Some Structure Properties of Finite Normal-Form Games
Game theory provides a mathematical framework for analysing strategic situations involving at least two players. Normal-form games model situations where the players simultaneously pick their moves. In this thesis we explore the strategic structure of finite normal-form games.
We look at three notions of isomorphisms between games, the structural properties that they preserve and under what conditions they are met. We also look at various notions of symmetric games, under what conditions they are met, the structural properties that these notions capture, how to identify them and how to construct them.
Lattice paths and submonoids of $\mathbb Z^2$

We study a number of combinatorial and algebraic structures arising from walks on the two-dimensional integer lattice. To a given step set $X\subseteq\mathbb Z^2$, there are two naturally associated monoids: $\mathscr F_X$, the monoid of all $X$-walks/paths; and $\mathscr A_X$, the monoid of all endpoints of $X$-walks starting from the origin $O$. For each $A\in\mathscr A_X$, write $π_X(A)$ for the number of $X$-walks from $O$ to $A$. Calculating the numbers $π_X(A)$ is a classical problem, leading to Fibonacci, Catalan, Motzkin, Delannoy and Schroder numbers, among many other well-studied sequences and arrays. Our main results give relationships between finiteness properties of the numbers $π_X(A)$, geometrical properties of the step set $X$, algebraic properties of the monoid $\mathscr A_X$, and combinatorial properties of a certain bi-labelled digraph naturally associated to $X$. There is an intriguing divergence between the cases of finite and infinite step sets, and some constructions rely on highly non-trivial properties of real numbers. We also consider the case of walks constrained to stay within a given region of the plane. Several examples are considered throughout to highlight the sometimes-subtle nature of the theoretical results.
The Planar Modular Partition Monoid
The primary contribution of this thesis is to introduce and examine the planar modular partition monoid for parameters $m, k \in \mathbb{Z}_{>0}$, which has simultaneously and independently generated interest from other researchers as outlined within.
Our collective understanding of related monoids, in particular the Jones, Brauer and partition monoids, along with the algebras they generate, has heavily influenced the direction of research by a significant number of mathematicians and physicists. Examples include Schur-Weyl type dualities in representation theory along with Potts, ice-type and Andrew-Baxter-Forrester models from statistical mechanics, giving strong motivation for the planar modular partition monoid to be examined.
The original results contained within this thesis relating to the planar modular partition monoid are: the establishment of generators; recurrence relations for the cardinality of the monoid; recurrence relations for the cardinality of Green's $\mathcal{R}$, $\mathcal{L}$ and $\mathcal{D}$ relations; and a conjecture on relations that appear to present the planar modular partition monoid when $m=2$. For diagram semigroups that are closed under vertical reflections, characterisations of Green's $\mathcal{R}$, $\mathcal{L}$ and $\mathcal{H}$ relations have previously been established using the upper and lower patterns of bipartitions. We give a characterisation of Green's $\mathcal{D}$ relation with a similar flavour for diagram semigroups that are closed under vertical reflections.

A further contribution of this thesis is a reasonably comprehensive exposition of the fundamentals of diagram semigroups, which have traditionally been approached from the representation theory side and have since blossomed into a thriving area of research in their own right.
Enumeration of idempotents in planar diagram monoids

We classify and enumerate the idempotents in several planar diagram monoids: namely, the Motzkin, Jones (a.k.a. Temperley-Lieb) and Kauffman monoids. The classification is in terms of certain vertex- and edge-coloured graphs associated to Motzkin diagrams. The enumeration is necessarily algorithmic in nature, and is based on parameters associated to cycle components of these graphs. We compare our algorithms to existing algorithms for enumerating idempotents in arbitrary (regular *-) semigroups, and give several tables of calculated values.

We give a characterisation of the idempotents of the partition monoid, and use this to enumerate the idempotents in the finite partition, Brauer and partial Brauer monoids, giving several formulae and recursions for the number of idempotents in each monoid as well as various $\mathscr R$-, $\mathscr L$- and $\mathscr D$-classes. We also apply our results to determine the number of idempotent basis elements in the finite dimensional partition, Brauer and partial Brauer algebras.
Notions of Anonymity, Fairness and Symmetry for Finite Strategic-Form Games
In this paper we survey various notions of anonymity and symmetry for finite strategic-form games present in relevant literature, and discuss notions of fairness; show that game bijections and game isomorphisms form groupoids; introduce matchings as a convenient characterisation of strategy triviality; and outline how to construct and partially order parameterised (symmetric) games with examples that range all combinations of surveyed symmetry notions, which when combined with other results in this paper gives the precise relationship between the various symmetry notions.
