Tree-independence number of $P_5$-free graphs with no large bicliques
The tree-independence number of a graph is the minimum, over all tree-decompositions of the graph, of the maximum size of an independent set contained in a bag. Graph classes of bounded tree-independence number have strong structural and algorithmic properties, but the parameter can be unbounded even in quite restricted classes. In particular, the presence of an induced biclique $K_{\ell,\ell}$ forces tree-independence number at least $\ell$. This leads to the question whether large induced bicliques are the only obstruction to bounded tree-independence number in natural hereditary classes. A conjecture of Dallard, Krnc, Kwon, Milanič, Munaro, Štorgel, and Wiederrecht states that for all positive integers $t$ and $\ell$, every $\{P_t,K_{\ell,\ell}\}$-free graph has bounded tree-independence number. We prove this conjecture for $t=5$ by showing that every $\{P_5,K_{\ell,\ell}\}$-free graph has tree-independence number at most $4\ell$. We also obtain related bounds for the weaker parameter of $α$-degeneracy.
Faithful universal graphs for minor-closed classes
It was proved by Huynh, Mohar, Šámal, Thomassen and Wood in 2021 that any countable graph containing every countable planar graph as a subgraph has an infinite clique minor. We prove a finite, quantitative version of this result: for fixed $t$, if a graph $G$ is $K_t$-minor-free and contains every $n$-vertex planar graph as a subgraph, then $G$ has $2^{Ω(n)}$ vertices. On the other hand, we construct a polynomial size $K_4$-minor-free graph containing every $n$-vertex tree as an induced subgraph, and a polynomial size $K_7$-minor-free graph containing every $n$-vertex $K_4$-minor-free graph as induced subgraph. This answers several problems raised recently by Bergold, Iršič, Lauff, Orthaber, Scheucher and Wesolek. We study more generally the order of universal graphs for various classes (of graphs of bounded degree, treedepth, pathwidth, or treewidth), if the universal graphs retain some of the structure of the original class.
Subgraph-universal planar graphs for trees
We show that there exists an outerplanar graph on $O(n^{c})$ vertices for $c = \log_2(3+\sqrt{10}) \approx 2.623$ that contains every tree on $n$ vertices as a subgraph. This extends a result of Chung and Graham from 1983 who showed that there exist (non-planar) $n$-vertex graphs with $O(n \log n)$ edges that contain all trees on $n$ vertices as subgraphs and a result from Gol'dberg and Livshits from 1968 who showed that there exists a universal tree for $n$-vertex trees on $n^{O(\log(n))}$ vertices. Furthermore, we determine the number of vertices needed in the worst case for a planar graph to contain three given trees as subgraph to be on the order of $\frac{3}{2}n$, even if the three trees are caterpillars. This answers a question recently posed by Alecu et al. in 2024. Lastly, we investigate (outer)planar graphs containing all (outer)planar graphs as subgraph, determining exponential lower bounds in both cases. We also construct a planar graph on $n^{O(\log(n))}$ vertices containing all $n$-vertex outerplanar graphs as subgraphs.
On the local resilience of random geometric graphs with respect to connectivity and long cycles
Given an increasing graph property $\mathcal{P}$, a graph $G$ is $α$-resilient with respect to $\mathcal{P}$ if, for every spanning subgraph $H\subseteq G$ where each vertex keeps more than a $(1-α)$-proportion of its neighbours, $H$ has property $\mathcal{P}$. We study the above notion of local resilience with $G$ being a random geometric graph $G_d(n,r)$ obtained by embedding $n$ vertices independently and uniformly at random in $[0,1]^d$, and connecting two vertices by an edge if the distance between them is at most $r$. First, we focus on connectivity. We show that, for every $\varepsilon>0$, for $r$ a constant factor above the sharp threshold for connectivity $r_c$ of $G_d(n,r)$, the random geometric graph is $(1/2-\varepsilon)$-resilient for the property of being $k$-connected, with $k$ of the same order as the expected degree. However, contrary to binomial random graphs, for sufficiently small $\varepsilon>0$, connectivity is not born $(1/2-\varepsilon)$-resilient in $2$-dimensional random geometric graphs. Second, we study local resilience with respect to the property of containing long cycles. We show that, for $r$ a constant factor above $r_c$, $G_d(n,r)$ is $(1/2-\varepsilon)$-resilient with respect to containing cycles of all lengths between constant and $2n/3$. Proving $(1/2-\varepsilon)$-resilience for Hamiltonicity remains elusive with our techniques. Nevertheless, we show that $G_d(n,r)$ is $α$-resilient with respect to Hamiltonicity for a fixed constant $α= α(d)<1/2$.

Cops and Robber on Hyperbolic Manifolds
The Cops and Robber game on geodesic spaces is a pursuit-evasion game with discrete steps which captures the behavior of the game played on graphs, as well as that of continuous pursuit-evasion games. One of the outstanding open problems about the game on graphs is to determine which graphs embeddable in a surface of genus $g$ have largest cop number. It is known that the cop number of genus $g$ graphs is $O(g)$ and that there are examples whose cop number is $\tildeΩ(\sqrt{g}\,)$. The same phenomenon occurs when the game is played on geodesic surfaces. In this paper we obtain a surprising result about the game on a surface with constant curvature. It is shown that two cops have a strategy to come arbitrarily close to the robber, independently of the genus. We also discuss upper bounds on the number of cops needed to catch the robber. Our results generalize to higher-dimensional hyperbolic manifolds.
A Note on the 2-Colored Rectilinear Crossing Number of Random Point Sets in the Unit Square
Let $S$ be a set of four points chosen independently, uniformly at random from a square. Join every pair of points of $S$ with a straight line segment. Color these edges red if they have positive slope and blue, otherwise. We show that the probability that $S$ defines a pair of crossing edges of the same color is equal to $1/4$. This is connected to a recent result of Aichholzer et al. [GD 2019] who showed that by 2-colouring the edges of a geometric graph and counting monochromatic crossings instead of crossings, the number of crossings can be more than halfed. Our result shows that for the described random drawings, there is a coloring of the edges such that the number of monochromatic crossings is in expectation $\frac{1}{2}-\frac{7}{50}$ of the total number of crossings.

On Minimizing the Energy of a Spherical Graph Representation
Graph representations are the generalization of geometric graph drawings from the plane to higher dimensions. A method introduced by Tutte to optimize properties of graph drawings is to minimize their energy. We explore this minimization for spherical graph representations, where the vertices lie on a unit sphere such that the origin is their barycentre. We present a primal and dual semidefinite program which can be used to find such a spherical graph representation minimizing the energy. We denote the optimal value of this program by $ρ(G)$ for a given graph $G$. The value turns out to be related to the second largest eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix of $G$, which we denote by $λ_2$. We show that for $G$ regular, $ρ(G) \leq \frac{λ_{2}}{2} \cdot v(G)$, and that equality holds if and only if the $λ_{2}$ eigenspace contains a spherical 1-design. Moreover, if $G$ is a random $d$-regular graph, $ρ(G)=\left(\sqrt{(d-1)} +o(1)\right)\cdot v(G)$, asymptotically almost surely.
Sharp threshold for embedding balanced spanning trees in random geometric graphs
A rooted tree is balanced if the degree of a vertex depends only on its distance to the root. In this paper we determine the sharp threshold for the appearance of a large family of balanced spanning trees in the random geometric graph $\mathcal{G}(n,r,d)$. In particular, we find the sharp threshold for balanced binary trees. More generally, we show that all sequences of balanced trees with uniformly bounded degrees and height tending to infinity appear above a sharp threshold, and none of these appears below the same value. Our results hold more generally for geometric graphs satisfying a mild condition on the distribution of their vertex set, and we provide a polynomial time algorithm to find such trees.
Maximum Independent Set when excluding an induced minor: $K_1 + tK_2$ and $tC_3 \uplus C_4$

Dallard, Milanič, and Štorgel [arXiv '22] ask if for every class excluding a fixed planar graph $H$ as an induced minor, Maximum Independent Set can be solved in polynomial time, and show that this is indeed the case when $H$ is any planar complete bipartite graph, or the 5-vertex clique minus one edge, or minus two disjoint edges. A positive answer would constitute a far-reaching generalization of the state-of-the-art, when we currently do not know if a polynomial-time algorithm exists when $H$ is the 7-vertex path. Relaxing tractability to the existence of a quasipolynomial-time algorithm, we know substantially more. Indeed, quasipolynomial-time algorithms were recently obtained for the $t$-vertex cycle, $C_t$ [Gartland et al., STOC '21] and the disjoint union of $t$ triangles, $tC_3$ [Bonamy et al., SODA '23]. We give, for every integer $t$, a polynomial-time algorithm running in $n^{O(t^5)}$ when $H$ is the friendship graph $K_1 + tK_2$ ($t$ disjoint edges plus a vertex fully adjacent to them), and a quasipolynomial-time algorithm running in $n^{O(t^2 \log n)+f(t)}$, with $f$ a single-exponential function, when $H$ is $tC_3 \uplus C_4$ (the disjoint union of $t$ triangles and a 4-vertex cycle). The former extends a classical result on graphs excluding $tK_2$ as an induced subgraph [Alekseev, DAM '07], while the latter extends Bonamy et al.'s result.

A note on highly connected $K_{2,\ell}$-minor free graphs
We show that every $3$-connected $K_{2,\ell}$-minor free graph with minimum degree at least $4$ has maximum degree at most $7\ell$. As a consequence, we show that every 3-connected $K_{2,\ell}$-minor free graph with minimum degree at least $5$ and no twins of degree $5$ has bounded size. Our proofs use Steiner trees and nested cuts; in particular, they do not rely on Ding's characterization of $K_{2,\ell}$-minor free graphs.
Every graph is eventually Turán-good

Let $H$ be a graph. We show that if $r$ is large enough as a function of $H$, then the $r$-partite Turán graph maximizes the number of copies of $H$ among all $K_{r+1}$-free graphs on a given number of vertices. This confirms a conjecture of Gerbner and Palmer.
Sparse graphs with bounded induced cycle packing number have logarithmic treewidth
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series B 167 (2024), 215-249 • View PublicationBIB
A graph is $\mathcal{O}_k$-free if it does not contain $k$ pairwise vertex-disjoint and non-adjacent cycles. We prove that "sparse" (here, not containing large complete bipartite graphs as subgraphs) $\mathcal{O}_k$-free graphs have treewidth (even, feedback vertex set number) at most logarithmic in the number of vertices. This is optimal, as there is an infinite family of $\mathcal{O}_2$-free graphs without $K_{2,3}$ as a subgraph and whose treewidth is (at least) logarithmic. Using our result, we show that Maximum Independent Set and 3-Coloring in $\mathcal{O}_k$-free graphs can be solved in quasi-polynomial time. Other consequences include that most of the central NP-complete problems (such as Maximum Independent Set, Minimum Vertex Cover, Minimum Dominating Set, Minimum Coloring) can be solved in polynomial time in sparse $\mathcal{O}_k$-free graphs, and that deciding the $\mathcal{O}_k$-freeness of sparse graphs is polynomial time solvable.
On Asymptotic Packing of Geometric Graphs
Published in Discrete Applied Math. Volume 322, 15 December 2022, Pages 142-152 • View PublicationBIB
A set of geometric graphs is {\em geometric-packable} if it can be asymptotically packed into every sequence of drawings of the complete graph $K_n$. For example, the set of geometric triangles is geometric-packable due to the existence of Steiner Triple Systems. When $G$ is the $4$-cycle (or $4$-cycle with a chord), we show that the set of plane drawings of $G$ is geometric-packable. In contrast, the analogous statement is false when $G$ is nearly any other planar Hamiltonian graph (with at most 3 possible exceptions). A convex geometric graph is {\em convex-packable} if it can be asymptotically packed into the convex drawings of the complete graphs. For each planar Hamiltonian graph $G$, we determine whether or not a plane $G$ is convex-packable. Many of our proofs explicitly construct these packings; in these cases, the packings exhibit a symmetry that mirrors the vertex transitivity of $K_n$.
A note on connected greedy edge colouring
Published • View PublicationBIB
Following a given ordering of the edges of a graph $G$, the greedy edge colouring procedure assigns to each edge the smallest available colour. The minimum number of colours thus involved is the chromatic index $χ'(G)$, and the maximum is the so-called Grundy chromatic index. Here, we are interested in the restricted case where the ordering of the edges builds the graph in a connected fashion. Let $χ_c'(G)$ be the minimum number of colours involved following such an ordering. We show that it is NP-hard to determine whether $χ_c'(G)>χ'(G)$. We prove that $χ'(G)=χ_c'(G)$ if $G$ is bipartite, and that $χ_c'(G)\leq 4$ if $G$ is subcubic.

Limiting crossing numbers for geodesic drawings on the sphere
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a model for random geodesic drawings of the complete bipartite graph $K_{n,n}$ on the unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^2$ in $\mathbb{R}^3$, where we select the vertices in each bipartite class of $K_{n,n}$ with respect to two non-degenerate probability measures on $\mathbb{S}^2$. It has been proved recently that many such measures give drawings whose crossing number approximates the Zarankiewicz number (the conjectured crossing number of $K_{n,n}$). In this paper we consider the intersection graphs associated with such random drawings. We prove that for any probability measures, the resulting random intersection graphs form a convergent graph sequence in the sense of graph limits. The edge density of the limiting graphon turns out to be independent of the two measures as long as they are antipodally symmetric. However, it is shown that the triangle densities behave differently. We examine a specific random model, blow-ups of antipodal drawings $D$ of $K_{4,4}$, and show that the triangle density in the corresponding crossing graphon depends on the angles between the great circles containing the edges in $D$ and can attain any value in the interval $\bigl(\frac{83}{12288}, \frac{128}{12288}\bigr)$.

Bootstrap percolation in Ore-type graphs
The $r$-neighbour bootstrap process describes an infection process on a graph, where we start with a set of initially infected vertices and an uninfected vertex becomes infected as soon as it has $r$ infected neighbours. An inital set of infected vertices is called percolating if at the end of the bootstrap process all vertices are infected. We give Ore-type conditions that guarantee the existence of a small percolating set of size $l\leq 2r-2$ if the number of vertices $n$ of our graph is sufficiently large: if $l\geq r$ and satisfies $2r \geq l+2 \lfloor \sqrt{2(l-r)+0.25}+2.5 \rfloor-1$ then there exists a percolating set of size $l$ for every graph in which any two non-adjacent vertices $x$ and $y$ satisfy $deg(x)+deg(y) \geq n+4r-2l-2\lfloor\sqrt{2(l-r)+0.25}+2.5 \rfloor-1$ and if $l$ is larger with $l\leq 2r-2$ there exists a percolating set of size $l$ if $deg(x)+deg(y) \geq n+2r-l-2$. Our results extend the work of Gunderson, who showed that a graph with minimum degree $\lfloor n/2 \rfloor+r-3$ has a percolating set of size $r \geq 4$. We also give bounds for arbitrarily large $l$ in the minimum degree setting.
