Exponential Growth Constants for Spanning Forests on Archimedean Lattices: Values and Comparisons of Upper Bounds
Published in IJMPB (Internat. J. Mod. Phys. B) 35, 2150085 (2021) • View PublicationBIB
We compare our upper bounds on the exponential growth constant $φ(Λ)$ characterizing the asymptotic behavior of spanning forests on Archimedean lattices $Λ$ with recently derived upper bounds. Our upper bounds on $φ(Λ)$, which are very close to the respective values of $φ(Λ)$ that we have calculated, are shown to be significantly better for these lattices than the new upper bounds.

Asymptotic Behavior of Spanning Forests and Connected Spanning Subgraphs on Two-Dimensional Lattices
Published in Int. J. Mod. Phys. B 34, 2050249 (2020) • View PublicationBIB
We calculate exponential growth constants $φ$ and $σ$ describing the asymptotic behavior of spanning forests and connected spanning subgraphs on strip graphs, with arbitrarily great length, of several two-dimensional lattices, including square, triangular, honeycomb, and certain heteropolygonal Archimedean lattices. By studying the limiting values as the strip widths get large, we infer lower and upper bounds on these exponential growth constants for the respective infinite lattices. Since our lower and upper bounds are quite close to each other, we can infer very accurate approximate values for these exponential growth constants, with fractional uncertainties ranging from $O(10^{-4})$ to $O(10^{-2})$. We show that $φ$ and $σ$, are monotonically increasing functions of vertex degree for these lattices.
$q$-Plane Zeros of the Potts Partition Function on Diamond Hierarchical Graphs
Published in J. Math. Phys. 61, 073301 (2020) • View PublicationBIB
We report exact results concerning the zeros of the partition function of the Potts model in the complex $q$ plane, as a function of a temperature-like Boltzmann variable $v$, for the $m$'th iterate graphs $D_m$ of the Diamond Hierarchical Lattice (DHL), including the limit $m \to \infty$. In this limit we denote the continuous accumulation locus of zeros in the $q$ planes at fixed $v = v_0$ as ${\mathcal B}_q(v_0)$. We apply theorems from complex dynamics to establish properties of ${\mathcal B}_q(v_0)$. For $v=-1$ (the zero-temperature Potts antiferromagnet, or equivalently, chromatic polynomial), we prove that ${\mathcal B}_q(-1)$ crosses the real-$q$ axis at (i) a minimal point $q=0$, (ii) a maximal point $q=3$ (iii) $q=32/27$, (iv) a cubic root that we give, with the value $q = q_1 = 1.6388969..$, and (v) an infinite number of points smaller than $q_1$, converging to $32/27$ from above. Similar results hold for ${\mathcal B}_q(v_0)$ for any $-1 < v < 0$ (Potts antiferromagnet at nonzero temperature). The locus ${\mathcal B}_q(v_0)$ crosses the real-$q$ axis at only two points for any $v > 0$ (Potts ferromagnet). We also provide computer-generated plots of ${\mathcal B}_q(v_0)$ at various values of $v_0$ in both the antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic regimes and compare them to numerically computed zeros of $Z(D_4,q,v_0)$.

Chromatic Polynomials of Planar Triangulations, the Tutte Upper Bound, and Chromatic Zeros
Published in J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 45, 055212 (2012) • View PublicationBIB
Tutte proved that if $G_{pt}$ is a planar triangulation and $P(G_{pt},q)$ is its chromatic polynomial, then $|P(G_{pt},τ+1)| \le (τ-1)^{n-5}$, where $τ=(1+\sqrt{5} \,)/2$ and $n$ is the number of vertices in $G_{pt}$. Here we study the ratio $r(G_{pt})=|P(G_{pt},τ+1)|/(τ-1)^{n-5}$ for a variety of planar triangulations. We construct infinite recursive families of planar triangulations $G_{pt,m}$ depending on a parameter $m$ linearly related to $n$ and show that if $P(G_{pt,m},q)$ only involves a single power of a polynomial, then $r(G_{pt,m})$ approaches zero exponentially fast as $n \to \infty$. We also construct infinite recursive families for which $P(G_{pt,m},q)$ is a sum of powers of certain functions and show that for these, $r(G_{pt,m})$ may approach a finite nonzero constant as $n \to \infty$. The connection between the Tutte upper bound and the observed chromatic zero(s) near to $τ+1$ is investigated. We report the first known graph for which the zero(s) closest to $τ+1$ is not real, but instead is a complex-conjugate pair. Finally, we discuss connections with nonzero ground-state entropy of the Potts antiferromagnet on these families of graphs.

Weighted Graph Colorings
Published in J. Stat. Phys. 138, 496-542 (2010) • View PublicationBIB
We study two weighted graph coloring problems, in which one assigns $q$ colors to the vertices of a graph such that adjacent vertices have different colors, with a vertex weighting $w$ that either disfavors or favors a given color. We exhibit a weighted chromatic polynomial $Ph(G,q,w)$ associated with this problem that generalizes the chromatic polynomial $P(G,q)$. General properties of this polynomial are proved, and illustrative calculations for various families of graphs are presented. We show that the weighted chromatic polynomial is able to distinguish between certain graphs that yield the same chromatic polynomial. We give a general structural formula for $Ph(G,q,w)$ for lattice strip graphs $G$ with periodic longitudinal boundary conditions. The zeros of $Ph(G,q,w)$ in the $q$ and $w$ planes and their accumulation sets in the limit of infinitely many vertices of $G$ are analyzed. Finally, some related weighted graph coloring problems are mentioned.

Some Exact Results on the Potts Model Partition Function in a Magnetic Field
Published in J. Phys. A 42, 385004 (2009) • View PublicationBIB
We consider the Potts model in a magnetic field on an arbitrary graph $G$. Using a formula of F. Y. Wu for the partition function $Z$ of this model as a sum over spanning subgraphs of $G$, we prove some properties of $Z$ concerning factorization, monotonicity, and zeros. A generalization of the Tutte polynomial is presented that corresponds to this partition function. In this context we formulate and discuss two weighted graph-coloring problems. We also give a general structural result for $Z$ for cyclic strip graphs.

Some Exact Results for Spanning Trees on Lattices
Published in J. Phys. A: Math. Gen. 39, 5653-5658 (2006) • View PublicationBIB
For $n$-vertex, $d$-dimensional lattices $Λ$ with $d \ge 2$, the number of spanning trees $N_{ST}(Λ)$ grows asymptotically as $\exp(n z_Λ)$ in the thermodynamic limit. We present an exact closed-form result for the asymptotic growth constant $z_{bcc(d)}$ for spanning trees on the $d$-dimensional body-centered cubic lattice. We also give an exact integral expression for $z_{fcc}$ on the face-centered cubic lattice and an exact closed-form expression for $z_{488}$ on the $4 \cdot 8 \cdot 8$ lattice.

Structural Properties of Potts Model Partition Functions and Chromatic Polynomials for Lattice Strips
Published in Physica A 296, 131-182 (2001) • View PublicationBIB
partial abstract: The $q$-state Potts model partition function (equivalent to the Tutte polynomial) for a lattice strip of fixed width $L_y$ and arbitrary length $L_x$ has the form $Z(G,q,v)=\sum_{j=1}^{N_{Z,G,λ}}c_{Z,G,j}(λ_{Z,G,j})^{L_x}$, where $v$ is a temperature-dependent variable. The special case of the zero-temperature antiferromagnet ($v=-1$) is the chromatic polynomial $P(G,q)$. Using coloring and transfer matrix methods, we give general formulas for $C_{X,G}=\sum_{j=1}^{N_{X,G,λ}}c_{X,G,j}$ for $X=Z,P$ on cyclic and Möbius strip graphs of the square and triangular lattice. Combining these with a general expression for the (unique) coefficient $c_{Z,G,j}$ of degree $d$ in $q$: $c^{(d)}=U_{2d}(\frac{\sqrt{q}}{2})$, where $U_n(x)$ is the Chebyshev polynomial of the second kind, we determine the number of $λ_{Z,G,j}$'s with coefficient $c^{(d)}$ in $Z(G,q,v)$ for these cyclic strips of width $L_y$ to be $n_Z(L_y,d)=(2d+1)(L_y+d+1)^{-1} {2L_y \choose L_y-d}$ for $0 \le d \le L_y$ and zero otherwise. For both cyclic and Möbius strips of these lattices, the total number of distinct eigenvalues $λ_{Z,G,j}$ is calculated to be $N_{Z,L_y,λ}={2L_y \choose L_y}$. We point out that $N_{Z,L_y,λ}=2N_{DA,tri,L_y}$ and $N_{P,L_y,λ}=2N_{DA,sq,L_y}$, where $N_{DA,Λ,n}$ denotes the number of directed lattice animals on the lattice $Λ$.

Ground State Entropy of the Potts Antiferromagnet with Next-Nearest-Neighbor Spin-Spin Couplings on Strips of the Square Lattice
Published in Phys. Rev. E62, 4650-4664 (2000) • View PublicationBIB
We present exact calculations of the zero-temperature partition function (chromatic polynomial) and $W(q)$, the exponent of the ground-state entropy, for the $q$-state Potts antiferromagnet with next-nearest-neighbor spin-spin couplings on square lattice strips, of width $L_y=3$ and $L_y=4$ vertices and arbitrarily great length $L_x$ vertices, with both free and periodic boundary conditions. The resultant values of $W$ for a range of physical $q$ values are compared with each other and with the values for the full 2D lattice. These results give insight into the effect of such non-nearest neighbor couplings on the ground state entropy. We show that the $q=2$ (Ising) and $q=4$ Potts antiferromagnets have zero-temperature critical points on the $L_x \to \infty$ limits of the strips that we study. With the generalization of $q$ from ${\mathbb Z}_+$ to ${\mathbb C}$, we determine the analytic structure of $W(q)$ in the $q$ plane for the various cases.

T=0 Partition Functions for Potts Antiferromagnets on Square Lattice Strips with (Twisted) Periodic Boundary Conditions
Published in J. Phys A (Letts.) 32, L489-L493 (1999) • View PublicationBIB
We present exact calculations of the zero-temperature partition function for the q-state Potts antiferromagnet (equivalently, the chromatic polynomial) for two families of arbitrarily long strip graphs of the square lattice with periodic boundary conditions in the transverse direction and (i) periodic (ii) twisted periodic boundary conditions in the longitudinal direction, so that the strip graphs are embedded on a (i) torus (ii) Klein bottle. In the limit of infinite length, we calculate the exponent of the entropy, W(q), show it to be the same for (i) and (ii), and determine its analytic structure.

Ground-State Degeneracy of Potts Antiferromagnets on Two-Dimensional Lattices: Approach Using Infinite Cyclic Strip Graphs
Published in Phys. Rev. E60, 3512-3515 (1999) • View PublicationBIB
The q-state Potts antiferromagnet on a lattice $Λ$ exhibits nonzero ground state entropy $S_0=k_B \ln W$ for sufficiently large q and hence is an exception to the third law of thermodynamics. An outstanding challenge has been the calculation of W(sq,q) on the square (sq) lattice. We present here an exact calculation of W on an infinite-length cyclic strip of the square lattice which embodies the expected analytic properties of W(sq,q). Similar results are given for the kagomé lattice.

We present exact calculations of the zero-temperature partition function of the $q$-state Potts antiferromagnet (equivalently the chromatic polynomial) for Moebius strips, with width $L_y=2$ or 3, of regular lattices and homeomorphic expansions thereof. These are compared with the corresponding partition functions for strip graphs with (untwisted) periodic longitudinal boundary conditions.

Ground State Entropy of the Potts Antiferromagnet on Cyclic Strip Graphs
Published in J. Phys. A (Lett.) 32, L195 (1999) • View PublicationBIB
We present exact calculations of the zero-temperature partition function (chromatic polynomial) and the (exponent of the) ground-state entropy $S_0$ for the $q$-state Potts antiferromagnet on families of cyclic and twisted cyclic (Möbius) strip graphs composed of $p$-sided polygons. Our results suggest a general rule concerning the maximal region in the complex $q$ plane to which one can analytically continue from the physical interval where $S_0 > 0$. The chromatic zeros and their accumulation set ${\cal B}$ exhibit the rather unusual property of including support for $Re(q) < 0$ and provide further evidence for a relevant conjecture.

Ground State Entropy of Potts Antiferromagnets: Homeomorphic Classes with Noncompact W Boundaries
Published in Physica A265, 186 (1999) • View PublicationBIB
We present exact calculations of the zero-temperature partition function $Z(G,q,T=0)$ and ground-state degeneracy $W(\{G\},q)$ for the $q$-state Potts antiferromagnet on a number of families of graphs $G$ for which (generalizing $q$ from ${\mathbb Z}_+$ to ${\mathbb C}$) the boundary ${\cal B}$ of regions of analyticity of $W$ in the complex $q$ plane is noncompact, passing through $z=1/q=0$. For these types of graphs, since the reduced function $W_{red.}=q^{-1}W$ is nonanalytic at $z=0$, there is no large--$q$ Taylor series expansion of $W_{red.}$. The study of these graphs thus gives insight into the conditions for the validity of the large--$q$ expansions. It is shown how such (families of) graphs can be generated from known families by homeomorphic expansion.

Ground State Entropy of Potts Antiferromagnets: Cases with Noncompact W Boundaries Having Multiple Points at 1/q = 0
Published in J. Phys. A 31, 9641 (1998) • View PublicationBIB
We present exact calculations of the zero-temperature partition function, $Z(G,q,T=0)$, and ground-state degeneracy (per site), $W({G},q)$, for the $q$-state Potts antiferromagnet on a number of families of graphs ${G}$ for which the boundary ${\cal B}$ of regions of analyticity of $W$ in the complex $q$ plane is noncompact and has the properties that (i) in the $z=1/q$ plane, the point $z=0$ is a multiple point on ${\cal B}$ and (ii) ${\cal B}$ includes support for $Re(q) < 0$. These families are generated by the method of homeomorphic expansion. Our results give further insight into the conditions for the validity of large--$q$ series expansions for the reduced function $W_{red.}=q^{-1}W$.

Ground State Entropy of Potts Antiferromagnets on Homeomorphic Families of Strip Graphs
Published in Physica A259, 315 (1998) • View PublicationBIB
We present exact calculations of the zero-temperature partition function, and ground-state degeneracy (per site), $W$, for the $q$-state Potts antiferromagnet on a variety of homeomorphic families of planar strip graphs $G = (Ch)_{k_1,k_2,Σ,k,m}$, where $k_1$, $k_2$, $Σ$, and $k$ describe the homeomorphic structure, and $m$ denotes the length of the strip. Several different ways of taking the total number of vertices to infinity, by sending (i) $m \to \infty$ with $k_1$, $k_2$, and $k$ fixed; (ii) $k_1$ and/or $k_2 \to \infty$ with $m$, and $k$ fixed; and (iii) $k \to \infty$ with $m$ and $p=k_1+k_2$ fixed are studied and the respective loci of points ${\cal B}$ where $W$ is nonanalytic in the complex $q$ plane are determined. The ${\cal B}$'s for limit (i) are comprised of arcs which do not enclose regions in the $q$ plane and, for many values of $p$ and $k$, include support for $Re(q) < 0$. The ${\cal B}$ for limits (ii) and (iii) is the unit circle $|q-1|=1$.

Chromatic Polynomials for Families of Strip Graphs and their Asymptotic Limits
Published in Physica A 252, 505 (1998) • View PublicationBIB
We calculate the chromatic polynomials $P((G_s)_m,q)$ and, from these, the asymptotic limiting functions $W(\{G_s\},q)=\lim_{n \to \infty}P(G_s,q)^{1/n}$ for families of $n$-vertex graphs $(G_s)_m$ comprised of $m$ repeated subgraphs $H$ adjoined to an initial graph $I$. These calculations of $W(\{G_s\},q)$ for infinitely long strips of varying widths yield important insights into properties of $W(Λ,q)$ for two-dimensional lattices $Λ$. In turn, these results connect with statistical mechanics, since $W(Λ,q)$ is the ground state degeneracy of the $q$-state Potts model on the lattice $Λ$. For our calculations, we develop and use a generating function method, which enables us to determine both the chromatic polynomials of finite strip graphs and the resultant $W(\{G_s\},q)$ function in the limit $n \to \infty$. From this, we obtain the exact continuous locus of points ${\cal B}$ where $W(\{G_s\},q)$ is nonanalytic in the complex $q$ plane. This locus is shown to consist of arcs which do not separate the $q$ plane into disconnected regions. Zeros of chromatic polynomials are computed for finite strips and compared with the exact locus of singularities ${\cal B}$. We find that as the width of the infinitely long strips is increased, the arcs comprising ${\cal B}$ elongate and move toward each other, which enables one to understand the origin of closed regions that result for the (infinite) 2D lattice.
