On a classical zero-sum invariant
Let $G$ be a nontrivial, finite abelian group. Then $ν(G)$ is the smallest integer $\ell$ such that every zero-sum free sequence $T$ over $G$ of length at least $\ell$ has the following property: all nonzero elements of $G$ that do not occur as a subsequence sum of $T$ lie in a proper coset of some subgroup of $G$. We study the invariant $ν(G)$, which was introduced in Zero-Sum Theory in the 1960s.
On Sets of Lengths in Monoids of plus-minus weighted Zero-Sum Sequences
Let $G$ be an additive abelian group. A sequence $S = g_1 \cdot \ldots \cdot g_{\ell}$ of terms from $G$ is a plus-minus weighted zero-sum sequence if there are $\varepsilon_1, \ldots, \varepsilon_{\ell} \in \{-1, 1\}$ such that $\varepsilon_1 g_1 + \ldots + \varepsilon_{\ell} g_{\ell}=0$. We study sets of lengths in the monoid $\mathcal B_{\pm} (G)$ of plus-minus weighted zero-sum sequences over $G$. If $G$ is finite, then sets of lengths are highly structured. If $G$ is infinite, then every finite, nonempty subset of $\mathbb N_{\ge 2}$ is the set of lengths of some sequence $S \in \mathcal B_{\pm} (G)$.
On Monoids of plus-minus weighted Zero-Sum Sequences: The Isomorphism Problem and the Characterization Problem
Let $G$ be an additive abelian group. A sequence $S=g_1\cdot\ldots\cdot g_{\ell}$ of terms from $G$ is a plus-minus weighted zero-sum sequence if there are $\varepsilon_1,\ldots,\varepsilon_{\ell}\in\{-1,1\}$ such that $\varepsilon_1 g_1+\ldots+\varepsilon_{\ell} g_{\ell}=0$. We first characterize (in terms of $G$) when the monoid $\mathcal{B}_{\pm}(G)$ of plus-minus weighted zero-sum sequences is Mori resp. Krull resp. finitely generated. After that we study the Isomorphism and the Characterization Problem for monoids of plus-minus weighted zero-sum sequences.

Let $G$ be an additive finite abelian group and $Γ\subset \operatorname{End} (G)$ be a subset of the endomorphism group of $G$. A sequence $S = g_1 \cdot \ldots \cdot g_{\ell}$ over $G$ is a ($Γ$-)weighted zero-sum sequence if there are $γ_1, \ldots, γ_{\ell} \in Γ$ such that $γ_1 (g_1) + \ldots + γ_{\ell} (g_{\ell})=0$. We construct transfer homomorphisms from norm monoids (of Galois algebraic number fields with Galois group $Γ$) and from monoids of positive integers, represented by binary quadratic forms, to monoids of weighted zero-sum sequences. Then we study algebraic and arithmetic properties of monoids of weighted zero-sum sequences.

We study a zero-sum problem dealing with minimal zero-sum sequences of maximal length over finite abelian groups. A positive answer to this problem yields a structural description of sets of lengths with maximal elasticity in transfer Krull monoids over finite abelian groups.

Let $H$ be a Krull monoid with finite class group $G$ such that every class contains a prime divisor. We consider the system $\mathcal L (H)$ of all sets of lengths of $H$ and study when $\mathcal L (H)$ contains or is contained in a system $\mathcal L (H')$ of a Krull monoid $H'$ with finite class group $G'$, prime divisors in all classes and Davenport constant $\mathsf D (G')=\mathsf D (G)$. Among others, we show that if $G$ is either cyclic of order $m \ge 7$ or an elementary $2$-group of rank $m-1 \ge 6$, and $G'$ is any group which is non-isomorphic to $G$ but with Davenport constant $\mathsf D (G')=\mathsf D (G)$, then the systems $\mathcal L (H)$ and $\mathcal L (H')$ are incomparable.

Let $G$ be a finite group. A sequence over $G$ means a finite sequence of terms from $G$, where repetition is allowed and the order is disregarded. A product-one sequence is a sequence whose elements can be ordered such that their product equals the identity element of the group. The set of all product-one sequences over $G$ (with concatenation of sequences as the operation) is a finitely generated C-monoid. Product-one sequences over dihedral groups have a variety of extremal properties. This article provides a detailed investigation, with methods from arithmetic combinatorics, of the arithmetic of the monoid of product-one sequences over dihedral groups.

Transfer Krull monoids are a recent concept including all commutative Krull domains and also, for example, wide classes of non-commutative Dedekind domains. We show that transfer Krull monoids are fully elastic (i.e., every rational number between $1$ and the elasticity of the monoid can be realized as the elasticity of an element). In commutative Krull monoids which have sufficiently many prime divisors in all classes of their class group, the set of catenary degrees and the set of tame degrees are intervals. Without the assumption on the distribution of prime divisors, arbitrary finite sets can be realized as sets of catenary degrees and as sets of tame degrees.

For an element $a$ of a monoid $H$, its set of lengths $\mathsf L (a) \subset \mathbb N$ is the set of all positive integers $k$ for which there is a factorization $a=u_1 \cdot \ldots \cdot u_k$ into $k$ atoms. We study the system $\mathcal L (H) = \{\mathsf L (a) \mid a \in H \}$ with a focus on the unions $\mathcal U_k (H) \subset \mathbb N$ which are the unions of all sets of lengths containing a given $k \in \mathbb N$. The Structure Theorem for Unions -- stating that for all sufficiently large $k$, the sets $\mathcal U_k (H)$ are almost arithmetical progressions with the same difference and global bound -- has found much attention for commutative monoids and domains. We show that it holds true for the not necessarily commutative monoids in the title satisfying suitable algebraic finiteness conditions. Furthermore, we give an explicit description of the system of sets of lengths of monoids $B_{n} = \langle a,b \mid ba=b^{n} \rangle$ for $n \in \N_{\ge 2}$. Based on this description, we show that the monoids $B_n$ are not transfer Krull, which implies that their systems $\mathcal L (B_n)$ are distinct from systems of sets of lengths of commutative Krull monoids and others.

Let $H$ be a commutative semigroup with unit element such that every non-unit can be written as a finite product of irreducible elements (atoms). For every $k \in \mathbb N$, let $\mathscr U_k (H)$ denote the set of all $\ell \in \mathbb N$ with the property that there are atoms $u_1, \ldots, u_k, v_1, \ldots, v_{\ell}$ such that $u_1 \cdot \ldots \cdot u_k = v_1 \cdot \ldots \cdot v_{\ell}$ (thus, $\mathscr U_k (H)$ is the union of all sets of lengths containing $k$).
The Structure Theorem for Unions states that, for all sufficiently large $k$, the sets $\mathscr U_k (H)$ are almost arithmetical progressions with the same difference and global bound. We present a new approach to this result in the framework of arithmetic combinatorics, by deriving, for suitably defined families of subsets of the non-negative integers, a characterization of when the Structure Theorem holds.
This abstract approach allows us to verify, for the first time, the Structure Theorem for a variety of possibly non-cancellative semigroups, including semigroups of (not necessarily invertible) ideals and semigroups of modules. Furthermore, we provide the very first example of a semigroup (actually, a locally tame Krull monoid) that does not satisfy the Structure Theorem.
Systems of sets of lengths: Transfer Krull monoids versus weakly Krull monoids

Transfer Krull monoids are monoids which allow a weak transfer homomorphism to a commutative Krull monoid, and hence the system of sets of lengths of a transfer Krull monoid coincides with that of the associated commutative Krull monoid. We unveil a couple of new features of the system of sets of lengths of transfer Krull monoids over finite abelian groups G, and we provide a complete description of the system for all groups G having Davenport constant D(G) = 5 (these are the smallest groups for which no such descriptions were known so far). Under reasonable algebraic finiteness assumptions, sets of lengths of transfer Krull monoids and of weakly Krull monoids satisfy the Structure Theorem for Sets of Lengths. In spite of this common feature we demonstrate that systems of sets of lengths for a variety of classes of weakly Krull monoids are different from the system of sets of lengths of any transfer Krull monoid.

Let $H$ be a Krull monoid with finite class group $G$ and suppose that every class contains a prime divisor. If an element $a \in H$ has a factorization $a=u_1 \cdot \ldots \cdot u_k$ into irreducible elements $u_1, \ldots, u_k \in H$, then $k$ is called the length of the factorization and the set $\mathsf L (a)$ of all possible factorization lengths is the set of lengths of $a$. It is classical that the system $\mathcal L (H) = \{ \mathsf L (a) \mid a \in H \}$ of all sets of lengths depends only on the class group $G$, and a standing conjecture states that conversely the system $\mathcal L (H)$ is characteristic for the class group. We verify the conjecture if the class group is isomorphic to $C_n^r$ with $r,n \ge 2$ and $r \le \max \{2, (n+2)/6\}$. Indeed, let $H'$ be a further Krull monoid with class group $G'$ such that every class contains a prime divisor and suppose that $\mathcal L (H)= \mathcal L (H')$. We prove that, if one of the groups $G$ and $G'$ is isomorphic to $C_n^r$ with $r,n$ as above, then $G$ and $G'$ are isomorphic (apart from two well-known pairings).
A characterization of class groups via sets of lengths
Let $H$ be a Krull monoid with class group $G$ such that every class contains a prime divisor. Then every nonunit $a \in H$ can be written as a finite product of irreducible elements. If $a=u\_1 \cdot \ldots \cdot u\_k$, with irreducibles $u\_1, \ldots u\_k \in H$, then $k$ is called the length of the factorization and the set $\mathsf L (a)$ of all possible $k$ is called the set of lengths of $a$. It is well-known that the system $\mathcal L (H) = \{\mathsf L (a) \mid a \in H \}$ depends only on the class group $G$. In the present paper we study the inverse question asking whether or not the system $\mathcal L (H)$ is characteristic for the class group. Consider a further Krull monoid $H'$ with class group $G'$ such that every class contains a prime divisor and suppose that $\mathcal L (H) = \mathcal L (H')$. We show that, if one of the groups $G$ and $G'$ is finite and has rank at most two, then $G$ and $G'$ are isomorphic (apart from two well-known pairings).

Let $H$ be a Krull monoid with class group $G$ and suppose that each class contains a prime divisor. Then every element $a \in H$ has a factorization into irreducible elements, and the set $\mathsf L (a)$ of all possible factorization lengths is the set of lengths of $a$. We consider the system $\mathcal L (H) = \{ \mathsf L (a) \mid a \in H \}$ of all sets of lengths, and we characterize (in terms of the class group $G$) when $\mathcal L (H)$ is additively closed under set addition.

Let $H$ be a Krull monoid with finite class group $G$ such that every class contains a prime divisor (for example, a ring of integers in an algebraic number field or a holomorphy ring in an algebraic function field). The catenary degree $\mathsf c (H)$ of $H$ is the smallest integer $N$ with the following property: for each $a \in H$ and each two factorizations $z, z'$ of $a$, there exist factorizations $z = z_0, ..., z_k = z'$ of $a$ such that, for each $i \in [1, k]$, $z_i$ arises from $z_{i-1}$ by replacing at most $N$ atoms from $z_{i-1}$ by at most $N$ new atoms. To exclude trivial cases, suppose that $|G| \ge 3$. Then the catenary degree depends only on the class group $G$ and we have $\mathsf c (H) \in [3, \mathsf D (G)]$, where $\mathsf D (G)$ denotes the Davenport constant of $G$. It is well-known when $\mathsf c (H) \in \{3,4, \mathsf D (G)\}$ holds true. Based on a characterization of the catenary degree determined in the first paper (The catenary degree of Krull monoids I), we determine the class groups satisfying $\mathsf c (H)= \mathsf D (G)-1$. Apart from the mentioned extremal cases the precise value of $\mathsf c (H)$ is known for no further class groups.

Let $R$ be a ring and let $\mathcal C$ be a small class of right $R$-modules which is closed under finite direct sums, direct summands, and isomorphisms. Let $\mathcal V (\mathcal C)$ denote a set of representatives of isomorphism classes in $\mathcal C$ and, for any module $M$ in $\mathcal C$, let $[M]$ denote the unique element in $\mathcal V (\mathcal C)$ isomorphic to $M$. Then $\mathcal V (\mathcal C)$ is a reduced commutative semigroup with operation defined by $[M] + [N] = [M \oplus N]$, and this semigroup carries all information about direct-sum decompositions of modules in $\mathcal C$. This semigroup-theoretical point of view has been prevalent in the theory of direct-sum decompositions since it was shown that if $\operatorname{End}_R (M)$ is semilocal for all $M\in \mathcal C$, then $\mathcal V (\mathcal C)$ is a Krull monoid. Suppose that the monoid $\mathcal V (\mathcal C)$ is Krull with a finitely generated class group (for example, when $\mathcal C$ is the class of finitely generated torsion-free modules and $R$ is a one-dimensional reduced Noetherian local ring). In this case we study the arithmetic of $\mathcal V (\mathcal C)$ using new methods from zero-sum theory. Furthermore, based on module-theoretic work of Lam, Levy, Robson, and others we study the algebraic and arithmetic structure of the monoid $\mathcal V (\mathcal C)$ for certain classes of modules over Prüfer rings and hereditary Noetherian prime rings.

Let $H$ be a Krull monoid with finite class group $G$. Then every non-unit $a \in H$ can be written as a finite product of atoms, say $a=u_1 \cdot \ldots \cdot u_k$. The set $\mathsf L (a)$ of all possible factorization lengths $k$ is called the set of lengths of $a$. If $G$ is finite, then there is a constant $M \in \mathbb N$ such that all sets of lengths are almost arithmetical multiprogressions with bound $M$ and with difference $d \in Δ^* (H)$, where $Δ^* (H)$ denotes the set of minimal distances of $H$. We show that $\max Δ^* (H) \le \max \{\exp (G)-2, \mathsf r (G)-1\}$ and that equality holds if every class of $G$ contains a prime divisor, which holds true for holomorphy rings in global fields.

Let H be a Krull monoid with finite class group G such that every class contains a prime divisor. Then the global tame degree t (H) equals zero if and only if H is factorial (equivalently, |G|=1). If |G| > 1, then D (G) <= t (H) <= 1 + D (G) (D (G) -1) / 2, where D (G) is the Davenport constant of G. We analyze the case when t (H) equals the lower bound, and we show that t (H) grows asymptotically as the upper bound, when both terms are considered as functions of the rank of G. We provide more precise results if G is either cyclic or an elementary 2-group.

Let $G = C_{n_1} \oplus ... \oplus C_{n_r}$ with $1 < n_1 \t ... \t n_r$ be a finite abelian group, $\mathsf d^* (G) = n_1 + ... + n_r - r$, and let $\mathsf d (G)$ denote the maximal length of a zero-sum free sequence over $G$. Then $\mathsf d (G) \ge \mathsf d^* (G)$, and the standing conjecture is that equality holds for $G = C_n^r$. We show that equality does not hold for $C_2 \oplus C_{2n}^r$, where $n \ge 3$ is odd and $r \ge 4$. This gives new information on the structure of extremal zero-sum free sequences over $C_{2n}^r$.

For a finite abelian group $G$ and a positive integer $d$, let $\mathsf s_{d \mathbb N} (G)$ denote the smallest integer $\ell \in \mathbb N_0$ such that every sequence $S$ over $G$ of length $|S| \ge \ell$ has a nonempty zero-sum subsequence $T$ of length $|T| \equiv 0 \mod d$. We determine $\mathsf s_{d \mathbb N} (G)$ for all $d\geq 1$ when $G$ has rank at most two and, under mild conditions on $d$, also obtain precise values in the case of $p$-groups. In the same spirit, we obtain new upper bounds for the Erd{\H o}s--Ginzburg--Ziv constant provided that, for the $p$-subgroups $G_p$ of $G$, the Davenport constant $\mathsf D (G_p)$ is bounded above by $2 \exp (G_p)-1$. This generalizes former results for groups of rank two.
