On zero-sum problems over metacyclic groups $C_n \rtimes_s C_2$
Let $G$ be a finite group. A finite collection of elements from $G$, where the order is disregarded and repetitions are allowed, is said to be a product-one sequence if its elements can be ordered such that their product in $G$ equals the identity element of $G$. Then, the Gao's constant $\mathsf E (G)$ of $G$ is the smallest integer $\ell$ such that every sequence of length at least $\ell$ has a product-one subsequence of length $|G|$. For a positive integer $n$, we denote by $C_n$ a cyclic group of order $n$. Let $G = C_n \rtimes_s C_2$ with $s^2\equiv 1\pmod n$ be a metacyclic group. The direct and inverse problems of $\mathsf E (G)$ were settled recently, except for the case that $G=C_{3n_2}\rtimes_s C_2$ with $n_2\neq 1$, $\gcd(n_2,6)=1$, $s\equiv -1 \pmod 3$, and $s\equiv 1\pmod {n_2}$. In this paper, we complete the remaining case and hence for all metacyclic groups of the form $G=C_n \rtimes C_2$, the Gao's constant and the associated inverse problem are now fully settled (see Theorem 1.2).
On the inverse problem of the $k$-th Davenport constants for groups of rank $2$
For a finite abelian group $G$ and a positive integer $k$, let $\mathsf{D}_k(G)$ denote the smallest integer $\ell$ such that each sequence over $G$ of length at least $\ell$ has $k$ disjoint nontrivial zero-sum subsequences. It is known that $\mathsf D_k(G)=n_1+kn_2-1$ if $G\cong C_{n_1}\oplus C_{n_2}$ is a rank $2$ group, where $1<n_1\t n_2$. We investigate the associated inverse problem for rank $2$ groups, that is, characterizing the structure of zero-sum sequences of length $\mathsf D_k(G)$ that can not be partitioned into $k+1$ nontrivial zero-sum subsequences.
On Monoids of plus-minus weighted Zero-Sum Sequences: The Isomorphism Problem and the Characterization Problem
Let $G$ be an additive abelian group. A sequence $S=g_1\cdot\ldots\cdot g_{\ell}$ of terms from $G$ is a plus-minus weighted zero-sum sequence if there are $\varepsilon_1,\ldots,\varepsilon_{\ell}\in\{-1,1\}$ such that $\varepsilon_1 g_1+\ldots+\varepsilon_{\ell} g_{\ell}=0$. We first characterize (in terms of $G$) when the monoid $\mathcal{B}_{\pm}(G)$ of plus-minus weighted zero-sum sequences is Mori resp. Krull resp. finitely generated. After that we study the Isomorphism and the Characterization Problem for monoids of plus-minus weighted zero-sum sequences.

Let $G$ be an additive finite abelian group and $Γ\subset \operatorname{End} (G)$ be a subset of the endomorphism group of $G$. A sequence $S = g_1 \cdot \ldots \cdot g_{\ell}$ over $G$ is a ($Γ$-)weighted zero-sum sequence if there are $γ_1, \ldots, γ_{\ell} \in Γ$ such that $γ_1 (g_1) + \ldots + γ_{\ell} (g_{\ell})=0$. We construct transfer homomorphisms from norm monoids (of Galois algebraic number fields with Galois group $Γ$) and from monoids of positive integers, represented by binary quadratic forms, to monoids of weighted zero-sum sequences. Then we study algebraic and arithmetic properties of monoids of weighted zero-sum sequences.

We study a zero-sum problem dealing with minimal zero-sum sequences of maximal length over finite abelian groups. A positive answer to this problem yields a structural description of sets of lengths with maximal elasticity in transfer Krull monoids over finite abelian groups.

Let $(G, 1_G)$ be a finite group and let $S=g_1\bdot \ldots\bdot g_{\ell}$ be a nonempty sequence over $G$. We say $S$ is a tiny product-one sequence if its terms can be ordered such that their product equals $1_G$ and $\sum_{i=1}^{\ell}\frac{1}{\ord(g_i)}\le 1$. Let $\mathsf {ti}(G)$ be the smallest integer $t$ such that every sequence $S$ over $G$ with $|S|\ge t$ has a tiny product-one subsequence. The direct problem is to obtain the exact value of $\mathsf {ti}(G)$, while the inverse problem is to characterize the structure of long sequences over $G$ which have no tiny product-one subsequences. In this paper, we consider the inverse problem for cyclic groups and we also study both direct and inverse problems for dihedral groups and dicyclic groups.

Let $H$ be a transfer Krull monoid over a subset $G_0$ of an abelian group $G$ with finite exponent. Then every non-unit $a\in H$ can be written as a finite product of atoms, say $a=u_1 \cdot \ldots \cdot u_k$. The set $\mathsf L(a)$ of all possible factorization lengths $k$ is called the set of lengths of $a$, and $H$ is said to be half-factorial if $|\mathsf L(a)|=1$ for all $a\in H$. We show that, if $a \in H$ and $|\mathsf L(a^{\lfloor (3\exp(G) - 3)/2 \rfloor})| = 1$, then the smallest divisor-closed submonoid of $H$ containing $a$ is half-factorial. In addition, we prove that, if $G_0$ is finite and $|\mathsf L(\prod_{g\in G_0}g^{2\mathsf{ord}(g)})|=1$, then $H$ is half-factorial.

Let $G$ be a finite group. A sequence over $G$ means a finite sequence of terms from $G$, where repetition is allowed and the order is disregarded. A product-one sequence is a sequence whose elements can be ordered such that their product equals the identity element of the group. The set of all product-one sequences over $G$ (with concatenation of sequences as the operation) is a finitely generated C-monoid. Product-one sequences over dihedral groups have a variety of extremal properties. This article provides a detailed investigation, with methods from arithmetic combinatorics, of the arithmetic of the monoid of product-one sequences over dihedral groups.
On Erdős-Ginzburg-Ziv inverse theorems for Dihedral and Dicyclic groups
Let $G$ be a finite group and exp$(G)$ = lcm$\{$ord$(g)$$\mid$$g \in G \}$. A finite unordered sequence of terms from $G$, where repetition is allowed, is a product-one sequence if its terms can be ordered such that their product equals the identity element of $G$. We denote by $\mathsf s (G)$ (or $\mathsf E (G)$ respectively) the smallest integer $\ell$ such that every sequence of length at least $\ell$ has a product-one subsequence of length $\exp (G)$ (or $|G|$ respectively). In this paper, we provide the exact values of $\mathsf s (G)$ and $\mathsf E (G)$ for Dihedral and Dicyclic groups and we provide explicit characterizations of all sequences of length $\mathsf s (G) - 1$ (or $\mathsf E (G) - 1$ respectively) having no product-one subsequence of length $\exp (G)$ (or $|G|$ respectively).

Let $G$ be a finite group. By a sequence over $G$, we mean a finite unordered sequence of terms from $G$, where repetition is allowed, and we say that it is a product-one sequence if its terms can be ordered such that their product equals the identity element of $G$. The large Davenport constant $\mathsf D (G)$ is the maximal length of a minimal product-one sequence, that is, a product-one sequence which cannot be factored into two non-trivial product-one subsequences. We provide explicit characterizations of all minimal product-one sequences of length $\mathsf D (G)$ over Dihedral and Dicyclic groups. Based on these characterizations we study the unions of sets of lengths of the monoid of product-one sequences over these groups.

Transfer Krull monoids are a recent concept including all commutative Krull domains and also, for example, wide classes of non-commutative Dedekind domains. We show that transfer Krull monoids are fully elastic (i.e., every rational number between $1$ and the elasticity of the monoid can be realized as the elasticity of an element). In commutative Krull monoids which have sufficiently many prime divisors in all classes of their class group, the set of catenary degrees and the set of tame degrees are intervals. Without the assumption on the distribution of prime divisors, arbitrary finite sets can be realized as sets of catenary degrees and as sets of tame degrees.

Let $H$ be a transfer Krull monoid over a finite ablian group $G$ (for example, rings of integers, holomorphy rings in algebraic function fields, and regular congruence monoids in these domains). Then each nonunit $a \in H$ can be written as a product of irreducible elements, say $a = u_1 \ldots u_k$, and the number of factors $k$ is called the length of the factorization. The set $\mathsf L (a)$ of all possible factorization lengths is the set of lengths of $a$. It is classical that the system $\mathcal L (H) = \{ \mathsf L (a) \mid a \in H \}$ of all sets of lengths depends only on the group $G$, and a standing conjecture states that conversely the system $\mathcal L (H)$ is characteristic for the group $G$. Let $H'$ be a further transfer Krull monoid over a finite ablian group $G'$ and suppose that $\mathcal L (H)= \mathcal L (H')$. We prove that, if $G\cong C_n^r$ with $r\le n-3$ or ($r\ge n-1\ge 2$ and $n$ is a prime power), then $G$ and $G'$ are isomorphic.

The set $\mathsf L (a)$ of all possible factorization lengths $k$ is called the set of lengths of $a$. There is a constant $M \in \mathbb N$ such that all sets of lengths are almost arithmetical multiprogressions with bound $M$ and with difference $d \in Δ^* (H)$, where $Δ^* (H)$ denotes the set of minimal distances of $H$. We study the structure of $Δ^* (H)$ and establish a characterization when $Δ^*(H)$ is an interval.
The system $\mathcal L (H) = \{ \mathsf L (a) \mid a \in H \}$ of all sets of lengths depends only on the class group $G$, and a standing conjecture states that conversely the system $\mathcal L (H)$ is characteristic for the class group. We confirm this conjecture (among others) if the class group is isomorphic to $C_n^r$ with $r,n \in \mathbb N$ and $Δ^*(H)$ is not an interval.
Systems of sets of lengths: Transfer Krull monoids versus weakly Krull monoids

Transfer Krull monoids are monoids which allow a weak transfer homomorphism to a commutative Krull monoid, and hence the system of sets of lengths of a transfer Krull monoid coincides with that of the associated commutative Krull monoid. We unveil a couple of new features of the system of sets of lengths of transfer Krull monoids over finite abelian groups G, and we provide a complete description of the system for all groups G having Davenport constant D(G) = 5 (these are the smallest groups for which no such descriptions were known so far). Under reasonable algebraic finiteness assumptions, sets of lengths of transfer Krull monoids and of weakly Krull monoids satisfy the Structure Theorem for Sets of Lengths. In spite of this common feature we demonstrate that systems of sets of lengths for a variety of classes of weakly Krull monoids are different from the system of sets of lengths of any transfer Krull monoid.

Let $H$ be a Krull monoid with finite class group $G$ such that every class contains a prime divisor. For $k\in \mathbb N$, let $\mathcal U_k(H)$ denote the set of all $m\in \mathbb N$ with the following property: There exist atoms $u_1, \ldots, u_k, v_1, \ldots , v_m\in H$ such that $u_1\cdot\ldots\cdot u_k=v_1\cdot\ldots\cdot v_m$. It is well-known that the sets $\mathcal U_k (H)$ are finite intervals whose maxima $ρ_k(H)=\max \mathcal U_k(H) $ depend only on $G$. If $|G|\le 2$, then $ρ_k (H) = k$ for every $k \in \mathbb N$. Suppose that $|G| \ge 3$. An elementary counting argument shows that $ρ_{2k}(H)=k\mathsf D(G)$ and $k\mathsf D(G)+1\le ρ_{2k+1}(H)\le k\mathsf D(G)+\lfloor \frac{\mathsf D(G)}{2}\rfloor$ where $\mathsf D(G)$ is the Davenport constant. In \cite{Ga-Ge09b} it was proved that for cyclic groups we have $k\mathsf D(G)+1 = ρ_{2k+1}(H)$ for every $k \in \mathbb N$. In the present paper we show that (under a mild condition on the Davenport constant) for every noncyclic group there exists a $k^*\in \mathbb N$ such that $ρ_{2k+1}(H)= k\mathsf D(G)+\lfloor \frac{\mathsf D(G)}{2}\rfloor$ for every $k\ge k^*$. This confirms a conjecture of A. Geroldinger, D. Grynkiewicz, and P. Yuan in \cite{Ge-Gr-Yu15}.

Let $H$ be a Krull monoid with finite class group $G$ and suppose that every class contains a prime divisor. If an element $a \in H$ has a factorization $a=u_1 \cdot \ldots \cdot u_k$ into irreducible elements $u_1, \ldots, u_k \in H$, then $k$ is called the length of the factorization and the set $\mathsf L (a)$ of all possible factorization lengths is the set of lengths of $a$. It is classical that the system $\mathcal L (H) = \{ \mathsf L (a) \mid a \in H \}$ of all sets of lengths depends only on the class group $G$, and a standing conjecture states that conversely the system $\mathcal L (H)$ is characteristic for the class group. We verify the conjecture if the class group is isomorphic to $C_n^r$ with $r,n \ge 2$ and $r \le \max \{2, (n+2)/6\}$. Indeed, let $H'$ be a further Krull monoid with class group $G'$ such that every class contains a prime divisor and suppose that $\mathcal L (H)= \mathcal L (H')$. We prove that, if one of the groups $G$ and $G'$ is isomorphic to $C_n^r$ with $r,n$ as above, then $G$ and $G'$ are isomorphic (apart from two well-known pairings).

Let $G$ be a finite abelian group. The Erd{ő}s-Ginzburg-Ziv constant $\mathsf s(G)$ of $G$ is defined as the smallest integer $l\in \mathbb{N}$ such that every sequence $S$ over $G$ of length $|S|\geq l$ has a zero-sum subsequence $T$ of length $|T|= {\exp}(G)$. The value of this classical invariant for groups with rank at most two is known. But the precise value of $\mathsf s(G)$ for the groups of rank larger than two is difficult to determine. In this paper we pay our attentions to the groups of the form $C_2^{r-1}\oplus C_{2n}$, where $r\geq 3$ and $n\ge 2$. We give a new upper bound of $\mathsf s(C_2^{r-1}\oplus C_{2n})$ for odd integer $n$. For $r\in [3,4]$, we obtain that $\mathsf s(C_2^2\oplus C_{2n})=4n+3$ for $n\ge 2$ and $\mathsf s(C_2^{3}\oplus C_{2n})=4n+5$ for $n\geq 36$.

Let $H$ be a Krull monoid with finite class group $G$ such that every class contains a prime divisor (for example, a ring of integers in an algebraic number field or a holomorphy ring in an algebraic function field). The catenary degree $\mathsf c (H)$ of $H$ is the smallest integer $N$ with the following property: for each $a \in H$ and each two factorizations $z, z'$ of $a$, there exist factorizations $z = z_0, ..., z_k = z'$ of $a$ such that, for each $i \in [1, k]$, $z_i$ arises from $z_{i-1}$ by replacing at most $N$ atoms from $z_{i-1}$ by at most $N$ new atoms. To exclude trivial cases, suppose that $|G| \ge 3$. Then the catenary degree depends only on the class group $G$ and we have $\mathsf c (H) \in [3, \mathsf D (G)]$, where $\mathsf D (G)$ denotes the Davenport constant of $G$. It is well-known when $\mathsf c (H) \in \{3,4, \mathsf D (G)\}$ holds true. Based on a characterization of the catenary degree determined in the first paper (The catenary degree of Krull monoids I), we determine the class groups satisfying $\mathsf c (H)= \mathsf D (G)-1$. Apart from the mentioned extremal cases the precise value of $\mathsf c (H)$ is known for no further class groups.

On the maximal multiplicity of long zero-sum free sequences over $C_p\oplus C_p$
In this paper, we point out that the method used in [Acta Arith. 128(2007) 245-279] can be modified slightly to obtain the following result. Let $\varepsilon \in (0,\frac 14)$ and $c>0$, and let $p$ be a sufficiently large prime depending on $\varepsilon$ and $c$. Then every zero-sumfree sequence $S$ over $C_p\oplus C_p$ of length $|S|\geq 2p-c\sqrt{p}$ contains some element at least $\lfloor p^{\frac14-\varepsilon}\rfloor$ times.
