Nordhaus-Gaddum upper bounds for graph connectivity parameters
We examine upper bounds on Nordhaus-Gaddum type problems for parameters related to graph connectivity. Our main result is that for a graph $G$ on $n$ vertices where both $G$ and its complement $G^c$ are connected, then the sum of the algebraic connectivity of $G$ and the algebraic connectivity of $G^c$ cannot exceed $n-3$ (with finitely many exceptions with a small number of vertices). We obtain similar results for the isoperimetric number of a graph, and explore similar Nordhaus-Gaddum type questions for the Cheeger constant and the second eigenvalue of the normalized Laplacian matrix.
On defining Kemeny's constant for non-backtracking random walks
We propose two possible definitions for a version of Kemeny's constant of a graph based on non-backtracking random walks (in place of the usual simple random walk). We show that these two definitions coincide for edge-transitive graphs, and give a condition generalizing edge-transitive for which equality holds, and investigate by how much they can differ in general. We compute our non-backtracking Kemeny's constant for several families of graphs.

Two Distinct Eigenvalues from a New Graph Product
The parameter $q(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the minimum number of distinct eigenvalues of a symmetric matrix whose pattern is given by $G$. We introduce a novel graph product by which we construct new infinite families of graphs that achieve $q(G)=2$. Several graph families for which it is already known that $q(G)=2$ can also be thought of as arising from this new product.
Node resistance curvature in Cartesian graph products
Devriendt and Lambiotte recently introduced the \emph{node resistance curvature}, a notion of graph curvature based on the effective resistance matrix. In this paper, we begin the study of the behavior of the node resistance curvature under the operation of the Cartesian graph product. We study the natural question of global positivity of node resistance curvature of the Cartesian product of positively-curved graphs, and prove that, whenever $m,n\ge3$, the node resistance curvature of the interior vertices of a $m\times n$ grid is always nonpositive, while it is always nonnegative on the boundary of such grids. For completeness, we also prove a number of results on node resistance curvature in $2\times n$ grids and exhibit a counterexample to a generalization. We also give generic bounds and suggest several further questions for future study.
A Ricci flow on graphs from effective resistance
In this paper, we introduce a new notion of curvature on the edges of a graph that is defined in terms of effective resistances. We call this the Ricci--Foster curvature. We study the Ricci flow resulting from this curvature. We prove the existence of solutions to Ricci flow on short time intervals, and prove that Ricci flow preserves graphs with nonnegative (resp. positive) curvature.

Pretty good fractional revival via magnetic fields: theory and examples
We develop the theory of pretty good quantum fractional revival in arbitrary sized subsets of a graph, including the theory for fractional cospectrality of subsets of arbitrary size. We use this theory to give conditions under which a magnetic field can induce pretty good fractional revival, and give several examples.
Bounds on Kemeny's constant of a graph and the Nordhaus-Gaddum problem
We study Nordhaus-Gaddum problems for Kemeny's constant $\mathcal{K}(G)$ of a connected graph $G$. We prove bounds on $\min\{\mathcal{K}(G),\mathcal{K}(\overline{G})\}$ and the product $\mathcal{K}(G)\mathcal{K}(\overline{G})$ for various families of graphs. In particular, we show that if the maximum degree of a graph $G$ on $n$ vertices is $n-O(1)$ or $n-Ω(n)$, then $\min\{\mathcal{K}(G),\mathcal{K}(\overline{G})\}$ is at most $O(n)$.
Kemeny's constant and enumerating Braess edges in trees
We study the problem of enumerating Braess edges for Kemeny's constant in trees. We obtain bounds and asympotic results for the number of Braess edges in some families of trees.

Zero Forcing on 2-connected Outerplanar Graphs
We determine upper and lower bounds on the zero forcing number of 2-connected outerplanar graphs in terms of the structure of the weak dual. We show that the upper bound is always at most half the number of vertices of the graph. This work generalizes work of Hernández, Ranilla and Ranilla-Cortina who proved a similar result for maximal outerplanar graphs.

A Nordhaus-Gaddum type problem for the normalized Laplacian spectrum and graph Cheeger constant
For a graph $G$ on $n$ vertices with normalized Laplacian eigenvalues $0 = λ_1(G) \leq λ_2(G) \leq \cdots \leq λ_n(G)$ and graph complement $G^c$, we prove that \begin{equation*} \max\{λ_2(G),λ_2(G^c)\}\geq \frac{2}{n^2}. \end{equation*} We do this by way of lower bounding $\max\{i(G), i(G^c)\}$ and $\max\{h(G), h(G^c)\}$ where $i(G)$ and $h(G)$ denote the isoperimetric number and Cheeger constant of $G$, respectively.
Bordering of Symmetric Matrices and an Application to the Minimum Number of Distinct Eigenvalues for the Join of Graphs
An important facet of the inverse eigenvalue problem for graphs is to determine the minimum number of distinct eigenvalues of a particular graph. We resolve this question for the join of a connected graph with a path. We then focus on bordering a matrix and attempt to control the change in the number of distinct eigenvalues induced by this operation. By applying bordering techniques to the join of graphs, we obtain numerous results on the nature of the minimum number of distinct eigenvalues as vertices are joined to a fixed graph.

Isospectral reductions and quantum walks on graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give a new formula for computing the isospectral reduction of a matrix (and graph) down to a submatrix (or subgraph). Using this, we generalize the notion of isospectral reductions. In addition, we give a procedure for constructing a matrix whose isospectral reduction down to a submatrix is given. We also prove that the isospectral reduction completely determines the restriction of the quantum walk transition matrix to a subset. Using these, we construct new families of simple graphs exhibiting perfect quantum state transfer.
Unicyclic graphs and the inertia of the distance squared matrix
Published • View PublicationBIB
A result of Bapat and Sivasubramanian gives the inertia of the distance squared matrix of a tree. We develop general tools on how pendant vertices and degree 2 vertices affect the inertia of the distance squared matrix and use these to give an alternative proof of this result. We further use these tools to extend this result to certain families of unicyclic graphs, and we explore how far these results can be extended.

Effects of Backtracking on PageRank
In this paper, we consider three variations on standard PageRank: Non-backtracking PageRank, $μ$-PageRank, and $\infty$-PageRank, all of which alter the standard formula by adjusting the likelihood of backtracking in the algorithm's random walk. We show that in the case of regular and bipartite biregular graphs, standard PageRank and its variants are equivalent. We also compare each centrality measure and investigate their clustering capabilities.
On the Laplacian spread of digraphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this article, we extend the notion of the Laplacian spread to simple directed graphs (digraphs) using the restricted numerical range. First, we provide Laplacian spread values for several families of digraphs. Then, we prove sharp upper bounds on the Laplacian spread for all polygonal and balanced digraphs. In particular, we show that the validity of the Laplacian spread bound for balanced digraphs is equivalent to the Laplacian spread conjecture for simple undirected graphs, which was conjectured in 2011 and proven in 2021. Moreover, we prove an equivalent statement for weighted balanced digraphs with weights between $0$ and $1$. Finally, we state several open conjectures that are motivated by empirical data.
Kemeny's constant for non-backtracking random walks
Published • View PublicationBIB
Kemeny's constant for a connected graph $G$ is the expected time for a random walk to reach a randomly-chosen vertex $u$, regardless of the choice of the initial vertex. We extend the definition of Kemeny's constant to non-backtracking random walks and compare it to Kemeny's constant for simple random walks. We explore the relationship between these two parameters for several families of graphs and provide closed-form expressions for regular and biregular graphs. In nearly all cases, the non-backtracking variant yields the smaller Kemeny's constant.
New conjectures on algebraic connectivity and the Laplacian spread of graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We conjecture a new lower bound on the algebraic connectivity of a graph that involves the number of vertices of high eccentricity in a graph. We prove that this lower bound implies a strengthening of the Laplacian Spread Conjecture. We discuss further conjectures, also strengthening the Laplacian Spread Conjecture, that include a conjecture for simple graphs and a conjecture for weighted graphs.

A 1-Separation Formula for the Graph Kemeny Constant and Braess Edges
Published • View PublicationBIB
Kemeny's constant of a simple connected graph $G$ is the expected length of a random walk from $i$ to any given vertex $j \neq i$. We provide a simple method for computing Kemeny's constant for 1-separable via effective resistance methods from electrical network theory. Using this formula, we furnish a simple proof that the path graph on $n$ vertices maximizes Kemeny's constant for the class of undirected trees on $n$ vertices. Applying this method again, we simplify existing expressions for the Kemeny's constant of barbell graphs and demonstrate which barbell maximizes Kemeny's constant. This 1-separation identity further allows us to create sufficient conditions for the existence of Braess edges in 1-separable graphs. We generalize the notion of the Braess edge to Braess sets, collections of non-edges in a graph such that their addition to the base graph increases the Kemeny constant. We characterize Braess sets in graphs with any number of twin pendant vertices, generalizing work of Kirkland et.~al.~\cite{kirkland2016kemeny} and Ciardo \cite{ciardo2020braess}.

Spectral properties of the non-backtracking matrix of a graph
Published • View PublicationBIB
We investigate the spectrum of the non-backtracking matrix of a graph. In particular, we show how to obtain eigenvectors of the non-backtracking matrix in terms of eigenvectors of a smaller matrix. Furthermore, we find an expression for the eigenvalues of the non-backtracking matrix in terms of eigenvalues of the adjacency matrix and use this to upper-bound the spectral radius of the non-backtracking matrix and to give a lower bound on the spectrum. We also investigate properties of a graph that can be determined by the spectrum. Specifically, we prove that the number of components, the number of degree 1 vertices, and whether or not the graph is bipartite are all determined by the spectrum of the non-backtracking matrix.

Resistance distance, Kirchhoff index, and Kemeny's constant in flower graphs
We obtain a general formula for the resistance distance (or effective resistance) between any pair of nodes in a general family of graphs which we call flower graphs. Flower graphs are obtained from identifying nodes of multiple copies of a given base graph in a cyclic way. We apply our general formula to two specific families of flower graphs, where the base graph is either a complete graph or a cycle. We also obtain bounds on the Kirchhoff index and Kemeny's constant of general flower graphs using our formula for resistance. For flower graphs whose base graph is a complete graph or a cycle, we obtain exact, closed form expressions for the Kirchhoff index and Kemeny's constant.
