Tree-independence number of $P_5$-free graphs with no large bicliques
The tree-independence number of a graph is the minimum, over all tree-decompositions of the graph, of the maximum size of an independent set contained in a bag. Graph classes of bounded tree-independence number have strong structural and algorithmic properties, but the parameter can be unbounded even in quite restricted classes. In particular, the presence of an induced biclique $K_{\ell,\ell}$ forces tree-independence number at least $\ell$. This leads to the question whether large induced bicliques are the only obstruction to bounded tree-independence number in natural hereditary classes. A conjecture of Dallard, Krnc, Kwon, Milanič, Munaro, Štorgel, and Wiederrecht states that for all positive integers $t$ and $\ell$, every $\{P_t,K_{\ell,\ell}\}$-free graph has bounded tree-independence number. We prove this conjecture for $t=5$ by showing that every $\{P_5,K_{\ell,\ell}\}$-free graph has tree-independence number at most $4\ell$. We also obtain related bounds for the weaker parameter of $α$-degeneracy.
Density of Traceable Graphs
We establish tight lower and upper bounds on the number of edges in traceable graphs in several classes of dense graphs. A graph is traceable if it has a Hamiltonian path. We show that the bound is: - quadratic for the class of graphs of bounded neighborhood diversity, bounded size of maximum induced matching or bounded cluster vertex deletion number; - n log n for the class of cographs or, more generaly, bounded modular-width, and for the class of bounded distance to cograph; and - sligthly superlinear for the class of bounded shrub-depth.
Treewidth is NP-Complete on Cubic Graphs (and related results)
In this paper, we give a very simple proof that Treewidth is NP-complete; this proof also shows NP-completeness on the class of co-bipartite graphs. We then improve the result by Bodlaender and Thilikos from 1997 that Treewidth is NP-complete on graphs with maximum degree at most 9, by showing that Treewidth is NP-complete on cubic graphs.
On Polynomial Kernels for Traveling Salesperson Problem and its Generalizations
For many problems, the important instances from practice possess certain structure that one should reflect in the design of specific algorithms. As data reduction is an important and inextricable part of today's computation, we employ one of the most successful models of such precomputation -- the kernelization. Within this framework, we focus on Traveling Salesperson Problem (TSP) and some of its generalizations.
We provide a kernel for TSP with size polynomial in either the feedback edge set number or the size of a modulator to constant-sized components. For its generalizations, we also consider other structural parameters such as the vertex cover number and the size of a modulator to constant-sized paths. We complement our results from the negative side by showing that the existence of a polynomial-sized kernel with respect to the fractioning number, the combined parameter maximum degree and treewidth, and, in the case of Subset-TSP, modulator to disjoint cycles (i.e., the treewidth two graphs) is unlikely.

We study the problem of non-preemptively scheduling $n$ jobs, each job $j$ with a release time $t_j$, a deadline $d_j$, and a processing time $p_j$, on $m$ parallel identical machines. Cieliebak et al. (2004) considered the two constraints $|d_j-t_j|\leq λp_j$ and $|d_j-t_j|\leq p_j +σ$ and showed the problem to be NP-hard for any $λ>1$ and for any $σ\geq 2$. We complement their results by parameterized complexity studies: we show that, for any $λ>1$, the problem remains weakly NP-hard even for $m=2$ and strongly W[1]-hard parameterized by $m$. We present a pseudo-polynomial-time algorithm for constant $m$ and $λ$ and a fixed-parameter tractability result for the parameter $m$ combined with $σ$.

A balanced partition is a clustering of a graph into a given number of equal-sized parts. For instance, the Bisection problem asks to remove at most k edges in order to partition the vertices into two equal-sized parts. We prove that Bisection is FPT for the distance to constant cliquewidth if we are given the deletion set. This implies FPT algorithms for some well-studied parameters such as cluster vertex deletion number and feedback vertex set. However, we show that Bisection does not admit polynomial-size kernels for these parameters.
For the Vertex Bisection problem, vertices need to be removed in order to obtain two equal-sized parts. We show that this problem is FPT for the number of removed vertices k if the solution cuts the graph into a constant number c of connected components. The latter condition is unavoidable, since we also prove that Vertex Bisection is W[1]-hard w.r.t. (k,c).
Our algorithms for finding bisections can easily be adapted to finding partitions into d equal-sized parts, which entails additional running time factors of n^{O(d)}. We show that a substantial speed-up is unlikely since the corresponding task is W[1]-hard w.r.t. d, even on forests of maximum degree two. We can, however, show that it is FPT for the vertex cover number.
On Structural Parameterizations for the 2-Club Problem

The NP-hard 2-Club problem is, given an undirected graph G=(V,E) and l\in N, to decide whether there is a vertex set S\subseteq V of size at least l such that the induced subgraph G[S] has diameter at most two. We make progress towards a systematic classification of the complexity of 2-Club with respect to a hierarchy of prominent structural graph parameters. First, we present the following tight NP-hardness results: 2-Club is NP-hard on graphs that become bipartite by deleting one vertex, on graphs that can be covered by three cliques, and on graphs with domination number two and diameter three. Then, we consider the parameter h-index of the input graph. This parameter is motivated by real-world instances and the fact that 2-Club is fixed-parameter tractable with respect to the larger parameter maximum degree. We present an algorithm that solves 2-Club in |V|^{f(k)} time with k being the h-index. By showing W[1]-hardness for this parameter, we provide evidence that the above algorithm cannot be improved to a fixed-parameter algorithm. Furthermore, the reduction used for this hardness result can be modified to show that 2-Club is NP-hard if the input graph has constant degeneracy. Finally, we show that 2-Club is fixed-parameter tractable with respect to distance to cographs.
Beyond Max-Cut: λ-Extendible Properties Parameterized Above the Poljak-Turzík Bound

Poljak and Turzík (Discrete Math. 1986) introduced the notion of λ-extendible properties of graphs as a generalization of the property of being bipartite. They showed that for any 0<λ<1 and λ-extendible property Π, any connected graph G on n vertices and m edges contains a subgraph H \in Π with at least λm+ (1-λ)/2 (n-1) edges. The property of being bipartite is 1/2-extendible, and thus this bound generalizes the Edwards-Erdős bound for Max-Cut.
We define a variant, namely strong λ-extendibility, to which the bound applies. For a strongly λ-extendible graph property Π, we define the parameterized Above Poljak- Turzík (APT) (Π) problem as follows: Given a connected graph G on n vertices and m edges and an integer parameter k, does there exist a spanning subgraph H of G such that H \in Π and H has at least λm + (1-λ)/2 (n - 1) + k edges? The parameter is k, the surplus over the number of edges guaranteed by the Poljak-Turzík bound.
We consider properties Π for which APT (Π) is fixed- parameter tractable (FPT) on graphs which are O(k) vertices away from being a graph in which each block is a clique. We show that for all such properties, APT (Π) is FPT for all 0<λ<1. Our results hold for properties of oriented graphs and graphs with edge labels. Our results generalize the result of Crowston et al. (ICALP 2012) on Max-Cut parameterized above the Edwards-Erdős bound, and yield FPT algorithms for several graph problems parameterized above lower bounds, e.g., Max q-Colorable Subgraph problem. Our results also imply that the parameterized above-guarantee Oriented Max Acyclic Digraph problem is FPT, thus solving an open question of Raman and Saurabh (Theor. Comput. Sci. 2006).
