The strong clique number of graphs with forbidden cycles
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a graph $G$, the strong clique number of $G$, denoted $ω_S(G)$, is the maximum size of a set $S$ of edges such that every pair of edges in $S$ has distance at most $2$ in the line graph of $G$. As a relaxation of the renowned Erdős--Nešetřil conjecture regarding the strong chromatic index, Faudree et al. suggested investigating the strong clique number, and conjectured a quadratic upper bound in terms of the maximum degree. Recently, Cames van Batenburg, Kang, and Pirot conjectured a linear upper bound in terms of the maximum degree for graphs without even cycles. Namely, if $G$ is a $C_{2k}$-free graph, then $ω_S(G)\leq (2k-1)Δ(G)-{2k-1\choose 2}$, and if $G$ is a $C_{2k}$-free bipartite graph, then $ω_S(G)\leq kΔ(G)-(k-1)$. We prove the second conjecture in a stronger form, by showing that forbidding all odd cycles is not necessary. To be precise, we show that a $\{C_5, C_{2k}\}$-free graph $G$ with $Δ(G)\ge 1$ satisfies $ω_S(G)\leq kΔ(G)-(k-1)$, when either $k\geq 4$ or $k\in \{2,3\}$ and $G$ is also $C_3$-free. Regarding the first conjecture, we prove an upper bound that is off by the constant term. Namely, for $k\geq 3$, we prove that a $C_{2k}$-free graph $G$ with $Δ(G)\ge 1$ satisfies $ω_S(G)\leq (2k-1)Δ(G)+(2k-1)^2$. This improves some results of Cames van Batenburg, Kang, and Pirot.

Partitioning planar graphs without $4$-cycles and $5$-cycles into bounded degree forests
Published • View PublicationBIB
In 1976, Steinberg conjectured that planar graphs without $4$-cycles and $5$-cycles are $3$-colorable. This conjecture attracted numerous researchers for about 40 years, until it was recently disproved by Cohen-Addad et al. (2017). However, coloring planar graphs with restrictions on cycle lengths is still an active area of research, and the interest in this particular graph class remains. Let $G$ be a planar graph without $4$-cycles and $5$-cycles. For integers $d_1$ and $d_2$ satisfying $d_1+d_2\geq8$ and $d_2\geq d_1\geq 2$, it is known that $V(G)$ can be partitioned into two sets $V_1$ and $V_2$, where each $V_i$ induces a graph with maximum degree at most $d_i$. Since Steinberg's Conjecture is false, a partition of $V(G)$ into two sets, where one induces an empty graph and the other induces a forest is not guaranteed. Our main theorem is at the intersection of the two aforementioned research directions. We prove that $V(G)$ can be partitioned into two sets $V_1$ and $V_2$, where $V_1$ induces a forest with maximum degree at most $3$ and $V_2$ induces a forest with maximum degree at most $4$; this is both a relaxation of Steinberg's conjecture and a strengthening of results by Sittitrai and Nakprasit (2019) in a much stronger form.

A sharp Ore-type condition for a connected graph with no induced star to have a Hamiltonian path
Published • View PublicationBIB
We say a graph $G$ has a Hamiltonian path if it has a path containing all vertices of $G$. For a graph $G$, let $σ_2(G)$ denote the minimum degree sum of two nonadjacent vertices of $G$; restrictions on $σ_2(G)$ are known as Ore-type conditions. Given an integer $t\geq 5$, we prove that if a connected graph $G$ on $n$ vertices satisfies $σ_2(G)>{t-3\over t-2}n$, then $G$ has either a Hamiltonian path or an induced subgraph isomorphic to $K_{1, t}$. Moreover, we characterize all $n$-vertex graphs $G$ where $σ_2(G)={t-3\over t-2}n$ and $G$ has neither a Hamiltonian path nor an induced subgraph isomorphic to $K_{1, t}$. This is an analogue of a recent result by Momège, who investigated the case when $t=4$.

Planar graphs with girth at least 5 are (3,4)-colorable
Published in Discrete Mathematics, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.disc.2019.06.033 • View PublicationBIB
A graph is $(d_1, \ldots, d_k)$-colorable if its vertex set can be partitioned into $k$ nonempty subsets so that the subgraph induced by the $i$th part has maximum degree at most $d_i$ for each $i\in\{1, \ldots, k\}$. It is known that for each pair $(d_1, d_2)$, there exists a planar graph with girth $4$ that is not $(d_1, d_2)$-colorable. This sparked the interest in finding the pairs $(d_1, d_2)$ such that planar graphs with girth at least $5$ are $(d_1, d_2)$-colorable. Given $d_1\leq d_2$, it is known that planar graphs with girth at least $5$ are $(d_1, d_2)$-colorable if either $d_1\geq 2$ and $d_1+d_2\geq 8$ or $d_1=1$ and $d_2\geq 10$. We improve an aforementioned result by providing the first pair $(d_1, d_2)$ in the literature satisfying $d_1+d_2\leq 7$ where planar graphs with girth at least $5$ are $(d_1, d_2)$-colorable. Namely, we prove that planar graphs with girth at least $5$ are $(3, 4)$-colorable.

On induced saturation for paths
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a graph $H$, a graph $G$ is $H$-induced-saturated if $G$ does not contain an induced copy of $H$, but either removing an edge from $G$ or adding a non-edge to $G$ creates an induced copy of $H$. Depending on the graph $H$, an $H$-induced-saturated graph does not necessarily exist. In fact, Martin and Smith (2012) showed that $P_4$-induced-saturated graphs do not exist, where $P_k$ denotes a path on $k$ vertices. Axenovich and Csikós (2019) asked the existence of $P_k$-induced-saturated graphs for $k \ge 5$; it is easy to construct such graphs when $k\in\{2, 3\}$. Recently, Räty constructed a graph that is $P_6$-induced-saturated. In this paper, we show that there exists a $P_{k}$-induced-saturated graph for infinitely many values of $k$. To be precise, we find a $P_{3n}$-induced-saturated graph for every positive integer $n$. As a consequence, for each positive integer $n$, we construct infinitely many $P_{3n}$-induced-saturated graphs. We also show that the Kneser graph $K(n,2)$ is $P_6$-induced-saturated for every $n\ge 5$.

Partitioning sparse graphs into an independent set and a graph with bounded size components
We study the problem of partitioning the vertex set of a given graph so that each part induces a graph with components of bounded order; we are also interested in restricting these components to be paths. In particular, we say a graph $G$ admits an $({\cal I}, {\cal O}_k)$-partition if its vertex set can be partitioned into an independent set and a set that induces a graph with components of order at most $k$. We prove that every graph $G$ with $\operatorname{mad}(G)<\frac 52$ admits an $({\cal I}, {\cal O}_3)$-partition. This implies that every planar graph with girth at least $10$ can be partitioned into an independent set and a set that induces a graph whose components are paths of order at most 3. We also prove that every graph $G$ with $\operatorname{mad}(G) < \frac{8k}{3k+1} = \frac{8}{3}\left( 1 - \frac{1}{3k+1} \right)$ admits an $({\cal I}, {\cal O}_k)$-partition. This implies that every planar graph with girth at least $9$ can be partitioned into an independent set and a set that induces a graph whose components are paths of order at most 9.

Collapsibility of non-cover complexes of graphs
Given a graph $G$, the non-cover complex of $G$ is the combinatorial Alexander dual of the independence complex of $G$. Aharoni asked if the non-cover complex of a graph $G$ without isolated vertices is $(|V(G)|-i γ(G)-1)$-collapsible where $i γ(G)$ denotes the independent domination number of $G$. Extending a result by the second author, who verified Aharoni's question in the affirmative for chordal graphs, we prove that the answer to the question is yes for all graphs. Namely, we show that for a graph $G$, the non-cover complex of a graph $G$ is $(|V(G)|-i γ(G)-1)$-collapsible.

On Star 5-Colorings of Sparse Graphs
A \textit{star $k$-coloring} of a graph $G$ is a proper (vertex) $k$-coloring of $G$ such that the vertices on a path of length three receive at least three colors. Given a graph $G$, its \textit{star chromatic number}, denoted $χ_s(G)$, is the minimum integer $k$ for which $G$ admits a star $k$-coloring. Studying star coloring of sparse graphs is an active area of research, especially in terms of the maximum average degree of a graph; the \textit{maximum average degree}, denoted $mad(G)$, of a graph $G$ is $\max\left\{ \frac{2|E(H)|}{|V(H)|}:{H \subset G}\right\}$. It is known that for a graph $G$, if $mad(G)<\frac{8}{3}$, then $χ_s(G)\leq 6$, and if $mad(G)< \frac{18}{7}$ and its girth is at least 6, then $χ_s(G)\le 5$. We improve both results by showing that for a graph $G$, if $mad(G)\le \frac{8}{3}$, then $χ_s(G)\le 5$. As an immediate corollary, we obtain that a planar graph with girth at least 8 has a star 5-coloring, improving the best known girth condition for a planar graph to have a star 5-coloring.
Largest 2-regular subgraphs in 3-regular graphs
For a graph $G$, let $f_2(G)$ denote the largest number of vertices in a $2$-regular subgraph of $G$. We determine the minimum of $f_2(G)$ over $3$-regular $n$-vertex simple graphs $G$. To do this, we prove that every $3$-regular multigraph with exactly $c$ cut-edges has a $2$-regular subgraph that omits at most $\max\{0,\lfloor (c-1)/2\rfloor\}$ vertices. More generally, every $n$-vertex multigraph with maximum degree $3$ and $m$ edges has a $2$-regular subgraph that omits at most $\max\{0,\lfloor (3n-2m+c-1)/2\rfloor\}$ vertices. These bounds are sharp; we describe the extremal multigraphs.

Maximum $k$-sum $\mathbf{n}$-free sets of the 2-dimensional integer lattice
For a positive integer $n$, let $[n]$ denote $\{1, \ldots, n\}$. For a 2-dimensional integer lattice point $\mathbf{b}$ and positive integers $k\geq 2$ and $n$, a \textit{$k$-sum $\mathbf{b}$-free set} of $[n]\times [n]$ is a subset $S$ of $[n]\times [n]$ such that there are no elements ${\mathbf{a}}_1, \ldots, {\mathbf{a}}_k$ in $S$ satisfying ${\mathbf{a}}_1+\cdots+{\mathbf{a}}_k =\mathbf{b}$. For a 2-dimensional integer lattice point $\mathbf{b}$ and positive integers $k\geq 2$ and $n$, we determine the maximum density of a {$k$-sum $\mathbf{b}$-free set} of $[n]\times [n]$. This is the first investigation of the non-homogeneous sum-free set problem in higher dimensions.

Online Ramsey theory for a triangle on $F$-free graphs
Published in J. Graph Theory, 92(2):152-171, October 2019 • View PublicationBIB
Given a class $\mathcal{C}$ of graphs and a fixed graph $H$, the online Ramsey game for $H$ on $\mathcal C$ is a game between two players Builder and Painter as follows: an unbounded set of vertices is given as an initial state, and on each turn Builder introduces a new edge with the constraint that the resulting graph must be in $\mathcal C$, and Painter colors the new edge either red or blue. Builder wins the game if Painter is forced to make a monochromatic copy of $H$ at some point in the game. Otherwise, Painter can avoid creating a monochromatic copy of $H$ forever, and we say Painter wins the game. We initiate the study of characterizing the graphs $F$ such that for a given graph $H$, Painter wins the online Ramsey game for $H$ on $F$-free graphs. We characterize all graphs $F$ such that Painter wins the online Ramsey game for $C_3$ on the class of $F$-free graphs, except when $F$ is one particular graph. We also show that Painter wins the online Ramsey game for $C_3$ on the class of $K_4$-minor-free graphs, extending a result by Grytczuk, Hałuszczak, and Kierstead.

Characterization of forbidden subgraphs for bounded star chromatic number
Published • View PublicationBIB
The chromatic number of a graph is the minimum $k$ such that the graph has a proper $k$-coloring. There are many coloring parameters in the literature that are proper colorings that also forbid bicolored subgraphs. Some examples are $2$-distance coloring, acyclic coloring, and star coloring, which forbid a bicolored path on three vertices, bicolored cycles, and a bicolored path on four vertices, respectively. This notion was first suggested by Grünbaum in 1973, but no specific name was given. We revive this notion by defining an $H$-avoiding $k$-coloring to be a proper $k$-coloring that forbids a bicolored subgraph $H$. When considering the class $\mathcal C$ of graphs with no $F$ as an induced subgraph, it is not hard to see that every graph in $\mathcal C$ has bounded chromatic number if and only if $F$ is a complete graph of size at most two. We study this phenomena for the class of graphs with no $F$ as a subgraph for $H$-avoiding coloring. We completely characterize all graphs $F$ where the class of graphs with no $F$ as a subgraph has bounded $H$-avoiding chromatic number for a large class of graphs $H$. As a corollary, our main result implies a characterization of graphs $F$ where the class of graphs with no $F$ as a subgraph has bounded star chromatic number. We also obtain a complete characterization for the acyclic chromatic number.

Inducibility of directed paths

A long standing open problem in extremal graph theory is to describe all graphs that maximize the number of induced copies of a path on four vertices. The character of the problem changes in the setting of oriented graphs, and becomes more tractable. Here we resolve this problem in the setting of oriented graphs without transitive triangles.

On operations preserving semi-transitive orientability of graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider the class of semi-transitively orientable graphs, which is a much larger class of graphs compared to transitively orientable graphs, in other words, comparability graphs. Ever since the concept of a semi-transitive orientation was defined as a crucial ingredient of the characterization of alternation graphs, also knownas word-representable graphs, it has sparked independent interest. In this paper, we investigate graph operations and graph products that preserve semitransitive orientability of graphs. The main theme of this paper is to determine which graph operations satisfy the following statement: if a graph operation is possible on a semitransitively orientable graph, then the same graph operation can be executed on the graph while preserving the semi-transitive orientability. We were able to prove that this statement is true for edge-deletions, edge-additions, and edge-liftings. Moreover, for all three graph operations,we showthat the initial semi-transitive orientation can be extended to the new graph obtained by the graph operation. Also, Kitaev and Lozin explicitly asked if certain graph products preserve the semitransitive orientability. We answer their question in the negative for the tensor product, lexicographic product, and strong product. We also push the investigation further and initiate the study of sufficient conditions that guarantee a certain graph operation to preserve the semi-transitive orientability.
A Ramsey-type theorem for the matching number regarding connected graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A major line of research is discovering Ramsey-type theorems, which are results of the following form: given a graph parameter $ρ$, every graph $G$ with sufficiently large $ρ(G)$ contains a `well-structured' induced subgraph $H$ with large $ρ(H)$. The classical Ramsey's theorem deals with the case when the graph parameter under consideration is the number of vertices; there is also a Ramsey-type theorem regarding connected graphs. Given a graph $G$, the matching number and the induced matching number of $G$ is the maximum size of a matching and an induced matching, respectively, of $G$. In this paper, we formulate Ramsey-type theorems for the matching number and the induced matching number regarding connected graphs. Along the way, we obtain a Ramsey-type theorem for the independence number regarding connected graphs as well.

Degeneracy and Colorings of Squares of Planar Graphs without 4-Cycles
Published in Combinatorica. Vol. 40(5), 2020, pp. 625-653 • View PublicationBIB
We prove several results on coloring squares of planar graphs without 4-cycles. First, we show that if $G$ is such a graph, then $G^2$ is $(Δ(G)+72)$-degenerate. This implies an upper bound of $Δ(G)+73$ on the chromatic number of $G^2$ as well as on several variants of the chromatic number such as the list-chromatic number, paint number, Alon--Tarsi number, and correspondence chromatic number. We also show that if $Δ(G)$ is sufficiently large, then the upper bounds on each of these parameters of $G^2$ can all be lowered to $Δ(G)+2$ (which is best possible). To complement these results, we show that 4-cycles are unique in having this property. Specifically, let $S$ be a finite list of positive integers, with $4\notin S$. For each constant $C$, we construct a planar graph $G_{S,C}$ with no cycle with length in $S$, but for which $χ(G_{S,C}^2) > Δ(G_{S,C})+C$.

Characterization of cycle obstruction sets for improper coloring planar graphs

For nonnegative integers $k, d_1, \ldots, d_k$, a graph is $(d_1, \ldots, d_k)$-colorable if its vertex set can be partitioned into $k$ parts so that the $i$th part induces a graph with maximum degree at most $d_i$ for all $i\in\{1, \ldots, k\}$. A class $\mathcal C$ of graphs is {\it balanced $k$-partitionable} and {\it unbalanced $k$-partitionable} if there exists a nonnegative integer $D$ such that all graphs in $\mathcal C$ are $(D, \ldots, D)$-colorable and $(0, \ldots, 0, D)$-colorable, respectively, where the tuple has length $k$. A set $X$ of cycles is a {\it cycle obstruction set} of a class $\mathcal C$ of planar graphs if every planar graph containing none of the cycles in $X$ as a subgraph belongs to $\mathcal C$. This paper characterizes all cycle obstruction sets of planar graphs to be balanced $k$-partitionable and unbalanced $k$-partitionable for all $k$; namely, we identify all inclusion-wise minimal cycle obstruction sets for all $k$.

Strong edge-colorings of sparse graphs with large maximum degree
Published • View PublicationBIB
A {\em strong $k$-edge-coloring} of a graph $G$ is a mapping from $E(G)$ to $\{1,2,\ldots,k\}$ such that every two adjacent edges or two edges adjacent to the same edge receive distinct colors. The {\em strong chromatic index} $χ_s'(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the smallest integer $k$ such that $G$ admits a strong $k$-edge-coloring. We give bounds on $χ_s'(G)$ in terms of the maximum degree $Δ(G)$ of a graph $G$. when $G$ is sparse, namely, when $G$ is $2$-degenerate or when the maximum average degree ${\rm Mad}(G)$ is small. We prove that the strong chromatic index of each $2$-degenerate graph $G$ is at most $5Δ(G) +1$. Furthermore, we show that for a graph $G$, if ${\rm Mad}(G)< 8/3$ and $Δ(G)\geq 9$, then $χ_s'(G)\leq 3Δ(G) -3$ (the bound $3Δ(G) -3$ is sharp) and if ${\rm Mad}(G)<3$ and $Δ(G)\geq 7$, then $χ_s'(G)\leq 3Δ(G)$ (the restriction ${\rm Mad}(G)<3$ is sharp).
