Transformation representations of diagram monoids
We obtain formulae for the minimum transformation degrees of the most well-studied families of finite diagram monoids, including the partition, Brauer, Temperley--Lieb and Motzkin monoids. For example, the partition monoid $P_n$ has degree $1 + \frac{B(n+2)-B(n+1)+B(n)}2$ for $n\geq2$, where these are Bell numbers. The proofs involve constructing explicit faithful representations of the minimum degree, many of which can be realised as (partial) actions on projections.
Diameters of endomorphism monoids of chains
The left and right diameters of a monoid are topological invariants defined in terms of suprema of lengths of derivation sequences with respect to finite generating sets for the universal left or right congruences. We compute these parameters for the endomorphism monoid $End(C)$ of a chain $C$. Specifically, if $C$ is infinite then the left diameter of $End(C)$ is 2, while the right diameter is either 2 or 3, with the latter equal to 2 precisely when $C$ is a quotient of $C{\setminus}\{z\}$ for some endpoint $z$. If $C$ is finite then so is $End(C),$ in which case the left and right diameters are 1 (if $C$ is non-trivial) or 0.
On the enumeration of integer tetrahedra

We consider the problem of enumerating integer tetrahedra of fixed perimeter (sum of side-lengths) and/or diameter (maximum side-length), up to congruence. As we will see, this problem is considerably more difficult than the corresponding problem for triangles, which has long been solved. We expect there are no closed-form solutions to the tetrahedron enumeration problems, but we explore the extent to which they can be approached via classical methods, such as orbit enumeration. We also discuss algorithms for computing the numbers, and present several tables and figures that can be used to visualise the data. Several intriguing patterns seem to emerge, leading to a number of natural conjectures. The central conjecture is that the number of integer tetrahedra of perimeter $n$, up to congruence, is asymptotic to $n^5/C$ for some constant $C\approx 229000$.
Minimum degrees of finite rectangular bands, null semigroups, and variants of full transformation semigroups

For a positive integer $n$, the full transformation semigroup $T_n$ consists of all self maps of the set $\{1,\ldots,n\}$ under composition. Any finite semigroup $S$ embeds in some $T_n$, and the least such $n$ is called the (minimum transformation) degree of $S$ and denoted $μ(S)$. We find degrees for various classes of finite semigroups, including rectangular bands, rectangular groups and null semigroups. The formulae we give involve natural parameters associated to integer compositions. Our results on rectangular bands answer a question of Easdown from 1992, and our approach utilises some results of independent interest concerning partitions/colourings of hypergraphs.
As an application, we prove some results on the degree of a variant $T_n^a$. (The variant $S^a=(S,\star)$ of a semigroup $S$, with respect to a fixed element $a\in S$, has underlying set $S$ and operation $x\star y=xay$.) It has been previously shown that $n\leq μ(T_n^a)\leq 2n-r$ if the sandwich element $a$ has rank $r$, and the upper bound of $2n-r$ is known to be sharp if $r\geq n-1$. Here we show that $μ(T_n^a)=2n-r$ for $r\geq n-6$. In stark contrast to this, when $r=1$, and the above inequality says $n\leqμ(T_n^a)\leq 2n-1$, we show that $μ(T_n^a)/n\to1$ and $μ(T_n^a)-n\to\infty$ as $n\to\infty$.
Among other results, we also classify the $3$-nilpotent subsemigroups of $T_n$, and calculate the maximum size of such a subsemigroup.

We give a thorough structural analysis of the principal one-sided ideals of arbitrary semigroups, and then apply this to full transformation semigroups and symmetric inverse monoids. One-sided ideals of these semigroups naturally occur as semigroups of transformations with restricted range or kernel.
Sandwich semigroups in diagram categories
This paper concerns a number of diagram categories, namely the partition, planar partition, Brauer, partial Brauer, Motzkin and Temperley-Lieb categories. If $\mathcal K$ denotes any of these categories, and if $σ\in\mathcal K_{nm}$ is a fixed morphism, then an associative operation $\star_σ$ may be defined on $\mathcal K_{mn}$ by $α\star_σβ=ασβ$. The resulting semigroup $\mathcal K_{mn}^σ=(\mathcal K_{mn},\star_σ)$ is called a sandwich semigroup. We conduct a thorough investigation of these sandwich semigroups, with an emphasis on structural and combinatorial properties such as Green's relations and preorders, regularity, stability, mid-identities, ideal structure, (products of) idempotents, and minimal generation. It turns out that the Brauer category has many remarkable properties not shared by any of the other diagram categories we study. Because of these unique properties, we may completely classify isomorphism classes of sandwich semigroups in the Brauer category, calculate the rank (smallest size of a generating set) of an arbitrary sandwich semigroup, enumerate Green's classes and idempotents, and calculate ranks (and idempotent ranks, where appropriate) of the regular subsemigroup and its ideals, as well as the idempotent-generated subsemigroup. Several illustrative examples are considered throughout, partly to demonstrate the sometimes-subtle differences between the various diagram categories.

We study a number of combinatorial and algebraic structures arising from walks on the two-dimensional integer lattice. To a given step set $X\subseteq\mathbb Z^2$, there are two naturally associated monoids: $\mathscr F_X$, the monoid of all $X$-walks/paths; and $\mathscr A_X$, the monoid of all endpoints of $X$-walks starting from the origin $O$. For each $A\in\mathscr A_X$, write $π_X(A)$ for the number of $X$-walks from $O$ to $A$. Calculating the numbers $π_X(A)$ is a classical problem, leading to Fibonacci, Catalan, Motzkin, Delannoy and Schroder numbers, among many other well-studied sequences and arrays. Our main results give relationships between finiteness properties of the numbers $π_X(A)$, geometrical properties of the step set $X$, algebraic properties of the monoid $\mathscr A_X$, and combinatorial properties of a certain bi-labelled digraph naturally associated to $X$. There is an intriguing divergence between the cases of finite and infinite step sets, and some constructions rely on highly non-trivial properties of real numbers. We also consider the case of walks constrained to stay within a given region of the plane. Several examples are considered throughout to highlight the sometimes-subtle nature of the theoretical results.

A classical result of Honsberger states that the number of incongruent triangles with integer sides and perimeter $n$ is the nearest integer to $\frac{n^2}{48}$ ($n$ even) or $\frac{(n+3)^2}{48}$ ($n$ odd). We solve the analogous problem for $m$-gons (for arbitrary but fixed $m\geq3$), and for polygons (with arbitrary number of sides). We also show that the solution to the latter is asymptotic to $\frac{2^{n-1}}n$, and the former (for fixed $m$) to $\frac{2^{m-1}-m}{2^mm!}n^{m-1}$.

We give a complete description of the congruence lattices of the following finite diagram monoids: the partition monoid, the planar partition monoid, the Brauer monoid, the Jones monoid (also known as the Temperley-Lieb monoid), the Motzkin monoid, and the partial Brauer monoid. All the congruences under discussion arise as special instances of a new construction, involving an ideal I, a retraction I->M onto the minimal ideal, a congruence on M, and a normal subgroup of a maximal subgroup outside I.
Structural aspects of semigroups based on digraphs

Given any digraph $D$ without loops or multiple arcs, there is a natural construction of a semigroup $\langle D\rangle$ of transformations. To every arc $(a,b)$ of $D$ is associated the idempotent transformation $(a\to b)$ mapping $a$ to $b$ and fixing all vertices other than $a$. The semigroup $\langle D\rangle$ is generated by the idempotent transformations $(a\to b)$ for all arcs $(a,b)$ of $D$.
In this paper, we consider the question of when there is a transformation in $\langle D\rangle$ containing a large cycle, and, for fixed $k\in \mathbb N$, we give a linear time algorithm to verify if $\langle D\rangle$ contains a transformation with a cycle of length $k$. We also classify those digraphs $D$ such that $\langle D\rangle$ has one of the following properties: inverse, completely regular, commutative, simple, 0-simple, a semilattice, a rectangular band, congruence-free, is $\mathscr{K}$-trivial or $\mathscr{K}$-universal where $\mathscr{K}$ is any of Green's $\mathscr{H}$-, $\mathscr{L}$-, $\mathscr{R}$-, or $\mathscr{J}$-relation, and when $\langle D\rangle$ has a left, right, or two-sided zero.

The set D_n of all difunctional relations on an n element set is an inverse semigroup under a variation of the usual composition operation. We solve an open problem of Kudryavtseva and Maltcev (2011), which asks: What is the rank (smallest size of a generating set) of D_n? Specifically, we show that the rank of D_n is B(n)+n, where B(n) is the nth Bell number. We also give the rank of an arbitrary ideal of D_n. Although D_n bears many similarities with families such as the full transformation semigroups and symmetric inverse semigroups (all contain the symmetric group and have a chain of J-classes), we note that the fast growth of rank(D_n) as a function of n is a property not shared with these other families.

We study the partial Brauer monoid and its planar submonoid, the Motzkin monoid. We conduct a thorough investigation of the structure of both monoids, providing information on normal forms, Green's relations, regularity, ideals, idempotent generation, minimal (idempotent) generating sets, and so on. We obtain necessary and sufficient conditions under which the ideals of these monoids are idempotent-generated. We find formulae for the rank (smallest size of a generating set) of each ideal, and for the idempotent rank (smallest size of an idempotent generating set) of the idempotent-generated subsemigroup of each ideal; in particular, when an ideal is idempotent-generated, the rank and idempotent rank are equal. Along the way, we obtain a number of results of independent interest, and we demonstrate the utility of the semigroup theoretic approach by applying our results to obtain new proofs of important representation theoretic results concerning the corresponding diagram algebras, the partial (or rook) Brauer algebra and Motzkin algebra.
Twisted Brauer monoids

We investigate the structure of the twisted Brauer monoid $\mathcal B_n^τ$, comparing and contrasting it to the structure of the (untwisted) Brauer monoid $\mathcal B_n$. We characterise Green's relations and pre-orders on $\mathcal B_n^τ$, describe the lattice of ideals, and give necessary and sufficient conditions for an ideal to be idempotent-generated. We obtain formulae for the rank (smallest size of a generating set) and (where applicable) the idempotent rank (smallest size of an idempotent generating set) of each principal ideal; in particular, when an ideal is idempotent-generated, its rank and idempotent rank are equal. As an application of our results, we also describe the idempotent-generated subsemigroup of $\mathcal B_n^τ$ (which is not an ideal) as well as the singular ideal of $\mathcal B_n^τ$ (which is neither principal nor idempotent-generated), and we deduce a result of Maltcev and Mazorchuk that the singular part of the Brauer monoid $\mathcal B_n$ is idempotent-generated.
Enumeration of idempotents in planar diagram monoids

We classify and enumerate the idempotents in several planar diagram monoids: namely, the Motzkin, Jones (a.k.a. Temperley-Lieb) and Kauffman monoids. The classification is in terms of certain vertex- and edge-coloured graphs associated to Motzkin diagrams. The enumeration is necessarily algorithmic in nature, and is based on parameters associated to cycle components of these graphs. We compare our algorithms to existing algorithms for enumerating idempotents in arbitrary (regular *-) semigroups, and give several tables of calculated values.

We give a characterisation of the idempotents of the partition monoid, and use this to enumerate the idempotents in the finite partition, Brauer and partial Brauer monoids, giving several formulae and recursions for the number of idempotents in each monoid as well as various $\mathscr R$-, $\mathscr L$- and $\mathscr D$-classes. We also apply our results to determine the number of idempotent basis elements in the finite dimensional partition, Brauer and partial Brauer algebras.
