Sieving with square conditions and applications to Hilbert cubes in arithmetic sets
The purpose of this paper is twofold: 1) Applications of Gallagher's larger sieve modulo prime squares do not work. In some relevant cases we can transform the residue class information modulo $p^2$ to more suitable residue information modulo $p$, so that we can successfully apply the sieve. 2) The applications to Hilbert cubes are of interest in their own right: We study the maximal dimension of Hilbert cubes in various multiplicatively defined sets. For the squareful numbers in $[1,N]$ we achieve an upper bound of the dimension of $d=O(\log N)$. The same upper bounds follow for multiplicative semigroups of integers defined by a positive proportion of the primes, and the set of integers representable by an irreducible positive definite binary quadratic form. Eventually, making use of the sun flower lemma we give an improvement on the maximal dimension $d$ of subset sums in the set of pure powers in $[1,N]$.

We investigate additive properties of sets $A,$ where $A=\{a_1,a_2,\ldots ,a_k\}$ is a monotone increasing set of real numbers, and the differences of consecutive elements are all distinct. It is known that $|A+B|\geq c|A||B|^{1/2}$ for any finite set of numbers $B.$ The bound is tight up to the constant multiplier. We give a new proof to this result using bounds on crossing numbers of geometric graphs. We construct examples showing the limits of possible improvements. In particular, we show that there are arbitrarily large sets with different consecutive differences and sub-quadratic sumset sizes.
On sums and products along the edges, II
This note is a continuation of an earlier paper by the authors. We describe improved constructions addressing a question of Erdős and Szemerédi on sums and products of real numbers along the edges of a graph. We also add a few observations about related versions of the problem.

Let $d$ be a positive integer and $U \subset \mathbb{Z}^d$ finite. We study $$β(U) : = \inf_{\substack{A , B \neq \emptyset \\ \text{finite}}} \frac{|A+B+U|}{|A|^{1/2}{|B|^{1/2}}},$$ and other related quantities. We employ tensorization, which is not available for the doubling constant, $|U+U|/|U|$. For instance, we show $$β(U) = |U|,$$ whenever $U$ is a subset of $\{0,1\}^d$. Our methods parallel those used for the Prékopa-Leindler inequality, an integral variant of the Brunn-Minkowski inequality.
A Weighted Prékopa-Leindler inequality and sumsets with quasicubes

We give a short, self-contained proof of two key results from a paper of four of the authors. The first is a kind of weighted discrete Prékopa-Leindler inequality. This is then applied to show that if $A, B \subseteq \mathbb{Z}^d$ are finite sets and $U$ is a subset of a "quasicube" then $|A + B + U| \geq |A|^{1/2} |B|^{1/2} |U|$. This result is a key ingredient in forthcoming work of the fifth author and Pälvölgyi on the sum-product phenomenon.

We show that if $A=\{a_1 < a_2 < \ldots < a_k\}$ is a set of real numbers such that the differences of the consecutive elements are distinct, then for and finite $B \subset \mathbb{R}$, $$|A+B|\gg |A|^{1/2}|B|.$$ The bound is tight up to the constant.

In their seminal paper Erdős and Szemerédi formulated conjectures on the size of sumset and product set of integers. The strongest form of their conjecture is about sums and products along the edges of a graph. In this paper we show that this strong form of the Erdős-Szemerédi conjecture does not hold. We give upper and lower bounds on the cardinalities of sumsets, product sets and ratio sets along the edges of graphs.

The arithmetic Kakeya conjecture, formulated by Katz and Tao in 2002, is a statement about addition of finite sets. It is known to imply a form of the Kakeya conjecture, namely that the upper Minkowski dimension of a Besicovitch set in $\mathbb{R}^n$ is $n$. In this note we discuss this conjecture, giving a number of equivalent forms of it. We show that a natural finite field variant of it does hold. We also give some lower bounds.

Let A be a finite set of integers. For a polynomial f(x_1,...,x_n) with integer coefficients, let f(A) = {f(a_1,...,a_n) : a_1,...,a_n \in A}. In this paper it is proved that for every pair of normalized binary linear forms f(x,y)=u_1x+v_1y and g(x,y)=u_2x+v_2y with integral coefficients, there exist arbitrarily large finite sets of integers A and B such that |f(A)| > |g(A)| and |f(B)| < |g(B)|.
