Let $P_n^1,\dots, P_n^d$ be $n\times n$ permutation matrices drawn independently and uniformly at random, and set $S_n^d:=\sum_{\ell=1}^d P_n^\ell$. We show that if $\log^{12}n/(\log \log n)^{4} \le d=O(n)$, then the empirical spectral distribution of $S_n^d/\sqrt{d}$ converges weakly to the circular law in probability as $n \to \infty$.

We analyze the behavior of the Barvinok estimator of the hafnian of even dimension, symmetric matrices with nonnegative entries. We introduce a condition under which the Barvinok estimator achieves subexponential errors, and show that this condition is almost optimal. Using that hafnians count the number of perfect matchings in graphs, we conclude that Barvinok's estimator gives a polynomial-time algorithm for the approximate (up to subexponential errors) evaluation of the number of perfect matchings.

We consider random polynomials whose coefficients are independent and uniform on {-1,1}. We prove that the probability that such a polynomial of degree n has a double root is o(n^{-2}) when n+1 is not divisible by 4 and asymptotic to $\frac{8\sqrt{3}}{πn^2}$ otherwise. This result is a corollary of a more general theorem that we prove concerning random polynomials with independent, identically distributed coefficients having a distribution which is supported on { -1, 0, 1} and whose largest atom is strictly less than 1/\sqrt{3}. In this general case, we prove that the probability of having a double root equals the probability that either -1, 0 or 1 are double roots up to an o(n^{-2}) factor and we find the asymptotics of the latter probability.

Let $\mathcal{S}_n$ be the permutation group on $n$ elements, and consider a random walk on $\mathcal{S}_n$ whose step distribution is uniform on $k$-cycles. We prove a well-known conjecture that the mixing time of this process is $(1/k)n\log n$, with threshold of width linear in $n$. Our proofs are elementary and purely probabilistic, and do not appeal to the representation theory of $\mathcal{S}_n$.

Let U(N) denote the maximal length of arithmetic progressions in a random uniform subset of {0,1}^N. By an application of the Chen-Stein method, we show that U(N)- 2 log(N)/log(2) converges in law to an extreme type (asymmetric) distribution. The same result holds for the maximal length W(N) of arithmetic progressions (mod N). When considered in the natural way on a common probability space, we observe that U(N)/log(N) converges almost surely to 2/log(2), while W(N)/log(N) does not converge almost surely (and in particular, limsup W(N)/log(N) is at least 3/log(2)).

A law of large numbers and a central limit theorem are derived for linear statistics of random symmetric matrices whose on-or-above diagonal entries are independent, but neither necessarily identically distributed, nor necessarily all of the same variance. The derivation is based on systematic combinatorial enumeration, study of generating functions, and concentration inequalities of the Poincare type. Special cases treated, with an explicit evaluation of limiting variances, are generalized Wigner and Wishart matrices.

Let T(x,r) denote the first hitting time of the disc of radius r centered at x for Brownian motion on the two dimensional torus. We prove that sup_{x} T(x,r)/|log r|^2 --> 2/pi as r --> 0. The same applies to Brownian motion on any smooth, compact connected, two-dimensional, Riemannian manifold with unit area and no boundary. As a consequence, we prove a conjecture, due to Aldous (1989), that the number of steps it takes a simple random walk to cover all points of the lattice torus Z_n^2 is asymptotic to (2n log n)^2/pi. Determining these asymptotics is an essential step toward analyzing the fractal structure of the set of uncovered sites before coverage is complete; so far, this structure was only studied non-rigorously in the physics literature. We also establish a conjecture, due to Kesten and Revesz, that describes the asymptotics for the number of steps needed by simple random walk in Z^2 to cover the disc of radius n.
