Two lower bounds for $p$-centered colorings
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, vol. 22 no. 4, Graph Theory (November 11, 2020) dmtcs:6543 • View PublicationBIB
Given a graph $G$ and an integer $p$, a coloring $f : V(G) \to \mathbb{N}$ is \emph{$p$-centered} if for every connected subgraph $H$ of $G$, either $f$ uses more than $p$ colors on $H$ or there is a color that appears exactly once in $H$. The notion of $p$-centered colorings plays a central role in the theory of sparse graphs. In this note we show two lower bounds on the number of colors required in a $p$-centered coloring. First, we consider monotone classes of graphs whose shallow minors have average degree bounded polynomially in the radius, or equivalently (by a result of Dvořák and Norin), admitting strongly sublinear separators. We construct such a class such that $p$-centered colorings require a number of colors super-polynomial in $p$. This is in contrast with a recent result of Pilipczuk and Siebertz, who established a polynomial upper bound in the special case of graphs excluding a fixed minor. Second, we consider graphs of maximum degree $Δ$. Dębski, Felsner, Micek, and Schröder recently proved that these graphs have $p$-centered colorings with $O(Δ^{2-1/p} p)$ colors. We show that there are graphs of maximum degree $Δ$ that require $Ω(Δ^{2-1/p} p \ln^{-1/p}Δ)$ colors in any $p$-centered coloring, thus matching their upper bound up to a logarithmic factor.
Efficient fully dynamic elimination forests with applications to detecting long paths and cycles
Published • View PublicationBIB
We present a data structure that in a dynamic graph of treedepth at most $d$, which is modified over time by edge insertions and deletions, maintains an optimum-height elimination forest. The data structure achieves worst-case update time $2^{{\cal O}(d^2)}$, which matches the best known parameter dependency in the running time of a static fpt algorithm for computing the treedepth of a graph. This improves a result of Dvořák et al. [ESA 2014], who for the same problem achieved update time $f(d)$ for some non-elementary (i.e. tower-exponential) function $f$. As a by-product, we improve known upper bounds on the sizes of minimal obstructions for having treedepth $d$ from doubly-exponential in $d$ to $d^{{\cal O}(d)}$. As applications, we design new fully dynamic parameterized data structures for detecting long paths and cycles in general graphs. More precisely, for a fixed parameter $k$ and a dynamic graph $G$, modified over time by edge insertions and deletions, our data structures maintain answers to the following queries: - Does $G$ contain a simple path on $k$ vertices? - Does $G$ contain a simple cycle on at least $k$ vertices? In the first case, the data structure achieves amortized update time $2^{{\cal O}(k^2)}$. In the second case, the amortized update time is $2^{{\cal O}(k^4)} + {\cal O}(k \log n)$. In both cases we assume access to a dictionary on the edges of $G$.
Covering minimal separators and potential maximal cliques in $P_t$-free graphs

A graph is called $P_t$-free} if it does not contain a $t$-vertex path as an induced subgraph. While $P_4$-free graphs are exactly cographs, the structure of $P_t$-free graphs for $t \geq 5$ remains little understood. On one hand, classic computational problems such as Maximum Weight Independent Set (MWIS) and $3$-Coloring are not known to be NP-hard on $P_t$-free graphs for any fixed $t$. On the other hand, despite significant effort, polynomial-time algorithms for MWIS in $P_6$-free graphs~[SODA 2019] and $3$-Coloring in $P_7$-free graphs~[Combinatorica 2018] have been found only recently. In both cases, the algorithms rely on deep structural insights into the considered graph classes. One of the main tools in the algorithms for MWIS in $P_5$-free graphs~[SODA 2014] and in $P_6$-free graphs~[SODA 2019] is the so-called Separator Covering Lemma that asserts that every minimal separator in the graph can be covered by the union of neighborhoods of a constant number of vertices. In this note we show that such a statement generalizes to $P_7$-free graphs and is false in $P_8$-free graphs. We also discuss analogues of such a statement for covering potential maximal cliques with unions of neighborhoods.
(Theta, triangle)-free and (even hole, $K_4$)-free graphs. Part 2 : bounds on treewidth

A {\em theta} is a graph made of three internally vertex-disjoint chordless paths $P_1 = a \dots b$, $P_2 = a \dots b$, $P_3 = a \dots b$ of length at least~2 and such that no edges exist between the paths except the three edges incident to $a$ and the three edges incident to $b$. A {\em pyramid} is a graph made of three chordless paths $P_1 = a \dots b_1$, $P_2 = a \dots b_2$, $P_3 = a \dots b_3$ of length at least~1, two of which have length at least 2, vertex-disjoint except at $a$, and such that $b_1b_2b_3$ is a triangle and no edges exist between the paths except those of the triangle and the three edges incident to~$a$. An \emph{even hole} is a chordless cycle of even length. For three non-negative integers $i\leq j\leq k$, let $S_{i,j,k}$ be the tree with a vertex $v$, from which start three paths with $i$, $j$, and $k$ edges respectively. We denote by $K_t$ the complete graph on $t$ vertices. We prove that for all non-negative integers $i, j, k$, the class of graphs that contain no theta, no $K_3$, and no $S_{i, j, k}$ as induced subgraphs have bounded treewidth. We prove that for all non-negative integers $i, j, k, t$, the class of graphs that contain no even hole, no pyramid, no $K_t$, and no $S_{i, j, k}$ as induced subgraphs have bounded treewidth. To bound the treewidth, we prove that every graph of large treewidth must contain a large clique or a minimal separator of large cardinality.
Jones' Conjecture in subcubic graphs

We confirm Jones' Conjecture for subcubic graphs. Namely, if a subcubic planar graph does not contain $k+1$ vertex-disjoint cycles, then it suffices to delete $2k$ vertices to obtain a forest.
Packing Directed Cycles Quarter- and Half-Integrally

The celebrated Erdős-Pósa theorem states that every undirected graph that does not admit a family of $k$ vertex-disjoint cycles contains a feedback vertex set (a set of vertices hitting all cycles in the graph) of size $O(k \log k)$. After being known for long as Younger's conjecture, a similar statement for directed graphs has been proven in 1996 by Reed, Robertson, Seymour, and Thomas. However, in their proof, the dependency of the size of the feedback vertex set on the size of vertex-disjoint cycle packing is not elementary. We show that if we compare the size of a minimum feedback vertex set in a directed graph with the quarter-integral cycle packing number, we obtain a polynomial bound. More precisely, we show that if in a directed graph $G$ there is no family of $k$ cycles such that every vertex of $G$ is in at most four of the cycles, then there exists a feedback vertex set in $G$ of size $O(k^4)$. Furthermore, a variant of our proof shows that if in a directed graph $G$ there is no family of $k$ cycles such that every vertex of $G$ is in at most two of the cycles, then there exists a feedback vertex set in $G$ of size $O(k^6)$. On the way there we prove a more general result about quarter-integral packing of subgraphs of high directed treewidth: for every pair of positive integers $a$ and $b$, if a directed graph $G$ has directed treewidth $Ω(a^6 b^8 \log^2(ab))$, then one can find in $G$ a family of $a$ subgraphs, each of directed treewidth at least $b$, such that every vertex of $G$ is in at most four subgraphs.
Improved bounds for the excluded-minor approximation of treedepth
Treedepth, a more restrictive graph width parameter than treewidth and pathwidth, plays a major role in the theory of sparse graph classes. We show that there exists a constant $C$ such that for every positive integers $a,b$ and a graph $G$, if the treedepth of $G$ is at least $Cab$, then the treewidth of $G$ is at least $a$ or $G$ contains a subcubic (i.e., of maximum degree at most $3$) tree of treedepth at least $b$ as a subgraph. As a direct corollary, we obtain that every graph of treedepth $Ω(k^3)$ is either of treewidth at least $k$, contains a subdivision of full binary tree of depth $k$, or contains a path of length $2^k$. This improves the bound of $Ω(k^5 \log^2 k)$ of Kawarabayashi and Rossman [SODA 2018]. We also show an application of our techniques for approximation algorithms of treedepth: given a graph $G$ of treedepth $k$ and treewidth $t$, one can in polynomial time compute a treedepth decomposition of $G$ of width $\mathcal{O}(kt \log^{3/2} t)$. This improves upon a bound of $\mathcal{O}(kt^2 \log t)$ stemming from a tradeoff between known results. The main technical ingredient in our result is a proof that every tree of treedepth $d$ contains a subcubic subtree of treedepth at least $d \cdot \log_3 ((1+\sqrt{5})/2)$.
On the Maximum Weight Independent Set Problem in graphs without induced cycles of length at least five
A hole in a graph is an induced cycle of length at least $4$, and an antihole is the complement of an induced cycle of length at least $4$. A hole or antihole is long if its length is at least $5$. For an integer $k$, the $k$-prism is the graph consisting of two cliques of size $k$ joined by a matching. The complexity of Maximum (Weight) Independent Set (MWIS) in long-hole-free graphs remains an important open problem. In this paper we give a polynomial time algorithm to solve MWIS in long-hole-free graphs with no $k$-prism (for any fixed integer $k$), and a subexponential algorithm for MWIS in long-hole-free graphs in general. As a special case this gives a polynomial time algorithm to find a maximum weight clique in perfect graphs with no long antihole, and no hole of length $6$. The algorithms use the framework of minimal chordal completions and potential maximal cliques.
Caterpillars in Erdős-Hajnal
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $T$ be a tree such that all its vertices of degree more than two lie on one path, that is, $T$ is a caterpillar subdivision. We prove that there exists $ε>0$ such that for every graph $G$ with $|V(G)|\ge 2$ not containing $T$ as an induced subgraph, either some vertex has at least $ε|V(G)|$ neighbours, or there are two disjoint sets of vertices $A,B$, both of cardinality at least $ε|V(G)|$, where there is no edge joining $A$ and $B$. A consequence is: for every caterpillar subdivision $T$, there exists $c>0$ such that for every graph $G$ containing neither of $T$ and its complement as an induced subgraph, $G$ has a clique or stable set with at least $|V(G)|^c$ vertices. This extends a theorem of Bousquet, Lagoutte and Thomassé [JCTB 2015], who proved the same when $T$ is a path, and a recent theorem of Choromanski, Falik, Liebenau, Patel and Pilipczuk [Electron. J. Combin. 2018], who proved it when $T$ is a "hook".

The Erdős-Hajnal conjecture for caterpillars and their complements
The celebrated Erdős-Hajnal conjecture states that for every proper hereditary graph class $\mathcal{G}$ there exists a constant $\varepsilon = \varepsilon(\mathcal{G}) > 0$ such that every graph $G \in \mathcal{G}$ contains a clique or an independent set of size $|V(G)|^\varepsilon$. Recently, there has been a growing interest in the symmetrized variant of this conjecture, where one additionally requires $\mathcal{G}$ to be closed under complementation. We show that any hereditary graph class that is closed under complementation and excludes a fixed caterpillar as an induced subgraph satisfies the Erdős-Hajnal conjecture. Here, a caterpillar is a tree whose vertices of degree at least three lie on a single path (i.e., our caterpillars may have arbitrarily long legs). In fact, we prove a stronger property of such graph classes, called in the literature the strong Erdős-Hajnal property: for every such graph class $\mathcal{G}$, there exists a constant $δ= δ(\mathcal{G}) > 0$ such that every graph $G \in \mathcal{G}$ contains two disjoint sets $A,B \subseteq V(G)$ of size at least $δ|V(G)|$ each so that either all edges between $A$ and $B$ are present in $G$, or none of them. This result significantly extends the family of graph classes for which we know that the strong Erdős-Hajnal property holds; for graph classes excluding a graph $H$ and its complement it was previously known only for paths [Bousquet, Lagoutte, Thomassé, JCTB 2015] and hooks (i.e., paths with an additional pendant vertex at third vertex of the path) [Choromanski, Falik, Liebenau, Patel, Pilipczuk, arXiv:1508.00634].
Polynomial-time algorithm for Maximum Weight Independent Set on $P_6$-free graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
In the classic Maximum Weight Independent Set problem we are given a graph $G$ with a nonnegative weight function on vertices, and the goal is to find an independent set in $G$ of maximum possible weight. While the problem is NP-hard in general, we give a polynomial-time algorithm working on any $P_6$-free graph, that is, a graph that has no path on $6$ vertices as an induced subgraph. This improves the polynomial-time algorithm on $P_5$-free graphs of Lokshtanov et al. (SODA 2014), and the quasipolynomial-time algorithm on $P_6$-free graphs of Lokshtanov et al (SODA 2016). The main technical contribution leading to our main result is enumeration of a polynomial-size family $\mathcal{F}$ of vertex subsets with the following property: for every maximal independent set $I$ in the graph, $\mathcal{F}$ contains all maximal cliques of some minimal chordal completion of $G$ that does not add any edge incident to a vertex of $I$.
Excluding hooks and their complements

The celebrated Erdos-Hajnal conjecture states that for every $n$-vertex undirected graph $H$ there exists $\eps(H)>0$ such that every graph $G$ that does not contain $H$ as an induced subgraph contains a clique or an independent set of size at least $n^{\eps(H)}$. A weaker version of the conjecture states that the polynomial-size clique/independent set phenomenon occurs if one excludes both $H$ and its complement $H^{\compl}$. We show that the weaker conjecture holds if $H$ is any path with a pendant edge at its third vertex; thus we give a new infinite family of graphs for which the conjecture holds.
The planar directed k-Vertex-Disjoint Paths problem is fixed-parameter tractable
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a graph G and k pairs of vertices (s_1,t_1), ..., (s_k,t_k), the k-Vertex-Disjoint Paths problem asks for pairwise vertex-disjoint paths P_1, ..., P_k such that P_i goes from s_i to t_i. Schrijver [SICOMP'94] proved that the k-Vertex-Disjoint Paths problem on planar directed graphs can be solved in time n^{O(k)}. We give an algorithm with running time 2^{2^{O(k^2)}} n^{O(1)} for the problem, that is, we show the fixed-parameter tractability of the problem.
