An Orientation-Sensitive Vassiliev Invariant for Virtual Knots
Published • View PublicationBIB
It is an open question whether there are Vassiliev invariants that can distinguish an oriented knot from its inverse, i.e., the knot with the opposite orientation. In this article, an example is given for a first order Vassiliev invariant that takes different values on a virtual knot and its inverse. The Vassiliev invariant is derived from the Conway polynomial for virtual knots. Furthermore, it is shown that the zeroth order Vassiliev invariant coming from the Conway polynomial cannot distinguish a virtual link from its inverse and that it vanishes for virtual knots.

On a Planarity Criterion Coming from Knot Theory
A graph G is called "minimalizable" if a diagram with minimal crossing number can be obtained from an arbitrary diagram of G by crossing changes. If, furthermore, the minimal diagram is unique up to crossing changes then G is called "strongly minimalizable". In this article, it is explained how minimalizability of a graph is related to its automorphism group and it is shown that a graph is strongly minimalizable if the automorphism group is trivial or isomorphic to a product of symmetric groups. Then, the treatment of crossing number problems in graph theory by knot theoretical means is discussed and, as an example, a planarity criterion for minimalizable graphs is given.

On Alexander-Conway Polynomials for Virtual Knots and Links
A polynomial invariant of virtual links, arising from an invariant of links in thickened surfaces introduced by Jaeger, Kauffman, and Saleur, is defined and its properties are investigated. Examples are given that the invariant can detect chirality and even non-invertibility of virtual knots and links. Furthermore, it is shown that the polynomial satisfies a Conway-type skein relation - in contrast to the Alexander polynomial derived from the virtual link group.

Tait's Flyping Conjecture for 4-Regular Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Tait's flyping conjecture, stating that two reduced, alternating, prime link diagrams can be connected by a finite sequence of flypes, is extended to reduced, alternating, prime diagrams of 4-regular graphs in S^3. The proof of this version of the flyping conjecture is based on the fact that the equivalence classes with respect to ambient isotopy and rigid vertex isotopy of graph embeddings are identical on the class of diagrams considered.
