Non-r-partite graphs without complete split subgraphs
The classical Simonovits' chromatic critical edge theorem shows that for sufficiently large $n$, if $H$ is an edge-color-critical graph with $χ(H)=p+1\ge 3$, then the Turán graph $T_{n,p}$ is the unique extremal graph with respect to ${\rm ex}(n,H)$. Denote by ${\rm EX}_{r+1}(n,H)$ and ${\rm SPEX}_{r+1}(n,H)$ the family of $n$-vertex $H$-free non-$r$-partite graphs with the maximum size and with the spectral radius, respectively. Li and Peng [SIAM J. Discrete Math. 37 (2023) 2462--2485] characterized the unique graph in $\mathrm{SPEX}_{r+1}(n,K_{r+1})$ for $r\geq 2$ and showed that $\mathrm{SPEX}_{r+1}(n,K_{r+1})\subseteq \mathrm{EX}_{r+1}(n,K_{r+1})$. It is interesting to study the extremal or spectral extremal problems for color-critical graph $H$ in non-$r$-partite graphs. For $p\geq 2$ and $q\geq 1$, we call the graph $B_{p,q}:=K_p\nabla qK_1$ a complete split graph (or generalized book graph). In this note, we determine the unique spectral extremal graph in $\mathrm{SPEX}_{r+1}(n,B_{p,q})$ and show that $\mathrm{SPEX}_{r+1}(n,B_{p,q})\subseteq \mathrm{EX}_{r+1}(n,B_{p,q})$ for sufficiently large $n$.
Extremal Problems in Royal Colorings of Graphs

An edge coloring $c$ of a graph $G$ is a royal $k$-edge coloring of $G$ if the edges of $G$ are assigned nonempty subsets of the set $\{1, 2, \ldots, k\}$ in such a way that the vertex coloring obtained by assigning the union of the colors of the incident edges of each vertex is a proper vertex coloring. If the vertex coloring is vertex-distinguishing, then $c$ is a strong royal $k$-edge coloring. The minimum positive integer $k$ for which $G$ has a strong royal $k$-edge coloring is the strong royal index of $G$. It has been conjectured that if $G$ is a connected graph of order $n\ge 4$ where $2^{k-1} \le n \le 2^k-1$ for a positive integer $k$, then the strong royal index of $G$ is either $k$ or $k+1$. We discuss this conjecture along with other information concerning strong royal colorings of graphs. A sufficient condition for such a graph to have a strong royal index $k+1$ is presented.

A conjecture of Gyárfás and Sárközy says that in every $2$-coloring of the edges of the complete $k$-uniform hypergraph $K_n^k$, there are two disjoint monochromatic loose paths of distinct colors such that they cover all but at most $k-2$ vertices. A weaker form of this conjecture with $2k-5$ uncovered vertices instead of $k-2$ is proved, thus the conjecture holds for $k=3$. The main result of this paper states that the conjecture is true for all $k\ge 3$.
Arithmetic properties of generalized Euler numbers

The generalized Euler number E_{n|k} counts the number of permutations of {1,2,...,n} which have a descent in position m if and only if m is divisible by k. The classical Euler numbers are the special case when k=2. In this paper, we study divisibility properties of a q-analog of E_{n|k}. In particular, we generalize two theorems of Andrews and Gessel about factors of the q-tangent numbers.
The Wiener polynomial of a graph

The Wiener index is a graphical invariant that has found extensive application in chemistry. We define a generating function, which we call the Wiener polynomial, whose derivative is a q-analog of the Wiener index. We study some of the elementary properties of this polynomial and compute it for some common graphs. We then find a formula for the Wiener polynomial of a dendrimer, a certain highly regular tree of interest to chemists, and show that it is unimodal. Finally, we point out a connection with the Poincare polynomial of a finite Coxeter group.
