Asymptotic normality arising in Baxter permutations
Baxter permutations arose in the study of fixed points of the composite of commuting functions by Glen Baxter in 1964. This type of permutations are counted by Baxter numbers $B_n$. It turns out that $B_n$ enumerate a lot of discrete objects such as the bases for subalgebras of the Malvenuto-Reutenauer Hopf algebra, the pairs of twin binary trees on $n$ nodes, or the diagonal rectangulations of an $n\times n$ grid. The refined Baxter number $D_{n,k}$ also count many interesting objects including the Baxter permutations of $n$ with $k-1$ descents and $n-k$ rises, twin pairs of binary trees with $k$ left leaves and $n-k+1$ right leaves, or plane bipolar orientations with $k+1$ faces and $n-k+2$ vertices. In this paper, we obtain the asymptotic normality of the refined Baxter number $D_{n,k}$ by using a sufficient condition due to Bender. In the course of our proof, the computation involving $B_n$ and some related numbers is crucial, while $B_n$ has no closed form which make the computation untractable. To address this problem, we employ the method of asymptotics of the solutions of linear recurrence equations. Our proof is semi-automatic. All the asymptotic expansions and recurrence relations are proved by utilizing symbolic computation packages.
Analytic properties of Speyer's $g$-polynomial of uniform matroids
Let $U_{n,d}$ denote the uniform matroid of rank $d$ on $n$ elements. We obtain some recurrence relations satisfied by Speyer's $g$-polynomials $g_{U_{n,d}}(t)$ of $U_{n,d}$. Based on these recurrence relations, we prove that the polynomial $g_{U_{n,d}}(t)$ has only real zeros for any $n-1\geq d\geq 1$. Furthermore, we show that the coefficient of $g_{U_{n,[n/2]}}(t)$ is asymptotically normal by local and central limit theorems.
The Briggs inequality of Boros-Moll sequences
Briggs conjectured that if a polynomial $a_0+a_1x+\cdots+a_nx^n$ with real coefficients has only negative zeros, then $$a^2_k(a^2_k - a_{k-1}a_{k+1}) > a^2_{k-1}(a^2_{k+1} - a_ka_{k+2})$$ for any $1\leq k\leq n-1$. The Boros-Moll sequence $\{d_i(m)\}_{i=0}^m$ arises in the study of evaluation of certain quartic integral, and a lot of interesting inequalities for this sequence have been obtained. In this paper we show that the Boros-Moll sequence $\{d_i(m)\}_{i=0}^m$, its normalization $\{d_i(m)/i!\}_{i=0}^m$, and its transpose $\{d_i(m)\}_{m\ge i}$ satisfy the Briggs inequality. For the first two sequences, we prove the Briggs inequality by using a lower bound for $(d_{i-1}(m)d_{i+1}(m))/d_i^2(m)$ due to Chen and Gu and an upper bound due to Zhao. For the transposed sequence, we derive the Briggs inequality by establishing its strict ratio-log-convexity. As a consequence, we also obtain the strict log-convexity of the sequence $\{\sqrt[n]{d_i(i+n)}\}_{n\ge 1}$ for $i\ge 1$.

Recently, the higher order Turán inequalities for the Boros-Moll sequences $\{d_\ell(m)\}_{\ell=0}^m$ were obtained by Guo. In this paper, we show a different approach to this result. Our proof is based on a criterion derived by Hou and Li, which need only checking four simple inequalities related to sufficiently sharp bounds for $d_\ell(m)^2/(d_{\ell-1}(m)d_{\ell+1}(m))$. In order to do so, we adopt the upper bound given by Chen and Gu in studying the reverse ultra log-concavity of Boros-Moll polynomials, and establish a desired lower bound for $d_\ell(m)^2/(d_{\ell-1}(m)d_{\ell+1}(m))$ which also implies the log-concavity of $\{\ell! d_\ell(m)\}_{\ell=0}^m$ for $m\geq 2$. We also show a sharper lower bound for $d_\ell(m)^2/(d_{\ell-1}(m)d_{\ell+1}(m))$ which may be available for some deep results on inequalities of Boros-Moll sequences.
