We present progress on three old conjectures about longest paths and cycles in graphs. The first pair of conjectures, due to Lovász from 1969 and Thomassen from 1978, respectively, states that all connected vertex-transitive graphs contain a Hamiltonian path, and that all sufficiently large such graphs even contain a Hamiltonian cycle. The third conjecture, due to Smith from 1984, states that for $r\ge 2$ in every $r$-connected graph any two longest cycles intersect in at least $r$ vertices. In this paper, we prove a new lemma about the intersection of longest cycles in a graph which can be used to improve the best known bounds towards all the aforementioned conjectures: First, we show that every connected vertex-transitive graph on $n\geq 3$ vertices contains a cycle (and hence path) of length at least $Ω(n^{13/21})$, improving on $Ω(n^{3/5})$ from [DeVos, \emph{arXiv:2302:04255}, 2023]. Second, we show that in every $r$-connected graph with $r\geq 2$, any two longest cycles meet in at least $Ω(r^{5/8})$ vertices, improving on $Ω(r^{3/5})$ from [Chen, Faudree and Gould, \emph{J. Combin. Theory, Ser.~ B}, 1998]. Our proof combines combinatorial arguments, computer-search and linear programming.

We show that the twin-width of every $n$-vertex $d$-regular graph is at most $n^{\frac{d-2}{2d-2}+o(1)}$ and that almost all $d$-regular graphs attain this bound. More generally, we obtain bounds on the twin-width of sparse Erdős-Renyi and regular random graphs, complementing the bounds in the denser regime due to Ahn, Chakraborti, Hendrey, Kim and Oum.

We prove Menger-type results in which the obtained paths are pairwise non-adjacent, both for graphs of bounded maximum degree and, more generally, for graphs excluding a topological minor. We further show better bounds in the subcubic case, and in particular obtain a tight result for two paths using a computer-assisted proof.

Motivated by Hadwiger's conjecture, we study the problem of finding the densest possible $t$-vertex minor in graphs of average degree at least $t-1$. We show that if $G$ has average degree at least $t-1$, it contains a minor on $t$ vertices with at least $(\sqrt{2}-1-o(1))\binom{t}{2}$ edges. We show that this cannot be improved beyond $\left(\frac{3}{4}+o(1)\right)\binom{t}{2}$. Finally, for $t\leq 6$ we exactly determine the number of edges we are guaranteed to find in the densest $t$-vertex minor in graphs of average degree at least $t-1$.

Motivated by Hadwiger's conjecture, Seymour asked which graphs $H$ have the property that every non-null graph $G$ with no $H$ minor has a vertex of degree at most $|V(H)|-2$. We show that for every monotone graph family $\mathcal{F}$ with strongly sublinear separators, all sufficiently large bipartite graphs $H \in \mathcal{F}$ with bounded maximum degree have this property. None of the conditions that $H$ belongs to $\mathcal{F}$, that $H$ is bipartite and that $H$ has bounded maximum degree can be omitted.

Andreae (1986) proved that the cop number of connected $H$-minor-free graphs is bounded for every graph $H$. In particular, the cop number is at most $|E(H-h)|$ if $H-h$ contains no isolated vertex, where $h\in V(H)$. The main result of this paper is an improvement on this bound, which is most significant when $H$ is small or sparse, for instance when $H-h$ can be obtained from another graph by multiple edge subdivisions. Some consequences of this result are improvements on the upper bound for the cop number of $K_{3,t}$-minor-free graphs, $K_{2,t}$-minor-free graphs and linklessly embeddable graphs.

We prove that every connected $P_5$-free graph has cop number at most two, solving a conjecture of Sivaraman. In order to do so, we first prove that every connected $P_5$-free graph $G$ with independence number at least three contains a three-vertex induced path with vertices $a \hbox{-} b \hbox{-} c$ in order, such that every neighbour of $c$ is also adjacent to one of $a,b$.
The Burning Number Conjecture Holds Asymptotically

The burning number $b(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the smallest number of turns required to burn all vertices of a graph if at every turn a new fire is started and existing fires spread to all adjacent vertices. The Burning Number Conjecture of Bonato et al. (2016) postulates that $b(G)\leq \left\lceil\sqrt{n}\right\rceil$ for all graphs $G$ on $n$ vertices. We prove that this conjecture holds asymptotically, that is $b(G)\leq (1+o(1))\sqrt n$.

We show that the cop number of any graph on 18 or fewer vertices is at most 3. This answers a question posed by Andreae in 1986, as well as more recently by Baird et al. We also find all 3-cop-win graphs on 11 vertices, narrow down the possible 4-cop-win graphs on 19 vertices and make some progress on finding the minimum order of 3-cop-win planar graphs.

We prove that the cop number of any $2K_2$-free graph is at most 2, proving a conjecture of Sivaraman and Testa. We also show that the upper bound of $3$ on the cop number of $2K_1+K_2$-free (co-diamond--free) graphs is best possible.

We show that the cop number of directed and undirected Cayley graphs on abelian groups has an upper bound of the form of $O(\sqrt{n})$, where $n$ is the number of vertices, by introducing a refined inductive method. With our method, we improve the previous upper bound on cop number for undirected Cayley graphs on abelian groups, and we establish an upper bound on the cop number of directed Cayley graphs on abelian groups. We also use Cayley graphs on abelian groups to construct new \emph{Meyniel extremal families}, which contain graphs of every order $n$ with cop number $Θ(\sqrt{n})$.
