On asymptotic local Turán problems
Published in Moscow J. Comb. Number Th. 12 (2023) 273-286 • View PublicationBIB
An $r$-uniform hypergraph has $(q,p)$-property if any set of $q$ vertices spans a complete sub-hypergraph on $p$ vertices. Let $t_r(n,q,p)$ be the minimum edge density of an $n$-vertex $r$-uniform hypergraph with {\em $(q,p)$-property} and let $t_r(q,p)=\lim_{n\to\infty}t_r(n,q,p)$. A disjoint union of $k$ complete hypergraphs has $(q,\lceil q/k\rceil)$-property, which gives $t_r((q,\lceil{q/k}\rceil))\le 1/k^{r-1}$. The first author, Huang and Rödl showed that these constructions are the best asymptotically, that is, $\lim_{q\to\infty}t_r((q,\lceil{q/k}\rceil))=1/k^{r-1}$. They asked whether it is true for all real number $γ\ge1$ that $\lim_{q\to\infty}t_r((q,\lceil{q/γ}\rceil))=1/\lfloorγ\rfloor^{r-1}$. In this paper, we give positive answers to this question for a small range of real numbers, and, on the other hand, provide new constructions that give negative answers for many other ranges.

On asymptotic packing of convex geometric and ordered graphs
Published in Journal of Graph Theory 104 (2023), 836-850 • View PublicationBIB
A convex geometric graph $G$ is said to be packable if there exist edge-disjoint copies of $G$ in the complete convex geometric graph $K_n$ covering all but $o(n^2)$ edges. We prove that every convex geometric graph with cyclic chromatic number at most $4$ is packable. With a similar definition of packability for ordered graphs, we prove that every ordered graph with interval chromatic number at most $3$ is packable. Arguments based on the average length of edges imply these results are best possible. We also identify a class of convex geometric graphs that are packable due to having many "long" edges.

On Turán numbers for disconnected hypergraphs
Published in Acta Mathematica Hungarica (2023) • View PublicationBIB
We introduce the following simpler variant of the Turán problem: Given integers $n>k>r\geq 2$ and $m\geq 1$, what is the smallest integer $t$ for which there exists an $r$-uniform hypergraph with $n$ vertices, $t$ edges and $m$ connected components such that any $k$-subset of the vertex set contains at least one edge? We prove some general estimates for this quantity and for its limit, normalized by $\binom{n}{r}$, as $n\rightarrow \infty$. Moreover, we give a complete solution of the problem for the particular case when $k=5$, $r=3$ and $m\geq 2$.
Odd Covers of Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a finite simple graph $G$, an odd cover of $G$ is a collection of complete bipartite graphs, or bicliques, in which each edge of $G$ appears in an odd number of bicliques and each non-edge of $G$ appears in an even number of bicliques. We denote the minimum cardinality of an odd cover of $G$ by $b_2(G)$ and prove that $b_2(G)$ is bounded below by half of the rank over $\mathbb{F}_2$ of the adjacency matrix of $G$. We show that this lower bound is tight in the case when $G$ is a bipartite graph and almost tight when $G$ is an odd cycle. However, we also present an infinite family of graphs which shows that this lower bound can be arbitrarily far away from $b_2(G)$. Babai and Frankl (1992) proposed the "odd cover problem," which in our language is equivalent to determining $b_2(K_n)$. Radhakrishnan, Sen, and Vishwanathan (2000) determined $b_2(K_n)$ for an infinite but density zero subset of positive integers $n$. In this paper, we determine $b_2(K_n)$ for a density $3/8$ subset of the positive integers.
On Asymptotic Packing of Geometric Graphs

A set of geometric graphs is {\em geometric-packable} if it can be asymptotically packed into every sequence of drawings of the complete graph $K_n$. For example, the set of geometric triangles is geometric-packable due to the existence of Steiner Triple Systems. When $G$ is the $4$-cycle (or $4$-cycle with a chord), we show that the set of plane drawings of $G$ is geometric-packable. In contrast, the analogous statement is false when $G$ is nearly any other planar Hamiltonian graph (with at most 3 possible exceptions). A convex geometric graph is {\em convex-packable} if it can be asymptotically packed into the convex drawings of the complete graphs. For each planar Hamiltonian graph $G$, we determine whether or not a plane $G$ is convex-packable. Many of our proofs explicitly construct these packings; in these cases, the packings exhibit a symmetry that mirrors the vertex transitivity of $K_n$.

Maximal independent sets in clique-free graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Nielsen proved that the maximum number of maximal independent sets (MIS's) of size $k$ in an $n$-vertex graph is asymptotic to $(n/k)^k$, with the extremal construction a disjoint union of $k$ cliques with sizes as close to $n/k$ as possible. In this paper we study how many MIS's of size $k$ an $n$-vertex graph $G$ can have if $G$ does not contain a clique $K_t$. We prove for all fixed $k$ and $t$ that there exist such graphs with $n^{\lfloor\frac{(t-2)k}{t-1}\rfloor-o(1)}$ MIS's of size $k$ by utilizing recent work of Gowers and B. Janzer on a generalization of the Ruzsa-Szemerédi problem. We prove that this bound is essentially best possible for triangle-free graphs when $k\le 4$.

Ramsey Numbers for Non-trivial Berge Cycles
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we consider an extension of cycle-complete graph Ramsey numbers to Berge cycles in hypergraphs: for $k \geq 2$, a {\em non-trivial Berge $k$-cycle} is a family of sets $e_1,e_2,\dots,e_k$ such that $e_1 \cap e_2, e_2 \cap e_3,\dots,e_k \cap e_1$ has a system of distinct representatives and $e_1 \cap e_2 \cap \dots \cap e_k = \emptyset$. In the case that all the sets $e_i$ have size three, let $\mathcal{B}_k$ denotes the family of all non-trivial Berge $k$-cycles. The {\em Ramsey numbers} $R(t,\mathcal{B}_k)$ denote the minimum $n$ such that every $n$-vertex $3$-uniform hypergraph contains either a non-trivial Berge $k$-cycle or an independent set of size $t$. We prove \[ R(t, \mathcal{B}_{2k}) \leq t^{1 + \frac{1}{2k-1} + \frac{4}{\sqrt{\log t}}}\] and moreover, we show that if a conjecture of Erdős and Simonovits \cite{ES} on girth in graphs is true, then this is tight up to a factor $t^{o(1)}$ as $t \rightarrow \infty$.

Randomized greedy algorithm for independent sets in regular uniform hypergraphs with large girth
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we consider a randomized greedy algorithm for independent sets in $r$-uniform $d$-regular hypergraphs $G$ on $n$ vertices with girth $g$. By analyzing the expected size of the independent sets generated by this algorithm, we show that $α(G)\geq (f(d,r)-ε(g,d,r))n$, where $ε(g,d,r)$ converges to $0$ as $g\rightarrow\infty$ for fixed $d$ and $r$, and $f(d,r)$ is determined by a differential equation. This extends earlier results of Gamarnik and Goldberg for graphs. We also prove that when applying this algorithm to uniform linear hypergraphs with bounded degree, the size of the independent sets generated by this algorithm concentrate around the mean asymptotically almost surely.

Triangle-free Subgraphs of Hypergraphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we consider an analog of the well-studied extremal problem for triangle-free subgraphs of graphs for uniform hypergraphs. A loose triangle is a hypergraph $T$ consisting of three edges $e,f$ and $g$ such that $|e \cap f| = |f \cap g| = |g \cap e| = 1$ and $e \cap f \cap g = \emptyset$. We prove that if $H$ is an $n$-vertex $r$-uniform hypergraph with maximum degree $\triangle$, then as $\triangle \rightarrow \infty$, the number of edges in a densest $T$-free subhypergraph of $H$ is at least \[ \frac{e(H)}{\triangle^{\frac{r-2}{r-1} + o(1)}}.\] For $r = 3$, this is tight up to the $o(1)$ term in the exponent. We also show that if $H$ is a random $n$-vertex triple system with edge-probability $p$ such that $pn^3\rightarrow\infty$ as $n\rightarrow\infty$, then with high probability as $n \rightarrow \infty$, the number of edges in a densest $T$-free subhypergraph is \[ \min\Bigl\{(1-o(1))p{n\choose3},p^{\frac{1}{3}}n^{2-o(1)}\Bigr\}.\] We use the method of containers together with probabilistic methods and a connection to the extremal problem for arithmetic progressions of length three due to Ruzsa and Szemerédi.
