Spectral bounds for distance coloring and packing parameters of graphs via semidefinite programming
Using methods from spectral graph theory and semidefinite programming, we obtain sharp spectral bounds for several graph parameters related to distance colorings and packing, including the injective chromatic number, the open packing number, the injective chromatic index, and the strong chromatic index. The new spectral bounds improve several existing combinatorial bounds. Furthermore, we apply the obtained eigenvalue bounds on the first two parameters to estimate the code covering number and the open packing number of hypercubes, obtaining new exact values and strengthened bounds regarding the existing literature. The obtained results illustrate the power of combining spectral and semidefinite programming tools for tackling coloring and packing problems in graph theory and coding theory.

Spectral bounds for the independence number of graphs and even uniform hypergraphs
In this paper, we give spectral upper bounds for the independence number of even uniform hypergraphs and graphs, extend the Hoffman bound to even uniform hypergraphs, and give a simple spectral condition for determining the independence number, the Shannon capacity and the Lovász number of a graph. The Hoffman bound on the Lovász number is also extended from regular graphs to general graphs.

Spectral characterizations of local structures of graphs and hypergraphs
In this paper, we give the relationship between spectral radius and local structures of graphs and hypergraphs. Our work shows that certain local subgraphs (subhypergraphs) must occur when the spectral radius ratio is large. We also give spectral bounds on the local vector chromatic number in terms of tensor eigenvalues of graphs.

Perron-Frobenius theorem for dual tensors and its applications
The Perron-Frobenius theorem of nonnegative matrices is a classical result on spectral theory of matrices, which has wide applications in many domains. In this paper, we give the Perron-Frobenius theorem for dual tensors, that is, a dual tensor with weakly irreducible nonnegative standard part has a positive dual eigenvalue with a positive dual eigenvector. We give an explicit formula for the dual part of the positive dual eigenvector by using generalized inverses of an $M$-matrix. By considering the natural correspondence between tensors (matrices) and hypergraphs (graphs), some basic properties on the positive dual eigenvalue and positive dual eigenvector of hypergraphs are obtained. As applications, we introduce dual centrality measures for vertices of graphs and hypergraphs. By introducing a dual perturbation, vertices that are tied under eigenvector centrality can be effectively distinguished. In our numerical experiments, by perturbing specific structures, we successfully differentiated vertices in regular graphs and hypergraphs that were previously indistinguishable.

Unified bounds for the independence number of graph powers
For a graph $G$, its $k$-th power $G^k$ is constructed by placing an edge between two vertices if they are within distance $k$ of each other. The $k$-independence number $α_k(G)$ is defined as the independence number of $G^k$. By using general semidefinite programming and polynomial methods, we derive sharp bounds for the $k$-independence number of a graph, which extend and unify various existing results. Our work also allows us to easily derive some new bounds for $α_k(G)$.

Unified bounds for the independence number of graphs
Published in Can. J. Math.-J. Can. Math. 77 (2025) 97-117 • View PublicationBIB
The Hoffman ratio bound, Lovász theta function and Schrijver theta function are classical upper bounds for the independence number of graphs, which are useful in graph theory, extremal combinatorics and information theory. By using generalized inverses and eigenvalues of graph matrices, we give bounds for independence sets and the independence number of graphs. Our bounds unify the Lovász theta function, Schrijver theta function and Hoffman-type bounds, and we obtain the necessary and sufficient conditions of graphs attaining these bounds. Our work leads to some simple structural and spectral conditions for determining a maximum independent set, the independence number, the Shannon capacity and the Lovász theta function of a graph.

A combinatorial problem related to the classical probability

In the classical probability model, let $f(n)$ be the maximum number of pairwise independent events for the sample space with $n$ sample points. The determination of $f(n)$ is equivalent to the problem of determining the maximum cardinality of specific intersecting families on the set $\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$ . We show that $f(n)\leq n+1$, and $f(n)=n+1$ if there exists a Hadamard matrix of order $n$.

Spherical two-distance sets and graph eigenvalues
A set of unit vectors in $\mathbb{R}^d$ is a called a spherical two-distance set if the inner products of distinct vectors only take two values. In this paper, we give explicit correspondence between spherical two-distance sets and graphs with specific spectral properties, and derive some bounds on the maximum size of spherical two-distance sets.

An Erdős-Stone type result for high-order spectra of graphs
Erdős-Stone Theorem is a well-known result in extremal graph theory which determines the asymptotic behaviour of maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex $H$-free graph. In 2009, Nikiforov gave a spectral version of Erdős-Stone Theorem. In this paper, we obtain a tensor's spectral version of Erdős-Stone Theorem.

Oriented spanning trees and stationary distribution of digraphs
Published in Advances in Applied Mathematics 150 (2023) 102576 • View PublicationBIB
By using biclique partitions of digraphs, this paper gives reduction formulas for the number of oriented spanning trees, stationary distribution vector and Kemeny's constant of digraphs. As applications, we give a method for enumerating spanning trees of undirected graphs by vertex degrees and biclique partitions. The biclique partition formula also extends the results of Knuth and Levine from line digraphs to general digraphs.

Spectral radius and clique partitions of graphs
Published in Linear Algebra and its Applications 630 (2021), 84-94 • View PublicationBIB
We give lower bounds on the size and total size of clique partitions of a graph in terms of its spectral radius and minimum degree, and derive a spectral upper bound for the maximum number of edge-disjoint $t$-cliques. The extremal graphs attaining the bounds are exactly the block graphs of Steiner $2$-designs and the regular graphs with $K_t$-decompositions, respectively.

Inverse Perron values and connectivity of a uniform hypergraph
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we show that a uniform hypergraph $\mathcal{G}$ is connected if and only if one of its inverse Perron values is larger than $0$. We give some bounds on the bipartition width, isoperimetric number and eccentricities of $\mathcal{G}$ in terms of inverse Perron values. By using the inverse Perron values, we give an estimation of the edge connectivity of a $2$-design, and determine the explicit edge connectivity of a symmetric design. Moreover, relations between the inverse Perron values and resistance distance of a connected graph are presented.

Spectral properties of general hypergraphs

In this paper, we investigate spectral properties of the adjacency tensor, Laplacian tensor and signless Laplacian tensor of general hypergraphs (including uniform and non-uniform hypergraphs). We obtain some bounds for the spectral radius of general hypergraphs in terms of vertex degrees, and give spectral characterizations of odd-bipartite hypergraphs.

On the spectral radius of nonregular uniform hypergraphs
Let $G$ be a connected uniform hypergraphs with maximum degree $Δ$, spectral radius $λ$ and minimum H-eigenvalue $μ$. In this paper, we give some lower bounds for $Δ-λ$, which extend the result of [S.M. Cioabă, D.A. Gregory, V. Nikiforov, Extreme eigenvalues of nonregular graphs, J. Combin. Theory, Ser. B 97 (2007) 483-486] to hypergraphs. Applying these bounds, we also obtain a lower bound for $Δ+μ$.

Minimum (maximum) rank of tensors and the sign nonsingular tensors
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we define the minimum (maximum) rank, term rank and the sign nonsingular of tensors. The sufficiency and necessity for the minimum rank of a real tensor to be $1$ is given. And we show that the maximum rank of a tensor is not less than the term rank. We also prove that the minimum rank of a sign nonsingular tensor is not less than the dimension of it. And we get some characterizations of a tensor having sign left or sign right inverses.

Some spectral properties of uniform hypergraphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a $k$-uniform hypergraph $H$, we obtain some trace formulas for the Laplacian tensor of $H$, which imply that $\sum_{i=1}^nd_i^s$ ($s=1,\ldots,k$) is determined by the Laplacian spectrum of $H$, where $d_1,\ldots,d_n$ is the degree sequence of $H$. Using trace formulas for the Laplacian tensor, we obtain expressions for some coefficients of the Laplacian polynomial of a regular hypergraph. We give some spectral characterizations of odd-bipartite hypergraphs, and give a partial answer to a question posed by Shao et al \cite{ShaoShanWu}. We also give some spectral properties of power hypergraphs, and show that a conjecture posed by Hu et al \cite{HuQiShao} holds under certain conditons.

E-cospectral hypergraphs and some hypergraphs determined by their spectra
Published • View PublicationBIB
Two $k$-uniform hypergraphs are said to be cospectral (E-cospectral), if their adjacency tensors have the same characteristic polynomial (E-characteristic polynomial). A $k$-uniform hypergraph $H$ is said to be determined by its spectrum, if there is no other non-isomorphic $k$-uniform hypergraph cospectral with $H$. In this note, we give a method for constructing E-cospectral hypergraphs, which is similar with Godsil-McKay switching. Some hypergraphs are shown to be determined by their spectra.
