Let $\mathcal{S}_n$ be the permutation group on $n$ elements, and consider a random walk on $\mathcal{S}_n$ whose step distribution is uniform on $k$-cycles. We prove a well-known conjecture that the mixing time of this process is $(1/k)n\log n$, with threshold of width linear in $n$. Our proofs are elementary and purely probabilistic, and do not appeal to the representation theory of $\mathcal{S}_n$.
Lack of Sphere Packing of Graphs via Non-Linear Potential Theory

It is shown that there is no quasi-sphere packing of the lattice grid Z^{d+1} or a co-compact hyperbolic lattice of H^{d+1} or the 3-regular tree \times Z, in R^d, for all d. A similar result is proved for some other graphs too. Rather than using a direct geometrical approach, the main tools we are using are from non-linear potential theory.
Every Minor-Closed Property of Sparse Graphs is Testable

Suppose $G$ is a graph with degrees bounded by $d$, and one needs to remove more than $εn$ of its edges in order to make it planar. We show that in this case the statistics of local neighborhoods around vertices of $G$ is far from the statistics of local neighborhoods around vertices of any planar graph $G'$ with the same degree bound. In fact, a similar result is proved for any minor-closed property of bounded degree graphs.
As an immediate corollary of the above result we infer that many well studied graph properties, like being planar, outer-planar, series-parallel, bounded genus, bounded tree-width and several others, are testable with a constant number of queries, where the constant may depend on $ε$ and $d$, but not on the graph size. None of these properties was previously known to be testable even with $o(n)$ queries.
Hyperfinite graph limits

Gábor Elek introduced the notion of a hyperfinite graph family: a collection of graphs is hypefinite if for every $ε>0$ there is some finite $k$ such that each graph $G$ in the collection can be broken into connected components of size at most $k$ by removing a set of edges of size at most $ε|V(G)|$. We presently extend this notion to a certain compactification of finite bounded-degree graphs, and show that if a sequence of finite graphs converges to a hyperfinite limit, then the sequence itself is hyperfinite.

The number of spanning trees in the giant component of the random graph $\G(n, c/n)$ ($c>1$) grows like $\exp\big\{m\big(f(c)+o(1)\big)\big\}$ as $n\to\infty$, where $m$ is the number of vertices in the giant component. The function $f$ is not known explicitly, but we show that it is strictly increasing and infinitely differentiable. Moreover, we give an explicit lower bound on $f'(c)$. A key lemma is the following. Let $\PGW(λ)$ denote a Galton-Watson tree having Poisson offspring distribution with parameter $λ$. Suppose that $λ^*>λ>1$. We show that $\PGW(λ^*)$ conditioned to survive forever stochastically dominates $\PGW(λ)$ conditioned to survive forever.

The Andreev-Thurston Circle Packing Theorem is generalized to packings of convex bodies in planar simply connected domains. This turns out to be a useful tool for constructing conformal and quasiconformal mappings with interesting geometric properties. We attempt to illustrate this with a few results about uniformizations of finitely connected planar domains. For example, the following variation of a theorem by Courant, Manel and Shiffman is proved and generalized. If $G$ is an $n+1$-connected bounded planar domain, $H$ is a simply connected bounded planar domain, and $P_1,P_2,...,P_n$ are (compact) planar convex bodies, then sets $P_j'$ can be found so that $G$ is conformally equivalent to $H-\cup_{j=1}^n P_j'$, and each $P_j'$ is either a point, or is positively homothetic to $P_j$.

Suppose that $G_j$ is a sequence of finite connected planar graphs, and in each $G_j$ a special vertex, called the root, is chosen randomly-uniformly. We introduce the notion of a distributional limit $G$ of such graphs. Assume that the vertex degrees of the vertices in $G_j$ are bounded, and the bound does not depend on $j$. Then after passing to a subsequence, the limit exists, and is a random rooted graph $G$. We prove that with probability one $G$ is recurrent. The proof involves the Circle Packing Theorem. The motivation for this work comes from the theory of random spherical triangulations.
Noise Sensitivity of Boolean Functions and Applications to Percolation

It is shown that a large class of events in a product probability space are highly sensitive to noise, in the sense that with high probability, the configuration with an arbitrary small percent of random errors gives almost no prediction whether the event occurs. On the other hand, weighted majority functions are shown to be noise-stable. Several necessary and sufficient conditions for noise sensitivity and stability are given.
Consider, for example, bond percolation on an $n+1$ by $n$ grid. A configuration is a function that assigns to every edge the value 0 or 1. Let $ω$ be a random configuration, selected according to the uniform measure. A crossing is a path that joins the left and right sides of the rectangle, and consists entirely of edges $e$ with $ω(e)=1$. By duality, the probability for having a crossing is 1/2. Fix an $ε\in(0,1)$. For each edge $e$, let $ω'(e)=ω(e)$ with probability $1-ε$, and $ω'(e)=1-ω(e)$ with probability $ε$, independently of the other edges. Let $p(τ)$ be the probability for having a crossing in $ω$, conditioned on $ω'=τ$. Then for all $n$ sufficiently large, $P\{τ: |p(τ)-1/2|>ε\}<ε$.
