An improvement to the Kelley-Meka bounds on three-term arithmetic progressions
In a recent breakthrough Kelley and Meka proved a quasipolynomial upper bound for the density of sets of integers without non-trivial three-term arithmetic progressions. We present a simple modification to their method that strengthens their conclusion, in particular proving that if $A\subset\{1,\ldots,N\}$ has no non-trivial three-term arithmetic progressions then \[\lvert A\rvert \leq \exp(-c(\log N)^{1/9})N\] for some $c>0$.

The Kelley--Meka bounds for sets free of three-term arithmetic progressions
Published in Ess. Number Th. 2 (2023) 15-44 • View PublicationBIB
We give a self-contained exposition of the recent remarkable result of Kelley and Meka: if $A\subseteq \{1,\ldots,N\}$ has no non-trivial three-term arithmetic progressions then $\lvert A\rvert \leq \exp(-c(\log N)^{1/12})N$ for some constant $c>0$. Although our proof is identical to that of Kelley and Meka in all of the main ideas, we also incorporate some minor simplifications relating to Bohr sets. This eases some of the technical difficulties tackled by Kelley and Meka and widens the scope of their method. As a consequence, we improve the lower bounds for finding long arithmetic progressions in $A+A+A$, where $A\subseteq \{1,\ldots,N\}$.

Breaking the logarithmic barrier in Roth's theorem on arithmetic progressions
We show that if $A\subset \{1,\ldots,N\}$ contains no non-trivial three-term arithmetic progressions then $\lvert A\rvert \ll N/(\log N)^{1+c}$ for some absolute constant $c>0$. In particular, this proves the first non-trivial case of a conjecture of Erdős on arithmetic progressions.

Logarithmic bounds for Roth's theorem via almost-periodicity
Published in Discrete Analysis, 2019:4, 20 pp • View PublicationBIB
We give a new proof of logarithmic bounds for Roth's theorem on arithmetic progressions, namely that if $A \subset \{1,2,\ldots,N\}$ is free of three-term progressions, then $\lvert A\rvert \leq N/(\log N)^{1-o(1)}$. Unlike previous proofs, this is almost entirely done in physical space using almost-periodicity.

Convolutions of sets with bounded VC-dimension are uniformly continuous
Published in Discrete Analysis, 2021:1, 25 pp • View PublicationBIB
We study a notion of VC-dimension for subsets of groups, defining this for a set $A$ to be the VC-dimension of the family $\{ (xA) \cap A : x \in A\cdot A^{-1} \}$. We show that if a finite subset $A$ of an abelian group has bounded VC-dimension, then the convolution $1_A*1_{-A}$ is Bohr uniformly continuous, in a quantitatively strong sense. This generalises and strengthens a version of the stable arithmetic regularity lemma of Terry and Wolf in various ways. In particular, it directly implies that the Polynomial Bogolyubov--Ruzsa Conjecture -- a strong version of the Polynomial Freiman--Ruzsa Conjecture -- holds for sets with bounded VC-dimension. We also prove some results in the non-abelian setting. In some sense, this gives a structure theorem for translation-closed set systems with bounded (classical) VC-dimension: if a VC-bounded family of subsets of an abelian group is closed under translation, then each member has a simple description in terms of Bohr sets, up to a small error.

Roth's theorem for four variables and additive structures in sums of sparse sets
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that if a subset A of {1,...,N} does not contain any solutions to the equation x+y+z=3w with the variables not all equal, then A has size at most exp(-c(log N)^{1/7}) N, where c > 0 is some absolute constant. In view of Behrend's construction, this bound is of the right shape: the exponent 1/7 cannot be replaced by any constant larger than 1/2. We also establish a related result, which says that sumsets A+A+A contain long arithmetic progressions if A is a subset of {1,...,N}, or high-dimensional subspaces if A is a subset of a vector space over a finite field, even if A has density of the shape above.

Convergence results for systems of linear forms on cyclic groups, and periodic nilsequences
Published in SIAM J. Discrete Math. 28 (2014), no. 2, 786-810 • View PublicationBIB
Given a positive integer $N$ and real number $α\in [0, 1]$, let $m(α,N)$ denote the minimum, over all sets $A\subset \mathbb{Z}/N\mathbb{Z}$ of size at least $αN$, of the normalized count of 3-term arithmetic progressions contained in $A$. A theorem of Croot states that $m(α,N)$ converges as $N\to\infty$ through the primes, answering a question of Green. Using recent advances in higher-order Fourier analysis, we prove an extension of this theorem, showing that the result holds for $k$-term progressions for general $k$ and further for all systems of integer linear forms of finite complexity. We also obtain a similar convergence result for the maximum densities of sets free of solutions to systems of linear equations. These results rely on a regularity method for functions on finite cyclic groups that we frame in terms of periodic nilsequences, using in particular some regularity results of Szegedy (relying on his joint work with Camarena) and equidistribution results of Green and Tao.

On the asymptotic maximal density of a set avoiding solutions to linear equations modulo a prime
Published in Acta Math. Hungar. 132 (3) (2011), 223--243 • View PublicationBIB
Given a finite family F of linear forms with integer coefficients, and a compact abelian group G, an F-free set in G is a measurable set which does not contain solutions to any equation L(x)=0 for L in F. We denote by d_F(G) the supremum of m(A) over F-free sets A in G, where m is the normalized Haar measure on G. Our main result is that, for any such collection F of forms in at least three variables, the sequence d_F(Z_p) converges to d_F(R/Z) as p tends to infinity over primes. This answers an analogue for Z_p of a question that Ruzsa raised about sets of integers.

Arithmetic progressions in sumsets and L^p-almost-periodicity
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove results about the L^p-almost-periodicity of convolutions. One of these follows from a simple but rather general lemma about approximating a sum of functions in L^p, and gives a very short proof of a theorem of Green that if A and B are subsets of {1,...,N} of sizes alpha N and beta N then A+B contains an arithmetic progression of length at least about exp(c (alpha beta log N)^{1/2}). Another almost-periodicity result improves this bound for densities decreasing with N: we show that under the above hypotheses the sumset A+B contains an arithmetic progression of length at least about exp(c (alpha log N/(log(beta^{-1}))^3)^{1/2}).

A probabilistic technique for finding almost-periods of convolutions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a new probabilistic technique for finding 'almost-periods' of convolutions of subsets of groups. This gives results similar to the Bogolyubov-type estimates established by Fourier analysis on abelian groups but without the need for a nice Fourier transform to exist. We also present applications, some of which are new even in the abelian setting. These include a probabilistic proof of Roth's theorem on three-term arithmetic progressions and a proof of a variant of the Bourgain-Green theorem on the existence of long arithmetic progressions in sumsets A+B that works with sparser subsets of {1, ..., N} than previously possible. In the non-abelian setting we exhibit analogues of the Bogolyubov-Freiman-Halberstam-Ruzsa-type results of additive combinatorics, showing that product sets A B C and A^2 A^{-2} are rather structured, in the sense that they contain very large iterated product sets. This is particularly so when the sets in question satisfy small-doubling conditions or high multiplicative energy conditions. We also present results on structures in product sets A B. Our results are 'local' in nature, meaning that it is not necessary for the sets under consideration to be dense in the ambient group. In particular, our results apply to finite subsets of infinite groups provided they 'interact nicely' with some other set.

A new proof of Roth's theorem on arithmetic progressions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We present a proof of Roth's theorem that follows a slightly different structure to the usual proofs, in that there is not much iteration. Although our proof works using a type of density increment argument (which is typical of most proofs of Roth's theorem), we do not pass to a progression related to the large Fourier coefficients of our set (as most other proofs of Roth do). Furthermore, in our proof, the density increment is achieved through an application of a quantitative version of Varnavides's theorem, which is perhaps unexpected.

On the maximal number of three-term arithmetic progressions in subsets of Z/pZ
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let a be a real number between 0 and 1. Ernie Croot showed that the quantity \max_A #(3-term arithmetic progressions in A)/p^2, where A ranges over all subsets of Z/pZ of size at most a*p, tends to a limit as p tends to infinity through primes. Writing c(a) for this limit, we show that c(a) = a^2/2 provided that a is smaller than some absolute constant. In fact we prove rather more, establishing a structure theorem for sets having the maximal number of 3-term progressions amongst all subsets of Z/pZ of cardinality m, provided that m < c*p.
