$ time algorithm for listing all cliques.
