On Euler's magic matrices of sizes $3$ and $8$
A proper Euler's magic matrix is an integer $n\times n$ matrix $M\in\mathbb Z^{n\times n}$ such that $M\cdot M^t=γ\cdot I$ for some nonzero constant $γ$, the sum of the squares of the entries along each of the two main diagonals equals $γ$, and the squares of all entries in $M$ are pairwise distinct. Euler constructed such matrices for $n=4$. In this work, we construct examples for $n=8$ and prove that no such matrix exists for $n=3$.

Another Proof of Segre's Theorem about Ovals
In 1955 B. Segre showed that any oval in a projective plane over a finite field of odd order is a conic. His proof constructs a conic which matches the oval in some points and tangents, and then shows that it actually coincides with the oval. The different proof given here parametrizes an affine piece of the oval and shows directly that the parametrization is given by a polynomial of degree $2$.

On the size of Kakeya sets in finite vector spaces
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a finite field GF(q) a Kakeya set K is a subset of GF(q)^n that contains a line in every direction. This paper derives new upper bounds on the minimum size of Kakeya sets when q is even.

Galois groups of multivariate Tutte polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
The multivariate Tutte polynomial $\hat Z_M$ of a matroid $M$ is a generalization of the standard two-variable version, obtained by assigning a separate variable $v_e$ to each element $e$ of the ground set $E$. It encodes the full structure of $M$. Let $\bv = \{v_e\}_{e\in E}$, let $K$ be an arbitrary field, and suppose $M$ is connected. We show that $\hat Z_M$ is irreducible over $K(\bv)$, and give three self-contained proofs that the Galois group of $\hat Z_M$ over $K(\bv)$ is the symmetric group of degree $n$, where $n$ is the rank of $M$. An immediate consequence of this result is that the Galois group of the multivariate Tutte polynomial of any matroid is a direct product of symmetric groups. Finally, we conjecture a similar result for the standard Tutte polynomial of a connected matroid.

On the non-existence of sharply transitive sets of permutations in certain finite permutation groups

In this short note we present a simple combinatorial trick which can be effectively applied to show the non--existence of sharply transitive sets of permutations in certain finite permutation groups.
