Spanning trees in random series-parallel graphs
By means of analytic techniques we show that the expected number of spanning trees in a connected labelled series-parallel graph on $n$ vertices chosen uniformly at random satisfies an estimate of the form $s \varrho^{-n} (1+o(1))$, where $s$ and $\varrho$ are computable constants, the values of which are approximately $s \approx 0.09063$ and $\varrho^{-1} \approx 2.08415$. We obtain analogue results for subfamilies of series-parallel graphs including 2-connected series-parallel graphs, 2-trees, and series-parallel graphs with fixed excess.

Many 2-level polytopes from matroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
The family of 2-level matroids, that is, matroids whose base polytope is 2-level, has been recently studied and characterized by means of combinatorial properties. 2-level matroids generalize series-parallel graphs, which have been already successfully analyzed from the enumerative perspective. We bring to light some structural properties of 2-level matroids and exploit them for enumerative purposes. Moreover, the counting results are used to show that the number of combinatorially non-equivalent (n-1)-dimensional 2-level polytopes is bounded from below by $c \cdot n^{-5/2} \cdot ρ^{-n}$, where $c\approx 0.03791727 $ and $ρ^{-1} \approx 4.88052854$.

On the limiting distribution of the metric dimension for random forests
Published • View PublicationBIB
The metric dimension of a graph G is the minimum size of a subset S of vertices of G such that all other vertices are uniquely determined by their distances to the vertices in S. In this paper we investigate the metric dimension for two different models of random forests, in each case obtaining normal limit distributions for this parameter.

Analytic combinatorics of chord and hyperchord diagrams with $k$ crossings
Published in Adv. in Appl. Math., 57:60-100, 2014 • View PublicationBIB
Using methods from Analytic Combinatorics, we study the families of perfect matchings, partitions, chord diagrams, and hyperchord diagrams on a disk with a prescribed number of crossings. For each family, we express the generating function of the configurations with exactly $k$ crossings as a rational function of the generating function of crossing-free configurations. Using these expressions, we study the singular behavior of these generating functions and derive asymptotic results on the counting sequences of the configurations with precisely $k$ crossings. Limiting distributions and random generators are also studied.
Threshold functions and Poisson convergence for systems of equations in random sets
Published in Mathematische Zeitschrift, February 2018, Volume 288, Issue 1-2, pp. 333-360 • View PublicationBIB
We present a unified framework to study threshold functions for the existence of solutions to linear systems of equations in random sets which includes arithmetic progressions, sum-free sets, $B_{h}[g]$-sets and Hilbert cubes. In particular, we show that there exists a threshold function for the property "$\mathcal{A}$ contains a non-trivial solution of $M\cdot\textbf{x}=\textbf{0}$", where $\mathcal{A}$ is a random set and each of its elements is chosen independently with the same probability from the interval of integers $\{1,\dots,n\}$. Our study contains a formal definition of trivial solutions for any combinatorial structure, extending a previous definition by Ruzsa when dealing with a single equation. Furthermore, we study the behaviour of the distribution of the number of non-trivial solutions at the threshold scale. We show that it converges to a Poisson distribution whose parameter depends on the volumes of certain convex polytopes arising from the linear system under study as well as the symmetry inherent in the structures, which we formally define and characterize.

On the probability of planarity of a random graph near the critical point
Published • View PublicationBIB
Consider the uniform random graph $G(n,M)$ with $n$ vertices and $M$ edges. Erdős and Rényi (1960) conjectured that the limit $$ \lim_{n \to \infty} \Pr\{G(n,\textstyle{n\over 2}) is planar}} $$ exists and is a constant strictly between 0 and 1. Łuczak, Pittel and Wierman (1994) proved this conjecture and Janson, Łuczak, Knuth and Pittel (1993) gave lower and upper bounds for this probability. In this paper we determine the exact probability of a random graph being planar near the critical point $M=n/2$. For each $λ$, we find an exact analytic expression for $$ p(λ) = \lim_{n \to \infty} \Pr{G(n,\textstyle{n\over 2}(1+λn^{-1/3})) is planar}.$$ In particular, we obtain $p(0) \approx 0.99780$. We extend these results to classes of graphs closed under taking minors. As an example, we show that the probability of $G(n,\textstyle{n\over 2})$ being series-parallel converges to 0.98003. For the sake of completeness and exposition we reprove in a concise way several basic properties we need of a random graph near the critical point.

On polynomial representation functions for multilinear forms
Given an infinite sequence of positive integers $\cA$, we prove that for every nonnegative integer $k$ the number of solutions of the equation $n=a_1+...+a_k$, $a_1,\,..., a_k\in \cA$, is not constant for $n$ large enough. This result is a corollary of our main theorem, which partially answers a question of Sárközy and Sós on representation functions for multilinear forms. Additionally, we obtain an Erdős-Fuchs type result for a wide variety of representation functions.

Asymptotic Enumeration of Non-crossing Partitions on Surfaces
We generalize the notion of non-crossing partition on a disk to general surfaces with boundary. For this, we consider a surface $Σ$ and introduce the number $C_Σ(n)$ of non-crossing partitions of a set of $n$ points laying on the boundary of $Σ$. Our proofs use bijective techniques arising from map enumeration, joint with the symbolic method and singularity analysis on generating functions. An outcome of our results is that the exponential growth of $C_Σ(n)$ is the same as the one of the $n$-th Catalan number, i.e., does not change when we move from the case where $Σ$ is a disk to general surfaces with boundary.

Dynamic Programming for Graphs on Surfaces
We provide a framework for the design and analysis of dynamic programming algorithms for surface-embedded graphs on n vertices and branchwidth at most k. Our technique applies to general families of problems where standard dynamic programming runs in 2^{O(k log k)} n steps. Our approach combines tools from topological graph theory and analytic combinatorics. In particular, we introduce a new type of branch decomposition called "surface cut decomposition", generalizing sphere cut decompositions of planar graphs introduced by Seymour and Thomas, which has nice combinatorial properties. Namely, the number of partial solutions that can be arranged on a surface cut decomposition can be upper-bounded by the number of non-crossing partitions on surfaces with boundary. It follows that partial solutions can be represented by a single-exponential (in the branchwidth k) number of configurations. This proves that, when applied on surface cut decompositions, dynamic programming runs in 2^{O(k)} n steps. That way, we considerably extend the class of problems that can be solved in running times with a single-exponential dependence on branchwidth and unify/improve most previous results in this direction.
Asymptotic study of subcritical graph classes
Published in SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics, 25 (4) (2011), 1615-1651 • View PublicationBIB
We present a unified general method for the asymptotic study of graphs from the so-called "subcritical"$ $ graph classes, which include the classes of cacti graphs, outerplanar graphs, and series-parallel graphs. This general method works both in the labelled and unlabelled framework. The main results concern the asymptotic enumeration and the limit laws of properties of random graphs chosen from subcritical classes. We show that the number $g_n/n!$ (resp. $g_n$) of labelled (resp. unlabelled) graphs on $n$ vertices from a subcritical graph class ${G}=\cup_n {G_n}$ satisfies asymptotically the universal behaviour $$ g_n = c n^{-5/2} γ^n (1+o(1)) $$ for computable constants $c,γ$, e.g. $γ\approx 9.38527$ for unlabelled series-parallel graphs, and that the number of vertices of degree $k$ ($k$ fixed) in a graph chosen uniformly at random from $G_n$, converges (after rescaling) to a normal law as $n\to\infty$.

Graph classes with given 3-connected components: asymptotic enumeration and random graphs
Consider a family $\mathcal{T}$ of 3-connected graphs of moderate growth, and let $\mathcal{G}$ be the class of graphs whose 3-connected components are graphs in $\mathcal{T}$. We present a general framework for analyzing such graphs classes based on singularity analysis of generating functions, which generalizes previously studied cases such as planar graphs and series-parallel graphs. We provide a general result for the asymptotic number of graphs in $\mathcal{G}$, based on the singularities of the exponential generating function associated to $\mathcal{T}$. We derive limit laws, which are either normal or Poisson, for several basic parameters, including the number of edges, number of blocks and number of components. For the size of the largest block we find a fundamental dichotomy: classes similar to planar graphs have almost surely a unique block of linear size, while classes similar to series-parallel graphs have only sublinear blocks. This dichotomy also applies to the size of the largest 3-connected component. For some classes under study both regimes occur, because of a critical phenomenon as the edge density in the class varies.

Enumerating simplicial decompositions of surfaces with boundaries
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics 33 (2012) pp. 302-325 • View PublicationBIB
It is well-known that the triangulations of the disc with $n+2$ vertices on its boundary are counted by the $n$th Catalan number $C(n)=\frac{1}{n+1}{2n \choose n}$. This paper deals with the generalisation of this problem to any arbitrary compact surface $S$ with boundaries. We obtain the asymptotic number of simplicial decompositions of the surface $S$ with $n$ vertices on its boundary. More generally, we determine the asymptotic number of dissections of $S$ when the faces are $δ$-gons with $δ$ belonging to a set of admissible degrees $Δ\subseteq \{3,4,5,...\}$. We also give the limit laws of certain parameters of such dissections.
