An upper bound for the crossing number of augmented cubes
Published • View PublicationBIB
A {\it good drawing} of a graph $G$ is a drawing where the edges are non-self-intersecting and each two edges have at most one point in common, which is either a common end vertex or a crossing. The {\it crossing number} of a graph $G$ is the minimum number of pairwise intersections of edges in a good drawing of $G$ in the plane. The {\it $n$-dimensional augmented cube} $AQ_n$, proposed by S.A. Choudum and V. Sunitha, is an important interconnection network with good topological properties and applications. In this paper, we obtain an upper bound on the crossing number of $AQ_n$ less than $26/324^{n}-(2n^2+7/2n-6)2^{n-2}$.

Disproof of a conjecture by Erdős and Guy on the crossing number of hypercubes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $Q_n$ be the $n$-dimensional hypercube, and let ${\rm cr}(Q_n)$ be the \textit{crossing number} of $Q_n$. Erdős and Guy in 1973 conjectured the following equality: ${\rm cr}(Q_n)=\frac{5}{32}4^n-\lfloor\frac{n^2+1}{2}\rfloor 2^{n-2}$. In this paper, we construct a drawing of $Q_n$ with less crossings when $n>6$, which implies that for $n>6$ we have a strict inequality.
On short zero-sum subsequences of zero-sum sequences

Let $G$ be a finite abelian group, and let $η(G)$ be the smallest integer $d$ such that every sequence over $G$ of length at least $d$ contains a zero-sum subsequence $T$ with length $|T|\in [1,\exp(G)]$. In this paper, we investigate the question whether all non-cyclic finite abelian groups $G$ share with the following property: There exists at least one integer $t\in [\exp(G)+1,η(G)-1]$ such that every zero-sum sequence of length exactly $t$ contains a zero-sum subsequence of length in $[1,\exp(G)]$. Previous results showed that the groups $C_n^2$ ($n\geq 3$) and $C_3^3$ have the property above. In this paper we show that more groups including the groups $C_m\oplus C_n$ with $3\leq m\mid n$, $C_{3^a5^b}^3$, $C_{3\times 2^a}^3$, $C_{3^a}^4$ and $C_{2^b}^r$ ($b\geq 2$) have this property. We also determine all $t\in [\exp(G)+1, η(G)-1]$ with the property above for some groups including the groups of rank two, and some special groups with large exponent.
The crossing number of locally twisted cubes
The {\it crossing number} of a graph $G$ is the minimum number of pairwise intersections of edges in a drawing of $G$. Motivated by the recent work [Faria, L., Figueiredo, C.M.H. de, Sykora, O., Vrt'o, I.: An improved upper bound on the crossing number of the hypercube. J. Graph Theory {\bf 59}, 145--161 (2008)] which solves the upper bound conjecture on the crossing number of $n$-dimensional hypercube proposed by Erdős and Guy, we give upper and lower bounds of the crossing number of locally twisted cube, which is one of variants of hypercube.

On the Domination Number of Generalized Petersen Graphs P(ck,k)
Let $G=(V(G),E(G))$ be a simple connected and undirected graph with vertex set $V(G)$ and edge set $E(G)$. A set $S \subseteq V(G)$ is a $dominating$ $set$ if for each $v \in V(G)$ either $v \in S$ or $v$ is adjacent to some $w \in S$. That is, $S$ is a dominating set if and only if $N[S]=V(G)$. The domination number $γ(G)$ is the minimum cardinalities of minimal dominating sets. In this paper, we give an improved upper bound on the domination number of generalized Petersen graphs $P(ck,k)$ for $c\geq 3$ and $k\geq 3$. We also prove that $γ(P(4k,k))=2k+1$ for even $k$, $γ(P(5k,k))=3k$ for all $k\geq 1$, and $γ(P(6k,k))=\lceil\frac{10k}{3}\rceil$ for $k\geq 1$ and $k\neq 2$.

The crossing number of cubes with small order
The {\it crossing number} of a graph $G$ is the minimum number of pairwise intersections of edges in a drawing of $G$. In this paper, we give the exact values of crossing numbers for some variations of hypercube with order at most four, including crossed cube, locally twisted cube and Möbius cube.

Extremal incomplete sets in finite abelian groups
Let $G$ be a finite abelian group. The critical number ${\rm cr}(G)$ of $G$ is the least positive integer $\ell$ such that every subset $A\subseteq G\setminus\{0\}$ of cardinality at least $\ell$ spans $G$, i.e., every element of $G$ can be written as a nonempty sum of distinct elements of $A$. The exact values of the critical number have been completely determined recently for all finite abelian groups. The structure of these sets of cardinality ${\rm cr}(G)-1$ which fail to span $G$ has also been characterized except for the case that $|G|$ is an even number and the case that $|G|=pq$ with $p,q$ are primes. In this paper, we characterize these extremal subsets for $|G|\geq 36$ is an even number, or $|G|=pq$ with $p,q$ are primes and $q\geq 2p+3$.
On the number of subsequences with a given sum in a finite abelian group
Published • View PublicationBIB
Suppose $G$ is a finite abelian group and $S$ is a sequence of elements in $G$. For any element $g$ of $G$, let $N_g(S)$ denote the number of subsequences of $S$ with sum $g$. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the lower bound for $N_g(S)$. In particular, we prove that either $N_g(S)=0$ or $N_g(S) \ge 2^{|S|-D(G)+1}$, where $D(G)$ is the smallest positive integer $\ell$ such that every sequence over $G$ of length at least $\ell$ has a nonempty zero-sum subsequence. We also characterize the structures of the extremal sequences for which the equality holds for some groups.
The crossing number of folded hypercubes
The {\it crossing number} of a graph $G$ is the minimum number of pairwise intersections of edges in a drawing of $G$. The {\it $n$-dimensional folded hypercube} $FQ_n$ is a graph obtained from $n$-dimensional hypercube by adding all complementary edges. In this paper, we obtain upper and lower bounds of the crossing number of $FQ_n$.
On the Index of Sequences over Cyclic Groups

Let $G$ be a finite cyclic group of order $n \ge 2$. Every sequence $S$ over $G$ can be written in the form $S=(n_1g)\cdot ... \cdot (n_lg)$ where $g\in G$ and $n_1,..., n_l \in [1,\ord(g)]$, and the index $\ind (S)$ of $S$ is defined as the minimum of $(n_1+ ... + n_l)/\ord (g)$ over all $g \in G$ with $\ord (g) = n$. In this paper we prove that a sequence $S$ over $G$ of length $|S| = n$ having an element with multiplicity at least $\frac{n}{2}$ has a subsequence $T$ with $\ind (T) = 1$, and if the group order $n$ is a prime, then the assumption on the multiplicity can be relaxed to $\frac{n-2}{10}$. On the other hand, if $n=4k+2$ with $k \ge 5$, we provide an example of a sequence $S$ having length $|S| > n$ and an element with multiplicity $\frac{n}{2}-1$ which has no subsequence $T$ with $\ind (T) = 1$. This disproves a conjecture given twenty years ago by Lemke and Kleitman.

Distinct Lengths Modular Zero-sum Subsequences: A Proof of Graham's Conjecture
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $n$ be a positive integer and let $S$ be a sequence of $n$ integers in the interval $[0,n-1]$. If there is an $r$ such that any nonempty subsequence with sum $\equiv 0$ $\pmod n$ has length $=r,$ then $S$ has at most two distinct values. This proves a conjecture of R. L. Graham. A previous result of P. Erdős and E. Szemerédi shows the validity of this conjecture if $n$ is a large prime number.
