The Hom-Ext quiver and applications to exceptional collections
We study what we call the Hom-Ext quiver and characterize it as a type of 'superquiver'. In type $\widetilde{\mathbb{A}}$, the Hom-Ext quiver of an exceptional set is the tiling algebra of the corresponding geometric model. And, in that case, Hom-Ext quivers classify exceptional sets up to Dehn twist of the corresponding geometric model. We show that these Dehn twists are realized by twist functors and give autoequivalences of the derived category. We provide a generating set for the group of autoequivalences of the derived category in type $\widetilde{\mathbb{A}}$, and show that the Hom-Ext quiver classifies exceptional sets up to derived autoequivalence. We introduce superquivers, which are a generalization of Hom-Ext quivers. Exceptional sets over finite acyclic quivers are realized as representations of superquivers. Throughout, we list several questions and conjectures that make for, what we believe, exciting new research.

Short history of signed exceptional sequences
Whereas exceptional sequences have a long history with many well-known connections to combinatorics, signed exceptional sequences are relatively recent. The authors introduced this concept in 2017 [19], although it was retroactively realized that the category of noncrossing partitions [24] is a special case of this construction. Buan and Marsh [4] have introduced the concept of $τ$-exceptional sequences to generalize the definitions and theorems to all finite dimensional algebras. This short paper is the story of the original concept of signed exceptional sequences for hereditary algebras and how it developed out of the two authors' study of algebraic K-theory, link invariants, and cluster combinatorics.

Enumerating m-clusters using exceptional sequences
We give a bijection between ordered $m$-clusters and (complete) $m$-exceptional sequences, a concept that we introduce for this purpose. This holds for all hereditary artin algebras. This extends the bijection in the $m = 1$ case shown in arXiv:1706.02041.

Bijection between positive clusters and projectively signed exceptional sequences
Published in Communications in Algebra (2024) • View PublicationBIB
In 2017, Igusa and Todorov gave a bijection between signed exceptional sequences and ordered partial clusters. In this paper, we show that every term in an exceptional sequence is either relatively projective or relatively injective or both and we refine this bijection to one between projectively signed exceptional sequences and ordered partial positive clusters. We also give a characterization of relatively projective/injective objects in terms of supports of the objects in the exceptional sequence.

Generalized Goulden-Yong duals and signed minimal factorizations
We show the equivalence between one-way reflections and relative projective representations. We construct generalized Goulden-Yong duals using reverse Garside element actions and folded chord diagrams. We give two applications of the generalized Goulden-Yong duals: constructing generalized Prüfer codes and counting signed factorizations using the matrix-tree theorem.

Exceptional sequences of type $B_n/C_n$ and those in the abelian tube
We examine clusters in the cluster tube of rank $n+1$ using exceptional sequences in the abelian tube of rank $n+1$. Although the abelian tube has more exceptional sequences than the module categories of type $B_{n}/C_{n}$, we obtain a bijection between the set of signed exceptional sequences of any length in these categories. This bijection gives a reinterpretation of the formula of Buan-Marsh-Vatne comparing clusters of type $B_n/C_n$ with maximal rigid objects in the cluster tube of rank $n+1$. The bijection passes through the set of "augmented" rooted labeled trees.

On Clusters and Exceptional Sets in Types $\mathbb{A}$ and $\tilde{\mathbb{A}}$
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we first study clusters in type $\tilde{\mathbb{A}}$ by collecting them into a finite number of infinite families given by Dehn twists of their corresponding triangulations, and show that these families are counted by the Catalan numbers. We also highlight the similarities and differences between the annuli diagrams used to study clusters and those used to study exceptional sets in type $\tilde{\mathbb{A}}$. We then focus on exceptional collections (sets) of modules over path algebras of quivers by first showing that the notion of relative projectivity in exceptional sets is well defined. We finish by counting the number of exceptional sets of representations of type $\mathbb{A}$ quivers with straight orientation and using this to count the number of families of exceptional sets of type $\tilde{\mathbb{A}}$ with straight orientation.
Binary trees using the bookshelf and baseball constructions
This is a largely expository paper in which we discuss various sets having a Catalan number of objects and some well-known bijections between these sets presented in a new and hopefully interesting way. We call these concepts "bookshelf" and "baseball" constructions. No knowledge of these topics is assumed. These are the final student papers for a course at Brandeis University.

Probability distribution for exceptional sequences of type $A_n$
We determine the probability distribution for relative projective objects in an exceptional sequence of type $A_n$ of any length. We show that these events (the $j$-th object in an exceptional sequence of length $k\le n$ being relatively projective) are independent of each other and from the length of the sequence. This gives a probabilistic interpretation of the product formula for the number of exceptional sequences of length $k$ and clusters or partial clusters of size $k$ since the latter numbers are proportional to the number of signed exceptional sequences of length $k$.

Exceptional sequences and rooted labeled forests
Published in Journal of Algebra and Its Applications, March 2024 • View PublicationBIB
We give a representation-theoretic bijection between rooted labeled forests with $n$ vertices and complete exceptional sequences for the quiver of type $A_n$ with straight orientation. The ascending and descending vertices in the forest correspond to relatively injective and relatively projective objects in the exceptional sequence. We conclude that every object in an exceptional sequence for linearly oriented $A_n$ is either relatively projective or relatively injective or both. We construct a natural action of the extended braid group on rooted labeled forests and show that it agrees with the known action of the braid group on complete exceptional sequences. We also describe the action of $Δ$, the Garside element of the braid group, on rooted labeled forests using representation theory and show how this relates to cluster theory.
Infinitesimal semi-invariant pictures and co-amalgamation
Published in Journal of the London Mathematical Society 109 (2023), no. 1 • View PublicationBIB
The purpose of this paper is to study the local structure of the semi-invariant picture of a tame hereditary algebra near the null root. Using a construction that we call co-amalgamation, we show that this local structure is completely described by the semi-invariant pictures of a collection of self-injective Nakayama algebras. We then describe the cones of this local structure using cluster-like structures that we call support regular clusters. Finally, we show that the local structure is (piecewise linearly) invariant under cluster tilting.

Universal quivers
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that for any positive integer $n$, there exists a quiver $Q$ with $O(n^2)$ vertices and $O(n^2)$ edges such that any quiver on $n$ vertices is a full subquiver of a quiver mutation equivalent to $Q$. We generalize this statement to skew-symmetrizable matrices and obtain other related results. In particular, we show that any quiver is a full subquiver of a quiver mutation equivalent to a quiver of a plabic graph.
Combinatorics of exceptional sequences in type A
Published • View PublicationBIB
Exceptional sequences are certain ordered sequences of quiver representations. We introduce a class of objects called strand diagrams and use this model to classify exceptional sequences of representations of a quiver whose underlying graph is a type $A_n$ Dynkin diagram. We also use variations of this model to classify c-matrices of such quivers, to interpret exceptional sequences as linear extensions of posets, and to give a simple bijection between exceptional sequences and certain chains in the lattice of noncrossing partitions. This work extends a classification of exceptional sequences for the linearly-ordered quiver obtained in an earlier paper by the first and third authors.

Mixed cobinary trees
Published • View PublicationBIB
We develop basic cluster theory from an elementary point of view using a variation of binary trees which we call mixed cobinary trees. We show that the number of isomorphism classes of such trees is given by the Catalan number Cn where n is the number of internal nodes. We also consider the corresponding quiver Q_ε of type An-1. As a special case of more general known results about the relation between c-vectors, representations of quivers and their semi-invariants, we explain the bijection between mixed cobinary trees and the vertices of the generalized associahedron corresponding to the quiver Q_ε.

Families of regular matroids
This is an introductory paper about the category of regular oriented matroids (ROMs). We compare the homotopy types of the categories of regular and binary matroids. For example, in the unoriented case, they have the same fundamental group but we show that the higher homotopy groups are different for rank three regular and binary matroids. We also speculate on the possible impact of a recent theorem of Galatius [Gal] computing the stable cohomology of the category of graphs and on possible applications to higher Reidemeister torsion.

Increasing trees and Kontsevich cycles
Published in Geom. Topol. 8 (2004) 969-1012 • View PublicationBIB
It is known that the combinatorial classes in the cohomology of the mapping class group of punctures surfaces defined by Witten and Kontsevich are polynomials in the adjusted Miller-Morita-Mumford classes. The leading coefficient was computed in [Kiyoshi Igusa: Algebr. Geom. Topol. 4 (2004) 473-520]. The next coefficient was computed in [Kiyoshi Igusa: math.AT/0303157, to appear in Topology]. The present paper gives a recursive formula for all of the coefficients. The main combinatorial tool is a generating function for a new statistic on the set of increasing trees on 2n+1 vertices. As we already explained in the last paper cited this verifies all of the formulas conjectured by Arbarello and Cornalba [J. Alg. Geom. 5 (1996) 705--749]. Mondello [math.AT/0303207, to appear in IMRN] has obtained similar results using different methods.
