On the determinants of matrices with elements from arbitrary sets
Recently there has been several works estimating the number of $n\times n$ matrices with elements from some finite sets $\mathcal X$ of arithmetic interest and of a given determinant. Typically such results are compared with the trivial upper bound $O(X^{n^2-1})$, where $X$ is the cardinality of $\mathcal X$. Here we show that even for arbitrary sets $\mathcal X\subseteq \mathbb R$,some recent results from additive combinatorics enable us to obtain a stronger bound with a power saving.
Functional graphs of families of quadratic polynomials

We study functional graphs generated by several quadratic polynomials, acting simultaneously on a finite field of odd characteristic. We obtain several results about the number of leaves in such graphs. In particular, in the case of graphs generated by three polynomials, we relate the distribution of leaves to the Sato-Tate distribution of Frobenius traces of elliptic curves. We also present extensive numerical results which we hope may shed some light on the distribution of leaves for larger families of polynomials.
Multiplicative Properties of Hilbert Cubes

We obtain upper bounds on the cardinality of Hilbert cubes in finite fields, which avoid large product sets and reciprocals of sum sets. In particular, our results replace recent estimates of N. Hegyvári and P. P. Pach (2020), which appear to be void for all admissible parameters. Our approach is different from that of N. Hegyvári and P. P. Pach and is based on some well-known bounds of double character and exponential sums over arbitrary sets, due to A. A. Karatsuba (1991) and N. G. Moshchevitin (2007), respectively.
Additive energy and a large sieve inequality for sparse sequences

We consider the large sieve inequality for sparse sequences of moduli and give a general result depending on the additive energy (both symmetric and asymmetric) of the sequence of moduli. For example, in the case of monomials $f(X) = X^k$ this allows us to improve, in some ranges of the parameters, the previous bounds of S. Baier and L. Zhao (2005), K.~Halupczok (2012, 2015, 2018) and M.~Munsch (2020). We also consider moduli defined by polynomials $f(X) \in \mathbb{Z}[X]$, Piatetski-Shapiro sequences and general convex sequences. We then apply our results to obtain a version of the Bombieri--Vinogradov theorem with Piatetski-Shapiro moduli improving the level of distribution of R.~C.~Baker (2014).
Bounds of Trilinear and Trinomial Exponential Sums

We prove, for a sufficiently small subset $\mathcal{A}$ of a prime residue field, an estimate on the number of solutions to the equation $(a_1-a_2)(a_3-a_4) = (a_5-a_6)(a_7-a_8)$ with all variables in $\mathcal{A}$. We then derive new bounds on trilinear exponential sums and on the total number of residues equaling the product of two differences of elements of $\mathcal{A}$. We also prove a refined estimate on the number of collinear triples in a Cartesian product of multiplicative subgroups and derive stronger bounds for trilinear sums with all variables in multiplicative subgroups.
Double Character Sums with Intervals and Arbitrary Sets in Finite Fields

We obtain a new bound on certain double sums of multiplicative characters improving the range of several previous results. This improvement comes from new bounds on the number of collinear triples in finite fields, which is a classical object of study of additive combinatorics.
On Functional Graphs of Quadratic Polynomials

We study functional graphs generated by quadratic polynomials over prime fields. We introduce efficient algorithms for methodical computations and provide the values of various direct and cumulative statistical parameters of interest. These include: the number of connected functional graphs, the number of graphs having a maximal cycle, the number of cycles of fixed size, the number of components of fixed size, as well as the shape of trees extracted from functional graphs. We particularly focus on connected functional graphs, that is, the graphs which contain only one component (and thus only one cycle). Based on the results of our computations, we formulate several conjectures highlighting the similarities and differences between these functional graphs and random mappings.
Bounds on trilinear and quadrilinear exponential sums

We use an estimate of Aksoy Yazici, Murphy, Rudnev and Shkredov (2016) on the number of solutions of certain equations involving products and differences of sets in prime finite fields to give an explicit upper bound on trilinear exponential sums which improves the previous bound of Bourgain and Garaev (2009). We also obtain explicit bounds for quadrilinear exponential sums.
Constructing Dominating Sets in Circulant Graphs

We give an efficient construction of a reasonably small dominating set in a circulant graph on $n$ notes and $k$ distinct chord lengths. This result is based on bounds on some double exponential sums. .
Counting Additive Decompositions of Quadratic Residues in Finite Fields

We say that a set $S$ is additively decomposed into two sets $A$ and $B$ if $S = \{a+b : a\in A, \ b \in B\}$. A. Sárközy has recently conjectured that the set $Q$ of quadratic residues modulo a prime $p$ does not have nontrivial decompositions. Although various partial results towards this conjecture have been obtained, it is still open. Here we obtain a nontrivial upper bound on the number of such decompositions.
Cayley graphs generated by small degree polynomials over finite fields

We improve upper bounds of F. R. K. Chung and of M. Lu, D. Wan, L.-P. Wang, X.-D. Zhang on the diameter of some Cayley graphs constructed from polynomials over finite fields.
Functional Graphs of Polynomials over Finite Fields
Given a function $f$ in a finite field ${\mathbb F}_q$ of $q$ elements, we define the functional graph of $f$ as a directed graph on $q$ nodes labelled by the elements of ${\mathbb F}_q$ where there is an edge from $u$ to $v$ if and only if $f(u) = v$. We obtain some theoretic estimates on the number of non-isomorphic graphs generated by all polynomials of a given degree. We then develop a simple and practical algorithm to test the isomorphism of quadratic polynomials that has linear memory and time complexities. Furthermore, we extend this isomorphism testing algorithm to the general case of functional graphs, and prove that, while its time complexity increases only slightly, its memory complexity remains linear. We exploit this algorithm to provide an upper bound on the number of functional graphs corresponding to polynomials of degree $d$ over ${\mathbb F}_q$. Finally, we present some numerical results and compare function graphs of quadratic polynomials with those generated by random maps and pose interesting new problems.
On Pseudopoints of Algebraic Curves

Following Kraitchik and Lehmer, we say that a positive integer $n\equiv1\pmod 8$ is an $x$-pseudosquare if it is a quadratic residue for each odd prime $p\le x$, yet is not a square. We extend this defintion to algebraic curves and say that $n$ is an $x$-pseudopoint of a curve $f(u,v) = 0$ (where $f \in \Z[U,V]$) if for all sufficiently large primes $p \le x$ the congruence $f(n,m)\equiv 0 \pmod p$ is satisfied for some $m$.
We use the Bombieri bound of exponential sums along a curve to estimate the smallest $x$-pseudopoint, which shows the limitations of the modular approach to searching for points on curves.
On the Number of Solutions of Exponential Congruences

For a prime $p$ and an integer $a \in \Z$ we obtain nontrivial upper bounds on the number of solutions to the congruence $x^x \equiv a \pmod p$, $1 \le x \le p-1$. We use these estimates to estimate the number of solutions to the congruence $x^x \equiv y^y \pmod p$, $1 \le x,y \le p-1$, which is of cryptographic relevance.
On Point Sets in Vector Spaces over Finite Fields That Determine Only Acute Angle Triangles

For three points $\vec{u}$,$\vec{v}$ and $\vec{w}$ in the $n$-dimensional space $\F_q^n$ over the finite field $\F_q$ of $q$ elements we give a natural interpretation of an acute angle triangle defined by this points. We obtain an upper bound on the size of a set $\cZ$ such that all triples of distinct points $\vec{u}, \vec{v}, \vec{w} \in \cZ$ define acute angle triangles. A similar question in the real space $\cR^n$ dates back to P. Erd{\H o}s and has been studied by several authors.
Arithmetic and Geometric Progressions in Productsets over Finite Fields

Given two sets $\cA, \cB \subseteq \F_q$ of elements of the finite field $\F_q$ of $q$ elements, we show that the productset $$ \cA\cB = \{ab | a \in \cA, b \in\cB\} $$ contains an arithmetic progression of length $k \ge 3$ provided that $k<p$, where $p$ is the characteristic of $\F_q$, and $# \cA # \cB \ge 3q^{2d-2/k}$. We also consider geometric progressions in a shifted productset $\cA\cB +h$, for $f \in \F_q$, and obtain a similar result.
On The Solvability of Bilinear Equations in Finite Fields

We consider the equation $$ ab + cd = λ, \qquad a\in A, b \in B, c\in C, d \in D, $$ over a finite field $F_q$ of $q$ elements, with variables from arbitrary sets $ A, B, C, D \subseteq F_q$. The question of solvability of such and more general equations has recently been considered by D. Hart and A. Iosevich, who, in particular, proved that if $$ #A #B #C #D \gg q^3, $$ then above equation has a solution for any $λ\in F_q^*$. Here we show that using bounds of multiplicative character sums allows us to extend the class of sets which satisfy this property.
Character Sums and Congruences with n!

We estimate character sums with n!, on average, and individually. These bounds are used to derive new results about various congruences modulo a prime p and obtain new information about the spacings between quadratic nonresidues modulo p. In particular, we show that there exists a positive integer $n\ll p^{1/2+ε}, such that n! is a primitive root modulo p. We also show that every nonzero congruence class a \not \equiv 0 \pmod p can be represented as a product of 7 factorials, a \equiv n_1! ... n_7! \pmod p, where $\max \{n_i | i=1,... 7\}=O(p^{11/12+ε}), and we find the asymptotic formula for the number of such representations. Finally, we show that products of 4 factorials $n_1!n_2!n_3!n_4!, with \max\{n_1, n_2, n_3, n_4\}=O(p^{6/7+ε})$ represent ``almost all''residue classes modulo p, and that products of 3 factorials n_1!n_2!n_3! with \max\{n_1, n_2, n_3\}=O(p^{5/6+ε})$ are uniformly distributed modulo p.
Exponential Sums and Congruences with Factorials

We estimate the number of solutions of certain diagonal congruences involving factorials. We use these results to bound exponential sums with products of two factorials $n!m!$ and also derive asymptotic formulas for the number of solutions of various congruences with factorials. For example, we prove that the products of two factorials $n!m!$ with $\max\{n,m\}<p^{1/2+ε}$ are uniformly distributed modulo $p$, and that any residue class modulo $p$ is representable in the form $m!n!+n_1! + ... +n_{49}!$ with $\max \{m,n, n_1, >..., n_{49}\} < p^{8775/8794+ ε}$.
