The complete picture for clique factors in randomly perturbed graphs
A randomly perturbed graph $G^p = G_α\cup G_{n,p}$ is obtained by taking a deterministic $n$-vertex graph $G_α= (V, E)$ with minimum degree $δ(G)\geq αn$ and adding the edges of the binomial random graph $G_{n,p}$ defined on the same vertex set $V$. For which value $p$ (depending on $α$) does the graph $G^p$ contain a $K_r$-factor -- a spanning collection of vertex-disjoint copies of $K_r$ -- with high probability? The order of magnitude of the minimum such $p$ was determined whenever $α\neq 1- \frac{s}{r}$ for an integer $s$ by Balogh, Treglown and Wagner, and by Han, Morris and Treglown. In earlier work, the first three authors determined this threshold probability $p_s$ up to a constant factor for all values of $α= 1-\frac{s}{r}\leq \frac 12$. Here, we complete the picture by establishing $p_s$ in the remaining case $α> \frac12$. A key ingredient in our approach is an extremal result of independent interest: we prove a fractional stability version of a tiling theorem due to Shokoufandeh and Zhao.

Clique factors in randomly perturbed graphs: the transition points
A randomly perturbed graph $G^p = G_α\cup G(n,p)$ is obtained by taking a deterministic $n$-vertex graph $G_α= (V, E)$ with minimum degree $δ(G)\geq αn$ and adding the edges of the binomial random graph $G(n,p)$ defined on the same vertex set $V$. For which value $p$ (depending on $α$) does the graph $G^p$ contain a $K_r$-factor (a spanning collection of vertex-disjoint $K_r$-copies) with high probability? The order of magnitude of the minimal value of $p$ has been determined whenever $α\neq 1- \frac{s}{r}$ for an integer $s$ (see Han, Morris, and Treglown [RSA, 2021] and Balogh, Treglown, and Wagner [CPC, 2019]). We establish the minimal probability $p_s$ (up to a constant factor) for all values of $α= 1-\frac{s}{r} \leq \frac 12$, and show that the threshold exhibits a polynomial jump at $α= 1-\frac{s}{r}$ compared to the surrounding intervals. An extremal example $G_α$ which shows that $p_s$ is optimal up to a constant factor differs from the previous (usually multipartite) examples in containing a pseudorandom induced subgraph.
When $t$-intersecting hypergraphs admit bounded $c$-strong colourings
The $c$-strong chromatic number of a hypergraph is the smallest number of colours needed to colour its vertices so that every edge sees at least $c$ colours or is rainbow. We show that every $t$-intersecting hypergraph has bounded $(t + 1)$-strong chromatic number, resolving a problem of Blais, Weinstein and Yoshida. In fact, we characterise when a $t$-intersecting hypergraph has large $c$-strong chromatic number for $c\geq t+2$. Our characterisation also applies to hypergraphs which exclude sunflowers with specified parameters.
Triangle-free graphs with diameter 2
There are finitely many graphs with diameter $2$ and girth 5. What if the girth 5 assumption is relaxed? Apart from stars, are there finitely many triangle-free graphs with diameter $2$ and no $K_{2,3}$ subgraph? This question is related to the existence of triangle-free strongly regular graphs, but allowing for a range of co-degrees gives the question a more extremal flavour. More generally, for fixed $s$ and $t$, are there infinitely many twin-free triangle-free $K_{s,t}$-free graphs with diameter 2? This paper presents partial results regarding these questions, including computational results, potential Cayley-graph and probabilistic constructions.

Universal lower bound for community structure of sparse graphs
We prove new lower bounds on the modularity of graphs. Specifically, the modularity of a graph $G$ with average degree $\bar d$ is $Ω(\bar{d}^{-1/2})$, under some mild assumptions on the degree sequence of $G$. The lower bound $Ω(\bar{d}^{-1/2})$ applies, for instance, to graphs with a power-law degree sequence or a near-regular degree sequence. It has been suggested that the relatively high modularity of the Erdős-Rényi random graph $G_{n,p}$ stems from the random fluctuations in its edge distribution, however our results imply high modularity for any graph with a degree sequence matching that typically found in $G_{n,p}$. The proof of the new lower bound relies on certain weight-balanced bisections with few cross-edges, which build on ideas of Alon [Combinatorics, Probability and Computing (1997)] and may be of independent interest.

Increasing paths in random temporal graphs
We consider random temporal graphs, a version of the classical Erdős--Rényi random graph G(n,p) where additionally, each edge has a distinct random time stamp, and connectivity is constrained to sequences of edges with increasing time stamps. We study the asymptotics for the distances in such graphs, mostly in the regime of interest where np is of order log n. We establish the first order asymptotics for the lengths of increasing paths: the lengths of the shortest and longest paths between typical vertices, the maxima of these lengths from a given vertex, as well as the maxima between any two vertices; this covers the (temporal) diameter.

Canonical colourings in random graphs
Rödl and Ruciński (1990) established Ramsey's theorem for random graphs. In particular, for fixed integers $r$, $\ell\geq 2$ they showed that $\hat p_{K_\ell,r}(n)=n^{-\frac{2}{\ell+1}}$ is a threshold for the Ramsey property that every $r$-colouring of the edges of the binomial random graph $G(n,p)$ yields a monochromatic copy of $K_\ell$. We investigate how this result extends to arbitrary colourings of $G(n,p)$ with an unbounded number of colours. In this situation, Erdős and Rado showed that canonically coloured copies of $K_\ell$ can be ensured in the deterministic setting. We transfer the Erdős-Rado theorem to the random environment and show that both thresholds coincide for $\ell\geq 4$. As a consequence, the proof yields $K_{\ell+1}$-free graphs $G$ for which every edge colouring contains a canonically coloured $K_\ell$. The $0$-statement of the threshold is a direct consequence of the corresponding statement of the Rödl-Ruciński theorem and the main contribution is the $1$-statement. The proof of the $1$-statement employs the transference principle of Conlon and Gowers.

The Turán density of tight cycles in three-uniform hypergraphs
The Turán density of an $r$-uniform hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$, denoted $π(\mathcal{H})$, is the limit of the maximum density of an $n$-vertex $r$-uniform hypergraph not containing a copy of $\mathcal{H}$, as $n \to \infty$. Denote by $\mathcal{C}_{\ell}$ the $3$-uniform tight cycle on $\ell$ vertices. Mubayi and Rödl gave an ``iterated blow-up'' construction showing that the Turán density of $\mathcal{C}_5$ is at least $2\sqrt{3} - 3 \approx 0.464$, and this bound is conjectured to be tight. Their construction also does not contain $\mathcal{C}_{\ell}$ for larger $\ell$ not divisible by $3$, which suggests that it might be the extremal construction for these hypergraphs as well. Here, we determine the Turán density of $\mathcal{C}_{\ell}$ for all large $\ell$ not divisible by $3$, showing that indeed $π(\mathcal{C}_{\ell}) = 2\sqrt{3} - 3$. To our knowledge, this is the first example of a Turán density being determined where the extremal construction is an iterated blow-up construction. A key component in our proof, which may be of independent interest, is a $3$-uniform analogue of the statement ``a graph is bipartite if and only if it does not contain an odd cycle''.

Unavoidable patterns in locally balanced colourings
Which patterns must a two-colouring of $K_n$ contain if each vertex has at least $\varepsilon n$ red and $\varepsilon n$ blue neighbours? In this paper, we investigate this question and its multicolour variant. For instance, we show that any such graph contains a $t$-blow-up of an \textit{alternating 4-cycle} with $t = Ω(\log n)$.

Towards a characterisation of Sidorenko systems
Published in The Quarterly Journal of Mathematics, Volume 74, Issue 3, September 2023, Pages 957-974 • View PublicationBIB
A system of linear forms $L=\{L_1,\ldots,L_m\}$ over $\mathbb{F}_q$ is said to be Sidorenko if the number of solutions to $L=0$ in any $A \subseteq \mathbb{F}_{q}^n$ is asymptotically as $n\to\infty$ at least the expected number of solutions in a random set of the same density. Work of Saad and Wolf (2017) and of Fox, Pham and Zhao (2019) fully characterises single equations with this property and both sets of authors ask about a characterisation of Sidorenko systems of equations. In this paper, we make progress towards this goal. Firstly, we find a simple necessary condition for a system to be Sidorenko, thus providing a rich family of non-Sidorenko systems. In the opposite direction, we find a large family of structured Sidorenko systems, by utilising the entropy method. We also make significant progress towards a full classification of systems of two equations.

On uncommon systems of equations
A system of linear equations $L$ over $\mathbb{F}_q$ is common if the number of monochromatic solutions to $L$ in any two-colouring of $\mathbb{F}_q^n$ is asymptotically at least the expected number of monochromatic solutions in a random two-colouring of $\mathbb{F}_q^n$. Motivated by existing results for specific systems (such as Schur triples and arithmetic progressions), as well as extensive research on common and Sidorenko graphs, the systematic study of common systems of linear equations was recently initiated by Saad and Wolf. Building upon earlier work of Cameron, Cilleruelo and Serra, as well as Saad and Wolf, common linear equations have recently been fully characterised by Fox, Pham and Zhao, who asked about common \emph{systems} of equations. In this paper we move towards a classification of common systems of two or more linear equations. In particular we prove that any system containing an arithmetic progression of length four is uncommon, confirming a conjecture of Saad and Wolf. This follows from a more general result which allows us to deduce the uncommonness of a general system from certain properties of one- or two-equation subsystems.

Asymptotic enumeration of hypergraphs by degree sequence
Published in Advances in Combinatorics 2022:1, 36pp • View PublicationBIB
We prove an asymptotic formula for the number of $k$-uniform hypergraphs with a given degree sequence, for a wide range of parameters. In particular, we find a formula that is asymptotically equal to the number of $d$-regular $k$-uniform hypergraphs on $n$ vertices provided that $dn\le c\binom{n}{k}$ for a constant $c>0$, and $3 \leq k < n^C$ for any $C<1/9.$ Our results relate the degree sequence of a random $k$-uniform hypergraph to a simple model of nearly independent binomial random variables, thus extending the recent results for graphs due to the second and third author.
Properly colored Hamilton cycles in Dirac-type hypergraphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider a robust variant of Dirac-type problems in $k$-uniform hypergraphs. For instance, we prove that if $H$ is a $k$-uniform hypergraph with minimum codegree at least $(1/2 + γ)n$, $γ>0$, and $n$ is sufficiently large, then any edge coloring $φ$ satisfying appropriate local constraints yields a properly colored tight Hamilton cycle in $H$. Similar results for loose cycles are also shown.
The size Ramsey number of graphs with bounded treewidth
Published • View PublicationBIB
A graph $G$ is Ramsey for a graph $H$ if every 2-colouring of the edges of $G$ contains a monochromatic copy of $H$. We consider the following question: if $H$ has bounded treewidth, is there a `sparse' graph $G$ that is Ramsey for $H$? Two notions of sparsity are considered. Firstly, we show that if the maximum degree and treewidth of $H$ are bounded, then there is a graph $G$ with $O(|V(H)|)$ edges that is Ramsey for $H$. This was previously only known for the smaller class of graphs $H$ with bounded bandwidth. On the other hand, we prove that the treewidth of a graph $G$ that is Ramsey for $H$ cannot be bounded in terms of the treewidth of $H$ alone. In fact, the latter statement is true even if the treewidth is replaced by the degeneracy and $H$ is a tree.
The Kőnig Graph Process
Say that a graph G has property $\mathcal{K}$ if the size of its maximum matching is equal to the order of a minimal vertex cover. We study the following process. Set $N:= \binom{n}{2}$ and let $e_1, e_2, \dots e_{N}$ be a uniformly random ordering of the edges of $K_n$, with $n$ an even integer. Let $G_0$ be the empty graph on $n$ vertices. For $m \geq 0$, $G_{m+1}$ is obtained from $G_m$ by adding the edge $e_{m+1}$ exactly if $G_m \cup \{ e_{m+1}\}$ has property $\mathcal{K}$. We analyse the behaviour of this process, focusing mainly on two questions: What can be said about the structure of $G_N$ and for which $m$ will $G_m$ contain a perfect matching?

Another Note on Intervals in the Hales-Jewett Theorem
The Hales-Jewett Theorem states that any $r$-colouring of $[m]^n$ contains a monochromatic combinatorial line if $n$ is large enough. Shelah's proof of the theorem implies that for $m = 3$ there always exists a monochromatic combinatorial lines whose set of active coordinates is the union of at most $r$ intervals. Conlon and Kamčev proved the existence of colourings for which it cannot be fewer than $r$ intervals if $r$ is odd. For $r = 2$ however, Leader and Räty showed that one can always find a monochromatic combinatorial line whose active coordinate set is a single interval. In this paper, we extend the result of Leader and Räty to the case of all even $r$, showing that one can always find a monochromatic combinatorial line in $[3]^n$ whose set of active coordinate is the union of at most $r-1$ intervals.

Intervals in the Hales-Jewett theorem
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Hales-Jewett theorem states that for any $m$ and $r$ there exists an $n$ such that any $r$-colouring of the elements of $[m]^n$ contains a monochromatic combinatorial line. We study the structure of the wildcard set $S \subseteq [n]$ which determines this monochromatic line, showing that when $r$ is odd there are $r$-colourings of $[3]^n$ where the wildcard set of a monochromatic line cannot be the union of fewer than $r$ intervals. This is tight, as for $n$ sufficiently large there are always monochromatic lines whose wildcard set is the union of at most $r$ intervals.

Zero forcing number of graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A subset $S$ of initially infected vertices of a graph $G$ is called forcing if we can infect the entire graph by iteratively applying the following process. At each step, any infected vertex which has a unique uninfected neighbour, infects this neighbour. The forcing number of $G$ is the minimum cardinality of a forcing set in $G$. In the present paper, we study the forcing number of various classes of graphs, including graphs of large girth, $H$-free graphs for a fixed bipartite graph $H$, random and pseudorandom graphs.

Anagram-free colorings of graphs
A sequence $S$ is called anagram-free if it contains no consecutive symbols $r_1 r_2\dots r_k r_{k+1} \dots r_{2k}$ such that $r_{k+1} \dots r_{2k}$ is a permutation of the block $r_1 r_2\dots r_k$. Answering a question of Erdős and Brown, Keränen constructed an infinite anagram-free sequence on four symbols. Motivated by the work of Alon, Grytczuk, Hałuszczak and Riordan, we consider a natural generalisation of anagram-free sequences for graph colorings. A coloring of the vertices of a given graph $G$ is called anagram-free if the sequence of colors on any path in $G$ is anagram-free. We call the minimal number of colors needed for such a coloring the anagram-chromatic number of $G$. In this paper we study the anagram-chromatic number of several classes of graphs like trees, minor-free graphs and bounded-degree graphs. Surprisingly, we show that there are bounded-degree graphs (such as random regular graphs) in which anagrams cannot be avoided unless we basically give each vertex a separate color.

Bounded colorings of multipartite graphs and hypergraphs
Let $c$ be an edge-coloring of the complete $n$-vertex graph $K_n$. The problem of finding properly colored and rainbow Hamilton cycles in $c$ was initiated in 1976 by Bollobás and Erd\H os and has been extensively studied since then. Recently it was extended to the hypergraph setting by Dudek, Frieze and Ruciński. We generalize these results, giving sufficient local (resp. global) restrictions on the colorings which guarantee a properly colored (resp. rainbow) copy of a given hypergraph $G$. We also study multipartite analogues of these questions. We give (up to a constant factor) optimal sufficient conditions for a coloring $c$ of the complete balanced $m$-partite graph to contain a properly colored or rainbow copy of a given graph $G$ with maximum degree $Δ$. Our bounds exhibit a surprising transition in the rate of growth, showing that the problem is fundamentally different in the regimes $Δ\gg m$ and $Δ\ll m$ Our main tool is the framework of Lu and Székely for the space of random bijections, which we extend to product spaces.
