A Lovász Theta Parameter and Theta Body for Signed Graphs
We introduce a Lovász-type semidefinite parameter for balanced colouring of signed graphs. Its homomorphism target is a unit sphere equipped with an orthogonal involution: the fixed and anti-fixed components play different roles, while applying the involution to one endpoint realizes switching. The resulting parameter admits a symmetric formulation with two positive semidefinite matrices and an equally symmetric dual. It is also one half of the strict vector chromatic number of the ordinary graph formed by the negative edges of the double switching graph. Our second main contribution is a hierarchy of convex corners. Starting from the balanced induced subgraph polytope, we define signed analogues of the stable-set, theta, and clique-inequalities relaxations in the original vertex space. The signed theta body has an intrinsic two-matrix description, its all-ones gauge is the new scalar parameter, and the ordinary stable-set hierarchy is recovered exactly from signed digon graphs. For all-negative signatures, the construction becomes a relaxation of the maximum induced bipartite subgraph problem and is related to the generalized theta number. Finally, we propose a notion of balanced perfectness and show that it is strictly weaker than perfectness of the associated double-cover graph.
Tightness of a MaxCut Lower Bound via Vector Chromatic Number
Recently, Balla, Janzer, and Sudakov showed a lower bound on the MaxCut in terms of the vector chromatic number, recovering known results on the MaxCut of $H$-free graphs. In this note, we show that their bound is tight, providing a construction that achieves a value arbitrarily close to the optimal constant. This answers a question raised by Elphick. Our construction is a modification of the geometric graph used by Feige and Schechtman to establish the integrality gap for the Goemans--Williamson semidefinite relaxation of the MaxCut.
Tales of Hoffman: from a distance
Hoffman proved that a graph $G$ with adjacency eigenvalues $λ_1\geq \cdots \geq λ_n$ and chromatic number $χ(G)$ satisfies $χ(G)\geq 1+κ,$ where $κ$ is the smallest integer such that $$λ_1+\sum_{i=1}^κλ_{n+1-i}\leq 0.$$ We extend this eigenvalue bound to the distance-$k$ setting, and also show a strengthening of it by proving that it also lower bounds the corresponding quantum distance coloring graph parameter. The new bound depends on a degree-$k$ polynomial which can be chosen freely, so one needs to make a good choice of the polynomial to obtain as strong a bound as possible. We thus propose linear programming methods to optimize it. We also investigate the implications of the new bound for the quantum distance chromatic number, showing that it is sharp for some classes of graphs. Finally, we extend the Hoffman bound to the distance setting of the vector chromatic number. Our results extend and unify several previous bounds in the literature.
Spectral characterizations of local structures of graphs and hypergraphs
In this paper, we give the relationship between spectral radius and local structures of graphs and hypergraphs. Our work shows that certain local subgraphs (subhypergraphs) must occur when the spectral radius ratio is large. We also give spectral bounds on the local vector chromatic number in terms of tensor eigenvalues of graphs.
Conic programming to understand sums of squares of eigenvalues of graphs
In this paper we prove a conjecture by Wocjan, Elphick and Anekstein (2018) which upper bounds the sum of the squares of the positive (or negative) eigenvalues of the adjacency matrix of a graph by an expression that behaves monotonically in terms of the vector chromatic number. One of our lemmas is a strengthening of the Cauchy-Schwarz inequality for Hermitian matrices when one of the matrices is positive semidefinite.
A related conjecture due to Bollobás and Nikiforov (2007) replaces the vector chromatic number by the clique number and sums over the first two eigenvalues only. We prove a version of this conjecture with weaker constants. An important consequence of our work is a proof that for any fixed $r$, computing a rank $r$ optimum solution to the vector chromatic number semidefinite programming is NP-hard.
We also present a vertex weighted version of some of our results, and we show how it leads quite naturally to the known vertex-weighted version of the Motzkin-Straus quadratic optimization formulation for the clique number.

This paper delves into three research directions, leveraging the Lovász $\vartheta$-function of a graph. First, it focuses on the Shannon capacity of graphs, providing new results that determine the capacity for two infinite subclasses of strongly regular graphs, and extending prior results. The second part explores cospectral and nonisomorphic graphs, drawing on a work by Berman and Hamud (2024), and it derives related properties of two types of joins of graphs. For every even integer such that $n \geq 14$, it is constructively proven that there exist connected, irregular, cospectral, and nonisomorphic graphs on $n$ vertices, being jointly cospectral with respect to their adjacency, Laplacian, signless Laplacian, and normalized Laplacian matrices, while also sharing identical independence, clique, and chromatic numbers, but being distinguished by their Lovász $\vartheta$-functions. The third part focuses on establishing bounds on graph invariants, particularly emphasizing strongly regular graphs and triangle-free graphs, and compares the tightness of these bounds to existing ones. The paper derives spectral upper and lower bounds on the vector and strict vector chromatic numbers of regular graphs, providing sufficient conditions for the attainability of these bounds. Exact closed-form expressions for the vector and strict vector chromatic numbers are derived for all strongly regular graphs and for all graphs that are vertex- and edge-transitive, demonstrating that these two types of chromatic numbers coincide for every such graph. This work resolves a query regarding the variant of the $\vartheta$-function by Schrijver and the identical function by McEliece et al. It shows, by a counterexample, that the $\vartheta$-function variant by Schrijver does not possess the property of the Lovász $\vartheta$-function of forming an upper bound on the Shannon capacity of a graph.
Orthonormal representations, vector chromatic number, and extension complexity
We construct a bipartite generalization of Alon and Szegedy's nearly orthogonal vectors, thereby obtaining strong bounds for several extremal problems involving the Lovász theta function, vector chromatic number, minimum semidefinite rank, nonnegative rank, and extension complexity of polytopes. In particular, we derive a couple of general lower bounds for the vector chromatic number which may be of independent interest.
Sums of squares of eigenvalues and the vector chromatic number
In this short paper we prove that the sum of the squares of negative (or positive) eigenvalues of the adjacency matrix of a graph is lower bounded by the sum of the degrees divided by the vector chromatic number, resolving a conjecture by Wocjan, Elphick and Anekstein (2018).

The independence number, coloring number and related parameters are investigated in the setting of oriented hypergraphs using the spectrum of the normalized Laplace operator. For the independence number, both an inertia--like bound and a ratio--like bound are shown. A Sandwich Theorem involving the clique number, the vector chromatic number and the coloring number is proved, as well as a lower bound for the vector chromatic number in terms of the smallest and the largest eigenvalue of the normalized Laplacian. In addition, spectral partition numbers are studied in relation to the coloring number.
Vector Colorings of Random, Ramanujan, and Large-Girth Irregular Graphs
We prove that in sparse Erdős-Rényi graphs of average degree $d$, the vector chromatic number (the relaxation of chromatic number coming from the Lovàsz theta function) is typically $\tfrac{1}{2}\sqrt{d} + o_d(1)$. This fits with a long-standing conjecture that various refutation and hypothesis-testing problems concerning $k$-colorings of sparse Erdős-Rényi graphs become computationally intractable below the `Kesten-Stigum threshold' $d_{KS,k} = (k-1)^2$. Along the way, we use the celebrated Ihara-Bass identity and a carefully constructed non-backtracking random walk to prove two deterministic results of independent interest: a lower bound on the vector chromatic number (and thus the chromatic number) using the spectrum of the non-backtracking walk matrix, and an upper bound dependent only on the girth and universal cover. Our upper bound may be equivalently viewed as a generalization of the Alon-Boppana theorem to irregular graphs
More Tales of Hoffman: bounds for the vector chromatic number of a graph
Let $χ(G)$ denote the chromatic number of a graph and $χ_v(G)$ denote the vector chromatic number. For all graphs $χ_v(G) \le χ(G)$ and for some graphs $χ_v(G) \ll χ(G)$. Galtman proved that Hoffman's well-known lower bound for $χ(G)$ is in fact a lower bound for $χ_v(G)$. We prove that two more spectral lower bounds for $χ(G)$ are also lower bounds for $χ_v(G)$. We then use one of these bounds to derive a new characterization of $χ_v(G)$.
Vector Coloring the Categorical Product of Graphs

A vector $t$-coloring of a graph is an assignment of real vectors $p_1, \ldots, p_n$ to its vertices such that $p_i^Tp_i = t-1$ for all $i=1, \ldots, n$ and $p_i^Tp_j \le -1$ whenever $i$ and $j$ are adjacent. The vector chromatic number of $G$ is the smallest real number $t \ge 1$ for which a vector $t$-coloring of $G$ exists. For a graph $H$ and a vector $t$-coloring $p_1,\ldots,p_n$ of a graph $G$, the assignment $(i,\ell) \mapsto p_i$ is a vector $t$-coloring of the categorical product $G \times H$. It follows that the vector chromatic number of $G \times H$ is at most the minimum of the vector chromatic numbers of the factors. We prove that equality always holds, constituting a vector coloring analog of the famous Hedetniemi Conjecture from graph coloring. Furthermore, we prove a necessary and sufficient condition for when all of the optimal vector colorings of the product can be expressed in terms of the optimal vector colorings of the factors. The vector chromatic number is closely related to the well-known Lovász theta function, and both of these parameters admit formulations as semidefinite programs. This connection to semidefinite programming is crucial to our work and the tools and techniques we develop could likely be of interest to others in this field.
Graph Homomorphisms via Vector Colorings

In this paper we study the existence of homomorphisms $G\to H$ using semidefinite programming. Specifically, we use the vector chromatic number of a graph, defined as the smallest real number $t \ge 2$ for which there exists an assignment of unit vectors $i\mapsto p_i$ to its vertices such that $\langle p_i, p_j\rangle\le -1/(t-1),$ when $i\sim j$. Our approach allows to reprove, without using the Erdős-Ko-Rado Theorem, that for $n>2r$ the Kneser graph $K_{n:r}$ and the $q$-Kneser graph $qK_{n:r}$ are cores, and furthermore, that for $n/r = n'/r'$ there exists a homomorphism $K_{n:r}\to K_{n':r'}$ if and only if $n$ divides $n'$. In terms of new applications, we show that the even-weight component of the distance $k$-graph of the $n$-cube $H_{n,k}$ is a core and also, that non-bipartite Taylor graphs are cores. Additionally, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of homomorphisms $H_{n,k}\to H_{n',k'}$ when $n/k = n'/k'$. Lastly, we show that if a 2-walk-regular graph (which is non-bipartite and not complete multipartite) has a unique optimal vector coloring, it is a core. Based on this sufficient condition we conducted a computational study on Ted Spence's list of strongly regular graphs and found that at least 84% are cores.

Let $χ(G$) and $χ_f(G)$ denote the chromatic and fractional chromatic numbers of a graph $G$, and let $(n^+ , n^0 , n^-)$ denote the inertia of $G$. We prove that:
\[ 1 + \max\left(\frac{n^+}{n^-} , \frac{n^-}{n^+}\right) \le χ(G) \mbox{ and conjecture that } 1 + \max\left(\frac{n^+}{n^-} , \frac{n^-}{n^+}\right) \le χ_f(G) \]
We investigate extremal graphs for these bounds and demonstrate that this inertial bound is not a lower bound for the vector chromatic number. We conclude with a discussion of asymmetry between $n^+$ and $n^-$, including some Nordhaus-Gaddum bounds for inertia.

We investigate vector chromatic number, Lovasz theta of the complement, and quantum chromatic number from the perspective of graph homomorphisms. We prove an analog of Sabidussi's theorem for each of these parameters, i.e. that for each of the parameters, the value on the Cartesian product of graphs is equal to the maximum of the values on the factors. We also prove an analog of Hedetniemi's conjecture for Lovasz theta of the complement, i.e. that its value on the categorical product of graphs is equal to the minimum of its values on the factors. We conjecture that the analogous results hold for vector and quantum chromatic number, and we prove that this is the case for some special classes of graphs.
Cubical coloring -- fractional covering by cuts and semidefinite programming

We introduce a new graph invariant that measures fractional covering of a graph by cuts. Besides being interesting in its own right, it is useful for study of homomorphisms and tension-continuous mappings. We study the relations with chromatic number, bipartite density, and other graph parameters.
We find the value of our parameter for a family of graphs based on hypercubes. These graphs play for our parameter the role that circular cliques play for the circular chromatic number. The fact that the defined parameter attains on these graphs the `correct' value suggests that the definition is a natural one. In the proof we use the eigenvalue bound for maximum cut and a recent result of Engström, Färnqvist, Jonsson, and Thapper.
We also provide a polynomial time approximation algorithm based on semidefinite programming and in particular on vector chromatic number (defined by Karger, Motwani and Sudan [Approximate graph coloring by semidefinite programming, J. ACM 45 (1998), no. 2, 246--265]).
