Partitioning a 2-edge-coloured graph of minimum degree $2n/3 + o(n)$ into three monochromatic cycles
Published • View PublicationBIB
Lehel conjectured in the 1970s that every red and blue edge-coloured complete graph can be partitioned into two monochromatic cycles. This was confirmed in 2010 by Bessy and Thomassé. However, the host graph $G$ does not have to be complete. It it suffices to require that $G$ has minimum degree at least $3n/4$, where $n$ is the order of $G$, as was shown recently by Letzter, confirming a conjecture of Balogh, Barát, Gerbner, Gyárfás and Sárközy. This degree condition is asymptotically tight. Here we continue this line of research, by proving that for every red and blue edge-colouring of an $n$-vertex graph of minimum degree at least $2n/3 + o(n)$, there is a partition of the vertex set into three monochromatic cycles. This approximately verifies a conjecture of Pokrovskiy and is essentially tight.
Active clustering for labeling training data
Published in NeurIPS 2021 • Search Publication
Gathering training data is a key step of any supervised learning task, and it is both critical and expensive. Critical, because the quantity and quality of the training data has a high impact on the performance of the learned function. Expensive, because most practical cases rely on humans-in-the-loop to label the data. The process of determining the correct labels is much more expensive than comparing two items to see whether they belong to the same class. Thus motivated, we propose a setting for training data gathering where the human experts perform the comparatively cheap task of answering pairwise queries, and the computer groups the items into classes (which can be labeled cheaply at the very end of the process). Given the items, we consider two random models for the classes: one where the set partition they form is drawn uniformly, the other one where each item chooses its class independently following a fixed distribution. In the first model, we characterize the algorithms that minimize the average number of queries required to cluster the items and analyze their complexity. In the second model, we analyze a specific algorithm family, propose as a conjecture that they reach the minimum average number of queries and compare their performance to a random approach. We also propose solutions to handle errors or inconsistencies in the experts' answers.
Towards a hypergraph version of the Pósa-Seymour conjecture
Published in Advances in Combinatorics 2023:3, 29pp • View PublicationBIB
We prove that for fixed $r\ge k\ge 2$, every $k$-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices having minimum codegree at least $(1-(\binom{r-1}{k-1}+\binom{r-2}{k-2})^{-1})n+o(n)$ contains the $(r-k+1)$th power of a tight Hamilton cycle. This result may be seen as a step towards a hypergraph version of the Pósa-Seymour conjecture. Moreover, we prove that the same bound on the codegree suffices for finding a copy of every spanning hypergraph of tree-width less than $r$ which admits a tree decomposition where every vertex is in a bounded number of bags.
Dirac-type conditions for spanning bounded-degree hypertrees
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove that for fixed $k$, every $k$-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices and of minimum codegree at least $n/2+o(n)$ contains every spanning tight $k$-tree of bounded vertex degree as a sub\-graph. This generalises a well-known result of Komlós, Sárközy and Szemerédi for graphs. Our result is asymptotically sharp. We also prove an extension of our result to hypergraphs that satisfy some weak quasirandomness conditions.

$3$-Colouring $P_t$-free graphs without short odd cycles
For any odd $t\ge 9$, we present a polynomial-time algorithm that solves the $3$-colouring problem, and finds a $3$-colouring if one exists, in $P_{t}$-free graphs of odd girth at least $t-2$. In particular, our algorithm works for $(P_9, C_3, C_5)$-free graphs, thus making progress towards determining the complexity of $3$-colouring in $P_t$-free graphs, which is open for $t\ge 8$.

Kalai's conjecture in $r$-partite $r$-graphs
Kalai conjectured that every $n$-vertex $r$-uniform hypergraph with more than $\frac{t-1}{r} {n \choose r-1}$ edges contains all tight $r$-trees of some fixed size $t$. We prove Kalai's conjecture for $r$-partite $r$-uniform hypergraphs. Our result is asymptotically best possible up to replacing the term $\frac{t-1}{r}$ with the term $\frac{t-r+1}{r}$. We apply our main result in graphs to show an upper bound for the Turán number of trees.

Clique immersions and independence number

The analogue of Hadwiger's conjecture for the immersion order states that every graph $G$ contains $K_{χ(G)}$ as an immersion. If true, it would imply that every graph with $n$ vertices and independence number $α$ contains $K_{\lceil \frac nα\rceil}$ as an immersion. The best currently known bound for this conjecture is due to Gauthier, Le and Wollan, who recently proved that every graph $G$ contains an immersion of a clique on $\bigl\lceil \frac{χ(G)-4}{3.54}\bigr\rceil$ vertices. Their result implies that every $n$-vertex graph with independence number $α$ contains an immersion of a clique on $\bigl\lceil \frac{n}{3.54α}-1.13\bigr\rceil$ vertices. We improve on this result for all $α\ge 3$, by showing that every $n$-vertex graph with independence number $α\ge 3$ contains an immersion of a clique on $\bigl\lfloor \frac {n}{2.25 α- f(α)} \bigr\rfloor - 1$ vertices, where $f$ is a nonnegative function.

We prove the Erd\H os--Sós conjecture for trees with bounded maximum degree and large dense host graphs. As a corollary, we obtain an upper bound on the multicolour Ramsey number of large trees whose maximum degree is bounded by a constant.

Spanning Trees in Graphs of High Minimum Degree with a Universal Vertex I: An Asymptotic Result
In this paper and a companion paper, we prove that, if $m$ is sufficiently large, every graph on $m+1$ vertices that has a universal vertex and minimum degree at least $\lfloor \frac{2m}{3} \rfloor$ contains each tree $T$ with $m$ edges as a subgraph. Our result confirms, for large $m$, an important special case of a recent conjecture by Havet, Reed, Stein, and Wood. The present paper already contains an approximate version of the result.

Spanning Trees in Graphs of High Minimum Degree with a Universal Vertex II: A Tight Result
We prove that, if $m$ is sufficiently large, every graph on $m+1$ vertices that has a universal vertex and minimum degree at least $\lfloor \frac{2m}{3} \rfloor$ contains each tree $T$ with $m$ edges as a subgraph. Our result confirms, for large $m$, an important special case of a conjecture by Havet, Reed, Stein, and Wood. The present paper builds on the results of a companion paper in which we proved the statement for all trees having a vertex that is adjacent to many leaves.

Maximum and minimum degree conditions for embedding trees
Published • View PublicationBIB
We propose the following conjecture: For every fixed $α\in [0,\frac 13)$, each graph of minimum degree at least $(1+α)\frac k2$ and maximum degree at least $2(1-α)k$ contains each tree with $k$ edges as a subgraph. Our main result is an approximate version of the conjecture for bounded degree trees and large dense host graphs. We also show that our conjecture is asymptotically best possible. The proof of the approximate result relies on a second result, which we believe to be interesting on its own. Namely, we can embed any bounded degree tree into host graphs of minimum/maximum degree asymptotically exceeding $\frac k2$ and $\frac 43k$, respectively, as long as the host graph avoids a specific structure.

Degree conditions for embedding trees

We conjecture that every $n$-vertex graph of minimum degree at least $\frac k2$ and maximum degree at least $2k$ contains all trees with $k$ edges as subgraphs. We prove an approximate version of this conjecture for trees of bounded degree and dense host graphs. Our work also has implications on the Erd\H os--Sós conjecture and the $\frac 23$-conjecture. We prove an approximate version of both conjectures for bounded degree trees and dense host graphs.

Partitioning $2$-coloured complete $k$-uniform hypergraphs into monochromatic $\ell$-cycles
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that for all $\ell, k, n$ with $\ell \leq k/2$ and $(k-\ell)$ dividing $n$ the following hypergraph-variant of Lehel's conjecture is true. Every $2$-edge-colouring of the $k$-uniform complete hypergraph $\mathcal{K}_n^{(k)}$ on $n$ vertices has at most two disjoint monochromatic $\ell$-cycles in different colours that together cover all but at most $4(k-\ell)$ vertices. If $\ell \leq k/3$, then at most two $\ell$-cycles cover all but at most $2(k-\ell)$ vertices. Furthermore, we can cover all vertices with at most $4$ ($3$ if $\ell\leq k/3$) disjoint monochromatic $\ell$-cycles.

Almost partitioning 2-coloured complete 3-uniform hypergraphs into two monochromatic tight or loose cycles

We show that for every η > 0 there exists an integer n_0 such that every 2-colouring of the 3-uniform complete hypergraph on n \geq n_0 vertices contains two disjoint monochromatic tight cycles of distinct colours that together cover all but at most ηn vertices. The same result holds if we replace tight cycles with loose cycles.

A Variant of the Erdős-Sós Conjecture
Published in Journal of Graph Theory 94.1:131-158, 2020 • View PublicationBIB
A well-known conjecture of Erdős and Sós states that every graph with average degree exceeding $m-1$ contains every tree with $m$ edges as a subgraph. We propose a variant of this conjecture, which states that every graph of maximum degree exceeding $m$ and minimum degree at least $\lfloor \frac{2m}{3}\rfloor$ contains every tree with $m$ edges. As evidence for our conjecture we show (i) for every $m$ there is a $g(m)$ such that the weakening of the conjecture obtained by replacing $m$ by $g(m)$ holds, and (ii) there is a $γ>0$ such that the weakening of the conjecture obtained by replacing $\lfloor \frac{2m}{3}\rfloor$ by $(1-γ)m$ holds.
Approximately coloring graphs without long induced paths
Published • View PublicationBIB
It is an open problem whether the 3-coloring problem can be solved in polynomial time in the class of graphs that do not contain an induced path on $t$ vertices, for fixed $t$. We propose an algorithm that, given a 3-colorable graph without an induced path on $t$ vertices, computes a coloring with $\max\{5,2\lceil{\frac{t-1}{2}}\rceil-2\}$ many colors. If the input graph is triangle-free, we only need $\max\{4,\lceil{\frac{t-1}{2}}\rceil+1\}$ many colors. The running time of our algorithm is $O((3^{t-2}+t^2)m+n)$ if the input graph has $n$ vertices and $m$ edges.

Clique coloring $B_1$-EPG graphs
Published in Discrete Mathematics 340(5) (2017), 1008-1011 • View PublicationBIB
We consider the problem of clique coloring, that is, coloring the vertices of a given graph such that no (maximal) clique of size at least two is monocolored. It is known that interval graphs are $2$-clique colorable. In this paper we prove that $B_1$-EPG graphs (edge intersection graphs of paths on a grid, where each path has at most one bend) are $4$-clique colorable. Moreover, given a $B_1$-EPG representation of a graph, we provide a linear time algorithm that constructs a $4$-clique coloring of it.

Monochromatic tree covers and Ramsey numbers for set-coloured graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider a generalisation of the classical Ramsey theory setting to a setting where each of the edges of the underlying host graph is coloured with a {\em set} of colours (instead of just one colour). We give bounds for monochromatic tree covers in this setting, both for an underlying complete graph, and an underlying complete bipartite graph. We also discuss a generalisation of Ramsey numbers to our setting and propose some other new directions. Our results for tree covers in complete graphs imply that a stronger version of Ryser's conjecture holds for $k$-intersecting $r$-partite $r$-uniform hypergraphs: they have a transversal of size at most $r-k$. (Similar results have been obtained by Király et al., see below.) However, we also show that the bound $r-k$ is not best possible in general.
