The $α$-representation for the characteristic function of a matroid
Let $M=(E,\mathcal B)$ be an $\mathbb F_q$-linear matroid; denote by ${\mathcal B}$ the family of its bases, $s(M;α)=\sum_{B\in\mathcal B}\prod_{e \in B} α_e$, where ${α_e\in \mathbb F_q}$. According to the Kontsevich conjecture stated in 1997, the number of nonzero values of $s(M;α)$ is a polynomial with respect to $q$ for all matroids. This conjecture was disproved by P. Brosnan and P. Belkale. In this paper we express the characteristic polynomial of the dual matroid $M^\perp$ in terms of the "correct" Kontsevich formula (for $\mathbb F_q$-linear matroids). This representation generalizes the formula for a flow polynomial of a graph which was obtained by us earlier (and with the help of another technique). In addition, generalizing the correlation (announced by us earlier) that connects flow and chromatic polynomials, we define the characteristic polynomial of $M^\perp$ in two ways, namely, in terms of characteristic polynomials of $M/A$ and $M|_A$, respectively, $A\subseteq E$. The latter expressions are close to convolution-multiplication formulas established by V. Reiner and J. P. S. Kung.

Let $G$ be a connected graph; denote by $τ(G)$ the set of its spanning trees. Let $\mathbb F_q$ be a finite field, $s(α,G)=\sum_{T\inτ(G)} \prod_{e \in E(T)} α_e$, where ${α_e\in \mathbb F_q}$. Kontsevich conjectured in 1997 that the number of nonzero values of $s(α, G)$ is a polynomial in $q$ for all graphs. This conjecture was disproved by Brosnan and Belkale. In this paper, using the standard technique of the Fourier transformation of Feynman amplitudes, we express the flow polynomial $F_G(q)$ in terms of the "correct" Kontsevich formula. Our formula represents $F_G(q)$ as a linear combination of Legendre symbols of $s(α, H)$ with coefficients $\pm 1/q^{(|V(H)|-1)/2}$, where $H$ is a contracted graph of $G$ depending on $α\in \left(\mathbb F^*_q\right)^{E(G)}$, and $|V(H)|$ is odd. The case $q=5$ corresponds to the least number with which all coefficients in the linear combination are positive. This allows us to hope that the obtained result can be applied to prove the Tutte 5-flow conjecture.

Let $ω_0, ω_1,\ldots, ω_n$ be a full set of outcomes (letters, symbols) and let positive $p_i$, $i=0,\ldots,n$, be their probabilities ($\sum_{i=0}^n p_i=1$). Let us treat $ω_0$ as a stop symbol; it can occur in sequences of symbols (we call them words) only once, at the very end. The probability of a word is defined as the product of probabilities of its letters. We consider the list of all possible words sorted in the non-increasing order of their probabilities. Let $p(r)$ be the probability of the $r$th word in this list. We prove that if at least one of ratios $\log p_i/\log p_j$, $i,j\in\{ 1,\ldots,n\}$, is irrational, then the limit $\lim_{r\to\infty} p(r)/r^{1/γ}$ exists and differs from zero; here $γ$ is the root of the equation $\sum_{i=1}^n p_i^γ=1$. Some weaker results were established earlier. We are first to write an explicit formula for this limit constant at the power function; it can be expressed (rather easily) in terms of the entropy of the distribution~$(p_1^γ,\ldots,p_n^γ)$.
